NLP at the DNC next week y'all!! Tune in Monday through Thursday on YouTube, we'll be live streaming every day from the Democratic National Convention.    This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum discuss the latest bizarre (weird) attacks launched at VP Harris by Trump and his campaign, and offer some strategic advice on how to handle such attacks. One big question: should she be doing more interviews and press conferences?   While they're supporting her now, not all Dems have been with Kamala since the get. Angela has the receipts on which high-ranking Democrats pushed back against Kamala's nomination, and why.    Meanwhile, the interim president at FAMU has unceremoniously fired much of the university's leadership a week before school starts. This interim president was hired by appointees of Governor Ron DeSantis, raising questions about the motive behind the firings.    And of course we'll hear from you, our #NLPFam listeners. This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum discuss Kamala's VP pick: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. What does his selection bring to the ticket, some white privilege maybe? Maybe more—Coach certainly got the gibes and clapbacks; recently he is the architect of the  “weird” strategy to redefine MAGA Republicans.    In foreign affairs, things are heating up between Israel and Iran with the United States caught in the middle. Tiffany and Andrew weigh how a new war in the Middle East could affect this election cycle.    Speaking of Israel, we just AIPAC spend millions of dollars to push out yet another progressive, Cori Bush.  She lost her primary race to a Black Democrat who pledged not to run against her. Funny what money does!    Lastly, the hosts weigh in on the Republican election denialism movement. MAGA Republicans have been altering the rules of local elections to make it easier to dispute and withhold the results. The case calls into question the “wisdom” of our current Attorney General and puts a spotlight on an issue too many of us are familiar with: the criminalization of addiction.     This week Tiffany Cross has just come back from Côte d'Ivoire with stories and insights to share with co-hosts, Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum. Tiffany's trip made her think: are Black folks in the states always checking what they're saying, doing—even WEARING—to cater to white folks?    The Supreme Court will make decisions on a number of consequential cases this summer, including access to abortion pills, regulation of social media sites, and whether Trump is immune from prosecution for crimes committed in office. Should Biden issue a pardon to Donald Trump for his federal crimes? Will that help with America's standing or do we have 99 OTHER problems and Trump ain't one?! There have been some Republicans and Democrats calling for a preemptive Trump pardon. Is this kind of grace-giving exactly what's wrong with the Democratic Party?     Also, can Trump vote now that he's been convicted? In Florida, where Trump lives, folks with felonies have limited voting rights and Trump does not qualify. BUT Florida's Governor, Ron DeSantis, has signaled that he'll bend (READ: Break!) the law to allow Trump to vote. The hosts also take a look at voting after conviction more broadly and the stigma that follows returning citizens even after they've served their time.      The hosts also dissect a viral video of a man who faced incarceration after driving with a suspended license…hilarious as it may seem, there's more to this video that mainstream media missed.   And of course we'll hear from you, our #NLPFam—keep sending in your questions and comments on IG @nativelandpod.    We are 152 days away from the election. Our prayers are with the families of those with loved ones in Rafah, but most importantly our calls to action are too. Where do we go from here, y'all? This week hosts Andrew Gillum, Angela Rye, and Tiffany Cross ask how many red lines have to be crossed before the Biden Administration takes meaningful action.    Speaking of Biden, there's growing panic within the Democratic Party over increasing signs that the President is STRUGGLING to gain a lead in the 2024 election over white-supremacist and would-be-tyrant Donald Trump. The hosts look at the “signs” and debate the usefulness of election polling.      And in this week's deep dive, the hosts respond to listener questions about folks in the community who question voting for Biden and who his base really is. We know y'all are struggling with this year's presidential election and the feeling that folks have to choose between “the lesser of two evils”. The hosts navigate this struggle for themselves—IN REAL TIME—and offer some tips on how to talk to friends and family about it.    Gaza has been in the news a lot lately, including some truly horrific videos that have been coming from Rafah this last week. Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue his assault on the city despite the civilian casualties and increasing condemnation from the international community. So, what are we going to do about it?? Welcome home!  Hosts Andrew Gillum, Tiffany Cross, and Angela Rye kick off this week's episode with a look at Trump's many many many federal and state charges (88 to be exact). You might've heard that Trump got out of paying a whole bunch of money to New York state this week— nearly half a billion dollars— the penalty for committing fraud by over-valuing his properties. He will still have to pay a $175 million bond, and New York State's Attorney General Letitia James may seize his properties if he doesn't cough it up.  From New York, the hosts take us across the country to cover the Republican anti-DEI offensive. More than half of states have introduced bills to limit diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The hosts take a look at these bills and the arguments folks are making for and against them. Why do some Black folks side with Republicans on this issue? What does it mean to be “equitable” and “inclusive,” anyway?  Finally, it's time to talk about Haiti. Welcome home!  This week, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross start the show with a look at Trump's recent “bloodbath” debacle.  Trump's violent language on the campaign trail is nothing new, so how concerned should we be about political violence? What are the lasting effects of promoting violence as a political strategy? Is it “terrorism”??  Plus, you remember the First Step Act, that bipartisan criminal justice reform bill passed by the 115th Congress and signed into law by Donald Trump in 2018 that Republicans were patting themselves on the back for? You might have missed it in the mainstream news, but the ultra conservative Supreme Court just struck down a key part of the bill and the Justice who drafted the majority opinion MIGHT surprise you! The hosts dig into the SCOTUS ruling for this week's deep dive.  Are you HIGH? Or feeling low because Mary Jane is still a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substance ACT? Well, MVP Harris has some thoughts on it. If you're in Baltimore, support Marilyn Mosby by showing up to her rally. It's at noon this Saturday March 23rd at the Druid Hill YMCA and this is just... the first step.  And since we know so many of you listen just for Tiffany's sports analysis, she'll be back to break down March Madness in this week's Politics Are Everywhere. The ACLU says the legislation violates the first amendment, Donald Trump is wavering, even though he was actually the first high ranking official to propose a ban on TikTok. Joe Biden said he'd sign the bill into law. The hosts offer their takes.  In election politics, no surprises— Trump and Biden officially clinched the nomination. The hosts do a deep dive into what a Trump versus a Biden presidency would look like by examining each of their proposed budgets as President Biden just dropped his off to Congress on Tuesday!  There's also an update on Trump's racketeering case in Georgia. That case could be affected by an impending Supreme Court Case that will decide if Trump enjoys broad “presidential” immunity for crimes committed while he was president. More on that in this and a later episode…  Finally, the hosts will answer your questions, and give an update on the former State's Attorney, Marilyn Mosby. She grew up between Chicago and the Bahamas and both studied theater and politics and got her Master's in Journalism from New York University. That's where she discovered her love for audio."Television is my jam," she tells Shondaland. "Yes, and I love telling stories with sound."When she was a fledgling producer, it coincided with the heyday of Scandal, which Collins says was an escape between long days of writing and reporting."I was working at ABC News and New York Public Radio at the same time," she says, "so I had to drum up some non-stop Olivia Pope energy. And sometimes Cyrus [laughs]. I can actually timestamp my journey as a producer with Shondaland moments: The Greys' plane crash episode aired days before I flew to London (to finish up my capstone at Oriel). Viola Davis as Annalise in HTGAWM took off that wig around the time I struggled with how to bring my whole self to work. I can keep going. But above all, these moments, and the teams that made them of course, renewed the power of drama and storytelling for me.
