Rockshow episode 210 The Story of Phil Lynott and Thin LizzyPhilip Parris Lynott, born on August 20, 1949, in West Bromwich, England, and raised in Dublin, Ireland, was the charismatic frontman, bassist, and primary songwriter of Thin Lizzy—one of the most influential rock bands of the 1970s and early 80s. Known for his poetic lyrics, distinctive voice, and commanding stage presence, Lynott played a crucial role in shaping the band's signature sound, blending hard rock with Celtic influences and storytelling. The Formation of Thin Lizzy (1969-1972)Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in Dublin in 1969, along with drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Eric Bell, and organist Eric Wrixon (who left shortly after). The band was named after a character from a comic book (The Dandy's “Tin Lizzie”). They signed with Decca Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1971, but mainstream success eluded them at first.Their breakthrough came in 1972 with their reworking of the traditional Irish folk song “Whiskey in the Jar,” which became a major hit in Ireland and the UK. However, after their next few albums underperformed, Eric Bell left the band, leading to a major lineup change that would define their classic sound. The Classic Thin Lizzy Lineup (1974-1980)After Bell's departure, Thin Lizzy transitioned into a twin-guitar rock powerhouse. Lynott recruited Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, forming the band's legendary dual-guitar attack. Their first major success in this era came with “The Boys Are Back in Town” (1976) from the Jailbreak album, which remains their most famous song.Notable Albums & Songs:•Jailbreak (1976) – “The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Jailbreak” •Johnny the Fox (1976) – “Don't Believe a Word” •Bad Reputation (1977) – “Dancing in the Moonlight,” “Bad Reputation”•Live and Dangerous (1978) – Regarded as one of the greatest live rock albums of all time•Black Rose: A Rock Legend (1979) – “Do Anything You Want To,” “Waiting for an Alibi,” “Black Rose”Thin Lizzy became known for their explosive live performances, poetic lyrics, and blending of hard rock with Irish storytelling. However, internal tensions, particularly with Brian Robertson's unreliability, led to lineup changes. The Later Years & Decline (1980-1983)Thin Lizzy disbanded in 1983 after a farewell tour, marking the end of an era.Phil Lynott's Solo Career & Tragic DeathAfter Thin Lizzy, Lynott pursued a solo career, releasing two albums:•Solo in Soho (1980) – “King's Call,” “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts”•The Philip Lynott Album (1982) He also collaborated with musicians like Gary Moore (“Out in the Fields”) and worked on various projects. However, his drug addiction worsened, and in late 1985, he collapsed due to complications from heroin and alcohol abuse.Phil Lynott passed away on January 4, 1986, at the age of 36.Thin Lizzy's LegacyDespite Lynott's passing, Thin Lizzy's influence remains strong. Various members have carried on the band's music, with Scott Gorham leading tribute tours. Lynott's lyrical storytelling, stage presence, and fusion of Celtic themes with hard rock inspired countless musicians, including Metallica, Iron Maiden, and U2.Today, Lynott is celebrated as Ireland's first great rock star, with statues, documentaries, and tributes keeping his legacy alive.Essential Listening for New Fans: Phil Lynott remains one of rock's most beloved and tragic figures—a poet, a rocker, and a legend whose music still resonates today.http://www.thinlizzy.org/phil.htmlhttps://youtube.com/@thinlizzyofficial?si=HtxqVIFF3_AuRiWrhttps://www.thinlizzyofficial.com/https://www.facebook.com/share/15serR1qV2/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://x.com/thinlizzy_?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lghttps://www.instagram.com/thinlizzy?igsh=bjE3aXRvdnhnMDVh#ThinLizzy #PhilLynott #RockLegends #ClassicRock #IrishRock #TheBoysAreBackInTown #Jailbreak #LiveAndDangerous #70sRock #HardRock #WhiskeyInTheJar #BlackRose #DancingInTheMoonlight #RockNRoll #LegendaryBands

