Did you know that without migrant farm workers, the price of dairy would be twice as expensive? Dairy farming is one of the most challenging jobs in agriculture, and like a lot of farmwork has notoriously weak legal protections for workers, leading to long hours, poor pay, and unsafe conditions. Host Ashely C. Ford tells the story of how a group of farmworkers came together after a senseless tragedy to demand change – and together built a safety net to protect their most vulnerable workers. When invited to speak at the recent Gates Foundation Goalkeepers 2030 event, Mikaela Loach seized the opportunity to announce that capitalism is causing climate change and “billionaires shouldn't exist.” This young climate justice activist has been fighting fossil fuel projects in the UK using a variety of tactics. She is one of three claimants who has taken the UK government to court for handing over taxpayer money to fossil fuel companies in violation of their commitments to reach net zero emissions. Mikaela has been heavily involved in the #StopCambo campaign that successfully shut down development of the Cambo oil field. She and others in this campaign continue to fight the development of Rosebank, the biggest untapped oil field in the North Sea. If the oil and gas in this massive field are burned, they will create more CO2 than all the total emissions from all 28 low-income countries. #StopeRosebankMikaela is a 5th year medical student and the co-host of the YIKES Podcast – a show that focuses on the things that make us go “Yikes!” – from the climate crisis to racial capitalism. David Van Deusen, president of the Vermont State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, talks to Steve about their radical ten-point program, adopted in 2019. In the interview, he explains why they were spurred to develop the plan and breaks down what it means in practice as they move away from lobbying and expand their focus on the rank-and-file. This includes training workshops for non-union workers – How to Organize 101. David describes their approach to building a social justice-oriented labor movement. They work with groups like Migrant Justice to support efforts to ensure safe and fair working conditions for undocumented farm workers. They seek to build bridges to non-labor organizations, “be they farmer or environmental groups, (who) are ready and able to embrace our core working class values.” The fifth item of the ten-point plan calls for a Green New Deal. This is followed by item number six, “Electoral Politics,” which begins: “The time of the VT AFL-CIO endorsing candidates simply because they are a Democrat is over.” Below are excerpts from the preamble to the Vermont AFL-CIO Ten Point Program: A NEW PATH TOWARDS PROGRESSIVE CHANGE FOR LABOR Organized Labor has been the most powerful force for change in the History of the United States of America. From the 8 hour day/40 hour work week, the establishment of the weekend, livable wages (in Union shops), to workplace safety standards; Labor has won these foundational victories through collective action and solidarity. However, for some decades Labor, nationally, has been on the decline. … This wilting of Labor does not have to be. We can (and must) be a social and political power once again; one capable not only of defending against the attacks we now face from DC, but also of going on the offensive and delivering positive life altering changes for working people. But we will not achieve our potential if we stay on the road more traveled. We cannot continue to do what we have always done and expect a different result. Nor can we be satisfied with candidates that run for Union office who support all the good things, but who neglect to tell us how we will get there. Instead we must be bold, we must experiment, and we must forge a way forward which not only transforms the Vermont AFL-CIO, but also delivers a powerful Labor Movement with the muscle needed to transform Vermont as a whole. And here, the Vermont we intend to deliver is one wherein working class people not only possess the means to live a secure and dignified life, but one where we, as the great majority, wield the democratic power required to give social and political expression to the many. Such a transformative potential presupposes first a unity around an effective program, and second the development of our immediate political power. To learn more about Vermont AFL-CIO and see the ten-point plan in its entirety, go to https://vt.aflcio.org/news/vermont-afl-cio-ten-point-program David Van Deusen, President of the Vermont State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, was elected to office in 2019 as part of the progressive United! Slate. He is a member of AFSCME Local 2413 (Northeast Kingdom), serves on the Labor for Single Payer national Advisory Board, and is a member of Labor Against Racism & War's national Representatives Assembly. The students graduating from Vermont's high schools this year are extraordinary in many ways. For most of high school, they have been on the frontlines of a global pandemic. They attended school from their bedrooms. They had to find the strength to forge connection and community while enduring personal isolation. They returned to school wearing masks to keep each other and their families safe as the pandemic raged around them. Now, like young people everywhere, they dream of a brighter future — and are actively building it. They are the ones we have been waiting for.On this Vermont Conversation, we speak with five remarkable members of the class of 2022. Ava Thurston from Harwood Union High School has been Vermont state champion in both cross-country skiing and running in all four years of high school, won the U18 national championships in cross-country skiing this year, and aspires to ski in the Olympics. Yahir Ramirez from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans is the son of Mexican farmworkers in Vermont who volunteers with Migrant Justice, and he soon will attend Harvard. Addie Lentzner from Arlington Memorial High School helped prod Gov. Phil Scott to extend emergency housing for people experiencing homelessness during the pandemic. Kiara Mack of Winooski High School is an all-star soccer player and team captain who confronted racism directed at student-athletes. Sawyer Totten is a transgender student and LGBTQ+ leader who inspired peers from around the state to walk out and speak out to protest the national wave of anti-trans legislation. These students have made a lasting mark on their communities. Now, they are heading out to change the world. For Ramirez, who will be a first-generation college student when he attends Harvard, graduating Bellows Free Academy “really means a lot to the family because it really just shows that we're able to do it. … My background or my color, it doesn't limit me.”Kiara Mack says that she struggled to get through high school until she finally felt she was being heard. Then she emerged as a student leader against racism. “I'm proud of the impact I have on people. I have a lot of younger students who I try to steer more in the right path because I feel that I can connect with them on a different level,” she said. “I'm really happy with the imprint I've left on my school and who I am being seen as I am graduating.”
