Today's guest has one of the most beautifully distinctive voices in contemporary jazz. Her first US project Wanting catapulted her onto the jazz charts, and she has continued to make some of the most special music in contemporary jazz to this day. Ms. Gabriela Anders was born in Argentina and moved to New York when she was 18. She grew up listening to Miles Davies, Dexter Gordon, Cuban music, Duke Ellington, Brazilian rhythm, and she liked that kind of music. She is a musician. She likes writing, composing, arranging. She is more of an intimate singer, and her passion comes from all the stuff she lived. She talks about her life, music, collaboration with other musicians, and new projects. In the ‘Bout it or Doubt it segment, Gabriela answers two questions from the Science and Technology category and gives her opinion on UFOs and Artificial Intelligence. Listen to this episode and enjoy some of her music - Fire of Love (Wanting), Shattered Love (The Ring), and I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues (Los Dukes). You can see Los Dukes live on their tour starting in November. Episode Highlights18:52 – I'm always trying to look for different rhythms to make it more exciting. I had recorded some songs with three great pianists just before the pandemic. What saved me through the pandemic was working on that project (The Ring). 28:27 – With big labels, you reach a lot of people because big labels have the power to connect with the world. Wanting was a good CD. Without a big label, it would have been a nice local CD, but it would not have reached Spain, Russia, and others the way it did. The problem with big labels is that they decided on the songs. 32:36 – ‘Bout it or Doubt it segment.36:02 – Los Dukes project. Dr. Robert Larson replays the sounds of activism against apartheid and American neo-imperial hegemony, through Artists United Against Apartheid's 1985 song, Sun City. Field recordings from South Africa's anti-segregation protests open Sun City, a single, album, and music video released in October 1985. Miles Davies, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Run DMC joined fifty Artists United Against Apartheid, a multicultural collective who boycotted performing in the racialised regime. Striking its Sun City casino complex, where capitalistic excess comingled alongside extreme poverty, these artists targeted the homeland seizures at apartheid's core. Their lyrics shine light on how apartheid accelerated British and Dutch colonial methods, and relied upon the United States' neo-imperial international hegemony. Yet Sun City's uniquely anti-West critique also speaks to American understandings of racial solidarity, questioning the role of Western musicians as political activists, fundraisers, and historians of Africa. Gabriel Jesus was crouching on the field and crying. Not even the Manchester City jersey covering his face could mask the agony.Raheem Sterling was lying across the turf, his hands crossed over his eyes. Then, the Lyon players broke away from their celebrations to console opponents distraught at being knocked out of the Champions League without reaching the semifinals for a fourth straight season.City, the most expensively assembled squad in football history, had lost 3-1 to the team that finished seventh in the French league."It's incredible because we're the surprise team," Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes said. "I don't think many people expected us to reach this stage of the competition."While Lyon prepares to face Bayern Munich in its first Champions League semifinal in a decade, City must face up to another collapse in its quest to become European champions for the first time."We need to learn — it's not good enough and that's it," said Kevin De Bruyne, who scored City's only goal to equalize before Moussa Dembélé scored twice on Saturday. "Different year, same stuff."It leaves Pep Guardiola still waiting for a first Champions League title since 2011 while coaching Barcelona, falling short in three attempts with Bayern Munich before repeated failures with City. After surrendering the Premier League trophy to Liverpool, City ends the season with only the League Cup.Guardiola's decision to deploy an unfamiliar five-man defense to match Lyon's system backfired when gaping holes were left at the back before Maxwel Cornet struck the opener in the 24th minute."We won the tactical battle as we master our system of play," Lyon coach Rudi Garcia said.De Bruyne equalized in the 69th but substitute Dembélé restored the lead 10 minutes later by putting a shot under goalkeeper Ederson after being on the pitch for only four minutes. Then came the chance to level again that will haunt Sterling. Facing an unguarded net at the far post, Sterling missed the target completely and Lyon extended its lead 59 seconds later with Dembélé scoring again. This was an error-strewn performance by City on a night when Guardiola was out-thought by Garcia, whose last major titles were the French league and cup double with Lille in 2011."Rudi Garcia has left his mark, has instilled discipline," sporting director Juninho said. "We grew up. Now we need a little humility, a little calm."For the first time since 1996 the Champions League semifinals will not feature a side from England and Spain. Instead France will take on Germany in this unique pandemic-enforced conclusion to the Champions League in Lisbon, with single games without fans rather than two-legged semifinals. After Paris Saint-Germain plays Leipzig on Tuesday, Lyon faces Bayern the following night just like it did in the 2010 semifinals. Bouyed by knocking out Juventus and City, Lyon will believe it can make the final this time, even against a Bayern side that thrashed Barcelona 8-2.City's biggest Champions League win of the season seemed to come off the pitch when its lawyers overturned a two-season ban from European competitions. But for a side that eliminated record 13-time champion Real Madrid in the previous round, losing to Lyon was not in the script.Given that a place in the semifinals was on the line, City's back line didn't rise to the challenge. The lack of urgency in dealing with Lyon's advance for the opener was careless as Fernando Marçal sent a long ball over the top from inside his own half.At that point Kyle Walker was alongside Cornet at the halfway line but the City right back lingered rather than tracking back. Aymeric Laporte also lost the advancing Toko Ekambi. Eric Garcia did run back to make the sliding tackle that prevented Ekambi from shooting. But Cornet had sprinted forward and was left unmarked to pick up the loose ball before exploiting Ederson being caught off his line. Cornet shot low past the goalkeeper into the corner of the net."Fortune smil...

