Sean McDowell and John Marriott authored a new book entitled Set Adrift. It's a fantastic guide to help someone wrestling with what they believe without giving up on their faith altogether. In this episode, I discuss the topic of deconstructing without deconverting with John Marriott. John teaches at Biola University and Whittier Christian High School. Professor, former Pastor and Author Dr. John Marriott talks "deconversion" in Part One and "deconstruction" in Part Two of this interview. "Anatomy of Deconversion" is John's well-researched book describing the whats and whys behind many people walking away from their faith and churches. - What is deconversion?- Is someone who used to be saved now "lost" when they deconvert?- What's the profile of the typical deconverter?- How does discipleship fit in, or not here?- How are we "catechizing" ourselves with Western culture? How does that weigh in on deconversion?Join us at The Disciple Dilemma for videos, blogs and more conversation about the "hack" facing Western discipleship!
When a fellow Christian confides in you that they're "deconstructing", what do you say and what kind of advice do you give them? Or even worse, what if YOU aren't sure what to believe anymore? It can be normal to wrestle with lingering doubts, but this slow and steady process of disillusionment often causes many people in our culture today to completely walk away from the truth of the Christian faith. So when this happens, what's the best way to help someone tackle those doubts without shipwrecking the saving grace of Jesus Christ? Our friend and Biola apologetics professor, Dr. Sean McDowell, is no stranger to struggling with doubt. In this week's podcast episode, Sean joins Frank to talk about overcoming his own season of deconstruction and how his new book (co-authored with John Marriott), 'Set Adrift: Deconstructing What You Believe Without Sinking Your Faith' can help others learn how to deconstruct in a safe way. During the episode, Sean and Frank address questions like: How does Sean define the term deconstruction? What are social imaginaries and how do they impact our worldview? What role does social media play in the deconstruction movement? What are the possible risks and benefits that can come along with deconstructing? How should Christians respond when a loved-one decides to deconstruct? Being the son of one of the most well-known and well-respected Christian apologists, Josh McDowell, didn't stop Sean from questioning if Christianity is really true. If you're in the process of deconstruction, what's your angle? Are you searching for the truth or avoiding it? Listen as Sean will encourage you to approach self-doubt with reconstruction as the end goal, allowing truth to reign supreme. North America has entered the grips of a culture war that has intensified beyond what anyone could have imagined. The culture wars have challenged many to question Christianity and ultimately deconstruct their foundational beliefs in God and themselves. With significant numbers of people leaving the church, we all have stories of the casualties. How do we stay hopeful and compassionately help the spiritually wounded to re-construct a solid foundation of faith? Join Andy Steiger and special guest John Marriott as they discuss deconstruction on this episode of the AC podcast.
“Will my kids leave the faith?” It's a legitimate concern. Drs. In January, 1958, a renowned sailing family was lost in a storm in the Bermuda Triangle. The youngest of two daughters, Sarah, suddenly an orphan, grew up never knowing her parents and grandparents. As an adult, she began to pursue the mystery of her family and their disappearance, and discovered that their stories were far different from the versions she was told. Sarah Conover's memoir follows the national media's investigation of the Revonoc's vanishing, and exposes the truths that led her to “unstory” the family history, creating a new understanding of their lives, and hers. About Sarah Conover: Sarah Conover holds a BA in comparative religions from the University of Colorado, and an MFA in creative writing from Eastern Washington University. She has worked as a television producer for PBS and Internews (an international media NGO), a social worker for Catholic Charities, a public school teacher, and taught creative writing through the community colleges of Spokane, Washington. She is the author of six books on world wisdom traditions and spirituality published by Skinner House Books, the educational publishing arm of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Her poetry, essays and interviews have been published in a variety of literary magazines and anthologies. sarahconover.com https://55fathoms.com/set-adrift/