In today's episode, we'll talk about why our food justice movement including food banks should work in solidarity with the movement for migrant justice. I recently saw a meme that showed a picture of a man holding a sign that read, "Do you know what an accent is? It's a sign of bravery." Truly, the migrant story is one of bravery. You must be brave to leave family and the only homeland you've known, embrace potentially treacherous travel and come to a new country where you know that not all will welcome you. But you do it for the potential to work, you do it for the potential for safety, you do it for a better future. Migrants make up the backbone of our American food system. They work our fields and in our restaurant kitchens yet they are among our most vulnerable for food security. They pay taxes, but immigration status is a bar to important federal food assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The charitable food bank system is one resource, but it's not a sustainable one and also can be fraught with access issues. We're talking with Claudio Rodriguez and Robert Ojeda of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. Claudio is the environmental and social justice manager and Robert is the chief program officer. Interview Summary Christina - Claudio, before we look at migration in particular, you as the environmental and social justice manager, you have the privilege of facilitating change in communities at the intersections of food justice and community organizing. Could you tell us a little bit more please about what community organizing has to do with food and food banking? Claudio - Yes, yes. I love this. Thank you for the question. I feel like community organizing is one of the key foundations that drives changes in our community because we've seen it throughout time through movements that change the condition of farm workers. That change policies and practices for the protection of workers, no matter where they find themselves. And when we bring community organizing into the space of food banking, what we are bringing is the building of relationships, using those relationships to accomplish together what we cannot accomplish on our own. In the case of food banking, it is to address the root causes of food insecurity. Christina - Claudio, could you please share an example for our listeners? Claudio - Our organizing work has actually helped change school menus to include local fresh produce. It has also created access to vacant land across our community to turn them into green spaces. Communities that often find themselves ignored, marginalized, or even just disinvested. And the purpose and mission of community organizing within food banking is to build power. To build power with our participants because without power we aren't able to change the conditions of our communities. And to break it down a little bit more for our listeners, is that when we talk about power, we're not talking about empowerment. Power is the ability to impact and affect the conditions of our own lives and the lives of others. And empowerment is more of a feel good about yourself and self-esteem. So our goal is to build power within the food banking movement so people can really change what the community looks like, feels like and their experiences. Christina - That is a really important distinction and I appreciate that so much. Because when you talk about building power, I also think about what that means for building leadership. And Robert, as the chief program officer, you develop programs that are building leadership opportunities for people from Latin America. In your anti-hunger work, what relationship have you identified between food insecurity and migration? Robert - Thank you, Christina, for the question. I think there are a few things that to me are really important. One is like a deep reflection and exploration around why we have folks coming to the US. One of the reasons from my perspective has to do with economic justice, lack of opportunities for folks. And it's very much connected to issues that we see within the food system. For example, food banks depend on donations from corporations, from companies, from growers that do have an impact on the workers that work within these companies. And so a question that I would ask and that we do ask is: what are the unintended consequences of our business model as food banks? So what is happening with the rights of those workers who are growing the food that we are able to distribute then to community members? And so in the case of us as an organization that's based at the border, having Mexico as a neighboring country, it's a really important question. Why are folks or brothers and sisters from Latin America coming to Southern Arizona? And can we do something also if we are actually getting resources, for example produce from Northern Mexico to be able to also do something so that it's not an extractive practice but rather a partnership? Questions around that from my perspective are really important. And the other thing that I think is really important to elevate is this principle that I think is really important, as an immigrant myself, I do feel like we have an incredible set of experiences, expertise that we can contribute to this community. And so as an organization with resources, I think it's our responsibility to make sure that community members, immigrant community, migrant workers and others also have access to those resources. So as an organization for example, this past