Donald Rodney (b. 1961, West Bromwich; d. 1998, London) worked across sculpture, installation, drawing, painting, and digital media, experimenting with new materials and technologies throughout his life. His work is known for being incisive, acerbic, and evocative in its analysis of the prejudices and injustices surrounding racial identity, Black masculinity, chronic illness, and Britain's colonial past. Rodney was also co-founding member of the BLK Art Group: an association of young Black artists formed in Wolverhampton in 1982.Visceral Canker is the major survey of the artist's work at Spike Island, bringing together all of Rodney's surviving works. This includes large-scale oil pastels on X-rays, kinetic and animatronic sculptures, and restaged installations, as well as sketchbooks and rare archive materials, spanning 1982 to 1997. Also on display is Autoicon (1997–2000), an interactive digital artwork initiated by Rodney and finalised by a group of his close friends after he died from sickle cell anaemia in 1998. The exhibition is curated by Robert Leckie, Spike Island's former Director, and Nicole Yip - the gallery's new director. Today, I am joined by both Nicole and Robert, to discuss the life and work of Donald Rodney, the ambitions of the exhibition and the complexities involved in interpreting an artist's work once they are no longer with us. The exhibition will tour at Nottingham Contemporary from 28 September 2024 to 5 January 2025 and at Whitechapel Gallery from 12 February to 18 May 2025.Please support our independent podcast by donating £5 hereRead Shade Art Review Shade Art Review Series 11 | 20% discount codeShade Podcast InstagramShade Podcast WebsiteShade Podcast is Executive produced and hosted by Lou MensahMusic King Henry IV for Shade Podcast by Brian JacksonEdit & Mix by Mae-Li EvansEditorial support from Anne Kimunguyi Help support the work that goes into creating Shade Podcast. https://plus.acast.com/s/shadepodcast. Robert Plant is a singer and songwriter who was Led Zeppelin's frontman from the band's inception in 1968 until it disbanded in 1980. Led Zeppelin sold hundreds of millions of albums and in their heyday acquired a reputation for unbridled rock ‘n' roll hedonism. Since 1980 Robert has gone on to achieve success as a solo artist and has collaborated with other musicians, notably the bluegrass singer Alison Krauss. Their 2007 album Raising Sand won five Grammy Awards. Robert was born in West Bromwich in 1948. At 15 he appeared on stage for the first time as the lead vocalist for a local band after the regular singer fell ill. In 1965 he started performing with the Crawling King Snakes and it was after one of the band's gigs that he met his friend, the drummer John Bonham. In 1968 Robert and John joined up with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones to form Led Zeppelin. Later that year the band embarked on its first US tour and the enthusiastic response from American audiences heralded a new force in British music. Over the next 12 years the band released eight studio albums including Led Zeppelin IV which featured one of their most popular tracks – Stairway to Heaven. In 1980 John Bonham died from alcohol poisoning at the age of 32 and Led Zeppelin broke up. Devastated by his friend's death, Robert took himself off to explore other creative avenues, recording and performing with a wide range of artists. Robert and Alison Krauss released their second album, Raising the Roof, in 2021. Robert lives in Worcestershire near where he grew up. Back of the Net - The AFC Bournemouth Podcast

Two very different performances from Boscombe sees contrasting views from AFC Bournemouth fans, who firstly react at full-time after beating Bristol City 3-2 in a scoreline which possibly flattered the opposition. Aside from a few minutes at either end of the game, Bournemouth looked sharp and strong, and whilst the Robins showed spurts of impetus, the Cherries defence and Mark Travers were up to the task, with the latter providing a crucial save when it mattered! Contrast this though with a poor poor showing in the Midlands. Sam, Tom, Jeff and Steve react in a windy West Bromwich after AFC Bournemouth put in a poor showing against the Baggies at The Hawthorns, mustering not even a single shot on target. It was a display that lacked tempo, desire or technical quality, and whilst the winning streak under referee Keith Stroud's stewardship came to an end, the turgid run against Steve Bruce however continues. Plus, reaction from the four buccaneering Cherries who travelled over six days to deliver humanitarian aid INSIDE Ukraine to people who people who have needed it the most,. The boys re-live the trip with their absorbing stories of concern, comedy, and coincidences. With 13 hours of ferry crossings and 40 hours of driving, John Williams, Gary Francis and Simon Cable have some stories to tell, and with David Joyner also on the mission, we go behind the scenes to watch their video diaries and see raw footage from their incredible effort. Credit unions are local where it matters, no matter where in the world they're based. Diego and his guests explore this credit union commitment to community and the universal desire to empower every member fiscally - with Tanya Valdez, DNCU member; Juan Fernández Ceballos, president and CEO, Credit Union Association of New Mexico; Malcolm Keyte, business development manager, 6Towns Credit Union, West Bromwich, UK; and Chris Murrin, sales experience support manager, GTE Financial, Tampa, FL. So, you deposit money into a traditional bank account. Where does it go after that? In today's consolidated corporate marketplace, the answer is often far, far away.  