In the outdoor and environmental space, conservation is at the heart of so many discussions, but how those stories are told can make a difference. Whether it's connecting policy to personal experiences or framing climate change through the lens of recreation, good storytelling has the power to inspire action.Joining me today is journalist and poet Sage Marshall. Sage has built a career covering outdoor recreation and conservation, with a focus on hunting and fishing media. In this episode, we'll explore what makes a conservation story compelling, how to find and develop relatable figures, and the role that place and personal experience play in shaping narratives. Plus, we'll discuss how storytelling in outdoor media is evolving and what the future might hold for conservation journalism.Sage Marshall is a poet, essayist, and outdoors journalist from southwest Colorado. He has lived across the U.S. and currently resides in Western Montana, where he explores the rivers and mountains around Missoula with his partner Bela and their adopted bird dog Gunney. He's a student of many outdoor pursuits, from skiing and backpacking to fly fishing and duck hunting. Marshall is a contributing writer and former editor of Field & Stream. His creative work has been featured in publications such as The Missouri Review, Sport Literate, swamp pink, and elsewhere. Echolocation (Middle Creek Publishing), which weaves the landscapes and ecologies of the American West against themes of violence, adolescence, and beauty, is his debut poetry collection. Starlight Thursdays Episode 199. Welcome SPACE CHUNK to the series! He's been behind the booth for the past 9 years. You may have had the pleasure of hearing him play at Forest Creatures 6, a few open decks and house parties around Bozeman. Let's take a closer look into the world of SPACE CHUNK Why did you get into it? Growing up in Minneapolis I was a midwest hip hop head and was introduced to the turntablist/beats side of DJing. Artists like DJ Abilities and Ant were big inspirations with a focus on sample based mixing and scratching on top of drum loops. When I moved to Bozeman in 2013 I got introduced to bass music by taking road trips up to Missoula to see a show and then driving back to Bozeman before class started the next day. At the time we really didn't know what we were doing but we were seeing these insane artists like Excision, Pretty Lights, Zeds Dead, and Odesza in venues like the Wilma and Tophat. After one of those shows I remember my friends and I downloading a cracked version of Ableton and started making mix tapes as a way to share music. Learning the basics of Ableton opened the door to producing and I eventually got into making my own tracks. Following those artists we saw at the Wilma; I ended up attending Shambhala 2015 for my first camping music festival, which gave me an introduction to festival culture and dance focused DJing. After my first Shambhala I bought my first DJ controller and ever since then DJing and producing have been my main creative outlets. What inspires you about electronic music? From an artistic standpoint I love the act of combining sounds to make something new. Like a classic liquid track might make me feel nostalgic and a modern tech-step track might make me feel groovy. What happens when I play them back to back, or double drop them together? I might end up with some new sound more complex than either song by itself. I think every sound has the ability to trigger a memory or idea, and I really try to lean into that when mixing songs together. What inspires you about electronic music culture? I love the insane amount of effort and creativity that goes into every event. From the organizers to the attendees, everyone is always giving it 100%. Also the culture of extreme acceptance is awesome. Tell us about your mix?   I start it off with my newest original remix, and then dive into a compilation of the floatiest DnB songs I've been able to find over the last year or so. I have a process where I'll freestyle a quick mix and then listen to the mix on a bike, ski, or drive making note on what tracks and combos fit the vibe of what I'm doing. This mix is sort of the "best of" from all those mixes and is my best interpretation of road tripping and recreating around Western Montana. Lots of funk, soul, and hip hop influence, with a backbone of DnB rollers and deep bass. Inspired by Diesel Boy, DownLink, and Alan Flava. Physically and metaphorically Robin and Julia Rogers put their minds, hearts and hands together to create sculptural works in glass – their chosen