year we enhance our grants program to have $3 million in grants go to organizations, many of them led by people of color who are doing really amazing work in this community. So it's this belief and commitment that for, particularly our immigrant community are able to come up with really amazing and innovative ways to address issues of food insecurity and hunger. And one last thing that to me is really kind of the beginning of part of our journey. We've been operating for 43-44 years. About 20 years ago we started doing programming that Claudio leads for example around gardening and food production education. And a lot of it had to do with our immigrant community saying, "Look, this food is not culturally relevant "or appropriate for us that you're giving us. "However, we don't know "how to do other things like grow food." And I think that was the beginning of us really rethinking our role as an organization. So it's been an incredible partnership I think over the years. Christina - Those are just some incredibly powerful examples of what you are doing to transform food systems locally for the benefit of migrant communities. What do we need to be doing more widely? What kind of role can food banks be playing at a policy level in order to address food insecurity for our migrant communities? Claudio, what do you think? Claudio - Thank you. I think that's a really important question that really ties into the intersection of community organizing and food insecurity. And at a policy level, I think we need to be advocates as food banks and folks in the food justice movement to push policies that address the root causes of hunger. But I think we should also be investing as Robert mentioned the development of community leaders. And it doesn't get more local that looking at our own organizations, what are our customs? What are our practices? And are we centering the most impacted? And to truly center them, we need to create spaces, brave spaces that challenge the status quo within our own organizations, within our own programs. And I think those are the first steps and sometimes those steps tend to be the hardest. Robert, what do you think? Based on the 20 years that we've done this work, what have been your steps that you've seen? Robert - Thank you, Claudio. I think there are, from my perspective a few things based on what we've learned that we could invest in policy-wise. One, food banks can be a vehicle, a mechanism for shifting our food sourcing business model and a food distribution business model. So we have an opportunity to come together really impact, where our food comes from. Are there any issues that we want to elevate to make sure that our donors are also paying attention to the rights of workers, as an example? Another thing I think is we have an opportunity to work with our local government, our state governments, and regionally and nationally around this idea that food is a human right. And that as we've seen now with the pandemic, some things that I think are promising is really how much more school districts are doing to make sure that school lunches are universal rather than sort of what we had before the pandemic. So there's a role around bringing healthy food to communities, a great opportunity for that. And the one that I think is very important has to do with economic justice. We were just involved in a campaign. Claudio actually was one of our leaders around fight for 15, a fight for a minimum wage in our local community, working with other nonprofits and other community members. And there was our local election and it passed. So now the City of Tucson and businesses that do business in our city are having to pay $15 an hour to our workers. And that has I think a really large impact to really benefit our immigrant community and other communities as well. Christina - I really appreciate what you said, that the fight for food justice is intrinsically linked with a fight for economic justice. That we can combat food insecurity at its start by making sure that those who are taking care of us by helping us put food in the table are able to take care of their families too, and able to afford their basic needs for food and other essentials. Thank you so much, both of you.

The products you see at the grocery store with labels that promise to protect people and the planet don't tell the full story. And oftentimes those labels are full of empty promises. But what if there was another way to ensure products are sourced from farms that put workers' rights ahead of marketing? The Vermont-based and worker-led organization Migrant Justice is doing just that. They call their Milk with Dignity program a “new day for human rights in dairy,” and in this episode we talk with organizer Marita Canedo. Topics covered include: How the struggle for human rights and against corporate exploitation spans the globe. How Migrant Justice was formed and grew to focus on fundamental rights and protections, including freedom of movement, dignified work and safe housing, and freedom from discrimination. Migrant Justice's successful campaign for driver's licenses for all people in Vermont, regardless of their immigration status. What Worker-driven Social Responsibility means and what it looks like for workers to lead in developing standards for enforceable human rights protections on dairy farms. How programs like Milk with Dignity tackle the root causes of exploitation in the food system by addressing the power dynamics. But first, here are the headlines.
