On this episode Derek, Nick, and Justin talk about the 2017 film Super Dark Times, written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. This film is an excellent window into the life of teenage boys growing up in the late 90's, with a dark twist that pushes an already crumbling friendship to the brink. Directed by Kevin Phillips, this film is an absolute masterpiece in tone, audio, and cinematography that all culminates into a dreamlike world of nostalgia. With a cast of all unknown (at the time) actors that absolutely smash it out of the park, we cannot recommend this one enough.

Welcome to Episode 70 of Glory Days of Gold, the East Fife and Scottish football podcast recorded across two continents. It's bleak down Bayview way after back to back home games saw East Fife take just one point, remain goalless in 2022, and cut eight points adrift at the bottom of Scottish League One, sailing into the oblivion that is the bottom tier. Where did all the good times go? You might have to cast your mind back a fair bit for those. But it's not all doom and gloom! The fab four are reunited once again to pick over the bones of those Falkirk and Peterhead games, ponder if we'll ever score again, look at whether we should just throw the young boys in now, and wonder where are the new faces to help us. Can some pride be restored before the end of the season? Come for the football chat, stay for the talk about mint yoyos.

According to Russel Simmions, In his book "Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money + God" The inspiration for Def COmedey Jam was a club on Crenshaw Blvd in L.A. called the Comedy Act Theater. Robin Harris hosted performances there, and he already had a serious underground buzz, from House PArty and Do the Right Thing. At the same time, everywhere Russell traveled, the "Black Comedy" nights were hot, and Russel was always looking for stuff that was "hot" with his hip-hop customer base. 105. In 1989, he eventually hooked up with Hollywood power player Stan Lathan (Sanford & Son, Hill Street Blues, Miami Vice, Remington Steele ,Cagney & Lacey, Frank's Place, Roc and the 1984 classic feature film Beat Street) and they began creating Def Comedy Jam. 106. The original run of Def Comedy Jam ran from July 1, 1992 to January 1, 1997. In the fall of 2006 it returned to HBO. Many comedians had their careers launched by the huge success of this series! 107. Robin Harris was going to be the original host, but he died in 1990. Eddie Murphy was a big supporter of Martin Lawrence to replace Harris. 108. The show caught major criticism for using excessive foul language and a “supposed” negative representation of African Americans. Bill Cosby and Sidney Potier were major critics. 109. Def Comedy Jam, went on to become the longest running HBO series ever, launched the careers of several A-List comedians today. 110. 1992 Alumni: 111. Always ahead of the curve, self-made fruit juice billionaire Johnty Del Monte has been in self isolation since 2008. Speaking via his platinum satellite phone in the Bahamas, JDM said: “These are dark times, and I appreciate not everyone is able to play golf on their yacht. So I thought I’d do what I do best- no, not tinning fruit, but playing records. So here’s a mix to bring some sunshine into your lives. And it’s all killer no filler, there’s no obscure funk 45s on this- I had to chuck them at some French fishermen who were trying to slip stream me in the Bay of Biscay. Anyway, gotta go, I’m supposed to be playing a rave set via Zoom to some pensioners in Tuscany. Stay lucky.”

P.M. Dawn were one of the most revolutionary voices in hip-hop history and, frankly, they don't get the credit they deserve. Led by primary creative visionary Prince Be, the sibling duo brought colors and textures to rap that weren't there before and have influenced the more creative hip-hop we hear today. Sadly, Prince Be passed away last year, one of the many heart-breaking deaths from 2016, putting an end to a singular vision and voice. We are honored to have his partner and brother DJ Minutemix (aka Eternal, aka Jarrett Cordes) on this week to fill us in on how the family is doing, what Be was like and the spriritual influences of their music, the story behind giant hits like "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" and "I'd Die Without You", and why someone named Doc G is out there calling himself P.M. Dawn.