material because of its inherent qualities of luminosity, viscosity, and seductive flow. Their inspiration is drawn from the natural world, personal experience, family life, music, psychology, and science. Robin and Julia state: “Complex and mystifying, the human mind drives us, but the subtle inner workings remain, to certain extent, unknown. Delving into the psyche, our work explores the human mind to reveal a metaphorical interior of ideas, emotions, and mystery. Floating in the vast sea of our own thought we are alone. This solitude, both deeply haunting and beautiful, is ours to contemplate, conquer, and call our own. Our minds never stop imagining the possibilities of what can be explored, discovered, shared, and executed.” In their series, Architecture of the Mind, heads are turned into buildings whose history and occupancy is contemplated. Each building has its own unique story, a background different from the one living next door. Community is formed, despite the differences, allowing life to thrive in this modern, fast-paced world. Thoughts from day-to-day life, memories, or even multiple personalities are reflected in these works. Animalia is also a driving and important theme in the narrative of the Rogers' work. Since the advent of human expression, animals have been ever present. The artists feel that animals have a certain wisdom and intuition that brings alignment with the natural world. There is something to be learned from the animal spirit; especially in today's fast paced digital life where it is easy to forget that we, ourselves, are inseparable from nature. Human Hybrids (Bioengineered) is a series of anthropomorphic humans, where animal and human DNA have been melded together. Imagine the possibilities of a not- so-distant future, where rapid breakthroughs in genetic research, advances in molecular biology, and new reproductive technologies, allow scientists to manipulate human DNA at the gene level to cure inheritable diseases. In this plausible future, parents can choose which of their own genes to share with their children and which to omit. One can even imagine how animal genes could be introduced to give heightened senses and new abilities to these superhuman species.  Discovering how to translate their ideas into glass can be both challenging and rewarding. After scale drawings are made, Robin and Julia decide who will make which parts of the sculpture and hot work begins. Once all the parts are made, they work with a skilled team of assistants for the final assembly. The finished glass is often combined with other materials such as fur, wood, and steel to complete the sculpture. Currently, Robin and Julia both work at the Chrysler Museum of Art, where Robin is the Glass Studio Program Director and Julia is the Higher Education and Outreach Coordinator. They met in a small hot glass studio in Western Montana in 2001 at a glass shop called Cloud Cap Glass. As their friendship grew, their glass practices began to overlap. They both became part owners of the studio and worked together, operating the small business and creating glass works. In pursuit of Master of Fine Art degrees, the couple decided to leave their beloved Montana in 2005. They re-envisioned their glass studio and created a trailer-mounted portable shop. With their tools, dogs and one-year-old son, they set out for Southern Illinois. Following professional opportunities, the glassy family has lived in Carbondale, Illinois; Bowling Green, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; and Norfolk, Virginia. In 2010, after nearly 10 years of working together and assisting with each other's work, the duo decided to start creating artwork collaboratively. In these bodies of work, every step of the process, from conception to installing, is completed by both artists. This method of working has led to the creation of artwork that Julia and Robin are excited to make and proud to exhibit. Through the synergy of this collaboration, the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts.  The couple is currently working on new pieces to be shown in the Habatat International Exhibition in April 2024 at Habatat Gallery in Michigan. They are also starting a collaboration with Fabiano Zanchi, teaching at UrbanGlass in June, and will be the featured artists at the International Glass Symposium in Novy Bor, Czechia in October. Additionally, the studio at the Chrysler Museum of Art, where they make most of their work, is currently tripling in size. Phase 1 of the project ends in May 2024 and phase 2 will be completed by the end of 2024.

