Send us a Text Message.Welcome to the Community Strategy Podcast. I'm Deb Schell, the host. I'm excited to introduce today's guest, Eli Walker! She designs events and programs that build play into belonging in the modern world and how to use play to facilitate more engaging meetings. Equipped with a BFA in Theater from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and as the founder and author of Drunk Yoga® (now The Uplift Experience), Eli pioneered the wellness entertainment movement to bridge the gap between #selfcare and #communitycare through her social yoga events. Since then, she has used immersive storytelling and mindfulness practices to support tens of thousands of individuals and hundreds of institutions across the globe—including NYU and Columbia University, as well as Barclay's, eBay, Intel, Google, Pinterest, and Mastercard—in building meaningful belonging for themselves and their teams in our modern, remote world by leveraging the art of play in live experience design. Eli has always loved helping people from different backgrounds get on the same page. Bonus points if she can achieve this while inspiring them to live joyfully, empowering them with new perspectives, and making them laugh simultaneously. When you work with Eli, you can expect to play, move, laugh, and walk away feeling empowered with tools to create a more connected world.During this interview, Eli shares her entrance into the community industry. She describes community-based theater as an immersive performance art in which the facilitator and storytellers go into existing communities and use live storytelling theater to help participants tell their stories and bridge sociological barriers. Send us a Text Message.Welcome back to The Community Strategy Podcast! In this episode, you'll hear the first half of a recording of an event in March of 2024 inside Community Builders with Purpose, an online membership for community builders. During the session, Brian Helfman, the host of Third Nature, an online and in-person community, helped thousands of people cultivate clarity, creativity, and connection while having more fun. In addition to the community, Brian has consulted with organizations to help them build more connections and cultivate a sense of community. In the second part of this discussion, Brian talks about how he built a team and continues to redefine terms of what he does. Still feeling like a solo entrepreneur, Brian's team is project- and deadline-driven, with a clear start and end date and time to reevaluate the project. When building a membership, Brian selected Circle, an online community platform that is flexible for For Brian, an online membership isn't a good fit. In the interview, he shared that the seasonality of timed programs works better for him and his team. It takes the pressure off “having to provide or generate value,” Brian said. Workshops led by community members lead to connections and growth because the members are relatable. His success is uncertain, and his workshop is a vehicle to learn. The “free time” is where the magic happens. “Nudging people in the right direction and creating conditions for authentic connection and fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment to feel fully self-expressed,” Brian said. The community plans to continue focusing on in-person experiences, however. There are enough people who will always crave in-person experiences. From Brian's experience, the connection is cultivated more deeply when in person, but the online connection is really important. Third, Nature values accessibility. Before attendees sign up and commit to the summer camp, many potential participants join conscious convThanks for listening to the Community Strategy Podcast! Welcome back to the Community Strategy Podcast! I'm thrilled you are here and excited to jump into this new episode! Since opening Community Builders with Purpose, I've been reminded that we can learn much from our peers. I've been looking for ways to support my clients and encourage them to move faster by focusing on a few or, better yet, one option at a time. I was looking for speakers to join the community when Windy Lawson shared her talk about "Thriving with TMI” (Too Many Ideas). Windy joins the Community Builders with Purpose in a pre-recorded presentation to community members. Since 2017, Windy has been on a journey to help female microbusiness owners in the start-up phase or those who've recently turned a part-time side hustle into a full-time gig. You are in the right place if you are tired of chasing shiny objects that the gurus told you are the holy grail of success."Where do you seem to get your best ideas?" Windy asks at the beginning of this session. She works with women who are creating a business independently. In that space, she said that getting ideas or deciding on an idea "gets a bad rap."We say things like we are "chasing squirrels" or "shiny object syndrome," which is why the idea seems to get the brunt of the criticism—Windy points out that ideas are powerful and are what push us forward. In this episode of the Community Strategy Podcast, you'll hear experts of the Creator to Community Builder book. Deb reads a chapter about community design and the architecture of an online community. A well-thought-out community aligns with the group's host's vision, mission, and purpose. Leading an online community requires deciding how you want to communicate with your members and understanding how they enjoy connecting with each other. When working with a client to restructure their community, I start by identifying a purpose for each area of the community. A common problem for many community builders is knowing how many destinations to have available for people to meet, connect, and engage. The structure you establish will influence other design elements like your community's culture. It will provide the framework for your host, leader, and/or manager to help your people build habits and cultivate rituals. Think about how you want to communicate; your personal communication style is an important factor to consider. In addition, your community must be easy to access. Due to the global pandemic, the world had to adjust to living in a bubble and withdrawing from in-person social connections. I don't know about you, but the events of those years shifted my perspective on how I spend my time. Most people I've talked with have shared that they've enjoyed exploring their hobbies, spending more time with loved ones, and building new relationships with peers with similar values, challenges, and goals. For some, that means rethinking personal lifestyle goals. Many of us have looked at how the life we're currently living stacks up to our “ideal life.” Noticing the distance between where we want to be and where we are… makes an impact. We start questioning what is accurate, and each person may answer differently. Read the show notes here. A new season of the Community Strategy Podcast is coming this Sunday, July 30th, and I'm kicking it off with a preview of a recent interview with the Community Leaders Institute. Before I dive into that episode, Let me share some of this backstory with you first. Back in 2021, a year after I launched a consulting business, I was looking for a community for consultants and couldn't find one, so I created one. After asking on LinkedIn if anyone else does community consulting, I found a few people who raised their hands. I said they wanted to meet monthly and chat about what they are doing in their businesses. Consultants usually see each other as competitors, but the group we started, now called The Community Consultants Collective, is a fantastic group of people. Now we are growing to more than 70+ members! This episode will share excerpts of an interview with Brad Weaber, who leads a discussion about why to hire a community consultant with the CCC board members Todd Nilson, Carolyn Zick, Mathijs Vleeming, John Summers, and Deb Schell.A few questions you could ask include:What is needed for your current challenge? Is there a need for a redesign of the community structure? Will there be a need for someone who is tech-savvy and has a background in operations, integration, and implementation of systems or programs?Do you need to get someone to help you increase activity in your community through hosting or co-hosting events, workshops, courses, or conferences?Founded in September of 2021, the Community Consultants Collective is a watering hole for community professionals transitioning to freelance and consulting work to get support, training, and the tools to grow their expertise. Join for free, connect with your peers, and elevate your career. Taylor shares how she's designed online learning experiences with best-selling author, Seth Godin and that her community professional experience emerged from a job she had a at local craft studio during college. “Amy Frank, the creator of The Makery, did such an incredible job building a beautiful container for community members to thrive with just enough structure and freedom for them to contribute their magic and make their experiences feel unique in that space. I learned so much watching Amy lead by example and later facilitating crafting workshops on my own.” Taylor's passion for building the opposite of loneliness is now something she practices every day in the Groove app, with members, and in her daily life. She also hosts in-person meetups in New York City, which you can learn about at https://www.taylor-harrington.com/register. Join Groove!Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!
