“Their white classmates can read Harry Potter and relate to going to Hogwarts and flying on brooms. But a Black kid can't aspire to go to Paris, which can actually happen.” – Jerry CraftGrowing up, Jerry Craft did not enjoy reading. He says he simply never encountered a children's book that intrigued him enough or felt right. But Jerry loves defying expectations, and so naturally, the boy who rarely set foot in a library grew up to become a celebrated children's book author and illustrator. He has made defying expectations—and breaking stereotypes—a guiding principle in his storytelling. Jerry Craft is a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator, best known for “New Kid,” the first graphic novel to win the Newbery Medal. “New Kid,” along with the subsequent books in the three-part series—“Class Act” and “School Trip”—were groundbreaking for middle-grade literature, especially the power of graphic novels. While many of us may know and love Jerry's more recent graphic novels, his road to those books was winding and unexpected.  In this episode, Jerry tells us about the one teacher who finally found the secret to inspiring him, explains how being a Black comic strip creator was a lot like the movie Highlander, and ponders whether his dad's night shifts might be the reason he still works best at 3 AM.Settle in for an episode filled with wry humor and the colorful stories of Jerry Craft's journey to becoming a beloved author for students and teachers alike!***Jerry curated a group of graphic novels for his reading challenge, How It Started, How It's Going. These graphic novels chronicle his own journey as a creator—from the books that inspired him to those that helped forge his path and finally to those for which he laid the groundwork. Learn more and download Jerry's reading challenge at thereadingculturepod.com/jerry-craft***This episode's Beanstack Featured Librarian is Laurie Schalliol, media specialist at Heritage Intermediate School in Middlebury, Indiana. In Episode 151 of The A&P Professor podcast, host Kevin Patton is joined by Jennifer Stokes, Rachel Hopp, and Abbey Breckling to discuss the Anatomy and Physiology Student Accommodations Handbook. This handbook released by the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), provides instructors with evidence-based suggestions and best practices for making A&P labs and classrooms more inclusive and accessible for all students. Developed by a HAPS subcommittee, the handbook offers guidance on accommodating students with a wide range of needs, from physical limitations to visual or hearing impairments. The goal is to help instructors identify meaningful alternatives to standard lab protocols that promote student success. The handbook is organized by common accommodation requests and includes sections on universal design principles, making accommodations for temporary conditions, and incorporating tactile and visual aids. The HAPS committee plans to regularly update the handbook as new strategies and technologies emerge. 0:00:00 | Introduction 0:00:48 | How It Started 0:19:33 | Blue Sky's From Now On * 0:20:38 | You Don't Know You Need It Until You Do 0:32:57 | Brain Break * 0:35:36 | Opportunities for Learning 0:47:33 | Show Business * 0:51:03 | Exploring the Handbook 1:02:44 | Staying Connected * Breaks ★ If you cannot see or activate the audio player, go to: theAPprofessor.org/podcast-episode-151.html

How It Started is not how it ended. Jamie and Eliot Share their stories and motivation for changing the culture of Sports Medicine in Brenham ISD. Eliot, before Jamie Woodall, what was your take on Athletic Trainers? I was a head football coach for 20 years in Houston We had ATs that were old school and then a series of newer ATs that really opened my eyes I wanted to move to the model of "head and assistant" vs male and female Jamie, What was your take on Athletic Directors? I have had some great experiences and some bumpy ones Many of those belong to me as being young in my career and lacking the finesse in my conversations. Why did you interview for the job with Eliot? I am happy where I am but I was willing to look. It sounds like Rudder is a situation that someone can walk into and keep the machine running.  We need someone to take care of our kids like that. I lost the Assistant AD title, I had to commute…I was losing a lot. Tell me about your “List of Demands” Calibration Radio Hydration units Water access on one of the practice fields Jamie, you got your master's to leave the profession of AT.  Why did you stay? I got a master's in public health and was really ready to leave. I could not go to work every day and be happy. I loved the AT-specific aspects of my job. Some of those things were my mental decisions, it was my mindset. Eliot, how did you help Jamie become a little more palatable? Jamie's resume was really outstanding We needed a lot of help. She really came in guarded, even stating all coaches are A**holes until proven otherwise I had a plan to get it all started, but those got changed. Physicals are starting to come in and I do not have a filing system. We hired a second AT and I pushed for a second female.  I wanted to remove the male-female divide. I wanted someone who already knew my personality. We wanted physicals every year and not just odd years. In the coaches' meeting, Eliot stole my show. I am protective by instinct.  I knew I needed to push the coaches so she didn't take the blame. “It was my job to stand on her own two feet.” The relationship between the AT and coach can be really tough.  