Today I talked to Sarah Conover about her book Set Adrift: A Mystery and a Memoir (55 Fathoms Publishing, 2023). When racing yacht “The Revonoc” went down in the Bermuda Triangle's Sargasso Sea during a freakish storm in January of 1958, the sailing world was dumbfounded. The boat and five people on board, all well-known in the sailing world, completely vanished. Only the dinghy showed up a few days later, but all searches over the following months turned up nothing at all. Sarah Conover, the youngest of the two daughters of Lori and Larry, and granddaughters of Dorothy and Harvey, became an orphan that day. As an adult, Sarah began to ask questions about her parents and grandparents – her memoir weaves interviews with family members, articles, and official Coast Guard reports that Sarah studies to understand her ongoing feelings of loss, loneliness, and depression. Ultimately, her final thought is “There is no true story. Only mercy.” Sarah Conover holds a BA in comparative religions from the University of Colorado, and an MFA in creative writing from Eastern Washington University. She has worked as a television producer for PBS and Internews (an international media NGO), a social worker for Catholic Charities, a public school teacher, and taught creative writing through the community colleges of Spokane, Washington. Her poetry, essays and interviews have been published in a variety of literary magazines and anthologies. She is a feature writer and columnist for Tricycle Magazine: the Buddhist Review and has taught meditation for many years at Airway Heights Corrections Center and within the Spokane community. Ms. Conover was a recipient of Washington State's Grants for Artist's Projects (GAP grant) and writing fellowships from the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming, and the Willapa Bay Artist Residence Program in Oysterville, Washington. She lives in a condo in Spokane, Washington and in her beloved yurtiverse at the base of the North Cascades in Winthrop, Washington, where she and her husband are building a small hermitage for monastic retreats. On this episode Derek, Nick, and Justin talk about the 2017 film Super Dark Times, written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. This film is an excellent window into the life of teenage boys growing up in the late 90's, with a dark twist that pushes an already crumbling friendship to the brink. Directed by Kevin Phillips, this film is an absolute masterpiece in tone, audio, and cinematography that all culminates into a dreamlike world of nostalgia. With a cast of all unknown (at the time) actors that absolutely smash it out of the park, we cannot recommend this one enough.

Welcome to Episode 70 of Glory Days of Gold, the East Fife and Scottish football podcast recorded across two continents. It's bleak down Bayview way after back to back home games saw East Fife take just one point, remain goalless in 2022, and cut eight points adrift at the bottom of Scottish League One, sailing into the oblivion that is the bottom tier. Where did all the good times go? You might have to cast your mind back a fair bit for those. But it's not all doom and gloom! The fab four are reunited once again to pick over the bones of those Falkirk and Peterhead games, ponder if we'll ever score again, look at whether we should just throw the young boys in now, and wonder where are the new faces to help us. Can some pride be restored before the end of the season? Come for the football chat, stay for the talk about mint yoyos.

The Koli community in Mumbai-which has been practicing fishing for centuries-has experienced rapid changes over the last few decades, in the forms of increased mechanization, export of fish to global markets, and the pressure of urbanization on their living and workspaces. The capitalist transformation in fishing has altered what was once a caste-based practice to one that brought to it investors from outside the community, migrant workers, and ecological degradation. The resultant loss of revenue, jobs, and catch for artisanal fishers has led to movements demanding fishing rights to be granted to traditional fisher communities alone and for a return to older fishing practices. This call found resonance with populist politics in the city: Koli women organized themselves to stridently resist the entry of migrant men into the sector and Koli men-particularly the young-became inclined to move out of the practice of fishing. Through an examination of the lives and struggles of fishers in one of India's wealthiest cities, Set Adrift: Capitalist Transformations and Community Politics along Mumbai's Shores (Oxford UP, 2021) looks at how contestations around livelihoods map out in the shadow of significant encounters between capitalism and ecology. Gayatri Nair is Assistant Professor of Sociology, Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, New Delhi, India. Raised in a loving, committed LDS home in southern Idaho, Susan knew little about life and faith that wasn't Mormon. In this candid and winsome interview, she shares how God used a cross necklace in her mother's jewelry box, and the breakup of her older siblings temple marriages to awaken her curiosity. However, exposure to the wider religious world of Salt Lake City, along with uncomfortable experiences with her LDS church leaders while in college at BYU turned that curiosity to disillusionment, and she found herself adrift without the family and faith that had sustained so much of her life. Can God move into her broken life and marriage to restore joy and hope?