Whisper Camel-Means shares her expertise on the pressing need to protect US wildlife ecosystems, now imperiled at an alarming rate. She offers an Indigenous perspective on the human-induced threats to our living relatives, from habitat loss to climate change. Tune in to learn how we can restore habitats, ensure the survival of endangered species, and honor the profound connection between Indigenous peoples and nature. As of February 2023, the Center for Biological Diversity stated that 40% of U.S. wildlife and ecosystems are imperiled. A new report on the status of U.S. wildlife conservation revealed that 40% of animals, 34% of plants and 40% of ecosystems nationwide are at risk. Indigenous peoples have always understood our interdependence with Nature, with flora and fauna and our rightful place as a mere part of the whole, living ecosystem. Our discussion today is on Indigenous Stewardship with Whisper Camel-Means, wildlife biologist and enrolled member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation [https://csktribes.org/] in Western Montana. In short order, Western society has decimated much of life on this planet. Conservation scientist David Wilcove estimates that there are 14,000 to 35,000 endangered species of flora and fauna in the United States alone; or roughly 7 to 18 percent of U.S. flora and fauna. Today wildlife on Turtle Island face multiple threats including: habitat loss, climate change, disease, pollution, invasive species and exploitation, the majority of which is human-induced. How might we change our behaviors to create healthy, balanced ecosystems in which all our living relatives can thrive and prosper in their sacred and unique ways? What do we owe to the Deer, the Elk, the Moose, the Black Bear, the Grizzly Bear, Otter, Wolverine, Bat, Turtle, Bison, Peregrine Falcon, Bighorn Sheep, Trumpeter Swan and the Gray Wolf to name only a precious few? How can we help restore the habitats and species who face extinction and ensure their presence for future generations? Join Indigenous wildlife biologist Whisper Camel-Means as she shares about her life as a wildlife biologist and how we might protect wildlife for generations to come. Despite his advanced studies in Scripture, it wasn't until Victor Cancino, S.J., became the resident pastor at St. Ignatius Mission on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Western Montana that he properly grasped the Bible's deep connections with Native American spirituality and practices. “The Bible is from a tribal world with a spirituality that is as old as the people that I'm living with,” Victor says. “We completely forget that and we think of this Roman-Greco society that looks like us, but the Bible looks a lot like tribal people.” On “Preach,” Victor delivers a homily for the Second Sunday of Advent, Year B, focusing on the image of the desert presented in the first reading from Isaiah. In the conversation that follows the homily, host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., and Victor explore how the preacher might respond to generational trauma in marginalized communities, such as the people he works with on the reservation. A lot of my work these days revolves around communicating with farmers around Europe who are at various stages of a transition towards regenerative management. For many different reasons farmers are looking for solutions outside of the conventional industry of chemical and technological manipulations and are rediscovering the potential of partnering with natural cycles and processes. Though there are a handful of examples of growers who've been pioneering these practices around the continent, the vast majority are fairly early in their journeys. It's still rare to find an experienced commercial grower who has found success through organic, no-till, low input systems.  Luckily there are a few who have shown that this is possible and are sharing their knowledge and experience and I'm thrilled to feature one of them in this session. Helen Atthowe has worked for 35 years to connect farming, food systems, land stewardship, and conservation. She currently farms and does soil- and natural enemies' habitat- building research on her new 5-acre farm in Western Montana. Helen has an M.S. in Horticulture from Rutgers University and even studied with renowned Japanese farmer Masanobu Fukuoka. She has worked in education and research at Rutgers, the University of Arkansas, and Oregon State University and was a Horticulture Extension Agent in Montana for 17 years. Helen was a board member for the Organic Farming Research Foundation 2000-2005 and advisor for Wild Farm Alliance in 2018 & 2019.  She first owned and operated a 30 acre certified organic vegetable/fruit farm in Montana and later co-owned with her late husband a 26 acre certified organic orchard in California. Together they then moved to a 211 acre organic farm in Eastern Oregon doing mainly orchard and vegetable production. The two of them also created educational videos on their YouTube channel called Agrarian Dreams, and did video presentations about their ecological farming methods. She is the author of “The Ecological Farm: A Minimalist No-Till, No-Spray, Selective-Weeding, Grow-Your-Own-Fertilizer System for Organic Agriculture”. And that is exactly what we'll be focusing on in our interview today. As a reflection of many of the discussions happening within the Climate Farmer's community at the moment, Helen and I really dug into the unique goals she and her husband had during their farming careers and how they gauged their success. We talk about the way they measured progress on their journey towards a healthy yet low input system for both their orchard and vegetable crops as well the routines and practices that brought them the best results. Much more than just the knowledge and practices of her farming experience, Helen brings a remarkable mindset of constant learning and experimentation to this conversation that is now informing her new 5 acre project in Montana. We also cover the most important learnings that she has gained through her career and how it informs the establishment of all her new research.