Try to see the best in each other. The circle is now complete! We started our humble rewatch adventure with you roughly a year and a half ago, and in that time, we have worked our way through 48 episodes, a pile of books, and several tasty Specials. Now, not unlike our earnest Man in Black, we go back to where it all started: the pilot episode of the series! But wait! Because this is Twin Peaks (and Back to the Double R), there's a Twist! We couldn't resist the opportunity to go back and change history. Instead of the standard pilot, we watched the infamous “international pilot,” with its twenty-odd minutes (and they certainly are odd) tacked on to the end. It was the best of both worlds, a chance to reflect on that very first episode and to contemplate alternative universes that just don't seem quite right. This week: Colin investigates the Lynch magic that made us instant, rabid fans; Jonathan reaches back for Sheriff Harry Truman and How It Started with Cooper; Jennifer is seeing Bobs within Bobs, and other multiplicities; and Damon says it was always going to end like this. For the Twist, we savor the sweetness this alternate universe offers us via a snapshot of the wacky home life of Lucy and Andy. LISTEN: Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | BuzzSprout | Spotify | RSS | and more!S1, E1 INTERNATIONAL PILOT NOTES:David Lynch (episode director)David Lynch, Mark Frost (episode writers)

How does a talented fine jewelry designer go from working in the jewelry industry to starting her own jewelry design business? Well, this week's special guest tells us it sort of started when her work became the mascot for a close-knit community…   Meet our Bestie Julie Lamb of Julie Lamb NY. She is a career designer who received a Metalsmithing BFA from Syracuse University.  For Julie it was always all jewelry, all the time - pretty much her whole life.    Be sure to listen to this episode wherever you get your podcasts or at https://apple.co/2XXKHfC.   After starting her business nearly 7 years ago, Julie Lamb has just been named the “Rising Star” in the jewelry category, winning a prestigious award from Fashion Group International.  THIS. IS. A. BFD! And Holly was there to witness it all in person at the event!   Julie Lamb NY now has several jewelry designs, but one of her very first items incorporated her namesake: The Lamb.     According to her website, the “Be Ewe line encourages individuality in the most playful way with a lovable Lamb logo lets the ewe shine through. Make sure to 'stand out' & ‘be herd' wherever you may roam. Or just revel in your badass Black Sheep status, in black diamonds!” How fun is that???   How It Started:   Julie tells us a hilarious story of learning how to navigate her new business on social media – specifically Instagram – and did not know the power of hashtags.   After posting her first few “Be Ewe” designs using the hashtags “lamb jewelry and “sheep jewelry,” she started getting knitters and quilters - and even some sheep farmers - responding!    This New York City girl now found herself talking to sheep farmers and knitters, and even had one little customer from Future Farmers of America. They were sweet girls from Texas and other places who wanted Julie's lamb jewelry for their graduations and events. As odd as it was, it was a great learning lesson: she quickly learned how hashtags work!   This led into a direction she never could have imagined – a group of knitters invited her to their industry events like the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival. She feels she was listening to her customers and was happy to go wherever they encouraged her to go to grow her business.    It is hard to sell a new jewelry line (or any new product), but she was fortunate to find a separate audience that no other jewelers could play with. She found a community of lovely knitters who were very passionate and supportive. It was a different facet of the business, and one that helped her grow.    But all knitting aside (just kidding, she does not knit), Julie is now known for her fine CITY, Metropolis and Bespoke jewelry designs. She uses 18K yellow gold, 14K white gold and 14K rose gold for her designs – preferring the stronger yellow tone of 18K.  You can see all her work at www.julielambny.com. How to Start a Business:   As an art major, Julie is a bit mad that art schools do not teach basic business skills. Math is not her thing – not that there is anything wrong with that! – but a little accounting and a little Excel spreadsheet work would have been helpful.    She recommends that no matter what your product is, or how talented you are, you need to learn basic business skills early on to be successful. Some lessons are learned the hard way, avoid this one.    How to Style Jewelry:   We all know Holly loves to mix metals, and literally tells us that every week on these episodes. Julie's rule for wearing jewelry is ‘the more the merrier!”  If she goes out, she piles it on.    Julie's Style Tip: for the summer, mix your metals with beads. It's a lighter look, and definitely more comfortable on your skin.  Perfect for summer!   Got a Turkey Neck? Julie recommends layering longer necklaces to draw the eye down from the neck area. And then add her hoops or statement earrings to draw the eye up to your face, away from your neck. It's a miracle!   Julie has so many more fabulous nuggets and insights to share with us that are funny, smart and heartfelt. Losing a Pet: How and Why I Said Goodbye to My Best Buddy Cam

