Today on The Neil Haley Show, Neil "The Media Giant" Haley will interview Don Most.   "I'm back with my first love," says Don.  Before Most was an actor, he was a singer.  Fans may fondly recall episodes of "Happy Days" that featured the now iconic characters playing for patrons at the popular hang out called "Al's.”  Nowadays, Don's backed by a twelve-piece band on a national concert tours.  Although his red hair is silver now, he has clearly retained his appeal, appearing before packed houses of multiple generations, performing standards like "Lady Is A Tramp," "I Can't Give you Anything But Love" and "It Had To Be You." A scan of his audiences show fans in their late 20's to blue-haired music aficionados.  His enthusiasm and expertise is contagious, and it isn't long before everyone is either tapping their toes, bobbing their heads and visibly swaying in time to the tunes.  Most and his group salute standards and composers from almost every decade of the last century.  In addition, Most excites the audience by sharing his knowledge of music through warm stylish deliveries and selections of swing, jazz and rock-and-roll.   Most has acted on television and directed several movies, but clearly finds a special connection with music of the Swing Era.  Shifting easily between vocal styles, Most pays homage to The Chairman of the Board, Dean Martin, and his idol Bobby Darin, while paying tribute to the path that brought him back to his musical roots.

Welcome to episode number 80 of the Wedding Songs Podcast. I am Matt Campbell and today I am going to be talking about Jazz songs you can play during your wedding ceremony and reception. If you prefer to read the list you can do so on our website MyWeddingSongs.com. Just go to playlists in the main menu then genre. Right there you will see all of the genres including Jazz. If you have any questions about any songs on the list, you can reach out to me on the website. While you're there, on the main menu, make sure you subscribe to our monthly newsletter. It goes out on the last day of the month and features all the new wedding songs released in the prior month. It also has great song ideas for date night or even just sitting by the fire. I realize that not every wedding will want to play Jazz music because it can be a slower tempo, but there are some great Jazz songs you can incorporate into your wedding day. Now, Boney James recently released an album that is becoming wildly popular. One of the songs I would like to talk about today is “Coastin'” by Boney James featuring LeLah Hathaway, make sure you listen to that song. Another common crooner that is on a lot of Jazz song lists is Frank Sinatra. One of his most popular songs is “Fly Me To The Moon” which features Count Basie and his orchestra. Also his song “My Way” you could have as the last dance song that everybody will sing along to. Those are a few really popular Jazz songs that are being downloaded and streamed right now. Let's go ahead and get started on the list. Starting off with “Valentine” by Laufey released in 2022. Now you can't really go wrong with a song titled “Valentine” and the lyrics…How the hell did I fall in love this time? And honestly, I can't believe I get to call you mine. I blinked and suddenly, I had a Valentine. You have to love those lyrics that you can incorporate into your wedding. The modern-day crooner, Michael Buble is also a very popular Jazz artist, or you may consider adult contemporary. His new album Higher, also released in 2022, features great songs like “A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square” with the lyrics…It was such a romantic affair, And when you turned and smiled at me. A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square. Another song on that album is “My Valentine” with the lyrics…And she'll be there, This love of mine, My Valentine. If R&B is your thing, one of my favorite new songs is “It Had To Be You” but this is not the Harry Connick version, this is by Jac Ross with a more Jazz / R&B feel to it. Lyrics include…I wandered around, and I finally found, The somebody who could make me be true. And could make me be blue, And even be glad, Just to be sad – thinking of you. Two mega stars collaborated together, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga in 2021, for a whole album. My favorite song on that album is “I Get A Kick Out Of You” with the lyrics…Flying too high with some gal in the sky is my idea of nothing to do, Yet I get a kick, You give me a whirl, I get a kick out of you, Get my kicks out of you. For true Jazz fans, “Everything You Touch Is Gold” by Gregory Porter in 2020, I really love Gregory Porters' voice and his Jazz feel you could have as a background song or even during the wedding ceremony. Lyrics include…And it feels like heaven, Touchin' your hand, But it's just like heaven, Callin' your name. The next song I want to mention is a song you could play throughout your wedding ceremony,

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are airing an encore episode of our conversation with Andy Marx, who has not one but two well known grandparents. Yes, you heard that right. Andy is our only guest so far who is the grandchild of a celebrity. One grandfather, as you might have guessed from his last name was indeed Groucho Marx, of, who else, Marx Brothers. What's more, his other grandfather was songwriter Gus Kahn who wrote standards as “It Had To Be You”, “Dream a Little Dream of Me, ”Makin' Whoopie” and many more. Gus was so famous, Andy heard from none other than George Harrison that Gus was one of his favorite songwriters. We talk to Andy about everything from spending time with grampa Groucho at his Beverly Hills house in the late 70s and helping him preserve a truck full of “You Bet Your Life” episode that might have been tossed had it not been for Andy's insistence they stay. We also talk about a wide ranging number of celebrities such as Elton John, Jack Nicholson, Ron Wood and Marcel Marceau who all inhabited the Marx orbit. We even get into the wild and the wacky Erin Fleming who was Groucho's companion for the last years of his life. So say the secret word and stick around…it's all next on the Rarified Heir Podcast.

