People write books for all kinds of reasons. Some write to teach what they know, some write to tell made-up stories, some write to promote their business, and some write because they're passionate about a particular topic… just to name a few reasons. On this episode, I'm excited to feature a conversation with a friend of mine who's written a book to tell her story of surviving cancer. Her name is Helen Bullen, and we're talking about her fantastic new book, Agnes, Bea, Cancer and Me: Life with a Breast Cancer Diagnosis. A powerful, humorous, kindly blunt, inspirational and moving true story of strength and resilience. Helen is a kindly blunt cheerleader of all small business owners. She is also a retired Osteopath and former owner of a successful Multi-healthcare brick-and-mortar clinic. She runs The HBClub (group mentoring), HBInspired (VIP Mastermind), and HBBox (luxury stationery boxes) and holds HBretreats in both the UK and abroad. Helen also has online courses to help as many business owners as she can. Her previous work as a qualified lecturer led her to many senior teaching/examining roles both in the UK and Europe. Over the years, she has won multiple awards for both her clinic business and her business acumen. I've gotten to know Helen over the last couple of years as fellow members of Honorée Corder's Empire Builders Mastermind. I can attest that Helen is a fireball of energy, yet also a kind, empathetic, and brave human being. In our conversation, Helen and I talk about her memoir, why she structured it as a diary, her process of writing, how the book has changed her, and her tips for authors.

In an old Novena prayer book put out by the Sister Adorers of the Precious Blood, one can find this appeal that expresses the grief of His Majesty over the lack of cooperation found among men. It was carved by an unknown sculptor into the walls of an old European Cathedral: Thou callest Me Master, yet heedest not Me. Thou callest Me Light, yet I shine not in thee. Thou callest Me Way, but dost follow Me not. Thou callest Me Life, yet My Name is forgot. Thou callest Me Truth, but playest a false role. Thou callest Me GUIDE, yet despisest control. Thou callest Me LOVING, withholding thy heart. Thou callest Me RICH, yet desirest no part. Thou callest Me GOOD, and yet evil thy ways. Thou callest Me ETERNAL, while wasting thy days. Thou callest Me NOBLE, yet draggest Me down. Thou callest Me MIGHTY, not fearing My frown. Thou callest Me JUST, Oh! if just then I be, when I shall condemn thee, reproach thou not ME.

Over 40,000 chemicals currently find their way into a litany of consumer products. Although many are toxic, less than 1% have been tested for human safety. Nonetheless, great quantities can still be found in our drinking water. How is this possible? Shouldn’t clean water be a fundamental right? These questions are both fair and important. Unfortunately, trusted regulatory bodies like the EPA often fail to adequately protect us. Science is often manipulated by companies that put profit over public health. And thus, industry pollution continues unsupervised -- and the consumer protection laws we do have in place remain unenforced. To better understand this reality -- how we got here and where to go from here -- I sat down with one of the most famous names in environmental activism.Meet the the singular and eminent Erin Brockovich.Best known as the legal file clerk who battled PG&E over polluted water in the town of Hinckley, CA, Ms. Brockovich was instrumental in architecting a case that resulted in the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit in U.S. history. It’s a story that ended up on the big screen. Garnered Julia Roberts an Oscar for her portrayal of Erin under the direction of the great Steven Soderberg. And turned the name Erin Brockovich into not only a household name, but a verb.Unfortunately, America’s waters didn’t cease to be polluted after the closing credits of the film. In fact, they’ve only gotten worse -- a fact that should leave us all deeply concerned. And highly motivated to act.Because Superman's not coming.Today Erin delivers a master class on water, with one resounding takeaway: the problem is our's to solve.Simply put, we cannot rely on corporations or the government to protect us. An admittedly disheartening realization, it's also empowering -- a call to citizen activism to forge the better world we deserve. It's a theme Ms. Brockovich explores in her new book, Superman's Not Coming (and recently launched podcast of the same name), which both take a brutally honest look at how mismanagement, chemical spills, mishandling of toxic waste and sludge, and even fake studies have created the perfect storm in terms of damaging water systems in the United States. The result is making us sick. And destroying the environment along the way. This is a conversation about the outdated policies that perpetuate this pollution cycle, and the evil-overlord-level of deception that is happening in the corporations and government bodies we blindly trust. We discuss the regulatory landscape of clean water. How what most consider a human right has become politicized and weaponized. How to better educate yourself about your own water supply. And the actions to undertake in the event of an issue. In addition, we explore Erin’s upbringing. Her struggles with dyslexia. The experiences and mentors that fuel her perseverance. The case that brought her fame. And the vital work she has done since.Brimming with unexpected optimism, I think you will find Erin’s message a welcome break from the relentless apocalyptic doom presented by the 24-hour news cycle.A mighty, whip-smart and imposing force of nature, for many years I've deeply admired and respected Ms. Brockovich from afar. This conversation was an honor. And a powerful reminder of the indelible influence of the individual to create positive change and awaken a movement. Erin Brockovich is an environmental activist, consumer advocate, renowned crusader, and champion fighter whose courageous case against Pacific Gas and Electric was dramatized in an Oscar-winning film that earned Julia Roberts an Oscar in 2001. Julia's Brockovich may be frozen in time in the late 20th century, but Erin's Brockovich is fixated on the issues of today. She is older and wiser, yet wickedly funny and refreshing. Nonetheless, like her cinematic Ghost of Brockovich Past, she is still a force of nature and FOR nature. Erin is the president of Brockovich Research & Consulting and the founder of the Erin Brockovich Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to educate and empower communities in their fight for clean water. She is the co-author of "Take It from Me: Life's a Struggle but You Can Win" and she recently launched a podcast, "Superman's Not Coming," on PodcastOne. In Erin's long-awaited new book —"Superman's Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Do about it" — she makes clear why we are in trouble and warns us that if we're waiting for someone to save us, Superman isn't coming. Nor is the government or the environmental agencies. No one is going to solve this for us. It is up to us, we the people, and Erin shows us how. Actress Katey Sagal has accepted the challenge of bringing today's eternally turbo-charged Erin to life on television. The "The Sons of Anarchy" and "Married With Children" veteran—most recently seen on "The Conners"—is set to star in "Rebel," the Brockovich-inspired drama that has been picked up for a pilot commitment at ABC. Sagal will be joined by castmates Andy Garcia and John Corbett. This is Erin's third appearance on JONES.SHOW! Hey!My friend.... Hope you're doing well? Me? Life has been pretty rough lately. After overcoming the flu that lasted two weeks, I got severely injured during a pre-workout stretch. Yup, you read it correctly. A stretch that took me out of commission and I mean OUT of commission.  I've been suffering from a severe back pain that has kept me away from pretty much every physical activity imagined. It's been super rough, ya'll! Nonetheless, I remain optimistic and hopeful this will go away soon and I will get back into my groove once again. I apologize for not providing you with a new episode today but I had to cancel a few interviews:( Here's a short episode I recorded sharing all that has occurred. Thank you for joining and supporting me on this journey. Thank you. -O Resources mentioned in this episode Westchase Wellness Chiropractic Is Blogging Dead? (Houston Digital Media Society meetup)