HMM Correspondent Elena McGrath interviews Will Lambek of Migrant Justice about the Milk With Dignity Campaign, Hannaford Supermarkets, and the history of migration in the northeast. This is part 1 of their conversation. Part 2 of this interview will discuss the effects of the coronavirus on migrant workers, and some recent successful campaigns by Migrant Justice in the region.
In June 2020, DHS descends on nationwide protests for racial justice and throws Portland demonstrators into unmarked vans. DHS was supposed to protect us from terrorist attacks, only to be weaponized against immigrants. Now it is being deployed against U.S. citizens exercising their right to protest. Just how far will this go?
What happens when a dangerous immigration policy collides with a global pandemic? "Remain in Mexico," the Trump administration’s 2019 policy to deter immigrants from coming into the U.S., sets the stage for the spread of COVID-19 across borders. We investigate how DHS doubles down on plans to abolish immigration to the U.S. even when the coronavirus looms—sickness and death be damned.
When the Trump administration gets ahold of DHS, they implement a new, horrific policy: Family Separation. Parents and children who present themselves at the border to request asylum are torn apart. In this episode, we follow the story of Luz, a mother who comes to the U.S. with her two daughters Clarita and Isabel. They flee violence in Guatemala only to endure the agony of months-long separation.

The Obama administration builds bigger and bigger jails to lock up families and labels moms and their children national security threats. President Obama’s legacy on immigration sets the stage for President Trump’s crackdown on immigration.

"Nacho" -- member of Migrant Justice’s Farmworker Coordinating Committee --has negotiated powerful legal changes in Vermont. Jose Ignacio “Nacho” de la Cruz and Julie Kurtz discuss the path from his family farm in Mexico to the dairies of Vermont – and his aspiration for bringing basic labor and human rights to all Vermont farms through the MILK WITH DIGNITY program and ongoing campaign with Hannaford grocers. Will Lambek assists with translation.
Migrant Justice dairy farmworker leaders in Vermont have been re-writing the farm labor rules for dairy…by following the money. Julie Kurtz speaks with Migrant Justice Staff Coordinator Marita Canedo about how migrant farmworker communities have achieved policy reforms, organized for economic justice and human rights – and how you can join the MILK WITH DIGNITY CAMPAIGN so that Hannaford grocery store profits are equitably shared with workers in their supply chain.
Exploitation, heat exhaustion in a warming climate, and a heightened risk of COVID-19 are among the many challenges farmworkers face—often magnified by undocumented immigration status. Why does the law fail to protect these essential workers, and how can advocates step in where the law falls short? In this episode we speak with a Vermont-based farmworker from Mexico, activists at the organization Migrant Justice, and Vermont Law School Associate Dean Jenny Rushlow to find out. As power switches hands from Republican to Democratic leadership in 2009, the nation holds its breath, hoping President Barack Obama will fix an immigration system that has become both unfair and unwieldy. Instead, hope turns to dismay as the new administration champions the Secure Communities program, expanding the reach of ICE through local law enforcement and creating a chilling effect on immigrants’ abilities to report crimes. Hear about one such case involving a child predator working at an elementary school in Los Angeles –– and the undocumented families of the victims who were afraid to come forward. Host Erika Andiola also shares the deeply personal impact that these policies had on her family life. Discover how a program that promised “secure communities,” in fact accomplished the opposite, making everyone more unsafe in the process.
Nearly 20 years ago, Presidents George W. Bush and Vicente Fox stand side by side on the White House lawn, poised to broker a deal that would give undocumented Mexican immigrants in the US a path to becoming documented. That deal never came to pass. Days later, 9/11 forever changed the course of immigration in this country and the future for immigrants like our host Erika Andiola. Overtaken by a climate of fear, Congress and the White House created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a department with a vague mandate and almost unlimited resources. Join us as we trace the unwinding of US immigration policy and the dangerous consequences of increasingly unchecked powers of government.
In addition to staffing CBP, the federal government begins to expand immigration detention, with a mandate to add 34,000 beds in 4 years. Join us as we visit several of the Texas detention centers launched during this period. Learn how the Bush administration expanded the detention system, contracting with private companies and allowing profit motives to guide immigration policy. And hear from Cecyll Padilla, who turned himself in only to be detained.