You've heard of piano-vocal duos and guitar-vocal duos. But what about trombone-vocal duos? Vanessa Perea and husband Robert Edwards are trendsetting this unique instrumentation. They first showcased it on their album Home Life in 2021, which was a purely vocal and trombone album. Now their latest album, It Had To Be You, brings that same playful interaction — and adds guitarist Tony Davis and bassist Dylan Shamat. Vanessa and Robert first met during their undergrad years at New Jersey City University. A move across the river into New York City proved fruitful to both of their careers. Calls were coming in and their schedules stayed busy. That is, until the pandemic hit. With nothing but time to kill, Vanessa and Robert started exploring the idea of playing with what they had — a voice and a trombone — and spent hours working out arrangements (much to the chagrin of their downstairs neighbors). When social distancing restrictions were lifted, they were happy to add a few more band members to their project. It Had To Be You is a delightful offering of musicians pushing the boundaries of traditional instrumentation. Listen to this Bite-Size Jazz episode featuring Vanessa Perea to get to know a vocalist with a style all her own. She talks about learning to coordinate vocal-trombone performing, the process of recording the album, and her musical background. Resources: Learn more about Vanessa Perea on her website, Instagram, or Facebook. You can find It Had To Be You anywhere you stream music. THE ORIGIN OF THIS MUSIC:Created by Gibbs Williams  It is hard to believe it has been decades since I graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School. It is even harder to believe that I received an invitation to attend the 65th reunion. Unfortunately, with the covid pandemic still in the air, although vaccinated, I thought it prudent better to pass up this event hoping conditions fare more salutary for the 70th. Although disappointed I would miss the reunion I was struck by a wave of pleasurable nostalgia.           Recalling those the best of those glorious days I remember the feelings of the cool Miami Beach breezes enveloping us on our weekly Friday night dances in the patio of our high school. All who attended seemed hypnotized with feelings of a pervasive feeling of at-one-ment in which we collectively bathed in what was then and even now experienced as our own unique mixture of heroin- like- atmosphere. This natural high was experienced by many of us as nothing short of pure unadulterated nostalgia. Nostalgia then and now was like our living in a collective commune protecting us from what probably would have been experienced as overwhelming normal adolescent pain if we had been open to feeling it.  I was especially nostalgic remembering my self and four other guys daring to form a small combo good enough to play at all of the school dances. We even played well enough that every New Years Eve a Miami Beach Hotel hired us to perform. Our Small combo consisted of Drums (Marvin Guccion), Bass (John Schaffer), Trombone (Peter Weill), Trumpet (Kenny Kupper) and Piano (Gibbs Williams). Unknowingly we had no knowledge that we were on the cutting edge of what would soon be an explosion of worldwide bands.           In is in this memorable context that I wish to share an album of some of those unforgettable songs which best seem to celebrate the richness not only of those glorious days from the 9th to the 12th grade, but all the years that have too quickly passed - as well as the years that are yet to come. It is unfortunate that we never recorded our iconic sounds. The best I can offer with the goal in mind of capturing the sounds we made are my original arrangements made on my Yamaha synthesizer. The songs we played were standards from the forties and fifties. I have titled this compilation Nostalgia.                                "NOSTALGIA" -  65 th REUNION - MIAMI BEACH HIGH SCHOOL - CLASS of 55 Moon Over Miami , Ebb Tide, Star Dust, It Might As Well Be Spring, Teguilla, The Hucklebuck, Five Foot Two, Somewhere Along the Way, Im In The Mood For Love, Again, Blue Moon, Miami Beach Rhumba, Because of You, Rock Around the Clock, Down By The Riverside, Tammy's In Love, Where Is Your Heart, Don't Blame Me, If I Loved You, I'll Take Manhattan, The Man I Love, A Secret Love, Autumn Leaves, Summer Time, Mona LIsa, Take the A Train,Perfidia, It's No Sin, It Had To Be You, For Me And My Gal, Thrill Me, You're Just In Love, Yellow Bird, Canadian Sunset, A Taste Of Honey, Too Young, Saint Louis Blues, My Foolish Heart, You Belong To Me, Sleepy Time Gal, Body and Soul, The Nearness Of You, Misty, Sweet Georgia Brown, Blue Skies, Tenderly, Some Enchanted Evening, Bali High, Bewitched, Once Upon A Time, As Time Time Goes By, Aways, Fight Song Of The Miami Beach Hight Marching Band A and B.       I know all was not perfect then as we were all struggling to survive adolescence so those days were hardly always serene. Yet, there was, and still is for me and I imagine for many of my class mates, a certain undeniable 'specialness' about our class which for many of us still acts like a permanent magnet pulling us back again and again to re-unite.       As for me, if we had been recognized as ground-breaking I am certain our lives at least vocationally would have taken a much different route. However, I can honestly say that I am happy to being a still practicing psychoanalyst in New York City - a happily married husband and father having started our own dynasty of four grandchildren.