We’re talking about kidney disease and diabetes on our 6th AnniversaryDiabetes Late Nite podcast with musical inspiration from P.M. Dawn. Prince Be, the frontman for the psychedelic pop-rap group P.M. Dawn, which in the early 1990s died of renal failure resulting from complications of diabetes at age 46. Prince Be had suffered from diabetes for more than two decades, and had various health problems over the years, among them several strokes, including one in 2005 that left him partly paralyzed, and gangrene, which led to the partial amputation of one leg.  P.M. Dawn stood out for its hippie-esque mysticism, fantastical imagery, Christian references and ethereal musical aesthetic. Prince Be’s performance style blurred the lines between rapping and singing, and between the earthly and the spiritual. P.M. Dawn’s single “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” — based on a sample of the new wave standard “True,” by Spandau Ballet — which became the first rap song by a black act to top the Hot 100, Billboard’s pop singles chart. In 2005, P.M. Dawn appeared on the NBC reality show “Hit Me, Baby, One More Time.” Prince Be, who had suffered a stroke, had to be assisted onto the stage and performed from a seat. The group donated their $20,000 prize to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Guests: Poet Lorraine Brooks, Mama Rose Marie, the Charlie's Angels of Outreach, Lynette Luckers from the Marion Luckers Kidney Foundation, Chef Robert Lewis aka 'The Happy Diabetic', Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, FAND and Leon Petrossian.  Diabetes Late Nite is a fast-paced, full-filled hour of diabetes education and wellness advice that encourages listeners to “laugh a little, learn a lot.”

Alright summer is here!  That means lots of time outside, in the pool, and by the grill which obviously necessitates all kinds of new music.  Today I have for you a sampling of different directions to go when you start thinking about what kind of summer music mix you are looking to go for.  This is really one of my favorite types of podcasts.  I've got the newest sounds I'm jamming combined with classics from my past.  I actually had to order two physical compact discs because I couldn't find the albums digitally!!  For me, last summer was all about the amazing albums from Quantic and Jungle mixed in with some afro funk and high life.  Something tells me I am going to be doing some recycling of those but there are many solid additions to get into.As I write this I am remembering that I completely forgot to put a track from Clean Bandit on the mix.  My bad!!  Here's the track I was gonna use. "Come Over"  Without it, the mix is missing that taste of dancehall, which is a summer must.  They were amazing at Coachella.  Watching them from the shade of the palm trees while they owned the mid day main stage is the definition of an ideal Coachella moment.  I'll make it up to them on a podcast soon but you should check out their album New Eyes.  Classically trained band playing their version of house music.  So good. Links referenced in the podcast:Awesome unofficial Kaytranada videoThomas Mapfumo on Afropop Worldwide #1Thomas Mapfumo on Afropop Worldwide #2As a side note, I really try to keep all comments on the podcast positive but I must share my complete disdain for Adobe Audition's recording.  I switched over from Audacity around podcast 30 or so because the sound processing tools were a little better.  While I may still use it for post processing, never again will I trust it for recording the voice over.  This is the second time that upon closing, Audition not only deleted all the temp files but also the sound files I had saved, multiple times.  Searching around on the internet, I found I am not the only person to run into this serious issue.  And even worse, this is the second time it's happened to me.  Shame on me.  Luckily, this time I had already exported a draft so I didn't have to rerecord the whole podcast but it means I didn't get to go back and balance all the levels just right, fix some plosives, etc...  Anyway, if I hadn't said anything you probably wouldn't have noticed but I don't want any of y'all to run into this same problem.  Use something else for recording.  Now let's pump the positivity and get the jams goin!!Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,Aaronaaron@activelistenerpodcast.com Tracklist (these are links to buy the songs)1.Mabasa (Work) by Thomas Mapfumo on Mabasa2.Dancing On Quicksand by Bad Suns on Language & Perspective3.The Boys of Summer by The Ataris on So Long, Astoria4.Too Drunk to F*** by Nouvelle Vague on Nouvelle Vague5.Let It Carry You by José González on Vestiges & Claws6.Far Nearer by Jamie xx on Far Nearer / Beat For - EP7.Helios ft.
