Welcome to a special episode of The Sewers of Paris! All this month, the Old Church Concert Hall in Portland is celebrating Black History Month with performances honoring Black artists. And I was lucky enough to speak with Kingsley, who helped organize the venue's Blacker the Berry night, coming up on Saturday the 22nd.Kingsley's inspirations span a wide range of genres, starting with a youthful obsession with heartbreak songs before her heart had ever been broken; continuing with a degree in opera; and with her recent work which gleefully breaks all the rules she spent years learning.Check the shownotes for more info about Kingsley, The Old Church's Black History Month lineup, and the Blacker the Berry show next weekend. And if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, I hope you'll consider supporting the show on Patreon. Organically gripping and raw, Hayley Lynn's sultry timbres extend through the various depths of her vocal range as she is soft-spoken but packs a punch when her lyrical motifs drop.Lynn's first body of work “Bring on the Flames,” co-created with producer Kyle Devine, was performed to several sold out shows across the Northwest as well as placement in the Netflix Original shows “The Pier” and “Money Heist.” Since then, Lynn's music has been placed on ABC, the 700 Club, and Big Ten Network, expanding Lynn's reach to international audiences. In addition to being a hometown favorite, Lynn is back on the road with breakthrough performances at festivals and venues such as Northwest Folklife, Oregon Country Fair, Winningstad Theater, Bloodworks Live Studio, Mississippi Studios, The Old Church Concert Hall, and touring through the U.S and Canada.Recently, Lynn released her first solo debut album ‘Horizon'. Many of the songs came as a means to heal. The pandemic was especially hard on artists and Lynn's method of survival was to dive deep into the layers of her life, the feelings that arose and the distractions she used to cope. The result is a velvet voice wrapped in an ocean of sound that is cathartic to lose ourselves in.https://www.hayleylynnmusic.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/3ustZQSFU19uRveWdTUeAdhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/hayley-lynn/1374681637https://www.tiktok.com/@hayleylynnmusic?lang=enhttps://www.instagram.com/hayley_lynn_music/?hl=enhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqIuebsBOUfG6Kk-yeAtwIAhttps://www.facebook.com/HayleyLynnMusic/
Things are still returning from pandemic exile. October brings the return of Miz Kitty's Parlour, the vaudeville show from Lisa Marsicek who is the Miz Kitty Character. Lisa and her troupe of vaudevillians will be at the Old Church Concert Hall on Saturday October 29. She is with me in the Artichoke Café which is where she staged the first Parlor twenty-one years ago…when the Café and Artichoke were in the ole Hawthorne Boulevard location. Next week we'll have Chamber Music Northwest's Executive Director Peter Bilotta. Today, Welcome back Miz Kitty.
Pretty pretty pretty soon we'll be back in the Artichoke Café…just not today. But that's ok because on the other end of this digital connection is the great bass player and composer Phil Baker who has seen the world as a member of Pink Martini since 2003. They are back touring the world but Phil has put together a show called Common Tones. It's a tribute to the great pianist McCoy Tyner on Saturday, March 12 at the Old Church Concert Hall featuring some of our finest Jazz musicians. One thing I want to talk about is a piece he wrote almost 20 years ago that resonates to this day as one of the most beautiful tunes ever composed. Meet. Phil Baker.

This is another Coffeeshop Conversation although our guest is not in the cofeeshop, although I am. And that coffeeshop would be World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th & Glisan. No, talking with us today through the miracle of Skype is John Doe of X and several other bands. He’s bringing his Folk Trio to the Old Church Concert Hall on Saturday, September 22 and Sunday, September 23. John’s no stranger to Portland having played here many times. Doesn’t matter if he’s playing Rock, Americana or in this case Folk. The question is what kind of Folk is he talking about. We’ll find out and let’s not be surprised if an X tune or two finds its way into another genre, he’s known for that. He’s one of the founders of Punk, has documented that in a book, with another on the way. He’s always interesting. Do I dare say, meet John Doe?
Remember the David Simon HBO series Treme? The one based in New Orleans? And the character Davis McAlary? You know, the guy who got fired from WWOZ for sacrificing a chicken in a Voodoo ceremony while on the air? The guy who was kinduva semi-lovable asshole? Well that character was based on a real person who actually had a hand in creating that character (played by Steve Zahn) and also helping create some of the music in the series. His real name is Davis Rogan who is from New Orleans, but went to college at Reed in Portland (and then went home). He's been here before, at Al's Den. He'll be here again on Thursday, August 16 at The Old Church Concert Hall. As Dr. John likes to say, Davis is a Ky-RACK-ter. I spoke with him over the weekend via Skype. He was in Chicago, having opened for Michael McDonald in Oshkosh, WI on the 9th. He would be playing in a club in Chicago that night. He has several albums and we'll end the conversation with a tune called "No Blues" from his latest album Davis Ex Machina. He'll be playing solo piano and singing his quirky tunes in Portland. He's a strange dude. You might even like him.
Welcome back to the newly redone World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th & Glisan in Portland. You have stumbled across another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation. Today in the cupping room with me is Amanda Stark, Executive Director of The Old Church which is now known as The Old Church Concert Hall, something she’s been working on since 2010 and is no longer a work-in-progress….although everything in life really is…but it’s about to be re-launched as one of Portland’s finest venues. Not that it hasn’t been all this time, but the improvements and restoration during Amanda’s time there, including a fabulous sound system, have made TOC (as they like to call it) a beautiful unique place to hear music. What’s been done? How did it get done? What’s coming up? Let’s find out.