For the past twenty years, Liv and Eliot Goldenhorn have run In Love in New York, Brooklyn's beloved wedding-planning business. When Eliot dies unexpectedly, he even more unexpectedly leaves half of the business to his younger, blonder girlfriend, Savannah. Liv and Savannah are not a match made in heaven, to say the least. But what starts as a personal and professional nightmare transforms into something even savvy, cynical Liv Goldenhorn couldn't begin to imagine. It Had to Be You cleverly unites Liv, Savannah, and couples as diverse and unique as New York City itself, in a joyous Love-Actually-style braided narrative. The result is a smart, modern, utterly charming love story that truly speaks to our times. Georgia Clark is a novelist and performer. She's the author of It Had To Be You, The Regulars, The Bucket List, and others. She's also the host and founder of the popular storytelling night, Generation Women. That's being raised for autonomy. "For the past twenty years, Liv and Eliot Goldenhorn have run In Love in New York, Brooklyn’s beloved wedding-planning business. When Eliot dies unexpectedly, he even more unexpectedly leaves half of the business to his younger, blonder girlfriend, Savannah. Liv and Savannah are not a match made in heaven, to say the least. But what starts as a personal and professional nightmare transforms into something even savvy, cynical Liv Goldenhorn couldn’t begin to imagine. It Had to Be You cleverly unites Liv, Savannah, and couples as diverse and unique as New York City itself, in a joyous Love-Actually-style braided narrative. The result is a smart, modern, utterly charming love story that truly speaks to our times." Thanks for listening! We'd love to hear from you! Please consider leaving a review and subscribing. Today we are talking to Andy Marx who has not just one incredible grandfather but two. Andy is the grandson of the amazing Groucho Marx as well as songwriter Gus Kahn. Whoa. Andy gives us the lowdown on what it was like spending time with Groucho archiving his hit TV show You Bet Your Life and how common it was to have guests over for dinner like Jack Nicholson, Elliott Gould and Marcel Marceau. But just as amazing was his other grandfather Gus wrote such Great American Songbook standards as “It Had To Be You”, “Dream a Little Dream of Me,”“Makin’ Whoopie” and so many others. Want to find out what was it like having Seder with Ron Wood, Ahmet Ertegun one day and  Alice Cooper and Shep Gordon the next? Uh, yeah. We talk song pluggers, tea boys, conservatorships and Tin Pan Alley on the next Rarified Heir Podcast. But only if you say the secret word…..

