The Last Cuentista is a winner of the Newberry Medal award, and is the second book by author Donna Barba Higuera. It is a fast paced, middle-grade dystopian sci-fi, and yet it has so much depth and maturity in its themes.  We were able to discuss many topics at length including immigration, the importance of storytelling, genetic enhancement, collective working, and what connects us. Azul Uribe is a bi-cultural woman who was partially raised in the U.S.—Texas and Mexico. She is currently working on a book of essays, and lives in Merida Mexico, with her two cats, where she owns no high heels and never wears pants. She has been featured in The Daily Dot, and the Anthologies Los Otros Dreamers (2014) and Somewhere We Are Human (Harper Collins 2019). We talk about Azul's personal story, as it deals with deportation, and the U.S. immigration policies and other systemic failures that make the path to citizenship unattainable.

The cenotes in Merida Mexico.  An afternoon with Merida Gay Tours.  Chill trance with a little bit of classical mixed in. Ricardo provides the best personal tours. He tells me a story about coming out to his father and his father's advice proves to be the most loving advice. "Have a son" his father tells him. I thought about this for a moment, considering what Ricardo himself must have meant to his father. This stuck with me for a while as we drove and I looked out into the surrounding forests. He made sure we caught just the perfect light for the best cenote. On arrival we descended the stairs into the cave, which had a family with children. Of course I hated that, but soon enough they left and the cenote was quiet. I explored the water surrounded by minnows as Ricardo did his own thing. Overall this tour of the cenotes was well worth the trip on its own."In Mayan mythology, the cenotes represented a passage to the underworld, or "Xibálba" the kingdom of death. They are natural pools of crystal water created by the erosion of the limestone that surrounds them. They are connected by the longest underground river network in the world, and they are exclusive environments of the Yucatán Peninsula."I took the Xibálba Tour, but tours also include the Mayan ruins, the beaches and tours through local towns and historical places.

This week on the podcast we are continuing to share our Mexican adventures! The first weekend trip we took in Mexico was to visit friends in Merida, Mexico. Prior to being in Mexico, we had never even heard of Merida, and we were pleasantly surprised when we visited. Merida is in the Yucatan state of Mexico, and it's know for it's cute historic center, amazing food, and cenotes! We had 3 days to explore Merida, and on this episode we share what our experience was like in Merida. We also pulled in our fellow travel bloggers and friends Meg & Tom from Food, Fun Travel, Nathan Aguilera from Foodie Flashpacker and Nate Hake from Travel Lemming who were all living in Merida when we went to share some of their recommendations to eat, see and do, what they love about Merida, and why it's a great hub for digital nomads.  Enjoy! This episode of The World Wanderers is sponsored by AutoSlash. AutoSlash is the #1 site for getting a great deal on a car rental. They figure out the best coupons and discount codes to get you the lowest rate possible, and then track prices on your rental right until the day you pick up the car. If they find a lower rate, they email you so you can lock in the savings. It's like price protection on your rental. They can even track the price of rentals made on other websites. AutoSlash has saved customers millions of dollars on car rentals. It's completely free - give it a try on your next booking!
