In this episode: .The FAQ is: How can I travel solo for the first time? Today's Destination Thousand Oaks California   Today's Mistake- Too tired when you get home from a trip and can't find your parking ticket or keys Travel Advice:   Safety After Dark   In this episode: FAQ How can I travel solo for the first time? Answer: The first step for traveling solo for the first time is to pick a small destination such as one night in the next state. don't bite off too much because it might be too challenging and you want to be successful.  Plan a 1 Night trip to another town or state and return home the next day to see how you like it. prepare yourself with things to do by yourself, such as going to a movie, shopping, and sleeping well for the night when you wake up in the morning.  then drive home. You will have had your first successful solo trip, which was okay. The next step will be a little more challenging, but you will get there if you try and follow the directions I give you in my travel book, 5 steps to solo travel. Destination:  Thousand Oaks, California I took a solo trip to Malibu and Thousand Oaks, California, for a weekend. There are about a hundred twenty-five thousand residents and 10,000 businesses here in Thousand Oaks, which has existed since the Chumash Indians founded it.  There's a lot to do in the coastal area of California north of Los Angeles. I recommend this kind of Step One travel for those who have never traveled by themselves. Gardens of the World is a destination to enjoy in Thousand Oaks, California. Gardens of the World is open from Tuesday through Saturday only. it smells great With all these beautiful flowers, gardens, and fresh air here. The drive between Thousand Oaks and Malibu is beautiful. I hope you can take that tour across the top of the mountain, horse farms, wineries, and one-of-a-kind homes. .Windy roads, viewpoints, canyons,  spectacular vistas, and even some forest fire damage along the drive from past years fires. The Lakes shopping Mall, City Hall, Plaza, and Park are nearby. Thousand Oaks is a small city. I really wanted to visit the Ojai Valley Inn, but they said I needed a reservation. I ended up at the America's Best Value Inn. .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTicw7aoVS0 Nearby beaches include Topanga, Dan Blocker, Point Dume, Niklas Canyon I need to get back here my favorite beaches were El Matador Beach and Zuma Beach in Malibu, Today's Mistake: Too tired when you get home from a trip and can't find your parking ticket or keys. When you return from a long overseas trip, you may be very tired. you may not be able to find your car parking tickets, keys, or both. This happened to my sister on her return from a long European getaway. The lesson learned is keeping your keys and parking ticket in a convenient and memorable location. Before you set on your trip home, have them handy so you will not have to remember where they are. That will save you much stress when you are jet-lagged and tired, and your brain just doesn't want to work. Today's Travel Advice:  Safety After Dark If you are walking around after dark by yourself, do not use earbuds and listen to podcasts or music. Keep your ears, eyes, and all senses aware of your surroundings. Do not drink alcohol or take drugs. Do not walk in dark alleys. Know where you're going ahead of time please. I would like you to arrive safely at your destination.

The American Association of Retired Persons is the largest nonprofit group in the world with 38 million members. And it all began right here in Ojai in 1957 over dinner for six people at the Ojai Valley Inn. One of the persons was Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a formidably tall redhead who changed the way the nation thought about aging. Craig Walker joins the podcast to talk about his recently published book, "The Dignity They Deserve" which he co-authored with Mark Lewis. As the title explains, Dr. Andrus, perhaps the first female high school principal in California, grew up in Chicago during the height of the Progressive Era, where she volunteered at Jane Addams' Hull House, before embarking on a career in education. She retired to Ojai and bought the Grey Gables and converted it into a residential facility for retired teachers. Her mission was to show that retired people had much to contribute to their world and communities. The lore is that she found a retired teacher living in abject poverty in a chicken coop. In her anger, she got organized. The AARP was founded to provide health insurance to retired teachers through the American Retired Teachers Association, which Dr. Andrus also established. It proved so wildly successful that the insurance broker, Leonard Davis, who helped set up the underwriting, soon became one of the 400 richest men in America. Dr. Andrus never personally profited off her organization. We talked about the Dr. Andrus' background, and her illustrious career at Lincoln High School, where she revolutionized the way high school was taught. Walker, a retired teacher himself, also talked about his father, the famous architect Rodney Walker, builder of several of the Case Study homes that helped house millions of people. We did not talk about Sumerian cuneiform, great Moghul empire warriors or the sketch comedy of Tim Robinson.