According to Russel Simmions, In his book "Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money + God" The inspiration for Def COmedey Jam was a club on Crenshaw Blvd in L.A. called the Comedy Act Theater. Robin Harris hosted performances there, and he already had a serious underground buzz, from House PArty and Do the Right Thing. At the same time, everywhere Russell traveled, the "Black Comedy" nights were hot, and Russel was always looking for stuff that was "hot" with his hip-hop customer base. 105. In 1989, he eventually hooked up with Hollywood power player Stan Lathan (Sanford & Son, Hill Street Blues, Miami Vice, Remington Steele ,Cagney & Lacey, Frank's Place, Roc and the 1984 classic feature film Beat Street) and they began creating Def Comedy Jam. 106. The original run of Def Comedy Jam ran from July 1, 1992 to January 1, 1997. In the fall of 2006 it returned to HBO. Many comedians had their careers launched by the huge success of this series! 107. Robin Harris was going to be the original host, but he died in 1990. Eddie Murphy was a big supporter of Martin Lawrence to replace Harris. 108. The show caught major criticism for using excessive foul language and a “supposed” negative representation of African Americans. Bill Cosby and Sidney Potier were major critics. 109. Def Comedy Jam, went on to become the longest running HBO series ever, launched the careers of several A-List comedians today. 110. 1992 Alumni: 111. On the anniversary of the mutiny on the HMAV Bounty, Michael is joined by Rob Mundle, journalist, competitive yachtsman & Author – including ‘Bligh: Master Mariner’, to learn more about the life and career of Captain Bligh, who was set adrift by mutineers on this day in 1789. In 1787, Lieutenant Bligh, as he then was, took command of HMAV Bounty. In order to win a premium offered by the Royal Society, Bligh was to first sail to Tahiti to obtain breadfruit trees, then set course east across the South Pacific for South America and the Cape Horn and eventually to the Caribbean Sea. The Bounty never reached the Caribbean, as mutiny broke out on board shortly after the ship left Tahiti. Because the vessel was rated only as a cutter, Bounty had no officers other than Bligh (who was then only a commissioned lieutenant), a very small crew, and no Royal Marines to provide protection from hostile natives during stops or to enforce security on board ship. Despite being in the majority, none of the loyalists put up a significant struggle once they saw Bligh bound, and the ship was taken over without bloodshed.

Your hosts: Erik Klemetti and Janine KrippnerWe banter about pumice rafts and why they're so cool, why bad Op-Eds in newspapers about volcanoes are not cool, the dangers of pyroclastic flows moving over water and the recent global eruption activity. We then dive into answering listener questions, including how volcanoes get names, whether there is a set pattern to volcanic activity over a volcano's life, what is the most hazardous volcano in the U.S., why anorthosite are weird and why never nuke a volcano (or hurricane).Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/popularvolcanics)

P.M. Dawn were one of the most revolutionary voices in hip-hop history and, frankly, they don't get the credit they deserve. Led by primary creative visionary Prince Be, the sibling duo brought colors and textures to rap that weren't there before and have influenced the more creative hip-hop we hear today. Sadly, Prince Be passed away last year, one of the many heart-breaking deaths from 2016, putting an end to a singular vision and voice. We are honored to have his partner and brother DJ Minutemix (aka Eternal, aka Jarrett Cordes) on this week to fill us in on how the family is doing, what Be was like and the spriritual influences of their music, the story behind giant hits like "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" and "I'd Die Without You", and why someone named Doc G is out there calling himself P.M. Dawn.

