Photo: Mariana Lopez courtesy BAMPFA. Susan Oxtoby, Director of Film and Senior Film Curator at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), discusses the current retrospective of the films of the great Belgian-French film maker Agnes Varda (1928-2019) with host Richard Wolinsky. Agnes Varda began her career as a stills photographer and became a director with La Point Courte (1954), having seen very few films in her life. She went on to international fame with Cleo from 5 to 7 and Vagabond, but her late life films The Beaches of Agnes and Faces, Places established her as one of the most important directors of the modern era. All the films discussed in this interview (except the new documentary Viva Varda!) are available to stream on the Criterion app, save for Faces, Places, which can be streamed on Kanopy. Cleo from 5 to 7 can also be streamed on Max.   Burton Lane, Broadway and Hollywood composer and sometime lyricist, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, April 1992 in New York, second of two parts. Peter and Nathan watched this movie so you don't have to! It's time for a deep cut... We're talking about the 1970 film version of Alan Jay Lerner and Burton Lane's very strange musical, On A Clear Day You Can See Forever – a show about a psychiatrist with terrible boundaries.   We talk about: ESP: Is there a meaningful distinction between extrasensory perception and Christian conceptions of spirituality and prayer? Reincarnation: We talk about the case of Bridey Murphy, the 19th-century Irishwoman who was purportedly reincarnated as a 20th century American housewife. What are we supposed to believe about the afterlife? Grief: So many conversations about the afterlife happen in the context of death & grief. Does profound grief open us up to alternate conceptions of the universe in a way that can be helpful – or is that simply our emotions talking? Clothes: Always the clothes. The Cecil Beaton gowns! The turbans! Be still, our hearts! You'll hear: Yves Montand, Barbra Streisand and the cast of the film singing "Come Back To Me," "Love With All The Trimmings" and "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever" as well as the Peddlers' version of the film's title song.   Continue the conversation with us on Instagram and The Platform Formerly Known as Twitter (@gospelofmt).

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. His other Broadway show, Carmelina, was produced in 1979. In 1992, after creating a radio documentary about Leonard Bernstein, Richard Wolinsky embarked on another documentary on the life and music of George Gershwin, which started with a Morning Concert program featuring Ira Gershwin's nephew Michael Strunsky and Gershwin expert Deena Rosenberg. That was followed followed with interviews with Michael's father English Strunsky, with Ira Gershwin's archivist, later a noted cabaret performer, Michael Feinstein, and New York Grande Dame Kitty Carlisle, who dated George Gershwin in the 1930s. This interview as the fifth of seven interviews, after which for personal reasons, the project was abandoned. Special thanks to Ernie Harburg, son of Burton Lane's lyricist E.Y. Yip Harburg, and to Gershwin historian Deena Rosenberg Harburg for their assistance in setting up this, and the other interviews in the Gershwin Project. George Gershwin was born in 1898 and his brother Ira two years earlier. At the age of 15 he took a job as a song-plugger, playing other people's songs on a piano for Remick Music Publisher for the sale of their sheet music. His first composed song was published when he was 17, and at 21 he scored his first big hit, Swanee. But it wasn't until 1924 when he teamed up with his brother Ira as lyricist that George Gershwin became, what we might call a superstar, which he remained until his untimely death from a brain tumor in 1937. Ira Gershwin, who went on to work with other composers until he retired in the early 1960s, died in 1983. The Gershwin Project Interview I: English Strunsky, Ira Gershwin's brother-in-law and George's wingman in the 1920s. Composer and librettist Scott Eyerly has won acclaim across a wide range of genres. From The House of the Seven Gables (praised by Opera News for its "maximum drama and melodically memorable set pieces") to Missa Brevis No. 2 (called by Choral Journal "a study in beauty and simplicity"), Eyerly brings to all his works a direct, American lyricism.  Eyerly notes, "I grew up singing hymns, but also show tunes. Then at college, I studied with composers from opposite corners of the ring, William Bolcom and Elliott Carter. In those days, after a lesson with Carter in the morning, I'd rush to rehearse songs for a theater revue that afternoon!  Later I taught musical theater courses at Juilliard, interviewing masters like Sondheim, Harnick, and Burton Lane. My love of musicals has always 'balanced' my love of the longhairs."  An active lecturer, Eyerly is on the faculty of The Juilliard School where he teaches sold-out courses on opera, musical theater and classical music. Since 2007 he has given popular talks at the Mahaiwe Theater in the Berkshires to introduce each Metropolitan Opera HD broadcast, a series which continues to grow and is now available online. Born in a suburb of Chicago, he and his wife live in New York City. POOCH is a zany musical set in present day Manhattan, based on real events. A once-proud classical music label has been taken over by a conglomerate that makes dog food. The head office installs a new C.E.O. who knows nothing about music. He hears that one classical artist is making a fortune – so he orders Samantha, his new Sales Director, to set up dinner with Puccini... who's been dead 100 years. Sam vows to meet the challenge – and expose her sexist boss. To do so, she enlists the help of Clark, a shy colleague so smitten he writes poetry about her. In their quest to prevail over corporate madness, Sam and Clark encounter snooping journalists, unexpected judo, a missing dog, and an oversupply of fake mustaches. All roads lead to the climax in a Village opera café, where Sam & Clark & C.E.O. sit down to… dinner with Puccini!

Alan Jay Lerner was very busy in 1951, writing the screenplay for An American In Paris, writing songs for the Broadway show Paint Your Wagon and working with Burton Lane for eight songs for the movie musical Royal Wedding. That Fred Astaire movie featured the Oscar-nominated song "Too Late Now," which marked Lerner's first songwriting Oscar nomination. Will he win on his first try, or will Oscar Hammerstein II earn his third for revising a song originally meant for a Marx Brothers movie?

CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of murder, grief, trauma, loss, catatonia, mental illness, delusion, guilt, shame, AIDS, homelessness, misogyny, depression. This week we're discussing a film that's one of the most beautiful messes you'll ever see. Beautiful, because it revels in medieval mythology while telling a story of redemption in our modern lives. Messy, because our director didn't seem to care about creating a consistent, thorough world for his characters to live in. It's a movie that doesn't hold up as well on deeper scrutiny, and yet also hits you right in the heart with a truly lovely story and incredibly strong performances from some of the best actors in the business. If only Terry Gilliam had reigned himself in just a little bit, this would have been absolutely perfect. Michael Feinstein, American songbook performer, discussing his work as archivist for Ira Gershwin with host Richard Wolinsky, Michael Feinstein is an American singer, songwriter and classicist of the American songbook. At the age of 20, he was hired to help Ira Gershwin archive his collection of recordings and preserving unpublished Gershwin sheet music. He continued that task for the next seven years. By the 1980s he was a well known cabaret performer, and soon had several CDs under his belt. He has been nominated five times for Grammy Awards. Has been the subject of a PBS documentary series, and hosts a radio show on NPR, among other projects, along with two nightclubs, one of which, Feinstein's at the Nikko, is in San Francisco. His latest album is titled “Gershwin Country.” Created to air as commentary for a 1991 KPFA Morning Concert focused on a new recording of the 1927 production of “Strike Up The Band,” excerpts of this interview were also intended to be used for a radio documentary on the life of George Gershwin. This was one of seven interviews recorded for the program before it was abandoned. Three interviews have already been posted as Radio Wolinsky podcasts. The three remaining interviews, with Gershwin scholar Deena Rosenberg, author and musicologist Robert Kimball and the late Broadway composer Burton Lane, will eventually be posted. This interview has not been heard since its initial broadcast on KPFA. Interview II: Musicologist Deena Rosenberg and Michael Strunsky, Ira Gershwin's nephew. Interview III: Kitty Carlisle. On Friday 10 June 2022, Judy Garland celebrates her 100th birthday. My Pride 2022 series kicks off with a close examination of Judy's status as gay icon, as well as my claim that Garland was, is, and remains the world's greatest entertainer of all time. As always with Countermelody, the proof is in the performances, and I share a generous sampling of recordings, primarily from the final years of Judy's life, that bolster that claim. Included are performances of songs by Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg, Ted Koehler, Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Jule Styne, Burton Lane, Alan Jay Lerner, Cole Porter, Cy Coleman, Carolyn Leigh, Gilbert Bécaud, Wright and Forrest, Schwartz and Dietz, Charles Chaplin, and others, in live recordings from The Judy Garland Show, which ran for a single season in 1963-64; live concert performances from New York, Amsterdam, London, Paris, Philadelphia, and Copenhagen; and a smattering of rare studio recordings. I also discuss the impact of Judy's enormous talent impact on my own life, as well as her still-substantial numbers of worldwide fans. Vocal guest stars include two other classic gay icons, Barbra Streisand, and Judy's own daughter, Liza Minnelli. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. If you had a favorite television show growing up, there’s a pretty good chance Pamelyn Ferdin appeared on it. In addition to several series of her own, Pamelyn made memorable guest appearances on such programs as Star Trek, The Brady Bunch, The Monkees, Bewitched, Gunsmoke, Family Affair, and The Flying Nun. She played Felix Unger’s daughter, Edna, on multiple episodes of The Odd Couple, and is perhaps best known as the voice of Lucy Van Pelt in Peanuts TV specials and the feature film, A Boy Named Charlie Brown. Pamelyn was the busiest child actor in Hollywood for the better part of a decade, performing in more than 200 television episodes, about 30 feature films and made-for-TV movies, and hundreds of television commercials, nearly all of them before she was out of her teens. As an actress, she performed with some of the legends of show business, acting alongside Jack Benny, Walter Brennan, John Cassavetes, Bing Crosby, Clint Eastwood, Gene Kelly, Elsa Lanchester, Shirley MacLaine, Dean Martin, Ray Milland, Maureen O’Sullivan, Geraldine Page, Vincent Price, Tony Randall, Cliff Robertson, and Jonathan Winters; as a singer, she introduced songs by such celebrated songwriters as Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Sammy Cahn and Burton Lane, Rod McKuen, and Richard and Robert Sherman; and as a dancer, she performed on stage and screen with Buddy Ebsen, Jerry Lewis, and Debbie Reynolds. She enjoyed the experience of working in one capacity or another with entertainment icons Walt Disney, Steven Spielberg, Charles M. Schulz, Dr. Seuss, Chuck Jones, Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, and the world’s most famous four-legged TV star, Lassie. Pamelyn began doing commercials at the age of three and graduated to feature films at the age of four, playing Shirley MacLaine’s and Dean Martin’s daughter in the hit comedy What a Way to Go! By the age of six she was the busiest child actor in the business.

Shook, co-editor of the new Oxford Handbook of Secularism, about the rise of nonbelief around the world.

TOPIC: THE UNCHRISTMAS SHOWTo provide respite from the seasonal state/church and religious onslaughts, Freethought Radio devotes most of its program to great secular songwriting. The very special guest is Lynn Lane, 86, widow of the legendary songwriter Burton Lane, who reminisces about her husband and lyricist Yip Harburg, both unbelievers, and creators of "Finian's Rainbow," now a hit Broadway revival. After a little news, the hosts dissect one of the show's irreverent pieces, "The Begats," play snippets of songs, and speak with the charming Lynn Lane.