Credit unions are different. We build long-term relationships which allow us to design unique options for the communities we serve. Nowhere was that credit union advantage more evident than during the height of the pandemic. Tanya appreciated the security her membership provided back then and the initiatives it's supporting now. In the last year, people have paid greater attention to their closest relationships. Credit unions have always operated from this focus on local responsibility. “When you put dollars at Del Norte Credit Union, for example, that money gets lent right back into the community, so you are helping to create jobs,” explains Juan, adding, “you are helping drive growth opportunities and employment right within our communities.”  While locale and size may differ, every credit union understands membership in the same way. It's all about belonging. Malcolm agrees. “Over the past 12 months, I have found it's been very much connected on a more basic level.” Credit unions meet members where they are, accompanying them throughout their entire financial journey, from opening a checking account to securing loans and saving for retirement. “We are truly focused on the long-term relationship with that member,” says Chris.  Financial Tea Hot Sip: Local credit unions are part of a national network of ATMs and full-service branches.

Tax Avoidance is a way of paying minimal to no tax using as many methods as possible to pay as little as possible. Tax Evasion is the non-payment of tax and is a criminal offence. Mark is often surprised at the lack of knowledge among property investors regarding tax laws and regulations that can be helpful or detrimental to their income. He puts this down to the commonly held belief that many coming into the property investment industry seem to feel that they are not actually running a business. Ideally, Mark would like to see this attitude to be corrected. Section 24 was designed to level the playing field between property investors and first-time buyers trying to get onto the property ladder. It only applies to people who pay self-assessment income tax on their property income. Mark has seen many paradigms shift during his thirty-four years in the industry. There was a reasonable amount of money around, and the “hobbyist” attitude toward property investment meant that there was not much in the way of regulation. When the credit crunch came, the investment market was taken a lot more seriously. If you enter into property investment with the view that you are the CEO of a significant business, that is the way that you will achieve success. When it comes to consulting a tax expert, Mark advises speaking to one as soon as possible once a decision has been made to enter the industry. Not only will it help you to understand the many regulations you need to adhere to, but it can also save you money and time. There may be a raft of measures your expert can help you with from the start. Property investment is hard work, and you are entitled to run it in the best and most efficient way possible so as to reap the maximum rewards from it. This is why it's definitely worth seeking professional help so as to best structure your tax plan. Mark does not advocate shady methods of avoiding tax but does suggest that there may be many legal avenues through which less tax can be paid, thereby increasing your benefits. On the back on Mark's famous case against the West Bromwich Building Society in 2016, he began to work with Property 118 in order to see to it that over two hundred businesses have been able to be incorporated, as well as advising on trust structures and partnership structures. So far, Mark's only experience of the “Brexit Effect” in terms of property has been a tailing off of interest from EU citizens wishing to invest, or even rent in Britain, which is completely understandable. Until the full terms and effects of Brexit are known, no definite plans or stability in the market can be assured. Mark's top tips for those interested, or for those already involved in property investment would be to plan properly. Make sure you have taken the time to get educated about what you're doing. Forums are a great place to learn from each other. Remember that you are the CEO of a significant business; be more robust in speaking to the paid professionals who work for you and tell them what you want to achieve. Always take the best advice that you can. You don't need to take a lot of advice, just take the best.   BEST MOMENTS ‘I still love doing things that make a difference to somebody' ‘If you have five or six properties, you're suddenly at the head of a million-pound business.