This week I said goodbye to my best buddy of 6 years, Cam, my beloved Goldendoodle. AN UNEXPECTED AND SUDDEN TURN OF EVENTS. Life as I knew it was business as usual last week. Menu planning, grocery shopping, creating blog content, and doing my day-to-day routine. Zane was out of town with our daughter and some friends on a Spring vacation in Miami.  I was home with my constant companion, Cam, doing life per usual. Little did I know that I was about to face the worst week of my life in recent memory. To make things all the more surreal, two days before my difficult journey began, I recorded this podcast on grief with my friend Dimy Mixon, a licensed marriage & family therapist specializing in grief counseling. The timing seems so surreal. HOW IT STARTED. On Wednesday, April 14th, I noticed a spot of blood on the white hide rug in my office. Thinking Cam had cut his paw on a piece of glass (I had broken a vase that morning), I took him to the vet just before they closed for the day. The vet quickly saw that the blood was from a nosebleed and that Cam had swollen lymph nodes~two symptoms that indicated a serious problem. SIX DAYS OF A ROLLER COASTER RIDE. The next six days were like a roller coaster. Blood draws and exams daily at the vet.  One emergency room vet visit in the middle of the night. Multiple tests. Different doctors at every visit. On day 3, I decided to take Cam to Auburn University Vet School to the teaching hospital. This is one of the most advanced clinics in the United States for difficult cases in animals large and small. Twice daily calls from Cam's assigned physician at Auburn were basically the same. Cam's disposition was always “bright,” “friendly,” and “loud.” The doctor told us Cam barked~a lot~from his cage. This of course was him looking for me, his mama.  On the medical side, the news was never positive. Platelets kept dropping despite every attempt to boost them. From vincristine to several other chemo drugs to a blood transfusion, my buddy was not getting better. OUR LAST DAY WITH CAM. Zane and Emma arrived home on Sunday, so I thankfully had my family nearby for what happened next.  On Monday the 19th at midnight, the phone rang. Dr. Sender's voice was grave, and I knew we were not going to get good news. Cam's platelets were still low, and he had some internal bleeding. He needed a blood transfusion to make it through the night. The next day, my daughters and I drove to Auburn. We called for them to bring Cam outside to us (COVID rules), as we were there to say goodbye. He walked out on a leash, with a sweet demeanor but obviously weak and no energy. My heart fell when I saw my normally spunky boy look so tired. With two of my daughters, we spent the day with Cam outside the vet hospital. We spread blankets under a huge tree, and we had water and food for Cam. Zane was a few hours behind, so the girls and I loved on Cam all day by ourselves. We hugged him, laid beside him, and told him how wonderful he was. We face-timed special friends who loved him and showed him videos of him with his half-brother Winston barking and playing. Cam watched them all. He was so happy to be with us after being alone in a cage. He pressed up against us and soaked in every bit of the love. We waited anxiously for Zane, as I needed him for strength to make the decision and carry it out. Cam was beginning to lose energy and cough (blood). When Zane finally arrived, Dr. Sender and his resident Brian Cali sat outside with us and talked about our options. In a nutshell, we could keep going medically with little hope, meaning Cam would be back in a cage alone away from his family and being poked and stuck daily. We chose the other option, to love Cam one last day and release him peacefully while holding him in our arms. We walked to a lovely courtyard at the vet school. Dr. Sender and Brian were beside us, not rushing us at all, and simply allowing us to grieve, cry, and give them the ok when we were ready. Cam was cradled in our arms at the end, and he had a smile on his face. I chose to step away before the last goodbye, but thankfully my family stayed until the end. My grief was so intense that I could not bear to watch his last breath. PAIN MIXED WITH BLESSINGS. Despite the excruciating pain, I've experienced myriad blessings from this ordeal. Below are just a few, as I am sure there will be more as time passes. 6 beautiful years with my boy. My 6 years with Cam were endless joy, laughter, companionship, and absolute unconditional love.  Support from close friends. The outpouring of love, support, and prayers from friends has been astounding. From my closest circle who've brought meals, visited, called, sent care packages and more….they've kept me going. Love from virtual friends. I've been blessed by an outpouring of love from friends who follow Family Savvy and know and love Cam from seeing him beside me for the last 6 years. The messages have been so kind and heartfelt, and each one has helped make my heart heal a bit more. Perspective on grief. Grief had been a distant memory for me, as I had not experienced it for several decades until now. Losing Cam has reminded me to appreciate every day with my people, as we never know what tomorrow holds. Sweet blessings from God. The last day spent with Cam was bitter, but God gave us some sweetness. The beautiful weather allowed us to enjoy our last day outside. Four of my family members were able to be present.  My best friend literally stayed by my side the entire time Zane was gone and things were getting worse with Cam.  The blessing to be able to release Cam peacefully and not watch him suffer. I know many of you have experienced the pain of losing a beloved pet. It is a pain in a class of its own, as a pet relationship is a unique one. Our pet gives unconditional love, constant companionship, and endless joy. Pets truly are a gift from God that I personally believe He will allow us to enjoy in Heaven.  He created animals in the Garden, and I believe they will be present in the new Heaven and new Earth. Either way, pets are a special gift. Thanks to you all who have reached out. Next week, I will share the journey of Cam's last week on a podcast. I feel this is therapeutic for me and for those followers who have grown to know and love Cam through Family Savvy. As always, blessings to all of you and yours.