We’re talking about kidney disease and diabetes on our 6th AnniversaryDiabetes Late Nite podcast with musical inspiration from P.M. Dawn. Prince Be, the frontman for the psychedelic pop-rap group P.M. Dawn, which in the early 1990s died of renal failure resulting from complications of diabetes at age 46. Prince Be had suffered from diabetes for more than two decades, and had various health problems over the years, among them several strokes, including one in 2005 that left him partly paralyzed, and gangrene, which led to the partial amputation of one leg. P.M. Dawn stood out for its hippie-esque mysticism, fantastical imagery, Christian references and ethereal musical aesthetic. Prince Be’s performance style blurred the lines between rapping and singing, and between the earthly and the spiritual. P.M. Dawn’s single “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” — based on a sample of the new wave standard “True,” by Spandau Ballet — which became the first rap song by a black act to top the Hot 100, Billboard’s pop singles chart. In 2005, P.M. Dawn appeared on the NBC reality show “Hit Me, Baby, One More Time.” Prince Be, who had suffered a stroke, had to be assisted onto the stage and performed from a seat. The group donated their $20,000 prize to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Guests: Poet Lorraine Brooks, Mama Rose Marie, the Charlie's Angels of Outreach, Lynette Luckers from the Marion Luckers Kidney Foundation, Chef Robert Lewis aka 'The Happy Diabetic', Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, FAND and Leon Petrossian. Diabetes Late Nite is a fast-paced, full-filled hour of diabetes education and wellness advice that encourages listeners to “laugh a little, learn a lot.”
Alright summer is here! That means lots of time outside, in the pool, and by the grill which obviously necessitates all kinds of new music. Today I have for you a sampling of different directions to go when you start thinking about what kind of summer music mix you are looking to go for. This is really one of my favorite types of podcasts. I've got the newest sounds I'm jamming combined with classics from my past. I actually had to order two physical compact discs because I couldn't find the albums digitally!! For me, last summer was all about the amazing albums from Quantic and Jungle mixed in with some afro funk and high life. Something tells me I am going to be doing some recycling of those but there are many solid additions to get into.As I write this I am remembering that I completely forgot to put a track from Clean Bandit on the mix. My bad!! Here's the track I was gonna use. "Come Over" Without it, the mix is missing that taste of dancehall, which is a summer must. They were amazing at Coachella. Watching them from the shade of the palm trees while they owned the mid day main stage is the definition of an ideal Coachella moment. I'll make it up to them on a podcast soon but you should check out their album New Eyes. Classically trained band playing their version of house music. So good. Links referenced in the podcast:Awesome unofficial Kaytranada videoThomas Mapfumo on Afropop Worldwide #1Thomas Mapfumo on Afropop Worldwide #2As a side note, I really try to keep all comments on the podcast positive but I must share my complete disdain for Adobe Audition's recording. I switched over from Audacity around podcast 30 or so because the sound processing tools were a little better. While I may still use it for post processing, never again will I trust it for recording the voice over. This is the second time that upon closing, Audition not only deleted all the temp files but also the sound files I had saved, multiple times. Searching around on the internet, I found I am not the only person to run into this serious issue. And even worse, this is the second time it's happened to me. Shame on me. Luckily, this time I had already exported a draft so I didn't have to rerecord the whole podcast but it means I didn't get to go back and balance all the levels just right, fix some plosives, etc... Anyway, if I hadn't said anything you probably wouldn't have noticed but I don't want any of y'all to run into this same problem. Use something else for recording. Now let's pump the positivity and get the jams goin!!Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists,Aaronaaron@activelistenerpodcast.com Tracklist (these are links to buy the songs)1.Mabasa (Work) by Thomas Mapfumo on Mabasa2.Dancing On Quicksand by Bad Suns on Language & Perspective3.The Boys of Summer by The Ataris on So Long, Astoria4.Too Drunk to F*** by Nouvelle Vague on Nouvelle Vague5.Let It Carry You by José González on Vestiges & Claws6.Far Nearer by Jamie xx on Far Nearer / Beat For - EP7.Helios ft.