On the heels of 9/11, early warning signs indicate that the US is changing its approach to immigration. Congress approves a hiring spree at DHS’s newly-created Customs and Border Protection (CBP), doubling the size of Border Patrol forces by 2010. CBP quickly becomes the largest law enforcement agency in the country—and the most corrupt. The impact: dire consequences for immigrants.
I'm Erika Andiola: immigrant, activist, and host of the podcast Homeland Insecurity, which asks, "How did immigrants like me become the enemy?" We answer that question by investigating the unwritten history of the Department of Homeland Security. The first 4 episodes are available now. New episodes available weekly beginning September 28.

Protesters for immigrant rights demonstrated outside the Democratic debate Thursday in Los Angeles, displaying a banner that read “Migrant Justice on Day One” and demanding a moratorium on deportations and immigrant worker protections. We look at how the candidates responded, with Erika Andiola, chief advocacy officer for RAICES, the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services. “I'm really happy that immigration came up this time around,” she notes. “In the past few debates, the issue didn't even come up.” The post Activists Demand a Migrant Justice Platform as Democratic Candidates Discuss Immigration in Debate appeared first on KPFA.
In 2017 Ben & Jerry’s reached a historic agreement with Migrant Justice, implementing the worker-driven Milk with Dignity Program in Ben & Jerry’s Northeast dairy supply chain. Julie Kurtz hosts Cheryl Pinto, Ben & Jerry’s Global Values-Led Sourcing Manager, to discuss how they’re incorporating environmental and labor values of the Green New Deal into their regional and global business. This past week, Migrant Justice in Vermont filed a federal lawsuit, alleging that several of its members were being targeted by ICE, DHS and the state's DMV just for their activism. We speak with Will Lambek of Migrant Justice about the lawsuit and how Vermont is dealing with a changing farmworker community that has literally saved the state's iconic dairy industry.

On episode of Talking Radical Radio, I speak with Daniel Tseghay and Daniel Wexel about the Transportation not Deportation campaign. It aims, in the wake of a particularly tragic case, to make public transit in the Vancouver area a place of safety and sanctuary for people regardless of their immigration status. And recently, they won a significant victory on the road to that goal. In this episode we're talking about getting up off the couch and getting involved. We spoke with Austin Davis from 350 Vermont, Daniel Quip from 350 Brattleboro, Will Lembek from Migrant Justice, Angela Berkfield from Act for Social Justice and The Root Social Justice Center, and Bob Fisher Brattleboro Town Attorney.
In this episode we focus on the joint struggle for migrant justice and prison abolition. We feature migrant justice and abolitionist organizers Aly Wayne and Abraham Paulos, and discuss the tensions between demanding citizenship and fighting for freedom. We close the show with two firsthand narratives. One from Curtis, a local Detroiter whose family has been turned upside down by the carceral state and racial capitalism, and another from Harold Gonzales, currently incarcerated inside Michigan’s Kinross prison.
On Friday January 17th, many people gathered at the DMV in Burlington and Montpelier to stand in solidarity with their immigrant neighbors in getting a driver's privilege card. Last year, as a result of grassroots organizing across the state, migrant farm workers and allies came together and won the right to drivers licenses for all, regardless of immigration status. In order to make sure the driver's privilege cards are not an indication of immigration status, allies came together to trade in their licenses for a driver's privilege card. Before winning the right to driver's licenses, thousands of migrant workers in VT were denied their fundamental right to movement. They were often isolated on farms and had to rely on others to access fundamental needs such as food and health care. Standing together in solidarity on MLK weekend, we are reminded that when our communities come together to fight collectively for our rights, anything can be achieved. The driver's licenses not only give everyone the right to movement, but represent freedom and dignity for all people.
Migrant Justice is the theme of this episode. Emily Lyons and Emily Laine bring you the headlines, then, Barry Estabrook discusses the recent successes of tomato pickers in Florida. We return to Vermont to hear from Katia Chavez, who tells us about migrant workers access to healthcare in Lamoille Valley.