Beto was quite skeptical to leave a comfortable Director of Food & Beverage job at Brinker International to launch a new endeavor, but Julian enthusiasm and energy, took the leap of faith and made the move to launch to what now has become a staple in Dallas. What's one non-tech item in your home that instantly calms you down and has the power to transport you to another place? For me, it's my Bodewell Living candle. The scents are an experience all their own, and lighting the candle and watching the wax melt into a pool is a meditative exercise in itself. Bodewell Living came from humble beginnings and has grown over 250 doors across the US and Canada including Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, HeyMama-owned Paynes Grey (an interior design site), Ojai Valley Inn and more. It was a fast and furious trajectory from zero to explosive. Founder Efstathia Tanji, lovingly known as Effie, started this tiny business in 2018. She sold candles out of the back of her SUV at her daughter's soccer practices. Friends told friends who told their friends and BAM! bodewell was born. But it wasn't easy. Retail giants took notice and Effie found herself drowning under the demands of packing and shipping out of her kitchen day and night. While her dreams materialized before her eyes, she lost sight of what was truly important. Her family. Her community. Her own self. Over time, she has found her place in this world. Effie says, “The world is full of wonder, magic, and endless possibilities. There is space for each and every dreamer, maker, poet, designer, doctor, mother, fighter, believer. This is a time for collaboration over competition. It is a time for transparency and kindness. It is a time for personal as well as global awareness and growth. It is a time to give what you can and ask for what you need.” Effie is the Founder, Designer, Storyteller, and Dreamer of bodewell living. She created it because she wanted to show her children that one could build something from nothing. That you could nurture what seems impossible. That you could scream out in failure and giggle in surprise. That you could build day and night. You could water and wait. You could hold your breath in anticipation. You could watch that something grow. Effie resides in Playa Vista California with her husband Shawn, a firefighter captain and business partner (firefighter and candle maker) Ella, Nico, and Lexei. Chris Kandziora, the Ojai Valley Inn's Sales and Marketing Manager, could very well have been the busiest man in Ojai during the pandemic. In March 2020 as the first lockdown went into effect, Chris had to manage the ramping down of the huge facility, calling the wedding parties, the conferences and conventions, thousands of booked guests, as well as furloughing most of its 800 employees - then he had to manage its ramping up as restrictions loosened later in the summer, then another lockdown in the fall. He was also the Inn's point person for the coordinated pandemic response effort involving the City of Ojai and the Ojai Unified School District. Now, with the pandemic hopefully in the rear-view mirror, the Ojai Valley Inn is steaming ahead with the hotel rooms near capacity and the group business surging back as a restless country gets moving again. The quarantine was not an idle time, however. Chris talks about how the Inn took advantage of the downtime to upgrade many of its 300+ rooms and transformed its iconic Spa with a $3 million makeover, how the Inn hosted the fabled Meadowood Resort's restaurant staff at the Inn's Farmhouse after the property was devastated during the Napa fires of last year, and famed chef Nancy Silverton's food events at the Farmhouse. Not to mention hosting an entire season of the wildly popular American Idol in a COVID bubble. We also talked about his friendship with Buffalo Bills' general manager Brandon Beane, growing up in Waukesha, Wisconsin in a restaurant family, going into the hospitality business after college and his talented interior designer wife Janelle, his two soccer-playing sons and walleye ("they taste like candy"). We did not talk about how the popularity of golf exploded during the pandemic, Hudson Bay Company's trade goods or the Real Madrid FC.