Welcome everyone to Scratch a Track! In this first short episode we want to give you a roadmap for what this podcast is all about. In short, we will be taking music albums, discussing them and ultimately deciding which song to scratch off. For everyone who remembers the days of buying CDs and Vinyl records we all had the unfortunate experience of them getting scratched. It may have even happened in the middle of your favorite song leaving you to say "why this song? Couldn't it have happened to this track instead?!" Here we debate what track we would scratch if given the choice, and why. We think this will be a fun game for everyone to play who is music fan and into albums. At the very least it will make for great debate! Please join us every week as we will be discussing a new album ranging from musicians such as the The Beatles, to Dr. Dre, to Miles Davies, to Nirvana, to perhaps even Enya (probably not). You can also follow us on twitter to take part in polls, give us album suggestions, and let us know what track you would scratch.https://twitter.com/scratchatrack

Sally Jenkins: Why the 2020 Olympics must be called off now

The Devlin Radio Show

Sally Jenkins joins Miles Davies to discuss her column for The Washington Post. Call the Olympics off. It's time. The Tokyo Games cannot possibly go forward without jeopardizing people all around the world, and every day that International Olympic Committee officials hesitate, they contribute to the crisis and the imminent collapse of medical systems. A hard shutdown is the responsible thing to do, and anything less is negligent, maybe even lethally so.The models and projections are clear, and the reality on the ground is brutal, from Italy to Iran to Seattle to New York. An emergency room doctor in a large hospital in the Washington, D.C.-region, an old friend, tells me that without widespread, immediate and dramatic stay-at-home measures, coronavirus could "make the Spanish Flu look like a party." She hasn't seen her daughter in a week or her elderly father in two, and every night as she disinfects herself, she worries about colleagues in harder-hit regions who are trying to bleach and reuse protective gear meant for single use, their masks and gowns and goggles, because their supplies are already running out.I tell her that Thomas Bach, the IOC president, insists the Olympics should go forward because they are a "beacon of hope." She says, "That's beyond nonsense. The IOC should be sending a warning signal, not a beacon."Bach and other officials continue to intone that it's too early to cancel or postpone because everything might be fine by July. United States Olympic and Paralympic committee chair Susanne Lyons said in a teleconference on Friday, "We don't have to make a decision. Our Games are not next week, or two weeks from now. They're four months from now. And I think a lot may change in that time period."Wrong. They do need to make a decision - and make it now. The entire world is behind on this disease, lagging. Have they not been listening to Dr. Anthony Fauci? We don't have time. We don't have time for the IOC's hemming platitudes, and the USOPC's vague blather.Do the basic math. Things are accelerating. Cases in New York are doubling overnight. There were 245,000 cases worldwide as of Friday, and while it took three months to count the first 100,000 infections, it took just 12 days to reach the 200,000 mark. Hong Kong has reported its single biggest jump in cases to date, apparently because people are still traveling. Get it? The disease is speeding up because we aren't shutting down fast enough. We don't have time for athletes to keep training, or meeting with coaches, risking infection or becoming asymptomatic spreaders. We don't have time for women's soccer players to go to events like the one in Dallas on March 11 that may have exposed them. After which, they traveled and congregated in pro league training camps, like the Washington Spirit, which flew to West Palm just last week. The name of the game is to buy a little time - just a little time - so that hospitals can prepare and supply, or resupply or repurpose. And the way to do that is with shutdowns and social distances. So that hospitals will not become quite so crushed four months from now, and fewer patients will be sentenced to death for lack of beds and ventilators, or caregivers become sick because they lack protective gear. So that other regions don't experience what's happening in northern Italy, where Dr. Marcello Natali died just a day ago, after warning that medics had run out of latex gloves. A total of 110 doctors out of 600 in the province of Bergamo are apparently sick. "We're acting like we have time and we don't," my doctor friend says.Shut the Games down and shut them down now.The IOC and its partner USOPC are critical messengers with tremendous reach and potential for good - or bad. Messaging matters. When the NBA promptly suspended its season because of Rudy Gobert's positive test, the audience finally understood the infection threat from a handshake, or a shoulder bump, was real. When the NCAA canceled March Madness to...

