We meet our next guest, Kalen chase, at a little Marriott in Nashville. It's our first day in Nashville and of course we're hoping to meet a rockstar and in walks Kalen. He's got that rockstar look going today with his long jacket, glasses, and his great white hair he's quite the look with his Albanestic glow. At a young age his parents move the family and his two brothers to Northeast Washington, where he grew up doing the country life thing and ultimately headed back to LA himself at the age of 18 to go to school to study music. It's a really great story of his career and life which ultimately led him to singing for the band Korn for a few years and how recently the passing of two friends has brought him back. He's on a mission to do music of his own right now, and writing the songs and putting the album together. It's a great story and he's a really interesting character and you're certain to enjoy it. Note: For fall break, the McKays are attempting their first familial backpacking trip. Kate and I have been before, but we've never brought the kids, so this will be fun. While we're out of touch, please enjoy this rebroadcast with Gary Collins about going off the grid for a much longer period of time. Gary unfortunately passed away this fall, but he left a lot of great tips on simplifying your life in this episode. Many dream of leaving the city and all its tethers and obligations and creating a simpler, more independent life farther from the mainstream population and entirely off the grid. But how do you go from that daydream to making such a move a reality? My guest walks us through the process today. His name is Gary Collins, he made the leap himself and now lives off the grid in Northeast Washington, and he's the author of several books on off grid living as well as simplifying your life. We begin our conversation today with why Gary decided to leave his conventional, urban, 9-5 existence to find a freer lifestyle, and how he defines being off the grid. We then get into why Gary thinks you should make the move to living off the grid in a series of steps, the first of which is to simplify your existing life in three main ways. Gary then makes the case for why living in a RV should be the next step in your journey, before discussing the process of finding land for your off grid home, and the factors to consider in picking a locale. From there we get into how those who live off the grid take care of water, sewage, power, and internet, how they construct the house itself, and what to know about the start-up costs involved. We end our conversation with a discussion of getting off the grid in a more metaphorical way by quitting social media, and why Gary thinks you should pull the plug on those platforms, even if you're an entrepreneur. If reading this in an email, click the title of the post to listen to the show.Resources/People/Articles Mentioned in PodcastGary's booksHow to Survive a Grid-Down DisasterHow to Bug-InA Survival Expert's Guide to Bugging-In5 Books to Get the Personal Finance Education You Never HadA Place for Everything and Everything In Its PlaceHow to Get Started CompostingZillow.com4 Lessons From a 4-Week Social Media FastBecoming a Digital MinimalistUtopia is CreepyTheSimpleLifeNow.comListen to the Podcast! The property destruction led to national outcry and support for a Catholic school celebrating its 100th year this fall. Saint Anthony's principal of 12 years, Michael Thomasian, believes the incident was a hate crime targeted at the school's Catholic witness. The school serves grades Pre-K-8 in the Brookland neighborhood. The incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department said, in which 32-year-old Demitrius Hansford of Northeast Washington vandalized the school's Saint Anthony of Padua statue, stole $1,400 in cash, and trampled areas on the property in two incidents, on August 10 and August 15. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252067/man-arrested-for-burglary-property-destruction-at-catholic-school-in-dc Bishop Joseph Brennan of Fresno joined the United Farm Workers last week for a portion of the union's march through California's Central Valley to support a union voting rights bill. The more than 300-mile march from Delano to Sacramento is in support of Assembly Bill 2183, the Agricultural Labor Relations Voting Choice Act. The bill would allow farmworkers to use mail-in ballots for union elections. The march passed through Fresno August 11. Bishop Brennan, along with his predecessor, Bishop Armando Ochoa, joined the march at Saint Anthony Mary Claret Church, and then spoke at a rally at Calwa Recreation & Park District, where Bishop Brennan also gave a blessing to the marchers. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252068/fresno-bishop-joins-march-for-farmworkers-union-voting-rights-bill Today, the Church celebrates Saint John Eudes, a French missionary and the founder of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity, who was also the author of the liturgical worship of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In 1641 he founded the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge, to provide a refuge for prostitutes. In 1643 he founded the Society of Jesus and Mary for the education of priests and for missionary work. He wrote the first book ever on the devotion to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-john-eudes-568
“A U.S. District Court jury yesterday convicted three men of operating a criminal enterprise that used murder and intimidation to control drug sales in a Northeast Washington neighborhood. Two other defendants, who prosecutors said also were members of the R Street Crew, were convicted of drug conspiracy and other charges. The case, which took five months to try, has been watched by federal prosecutors and defense lawyers across the country because it was one of a few attempts, and the first in the District, to use sophisticated anti-racketeering laws against a suspected street drug gang. Although the jurors acquitted all defendants of racketeering, defense lawyers said the prosecutors' strategy of using the law made it easier to include other crimes, such as murder, in the case and thus made their defense problems far more complex. As a practical matter, the racketeering acquittals had little effect because the jury voted to convict on the more serious offense of operating a continuing criminal enterprise. "Today's verdict is a tremendous victory for the people of the District of Columbia," said U.S. Attorney Jay B. Stephens. "It demonstrates our unrelenting commitment to use the full arsenal of laws available to us to bring to justice drug kingpins who are responsible for much of the human devastation affecting this community." From the start of the trial, prosecutors portrayed the R Street defendants as high-rolling drug dealers who built an organization complete with enforcers, drug processors, distributors, lieutenants and street runners. The organization operated between 1983 and 1991, conducting much of its business near the corner of Lincoln Road and R Street NE. Various witnesses described lavish spending sprees on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, Calif., high-speed chases in Mercedes-Benz sedans, three killings and an unsuccessful drive-by shooting attack on convicted drug kingpin Rayful Edmond III.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support