On Monday, June 24th, friends and supporters of Danilo Lopez gathered at the Charlotte Congregational Church to hear his story and to take action against his deportation. Many spoke about Danilo's positive impact on the community and his diligence in fighting for human rights for all. Danilo was a leader in the passing of S.38, a bill that gives migrant workers the right to drivers licenses, and he has continued to be a human rights leader in the community. Although S.38 marks a tremendous victory, migrant workers continue to face struggles with discrimination, dignity at work, unlawful deportations and many other issues. This event brought awareness to the need for immigration policy reform not only in the state of Vermont but in the nation. The event closed with support from the audience in the form of petition signatures and videos asking that ICE close Danilo's case and allow him to stay. Many members of Migrant Justice, and friends and supporters of Danilo continue to fight Danilo's deportation and the deportation of all migrant workers locally and through the national campaign, Not One More.
Thousands of people across Vermont marched to the statehouse in Montpelier on Wednesday May 1st to participate in a day of action. The day was organized by the Put People First Campaign, which is building a movement for human rights and democracy in Vermont. Members from many different organizations and groups such as Migrant Justice, Vermont Early Educators United, environmental justice groups, homecare workers, students, children and families gathered to participate in the action fair after the march. The action fair included a healthcare screening clinic, youth tent, and many other activities representing the vision for a world where everyone's fundamental needs are met. Participants talked about how May 1st is a day to unite and come together to fight for human rights and true democracy. Immediately following May 1st, the Put People First campaign celebrated two major legislative victories. The bill recognizing homecare workers' right to organize passed the following day, and Migrant Justice's drivers license bill passed on Tuesday May 7th. Participants looked toward the 2014 legislative session and committed to continue to organize for universal healthcare, a budget that meets everyone's needs, and a future where everyone's human rights are met.
On Thursday March 14th, the Vermont Senate Transportation Committee heard testimony on S. 38, legislation that would permit all Vermont residents to be able to obtain drivers licenses, including undocumented farmworkers. The room was packed with Migrant Justice members and supporters. Danilo Lopez, a leader in Migrant Justice, testified to the ways that a lack of freedom of movement affects farmworkers. Danilo also spoke about the ways that having a drivers license would be a step forward for Vermont, and the crucial role that farmworkers play in Vermont's dairy industry. For more information on Migrant Justice and S. 38, go to http://www.migrantjustice.net/
On the first day of the legislative session this year, a unified, diverse, and growing movement of organizations called Put People First packed the Vermont Statehouse. Put People First believes Vermont can and must protect and fulfill the human rights of all its people, while ensuring a healthy and livable environment. The movement unveiled its Put People First Agenda and delivered thousands of postcards collected over the past year to legislators, showing the breadth of statewide support for making human rights a reality in Vermont. With the Put People First Agenda, the people of Vermont call on the legislature to take concrete steps to move this vision forward. The Put People First Agenda puts forth a plan for holding Vermont accountable to its obligation to fulfill the people's human rights by taking action on universal healthcare, dignified work and the right to organize, freedom of movement and access to transportation, inclusion of people with disabilities, the right to a healthy environment and livable planet for all, and a budgeting process that puts people, not money, at its center. Put People First includes 350 Vermont, Green Mountain Self-Advocates, Migrant Justice, Rising Tide Vermont, United Professionals of Vermont/AFT, Vermont Center for Independent Living, VT Early Educators United/AFT, VT Federation of Nurses & Health Professionals AFT, Vermont Workers' Center, and Voices for Vermont Children. The Vermont Workers' Center coordinates Put People First.

Inspired by the individual and collective strength of Mohamed Cherfi, Kimberley Lizano-Sossa, Fahim Kayani, Shamim Akhtar, Isabel Garcia, Wendy Maxwell, the many others that we have known, and the countless others that have had to fight alone, the Migrant Justice movement has forefronted struggles of people of color, women, disAbled and queer migrants, particularly those without full status. From the 2005 No One Is Illegal march from Montreal to Ottawa, to the first Toronto May Day of Action in 2006, to the take over of Yonge and Dundas square on May Day in 2009, we have worked tirelessly to create real meaningful change – stopping deportations, winning access to schools, and changing federal immigration policy.
Today we’re talking with Salma Al Atassi from Students Against Israeli Apartheid about the 6th annual Israeli Apartheid Week. We discuss the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions campaign; Palestinian refugees and the Right of Return; and Canada as a site of Palestinian struggle. IAW is an international series of events held in campuses and cities across the globe that educates people about the nature of Israel as an apartheid system and responds to the call from Palestinian civil society for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. Started here in Toronto, IAW took place last year in more than 40 cities.