This week Jess Pryde joins Jenn for a special romance episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Engineering for Cats by Mac Delaney and our $500 YA Giveaway.   Questions   1. Hi Amanda and Jenn, Love the show! I've read so many great books based on your recommendations. I love to read romance novels, usually the steamier the better. But the thing I enjoy most about them is the sexual tension and building intimacy. I like to see that a couple actually cares for each other and it’s not just a one night stand. To give you an idea, some books that I've really enjoyed are Hold Me by Courtney Milan; Hate to Want You by Alisha Rai; Sarah J. Maas' Court of Thorns and Roses series; A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev; and The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. I know there's a ton more out there but would love to get your suggestions on some great ones. I'm open to pretty much anything. Thanks! --Becca   2. Hi ladies! I'm looking for a novel that contains a great love story. A lot of romances written today (both contemporary and historical) turn me off because it seems like the couple has an immediate attraction that results in inevitable sex scenes while complications still exist, and then the rest of the book is the main characters finding out how to have an actual relationship in addition to the sex, despite whatever plot devices are in their way. I think Jane Austen spoiled me. Call me old fashioned, but I want a couple that fall in love without having sex first! I especially like stories where the guy has been in love with the girl for a long time but doesn't think he has a chance for some reason. Think Molesley and Baxter from Downton Abbey (which I am STILL salty about not being resolved) or Professor Bhaer and Jo from Little Women. It doesn't have to be an old book and it doesn't have to be strictly romance; I'm perfectly willing to read any book as long as it makes me ACHE over several hundred pages for the prospective lovers to finally communicate their feelings! Thank you so much! P.S. I forgot to mention that I read A Distant Heart recently, and that's more in the realm of what I'm looking for since the sex came very late after the two had already had years of build up, but I'd still prefer a book where the profession of love comes before the sex! --Brannan   3. Dear Jenn and Amanda, I'm a huge fan of your show and Book Riot in general. I'm really looking forward to Book Riot Live! Thanks for being so amazing! I'm proudly a plus-sized/curvy (for lack of a better term) woman in her late twenties, and I was wondering if you had recommendations for books with female main characters who are also described this way. Growing up I really identified with Meg Murray because she felt out of place with her appearance like I did. Recently, I have loved reading Dumplin', Size 12 is Not Fat, Duff, and Bet Me because they featured characters I could relate to physically who were described positively and had a happy ending that didn't involve them losing a lot of weight. (I most recently read It Had To Be You, and didn't love it.) I loved the body positive message of each book, and I'm a sucker for a makeover sequence, but I have always hated reading books where the fat/chubby girl found happiness after losing a few pounds. I plan on reading Shrill and 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl, but I was wondering if you had any recommendations for fiction or romance books with more characters I could relate to that have enjoyable story lines. I have read too many non-fiction books and graphic novels, so I would prefer not to get books in those categories. I also have learned that I don't do well with reading books with unlikeable characters, for example, I struggled with Girl On the Train and Gone Girl. I'm sorry for this incredibly long email, but I would really appreciate any help that you could give me! Thank you so much! Sincerely, --M   4. Hi Amanda and Jenn! My TBR is getting ridiculous because of this podcast, but I still love it! I'm currently in grad school reading some very dry material about metadata, and I need something exciting to get me through this dull semester. Lately, I've been in the mood for some romance. Something non traditional like The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. I love the slow and sexy build of the couple's relationship and how for the majority of the series they didn't trust each other, and fought all the time. However, they always had each other's back. I love how you never knew if they were going to kill or kiss each other. I haven't been able to find anything like this. I read all genres, so I'll take any recommendations you've got! Thanks! --Ana   5. Until listening to different book riot podcasts and reading this site I was prejudiced against romance novels. When I was in middle school and starting to explore adult literature, I was also curious about sex and found some romance books to read. My thirteen year old self however just picked whatever free ebook I could find so my parents wouldn't know what I was reading. Consequently I read some pretty bad novels, and have since considered romance "lesser literature" (yes yes I'm a bad person- but I'm trying to rectify the situation!). Also as I've gotten older I've found I find it harder and harder for a writer to convince me a romance is real, and I also enjoy a healthy dose of plot unrelated to romance. I fall on the snooty side of reading classics and literary fiction, but I want to expand my horizons. I love historical fiction so if you know of any good romance set it in the past that is a plus. But really I just want to know what you think are some good romance reads for beginners that will get me interested in the genre. Thanks! P.S. My favorite kinds of romance are the forbidden kind, and the love/hate thing (i.e. Han and Leia, or Starbuck and Apollo from Battlestar Galactica). Yes I'm a cliche. --Connie   6. Hello---I thought I was done with Romance (novels, not in real life, of course), but then I listened to your Podcast all about romance, decided to try a few you recommended and guess what? I am in love with Romance novels again! But--there are so many to choose from and I've been away from the genre for so long, I am hoping you can recommend some new ones for me. I am open to pretty much anything, but if you know of something kind of "Southern" and a bit more "intense" than some, that would be great. I'm also not adverse to same sex love stories --I read "Think of England" from your rec and loved it. Also Loved "Every Good Earl Deserves a Lover" and Julia Quinn's Bridgerton Series. Loved them, just looking for a little bit more intense (sex and story). Can you help me? Thanks so much. --Debbie in Nevada   7. After years of reading exclusively literary fiction or non-fiction, I stumbled upon the Romance genre and am finding it very interesting and, often, a lot of fun. I'd love to share this experience...perhaps even with my (adventurous) book club. Any recommendations for a book within the romance genre that would make a good book club pick? She has never had to formally come out because no one has ever actually asked her about her sexuality and she cannot understand why her mother is so against her publicly announcing that she is, in fact, a lesbian.  Meg is smitten with Honey and feels it deeply that Honey hasn’t come out to the public.
