The story of the Indian National Movement is often told from the accounts of great leaders like Gandhi, Nehru or Patel. However, India's freedom struggle was a great cause that had attracted many young and bright minds of India at the time—Sarojini Naidu, Asaf Ali, Syed Hossain, and friends. The shared cause built many friendships—some survived the test of time, some did not; but their personal exchanges draw a vivid picture of the freedom struggle. We discuss:* Introducing the circle of friends* Sarojini, the Boss-woman* Asaf Ali and friends' thoughts on Nationalism* The importance of Khilafat movement for elite muslims* Mass movements and communal tensions* Moderates to Radicals* Was separate electorate the original sin?* What did the friends think about a separate nation?* Opposing ideas of the national movement* Ideas about Pakistan* The impact of partition* Aruna and Asaf Ali's marriagePuliyabaazi is now available on Youtube with video.Read:Circles Of Freedom :Friendship, Love And Loyalty in the Indian National Struggle by T.C.A. Generative AI is a data-driven story with significant infrastructure and operational implications, particularly around the rising demand for GPUs, which are better suited for AI workloads than CPUs. In an episode ofThe New Stack Makersrecorded at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America, Sudha Raghavan, SVP for Developer Platform at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, discussed how AI's rapid adoption has reshaped infrastructure needs. The release of ChatGPT triggered a surge in GPU demand, with organizations requiring GPUs for tasks ranging from testing workloads to training large language models across massive GPU clusters. These workloads run continuously at peak power, posing challenges such as high hardware failure rates and energy consumption.Oracle is addressing these issues by building GPU superclusters and enhancing Kubernetes functionality. Tools like Oracle's Node Manager simplify interactions between Kubernetes and GPUs, providing tailored observability while maintaining Kubernetes' user-friendly experience. Raghavan emphasized the importance of stateful job management and infrastructure innovations to meet the demands of modern AI workloads.Learn more from The New Stack about how Oracle is addressing the GPU demand for AI workloads with its GPU superclusters and enhancing Kubernetes functionality: Oracle Code Assist, Java-Optimized, Now in BetaOracle's Code Assist: Fashionably Late to the GenAI PartyOracle Unveils Java 23: Simplicity Meets Enterprise PowerJoin our community of newsletter subscribers to stay on top of the news and at the top of your game.

Hema talks about how running GNNs on GPUs has led to breakthroughs in performance as well as the query language Kumo developed to help companies predict future data points. Although approachable for non-technical users, the product provides full control for data scientists who use Kumo to automate time-consuming feature engineering pipelines. Mentioned in this episode: Graph Neural Networks: Learning mechanism for data in graph format, the basis of the Kumo product Graph RAG: Popular extension of retrieval-augmented generation using GNNs LiGNN: Graph Neural Networks at LinkedIn paper KDD: Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Conference Hosted by: Konstantine Buhler and Sonya Huang, Sequoia Capital
“There is one AAA bond that has taken a loss so far in CMBS. There will be plenty more.” Waterfall Asset Management's Head of ABS Strategy Keerthi Raghavan didn't mince words in laying out his view of the office real estate market, one of the few corners of the credit universe offering significant distressed opportunities. Raghavan, speaking with Bloomberg Intelligence's Noel Hebert and Phil Brendel, examined the widely different segments of the commercial real estate market, his data-centric approach to investing and strategies employed amid distressed situations (5:50). Prior to that, Hebert and Brendel highlighted the risks investors take when the market speculation is high, evidenced by historically tight spreads and a dearth of distressed debt. The podcast concludes with BI's Negisa Balluku joining the two analysts for a round table discussion covering Ligado Networks, Serta Simmons, Party City, Hertz, Incora, and CommScope(1:25:40).
On this episode of Special Sauce we pay tribute to the great author, chef and cooking teacher Raghavan Iyer. He introduced much of America to the joys of cooking and eating Indian food. We talked to Raghavan last in March of 2023 about his life, his work, and the last book he ever wrote, "On The Curry Trail". Raghavan talked openly and movingly about his terminal Stage 4 cancer diagnosis and the work he was doing on healing comfort food. His voice occasionally wavered -- you could hear the pain in it -- but he was clear-headed and just as articulate as ever. Raghavan had so much to say, we devoted two episodes to his story, which we have condensed into one. Tragically, he died just as the two episodes dropped. So give a listen to the wit and wisdom of Raghavan Iyer.

On March 25th, 1971, President Yahya Khan launches Operation Searchlight in East Pakistan, a brutal military crackdown intended to snuff out Bengali separatism and restore West Pakistani authority. Meanwhile, an American diplomat in Dacca named Archer Blood begins reporting and documenting the slaughter, hoping to convince his government to step in and restrain Yahya. In Washington, D.C., President Richard Nixon and his national security advisor Henry Kissinger weigh the political costs of intervening in the atrocities, while secretly planning a groundbreaking outreach to Communist China.