Chamber CEO Jamie Fleming joins us to talk about the chamber's role in managing SBA loans and disaster relief during the pandemic. From his extensive surveys of local businesses, he's optimistic that Ojai will gradually reopen this summer, and that the majority of member businesses will weather this storm in one form or another. He's part of a group dealing with responses through the city council and the Ojai Valley Inn, as well. Fleming also talks about the influx of Los Angeles people coming to Ojai for our hiking trails and beautiful backcountry, and how that might play out as stay-at-home orders are lifted for the 20+million people within a two-hour drive. Those interactions will be carefully managed, with social distancing and face masks, as Ojai, with only 7 cases reported, has been a model for the rest of the state. "It's a Catch 22," Fleming said, about managing the city's reopening in a safe way that allows commerce and allows the city's tax base to recover. With decades of marketing and technology experience in the entertainment industry, Fleming spent most of his career at Disney Corporation and Universal Studios. One of his jobs was managing Mickey Mouse appearances, including one aboard a Navy Destroyer. He was also behind-the-scenes of Universal Studios Florida theme park, when inclement weather close ride after ride in what he called "a rolling disaster." He worked with a lot of film stars, such as Orson Welles and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (former Ojai resident). He also talks about how he ended up responsible for all 5,000 computers at Universal, during the Y2K debacle, "holding our breaths" as the clock ticked over into the new millennium. Another disaster he witnessed was the 2008 fire that destroyed the backlots at Universal. He and his wife Asunta came to Ojai for their daughter's education. A dance prodigy, she was badly injured and shifted her career to fashion modeling, becoming a famous influencer on social media, as well as establishing a career as a singer-songwriter, now living in Nashville. Asunta has graced local stages, most recently at the Art Center's production of "Mamma Mia!" Before becoming the Chamber CEO, Fleming was the executive director of the Ojai Film Festival. He's also involved with a firm called "3rd Brain Technologies," a multi-directional streaming tool for artists. We don't talk about the fiasco that were the Peninsular Wars, the sci-fi works of Philip K. Dick or the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills."

Jordan chats with her dear friend -- who you may recognize from Jordan’s BOOK -- Jamie Graber, the former owner of the renowned raw vegan restaurant Gingersnap’s Organic. Jamie has had a huge impact on Jordan’s life – she was the first person to lovingly tell Jordan that she didn’t look healthy while she was raw vegan. That conversation completely changed Jordan’s life, and now Jamie is helping others do the same. You can learn more about this story in Jordan’s book, Breaking Vegan. Jamie made the incredibly brave decision to walk away from (and CLOSE) Gingersnaps to start her coaching business Organically, Jamie, where she works as a mind shifter, healer, reiki master, manifester, and coach. It took GUTS to leave a thriving restaurant and pursue her passion, but we are so grateful that she has stepped into her light to share her deepest gift with all of us… HEALING. Kick back and enjoy this heart to heart conversation on all things manifesting, expanding, healing, moving on, letting go, having courage from deep within, KUNDALINI, and so much more. We’d like to thank Four Sigmatic for sponsoring the show. These magical, medicinal mushrooms are a big food health trend right now (#OnShrooms), probably because they’re packed full of adaptogens, superfoods, and other things that are super good for you! Four Sigmatic is always releasing new products (like their Mushroom Hot Cacao or Mushroom Mocha with Chaga), and each one is incredibly delicious. You can go to FourSigmatic.com/BLONDE to get 15% off of your order. Jordan also wants to tell you about something she’s been loving lately: Woo for Play, an incredible, all-natural, coconut oil-based lube. We love it for SO many reasons, but our favorite thing is that it empowers women to bring a sexual health product into the bedroom (without making the bedroom any less fun) – and it’s so good for your body that it’s literally edible! You can get 10% off your Woo if you use the promo code BLONDE at WooForPlay.com. And one more special discount... Jordan wants you to go hang at the Ojai Valley Inn! Use the code TBB2018 for 15% off of a midweek stay between now and July 31st, 2018. You can book with this code until May 31st, 2018. Ojai is a magical oasis and you will most certainly fall in love with everything about it, the way Jordan and Jonathan did on their recent trip!
