Prime Minister Christopher Luxon arrived in Malaysia this morning, along with other world leaders, for the start of the East Asia Summit. US President Donald Trump will also be in attendance meaning a potential face-to-face meeting with Luxon. Geopolitical analyst Geoffrey Miller told Andrew Dickens, "They do need to keep their heads down a little bit because they can't risk antagonising Donald Trump." Send us a textGUEST: SOEREN KERN, Geopolitical Analyst and Managing Editor, The Christian Worldview JournalEarlier this month, President Trump and his administration brokered a ceasefire in the two-year-old war between Israel and Hamas that has taken place in Gaza, the small Palestinian territory in southwest Israel. After Hamas' savage attack into Israel two years ago where they killed 1200 and took 250 hostages back to Gaza, Israel has systematically targeted entrenched Hamas fighters in Gaza, resulting in a near takeover and destruction of Gaza.So what makes this ceasefire significant? It's what it doesn't do and what it could lead to. While greatly diminished, Hamas lives on in Gaza, certain to rebuild, just as Iran is doing after President Trump called Israel off that war. In other words, while Israel has flexed powerful muscles across the Middle East, their enemies live on to fight another day. Meanwhile, President Trump is eager to have the Abraham Accords signed by Israel and longtime Arab enemies throughout he Middle East. Plus, there is a strong international push for a Palestinian state in Israel.Soeren Kern, geopolitical analyst and managing editor of The Christian Worldview Journal, joins us to discuss the ceasefire and how it may be setting the stage for God's miraculous rescue in the future.

While it looks to be a solid plan at first glance, there's at least one major flaw in Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for Gaza. If agreed to by Hamas, the war would end immediately, with Israeli troops withdrawing and Hamas releasing all hostages. No one will be forced to leave Gaza, and Israel won't occupy or annex the territory. The US President would lead a new transitional government, made up of Palestinians and experts like former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. But International Geopolitical Analyst Geoffrey Miller told Kerre Woodham that along with the fact that only Israel has been involved in the negotiation of this deal, there is no timeline outlined. He says the deal mentions providing a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood, but there's no timeline as to how it would be achieved, so it makes you wonder if it's been added in to make it sound good. An international relations expert is deeming New Zealand's decision on Palestinian statehood as 'surprising'. Winston Peters confirmed at the UN General Assembly that we won't recognise a Palestinian state right now - as the conditions aren't right. Geopolitical analyst Geoffrey Miller says this decision is out of synch with our international allies, including Australia, the UK and Canada. "And these are states with which New Zealand is quite close with, when it comes to positions on the war in Gaza since October 7th. New Zealand has signed a number of joint statements with Australia and Canada, for example...it's worked very closely with those three." A global affairs expert says there was a clear difference in the guest list at China's military parade today, compared with previous years. Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin joined Chinese President Xi Jinping for the World War Two commemorations. Former Prime Ministers Sir John Key and Helen Clark were also there. Geopolitical analyst Geoffrey Miller says previous parades had lots of western leaders. He explained the global south was over-represented, with leaders from Africa, Asia and former soviet republics. The opening of a standalone FBI office may be putting New Zealand in a bit of an awkward position. The bureau's establishing a permanent presence in Wellington, focusing on trans-national crime like terrorism money laundering, child exploitation, and foreign intelligence threats. FBI Director Kash Patel has also said it would counter China's influence in the Pacific. Geopolitical Analyst Geoffrey Miller told Mike Hosking Patel's statement has ruffled feathers at the Chinese Embassy in Wellington, who put out a statement condemning “groundless assertions and vilification of China”. The power structure in the Middle East has changed in a very short time, with Iran and its proxies weakened and Israel empowered.Soeren Kern, geopolitical analyst and managing editor of The Christian Worldview Journal joins us today to give perspective on these momentous events and how they may relate to God's end times plan.
The sun's rising in the Middle East - on an uncertain kind of ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Iran State Television has claimed a ceasefire now applies - although Israel's made no official comment yet. Earlier today, US President Donald Trump announced hostilities would pause between Israel and Iran, saying they want peace. Geopolitical analyst Geoffrey Miller says a very strange, staggered ceasefire reportedly applies. "There's now, according to Donald Trump, you've got a 12-hour window until 4am NZT tomorrow in which Israel will be allowed to strike Iran - but Iran will not be able to strike back." Iran retaliated overnight to US strikes on its nuclear sites - with its attacks intercepted. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Little has come from another round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. The two countries have agreed to exchange prisoners of war, including the sick and wounded, and those under 25. Ukraine has also launched large scale drone attacks on Russian air bases, damaging a third of its cruise missile carriers. Geopolitical analyst Geoffrey Miller told Mike Hosking this likely won't go down well with US President Donald Trump. He says he may see it as trying to scupper peace talks, as Trump's very much been championing the idea of talking and working out a diplomatic solution. Last week Foreign Minister Winston Peters made a trip over to the US to meet with the new Trump administration. On the trip, Peters carried out a number of meetings with officials such as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Peters has since revealed very little about what was discussed or achieved in these meetings, instead simply stating he was ‘very pleased' and ‘more confident going out than coming in.' The main questions ahead of the trip were around what effect Trump's tariffs may have on Aotearoa, as well as what trade with the US will look like moving forward. However little has been revealed following the trip. Producer Evie spoke to Geopolitical Analyst at the University of Otago Geoffrey Miller about the trip and what Aotearoa can expect to come out of it.

Winston Peters has made it clear to China that we aren't happy with its handling of the warships the Tasman Sea. The Foreign Minister's been meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing. Peters says the pair talked about China's new deal with the Cook Islands and the Chinese Navy vessels, which have now entered Australia's exclusive economic zone. Geopolitical analyst Geoffrey Miller told Mike Hosking Peters doesn't appear to have held back. He says it appears to have been a fairly tough conversation, and a robust exchange of views, with Peters saying it was a "failure" that China didn't give more notice to New Zealand. Miller says China probably didn't want things to play out as they have, and reports from Chinese state media suggest it's keen for more "dialogue" in the future. Last week Donald Trump won the US election, securing his second term as President, and is now set to take office in January of next year. This now leaves many questions of what his second term as president will look like. In contrast to his 2016 presidency, there's now an ongoing war in Gaza, in which the US has had much influence. Many have been dissatisfied with the response to this by the Biden/Harris administration, and now wait to see what action Trump will take on the issue. There are also questions on what stance Trump will take on the ongoing war in Ukraine, in which the US has largely supported Ukraine. However Trump undoubtedly has his own relationship with Russia. Producer Evie spoke to Geopolitical analyst at the University of Otago, Geoffrey Miller about these questions, and what we can expect to see under Trump's administration this time around.

Winston Peters' has been praised for starting his speech at the UN by condemning Hamas. The Foreign Affairs Minister used his speech at the General Assembly to reiterate New Zealand's call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as well as a two-state solution. He expressed grave concerns for any Israeli military offensive but also called for Hamas to release the remaining hostages. Geopolitical analyst Geoffrey Miller told Mike Hosking that around 134 hostages are still unaccounted for in Gaza. He says Israel estimates around 100 are probably alive and it's important to remember this is how this crisis all started. However, Peters may have lost an opportunity. He also called out the UN Security Council for failing to act decisively due to some members' repeated use of the veto. But Miller said that he wasn't willing to talk firmly about the US repeated vetoes. He says we're trying to align our foreign policy with the US in other ways, but the US has huge leverage over Israel through its weapon supplies.