Anton Corbijn is a Dutch photographer, music video director and filmmaker who has snapped anyone who's anyone in the music industry, including Bob Dylan, Bjork, Bruce Springsteen and Miles Davies. Indeed, it was he who took those iconic pictures of Joy Division in the subway tunnel, beginning a relationship which ultimately led to him bringing us the Ian Curtis biopic, Control.  Anton has also had a long-standing relationship with U2 and Depeche Mode, and it is Depeche Mode's final concert of their Global Spirit tour that is the subject of his latest project - the documentary, Spirits In The Forest, which places a specific focus on six of the band's fans. Kosningabaráttan í Danmörku er á fullu, þrjár vikur eru til kosninga og útlit fyrir að hægri stjórn Lars Løkke Rasmussen falli í kosningunum. Þar ræður mestu um að stuðningsflokkur stjórnarinnar, Danski þjóðarflokkurinn (DF), virðist stefna í að tapa helming þess fylgis sem flokkurinn fékk í kosningunum árið 2015. Fylgistapið hefur lengst af verið rakið til þess að danskir sósíaldemókratar hafa tekið upp ýmis stefnumál DF í málefnum innflytjenda og hælisleitenda, nokkuð sem hefur mælst misvel fyrir, en þó orðið til þess að auka fylgi flokksins. Síðan hafa tveir flokkar verið stofnaðir sem teljast vera enn róttækari í málefnum útlendinga, og harðlínumenn sem hafa hingað til kosið DF hafa lýst yfir stuðningi sínum við þessa flokka. Bogi Ágústsson fór yfir stöðuna í Danmörku í Heimsglugganum í dag, hann ræddi stöðu Theresu May, forsætisráðherra Bretlands, sem nú hefur gefið í skyn að hún kunni að leggja sama Brexit-samninginn fyrir þingið og felldur hefur verið í þrígang.

He’s worked with literally everyone in the business from Mary J Blige to Miles Davies and he’s got all the stories you’d expect from a guy who’s been around a block that fancy. Alain de Botton discusses his first novel in twenty years. The Course of Love centres on the story of a couple called Rabih and Kirsten who meet, fall in love, and get married. The philosopher, author and presenter tells John why he wanted to explore the later chapters of a relationship, and why he has taken such a long break from fiction. The Hungarian feature film Son of Saul closely follows one inmate of the Auschwitz concentration camp who is a member of the Sonderkommando, responsible for disposing of the bodies of the victims murdered in the gas chambers. Jason Solomons reviews the film that won the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film this year, as well as the Grand Prix at Cannes. Playwright Nick Payne and director Josie Rourke discuss the inspiration behind Elegy, a new play set in a world where medical advances mean that life can be extended at the expense of our memories. With Miles Ahead, starring Don Cheadle as jazz master Miles Davies, currently in our cinemas, and film depictions of Nina Simone and Chet Baker on the way; the music journalist and self-professed jazzhead, Kevin Le Gendre explores the challenges of the jazz movie.Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Ella-mai RobeyMain image: Alain de Botton Image credit: Vincent Starr.

As part of the British music season on Radio 3, poets from across the UK reveal their favourite music. Sean O'Brien is a perfect choice for Private Passions because his poems capture the musical soundscapes of the north-east of England where he lives: the cries of gulls, the wash of the sea, the rumble of trains. In fact he's obsessed by trains, and for O'Brien, like many other poets, journeys by train are an inspiration and a form of meditation. So one of his choices is Steve Reich's hypnotic work Different Trains, in which the composer mixes fragments of train whistles and announcements. Sean O'Brien's other choices include Little Feat, Schubert, Vaughan Williams, Debussy's La Mer, and Prokofiev's film music for Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky, a film he first saw when skiving off games as a 16-year-old. He used to be a drummer in a rock band and likes to listen to everything very loud, so Miles Davies is the perfect soundtrack to Sunday mornings ... Michael Berkeley's guest Sean O'Brien reveals his Private Passions.

This week Sue Lawley's castaway is one of France's best known exports - the singer Sacha Distel. Born into a loving family in 1930s Paris, his father was a Russian émigré who'd fled the Red Army in 1917 and walked to Paris where he eventually set up an electrical goods shop. His mother was a talented musician and she instilled a love of music in her son at a young age - especially the piano. The family was traumatised during the Second World War, when his mother, who was Jewish, was interred in a Nazi camp for 19 months. After the war they were reunited but Sacha has said the experience left him with a long lasting sense of insecurity. He continued playing the piano but was increasingly drawn to the guitar, encouraged by the uncle who was the successful jazz band leader Ray Ventura. He soon demonstrated enormous talent for the instrument and, after graduating from college, he was playing with the likes of Lionel Hampton, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davies. However it was his affair and engagement to Brigitte Bardot which catapaulted him to international fame. The liaison failed but he was to go on to become a household name, both in here and in France, with his distinct vocal style and image as a sex symbol. Now about to turn 71, Sacha is still touring and has just released a new CD.