Helen Atthow is an author and farmer who has worked on developing systems that focus on ecological health by utilizing living mulches and minimal tillage. She is passionate about using the natural nutrient cycles present in ecosystems to reduce system inputs. Her research and experience have shown how focusing on the system can impact weed, disease, and pest management.  She and her late husband, Carl Rosato, co-owned and operated a certified organic orchard in California, where they pioneered methods for raising apples, peaches, and other crops to replace the need for pesticides. She also farmed and conducted additional research at Wood Leaf Farm in Eastern Oregon until early 2023. Now living in Western Montana, she is starting a new farm where she has planted a no-till orchard. Atthowe has a master's degree in horticulture from Rutgers University and has worked in education and research at many other institutions. In this conversation, John and Helen discuss: No-till living mulch systems in orchards Managing ecological systems with residues Strategies for disease and pest management  Minimizing inputs and maintaining yields Mowing management and the importance of timing Thinning and pruning practices Vole management outcomes Selective strip-till system in vegetable production  Click here to check out Helen's new book, The Ecological Farm About John Kempf John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA). A top expert in biological and regenerative farming, John founded AEA in 2006 to help fellow farmers by providing the education, tools, and strategies that will have a global effect on the food supply and those who grow it. Through intense study and the knowledge gleaned from many industry leaders, John is building a comprehensive systems-based approach to plant nutrition – a system solidly based on the sciences of plant physiology, mineral nutrition, and soil microbiology.  Support For This Show & Helping You GrowSince 2006, AEA has been on a mission to help growers become more resilient, efficient, and profitable with regenerative agriculture.  AEA works directly with growers to apply its unique line of liquid mineral crop nutrition products and biological inoculants. Informed by cutting-edge plant and soil data-gathering techniques, AEA's science-based programs empower farm operations to meet the crop quality markers that matter the most.   AEA has created real and lasting change on millions of acres with its products and data-driven services by working hand-in-hand with growers to produce healthier soil, stronger crops, and higher profits.  Beyond working on the ground with growers, AEA leads in regenerative agriculture media and education, producing and distributing the popular and highly-regarded Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, inspiring webinars, and other educational content that serve as go-to resources for growers worldwide.  Learn more about AEA's regenerative programs and products.  ~  VIDEO: To learn more from John Kempf about regenerative agriculture, watch this conversation between John and three AEA grower partners about how regenerative agriculture is changing lives and conventional farming: https://youtu.be/n9U6GwbYPDk

#119:  Longtime farmer, gardener, and researcher Helen Atthowe joins Dave to discuss the findings that led to her new book: "The Ecological Farm: A Minimalist No-Till, So-Spray, Selective-Weeding, Grow-Your-Own-Fertilizer System for Organic Agriculture." By focusing on creating habitat plantings for beneficial insects, Helen learned how to implement living mulches, re-seeding cover crops, and organic no till practices.  Helen Atthowe now farms in Western Montana where she focuses on  building beneficial insect habitat. For many years she farmed organiclly on 211 acres in Eastern Oregon with her late husband and created eductaional videos that can be seen here:https://www.youtube.com/user/AgrarianDreams/videosHer book “The Ecological Farm: A Minimalist No-Till, No-Spray, Selective-Weeding, Grow-Your-Own-Fertilizer System for Organic Agriculture” is set to be released on June 22, 2023:https://www.amazon.com/Ecological-Farm-Selective-Weeding-Grow-Your-Own-Fertilizer-Agriculture/dp/1645021815To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/helen-atthowe-no-till-no-spray-ecological-farming-episode-one-hundred-nineteenThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

Come March, a gathering of Missoula-based fishing guides resembles a scene from "Night of the Living Dead". Montana winters can grind a guide down, but Jason Brininstool has managed to keep a smile on his face. Jason flees for the tropics to work as a PADI Scuba Instructor or hosts trip to far flung destinations like Cuba and Columbia. Jason's positive attitude has attracted a cadre of loyal clients who trust him with adventures far beyond the rivers of Western Montana. This has made his off-season all the more interesting and one particular foray to Xcalak, Mexico formed a forever-memory and serves as a reminder to never judge a guide by their boat.
