Episode 233 is the tenth in a series of episodes where we begin to explore the radical right groups of the 1960's that clearly had great motive to murder president Kennedy. Emerging, alongside civil rights leaders, as a prime target for ire of white racists, anti-communists, and and a wide variety of other conservative groups, President Kennedy was a a target among them all. This aspect of the assassination and the connection of the radical right is little explored. We started many episodes back, with the story of Joseph Milteer but its rather easy to pull on that string and find much more underneath the covers. Today's episode Part 10 reiterates the possibility that the radical right could have had deeper involvement in the assassination machinery and today we also explore another lesser known character on the radical right Kent Courtney. He is the first in a series of right wing characters that we will explore more deeply. Characters that help us understand more intuitively how the radical right may have fit into the picture. Characters that advance our understanding of the nexus of connections between a wide array of actors within the radical right. And with this exercise, we show how so many of these connections lead back to New Orleans and Dallas and to particular figures of the radical right including Guy Bannister. A nexus of connections with a common thread of hatred for President Kennedy. Even as early as 1964, rumors and serious concerns over the lone gunman theory and the evidence that might contravene it, were becoming a major concern for the government and the commission. Conspiracy theories were contrary to the government's stated narrative from the very beginning. This real-life story is more fascinating than fiction. No matter whether you are a serious researcher or a casual student, you will enjoy the fact filled narrative and story as we relive one of the most shocking moments in American History. An event that changed the nation and changed the world forever.

Michael Kurtz joins Steve on this episode of the Embracing Brokenness Podcast to discuss the process toward transformation in Christ. If you have been on this journey for any length of time, you know that miraculous process of transformation that begins when we say “I do” to Jesus and invite him to sit upon the throne of our hearts. It is a process. Michael shares a recent article he wrote as our ally and content contributor. "I have been on this journey. Sometimes it seems like one step forward and two steps back, and there are seasons where I am tempted to doubt whether Jesus sits upon any throne in my life, especially when I focus on all of the things I 'get wrong'. But in time we begin to see and experience real change, measurable growth, and we experience freedom where once there was captivity." And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. 2 Corinthians 3:18 --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/embracing-brokenness/support
The first Record Store Day was held in 2008 to celebrate independent brick-and-mortar music shops. Now in its 16th year, the organization has put together a new list of exclusive releases from Taylor Swift, Wilco, Miles Davis, Brian Eno, Bjork, and many more artists. Cofounders Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton join us to talk about this year's Record Store Day, on April 22, and take calls from listeners to shout out their favorite local shops.
There's an ebb and flow to the rhythms of life. There's also an ebb and flow to the process we experience in our own healing journey through Christ. Today Colleen and Steve invited Michael Kurtz to have a conversation about how we approach that journey and what those rhythms might look like in your life. But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled faces, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. "TUNE in to TURN on!" This will be a great show on "Record Store day" and the creators of some of the most Iconic Vinyl and its return! Special guest's will be calling in to discuss the evolution of Vinyl and its comeback ! Michael Kurtz is the founder of "Record Store Day," conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day was launched with Metallica on April 19, 2008 and is widely credited for the relaunch of the vinyl industry. Today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica, and it is considered the largest and biggest music event in terms of worldwide participation in history. Before co-founding "Record Store Day," Michael Kurtz served as the President of The Department of Record Stores (The DORS), the largest coalition of record stores in North America. As President Michael worked with a board of dynamic record storeowners, artist managers, as well as record labels and music and film distributors. The DORS has 72 storefronts in the USA and 12 in Canada. In 2013, Michael Kurtz was given the honor of "Chavalie De L'Ordre Des Arts Et Des Lettres" by the French Ministry of Culture. The receipt of this honor is the equivalent of being knighted and was an acknowledgment of contributions to music culture worldwide. In 2014, Michael Kurtz was given the Independent Spirit Award by the National Association of Retail Merchandisers for his work with Record Store Day, and in 2015 Michael Kurtz was given a Libby Award by the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) for being independent record label's best ally. http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home

Episode #10: At the height of the vinyl industry, over a billion units were being pressed per year in the United States. But, after the advent of the cassette and compact disc, vinyl production numbers dipped down into the hundreds of thousands. Now that vinyl "is back", and production figures are back up in the millions, what does this mean for the music industry, exactly? For major labels, and their high-dollar re-issue box sets, its been a welcome source of "new" revenue, but for many of the independent labels, that kept the format alive throughout the downturn, this vinyl resurgence has resulted in longer wait times and lower quality product -- at a time when demand for their product has never been higher. In this episode, we visit the newest, and only, record pressing plant in the Northwest, Cascade Record Pressing, and talk to the owners (Adam Gonsalves, Amy Dragon, and Mark Rainey) about the niche they hope to fill in this exploding market, and how they hope to live through their experiences as label owners and master engineers. After that Portia speaks with one of the founders of Record Store Day, Michael Kurtz, who's organization is often credited with starting the vinyl resurgence. Finally, Portia talks with Darius Van Arman of Secretly Canadian about what the shift to a global release date means for U.S. retail stores that are trying to keep up with this new, increased demand for vinyl.
Great ideas start small. One man. One problem. One idea. Six years ago the music business was in a freefall. Corporate record stores were going out of business seemingly daily and independent record stores were struggling to keep their doors open. And then a small group of record aficionados and independent record store owners got together and hatched a great idea. A day designed to foment interest in record stores by connecting bands and fans in their common love of music. A day intended to stir the coals of interest in the archaic but uber-cool vinyl record format. A day to celebrate all that is cool about independent record stores. A day called Record Store Day. It started small - a handful of stores and several exclusive releases. By 2013, Record Store Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday in April and it features hundreds of exclusive releases by artists large and small in thousands of record stores worldwide. Michael Kurtz was one of those co-founders of Record Store Day and part of that great idea was his. He watched the retail music business dying and he didn?t like what he saw. So the seeds were sown, and then they grew, and now, on Record Store Day 2013, music fans around the world can drop into their neighborhood record store on a Saturday in April, catch a rocking in-store performance by a great band, pick up a stack of vinyl records and celebrate all that is right with the world.
Today is National Beer Day, so obviously we drank a lot of that. But even more importantly was our interview with Michael Kurtz of National Record Store Day (April 20th) to talk about how vinyl may just save the music industry. To top it all off, we were also joined by our friend Matt Cluthe (stick around till the very end to hear his Cluthe/Lee song, London Dream). We also give a review to the fantastic John Denver tribute album, National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month, Bird flu vs North Korea, Tarantulas the size of your face, Melissa McCarthy is SNL's lifeline, a sad goodbye to Roger Ebert and his Top 10 Worst Movies, and all our usual stuff. A big thanks to Mainbrew.com, Michael Kurtz, Matt Cluthe, and you for tuning in and listening.
