Bitcoin's security and reliability as a store of value are undeniable. However, its liquidity remained untapped for too long due to a lack of trustless bridges and native smart contract capabilities. As BTC is only native to Bitcoin's L1, any attempt to include it in DeFi relies on the trust assumptions of third party custodians that wrap it. Build On Bitcoin (BOB) aims to expand Bitcoin's functionality by integrating it with Ethereum's smart contract capabilities. BOB operates as an OP Stack L2 with a hybrid design incorporating ZKPs, Bitcoin staking, and Ethereum for data availability. By functioning as a rollup, BOB processes transactions off-chain and batches them for settlement on Bitcoin and Ethereum, significantly improving transaction speed and reducing costs compared to Bitcoin's base layer.Topics covered in this episode:Alexei's backgroundSetbacks for Bitcoin DeFiBitcoin bridgesBitVMBOB operators and trust assumptionsBOB architecture & Bitcoin stakingBitcoin LSTsThe future of Bitcoin DeFiEpisode links:Alexei Zamyatin on XBuild on Bitcoin on XSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. In today's piece, we're taking a close look at one of the latest innovations in the modular ecosystem: AggLayer, the new interoperability layer stemming from the Polygon team. As Ethereum scaling solutions continue to evolve, AggLayer offers a new approach to making cross-chain interactions smoother, more secure, and more scalable. But, is this the solution we are looking for? Is AggLayer competitive with Superchain? How will the modular community align on a single solution to unify the ecosystem? We sat down with David Silverman, VP of Product at Polygon, who shared some fascinating insights during his interview on The Rollup podcast. He traced Polygon's journey from its early PoS chain, through the launch of zkEVM, to its current focus on building AggLayer—a shared bridge model that emphasizes scaling and native interoperability. One of the core ideas that David mentioned about AggLayer is its ability to support multiple rollup stacks and consensus mechanisms while maintaining security through its "pessimistic proof" model. David pointed out how, in comparison to models like OP Stack's Superchain, AggLayer is designed to work seamlessly across various ecosystems without locking developers into a single protocol. It got spicy...and we pushed back on the security model. However, David reaffirmed that security is a major focus. While AggLayer can ensure chains don't rug one another, users are still responsible for ensuring the security of the individual chains they interact with. This clear boundary of security guarantees sets AggLayer apart, offering builders confidence while still keeping flexibility. Finally, we asked the pressing question of "When mainnet?" and luckily got some alpha from David on the upcoming roadmap for AggLayer. Another great episode from NYC during our chain abstraction focused marathon. Enjoy.

with @jinglejamOP @eddylazzarin @rhhackettHello and welcome to web3 with a16z, a show about building the next era of the internet by the team at a16z crypto, that includes me, host Robert Hackett.Today's episode features Jing Wang, CEO and executive director of the Optimism Foundation, along with a16z crypto CTO Eddy Lazzarin. We discuss the peculiarities of open source software — including the incentives that bind contributors together, tradeoffs between the freedom to customize versus sticking to standards, and the challenges in setting up and running a foundationWe also cover the nuances of governance and accountability, the importance of vibes, the indispensability of shipping products (versus debating roadmaps), and, the vision behind the so-called “superchain”.As head of the Optimism Foundation, Wang helps stewards the Optimism collective — a band of decentralized companies, communities, contributors, and others who are using a suite of open source software – called the OP Stack — to scale the Ethereum blockchain network. The OP Stack also powers a number of popular "layer two" rollups — including Base, which we covered in last week's episode with its creator and lead, Coinbase's head of protocols Jesse Pollak.Be sure also to check out the a16z crypto YouTube channel for video podcast episodes, as well as talks from our recent startup accelerator programs CSX featuring Jing, Optimism co-founder Karl Floersch, and more.Resources for references in this episode:More on Optimism: open source code software licensesthe OP StackMore on the Optimism superchain collective, including:Coinbase's BaseRedstoneWorldcoin"Understanding Dencun, the biggest upgrade to Ethereum since The Merge" by Noah Citron and Valeria Nikolaenko (a16z crypto, March 2024)More on Ethereum upgrade EIP-4844 (Github)"Layer 2, rollups, and building onchain (with Base)" by Jesse Pollak, Eddy Lazzarin, and Robert Hackett (a16z crypto, May 2024)"Composability is to software as compound interest is to finance" by Chris Dixon (a16z crypto, October 2021)"The Nature of the Firm" by Ronald Coase (Economica, November 1937)"Weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation" [Intro 6.2 footnote] (Congress.gov)As a reminder none of the following should be taken as tax, business, legal, or investment advice. Ethereum's long-awaited Dencun upgrade finally went live this week, and many L2s immediately saw their transaction fees fall dramatically, as was the intention. Among them was the Coinbase-incubated Base, which was created by Jesse Pollak. Pollak joined Unchained to discuss the impact Dencun was having on Base; how he thinks Layer 1s and Layer 2s will start to differ from one another and eventually spawn a multitude of specialized Layer 3s; his response to criticisms of the increasing use of Layer 2s, what he's focusing on now, and why he supports using the word “onchain” over “crypto” or “web3.” Show highlights: The problem that Dencun is trying to solve The benefits of blobs and blobspace How Dencun has already reduced Base's fees, but also increased its transactions How Jesse thinks Layer 1s and Layer 2s will start to become differentiated from each other The rise of Layer 3s How Jesse addresses criticisms of fragmentation and centralization arising from the increasing use of Layer 2s Why Jesse is particularly excited about two features of the Dencun upgrade—transient storage and increased composability between L1s and L2s What Jesse and the Base team are focusing on now Why Jesse thinks that “onchain” is a better word to describe the industry than “crypto” or “blockchain” or “web3” Thank you to our sponsors! iTrustCapital Polkadot Uniswap Guest Jesse Pollak, creator of Base at Coinbase Previous appearances: The Chopping Block: All About That Base With Jesse Pollak Links Recent coverage on Unchained of the Dencun Upgrade and Base: Dencun Day One: Ethereum Layer 2 Networks See Drastic Drop in Transaction Fees Ethereum Completes Milestone Dencun Upgrade, Which Should Substantially Reduce Fees How Much Will the Dencun Upgrade Really Reduce Ethereum Layer 2 Fees By? Base creator Jesse Pollak argues that much cheaper Layer 2 transactions, as well as other developments, will enable the creation of multitudes of specialized Layer 3s that are deeply connected to the onchain economy.
