In 1947, a musical premiered in which a conservative US senator is transformed into a woman by a farming commune of "rainbow people" in order to teach him a lesson. Brimming with queer and trans subtext, Finian's Rainbow is a difficult and exhausting watch today but it remains fascinating as an artefact of proto-feminism and postwar LGBTIQA+ history. Sinatra was originally slated to appear in an animated version in the 1950s and even worked on a soundtrack with Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, but the project never eventuated - though he did go on to record "Old Devil Moon" on Songs for Swingin' Lovers! Frustrated by the infamous 1968 Coppola film adaptation, Rabia went in search of any random stage version off YouTube to watch instead - and found a gem in the form of the 2017 Usdan summer camp adaptation with a brilliant young cast, which we spend this episode dissecting. Modern feminists call Finian's Rainbow a whitewashed version of 1940s gender politics, but how does it really hold up today and do its "good intentions" matter? Also, we talk about Robbie Williams, his new biopic Better Man, Sinatra's influence on his work and the US/Commonwealth cultural divide as to whether or not he is famous. website: suddenlypod.gay contact: suddenlypod at gmail dot com donate: ko-fi.com/suddenlypod

Part 5 in the continuing tale of Kilroy Ganski and Booby as told by Kilroy from an orbiting prison.
Here we have another slightly abridged show, clocking in at ten minutes instead of fifteen, but Bob manages to cast a wide musical net nevertheless. After the "Sweet Georgia Brown" intro, the quartet (Bob, Ray Sherman on piano, Jud De Naut on bass, and Ralph Collier on drums and percussion) romps through a very picante "Coca Roca". Check out Ralph Collier's hot bongo work! Our song star Margo Powers calms things down with the rather nebulously titled "When Is Sometime", yet another example of Bob choosing contemporary tunes for his show. In this case, none other than Frank Sinatra had recorded this the same year of 1949 (but didn't make the charts with it). The next tune is again a cover-this time of Dizzy Gillespie's "Dynamo", which was the first release on Dial Records in 1946. Bob's bop chops are not to be missed. Finally, from 1947's Finian's Rainbow, it's the Lane/Harburg classic "Old Devil Moon", beautifully arranged by Bob. We end our very full ten minutes with Bob's interpolation of "Lady Be Good".
Beyond Our Ken (1958–1964) is a radio comedy program, the predecessor to Round the Horne (1965–1968). Both programs starred Kenneth Horne, Kenneth Williams, Hugh Paddick, Betty Marsden and Bill Pertwee, with announcer Douglas Smith. There’s a case to be made that some of the most essential members of our craft beer communities aren’t brewers, or writers, or distributors. They’re publicans who influence the industry by connecting people. Chris Cohen is one such person, though he wears many more hats than that of just beer bar founder. He does indeed run a popular bar in Old Devil Moon, which opened in 2016 in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood, but he didn’t always know he’d wind up there. He was a former IP lawyer in New York, who by chance got into beer by way of a curiosity about homebrewing. A hobby gave way to a passion, and before long, Cohen moved to the Bay Area, founded the San Francisco Homebrewers Guild, and earned the Advanced Cicerone certification. And then, realizing his meticulous Cicerone test note-taking might be of help to others, he launched Beer Scholar, a site and study guide aimed at helping prospective BJCP and Cicerone students pass their exams. But his most recent effort is a novel one, even for him: He’s an outspoken proponent for the commercial use of Nordic kveik yeast, an ingredient he says will change American craft beer due to its ability to drastically cut down fermentation time. It’s a bold argument, but he’s ready to make the case. This is Chris Cohen of San Francisco’s Old Devil Moon. Listen in.
Recorded at the Royal Albert Hotel, it's our yearly live episode for Sydney Beer Week. It doesn’t take place in any particular setting but is more an expression of the themes and trends within each track. With a cast of four world-class professional dancers and one Sinatra rich singer, it explores the themes of love, lust, lies, and regret amongst many others. The album itself was originally strung together in 1956 with an idea of young love in mind and all the songs had an expression of swing to them. The cast together with the rich five-piece band paint an overarching picture to all the ebbs and flows the classic album has to offer.Featuring the hit songs, Old Devil Moon, I’ve Got You Under My Skin and You Make Me Feel So Young.
