Jealousy thrives in the world of artists and musicians. One Sun Sentinel article details the heated rivalry between R&B supergroups New Edition and Guy at the 1989 Superfest in Greensboro, NC. A brawl broke out on stage, causing the whole show to be suspended for an hour. A crew member from New Edition ended up dead. All of the senseless violence was a direct result of jealousy. This Saturday, the longest running disability film festival in the world begins. Whether online or in person, you're sure to see diverse, unabashed and engaging cinema. In the two decades of Pushing Limits, we've watched the ethos of disability organizing from the 1970s be embraced by a new generation of disabled cultural workers and organizations. Superfest's parent, the Longmore Institute at S.F. State, with its new disability cultural center is one keeper of these flames. Our guest this week, Dr. Emily Beitiks, interim director for the Longmore Institute, has seen these happy developments close and personal. Eddie Ytuarte hosts. SUPERFEST Superfest Disability Film Festival is coming October 17-20, and whether you are joining in person in the Bay Area or online anywhere in the world, you need to be a part of it! Superfest is the longest running disability film festival in the world. Since 1970, it has celebrated cinema that portrays disability through a diverse, unabashed and engaging lens, and we can't wait to come together as a community to take in this much-loved disability cultural event for its 38th festival, hybrid for the second year, with new levels of access. EMILY BEITIKS: Emily Beitiks received a Ph.D. in American Studies with a focus in Disability Studies at the University of Minnesota. She has served as adjunct faculty at five universities, centering disability studies in her curriculum. Dr. Emily Beitiks From 2012 to the present, she has worked at the Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State University, serving as Interim Director for three years. While there, she developed her praxis as a scholar-activist of disability to promote creative forms of access for the arts and generate spaces that promote disability culture, serving as project director for a touring exhibition “Patient No More,” and serving as co-director of Superfest Disability Film Festival. Marina Salman (she/her) is the SOAR (SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery) Case Manager in the Community Reintegration Department at Access Living. In 2018, Marina completed a master's degree in counseling psychology. Her current research and advocacy work includes addressing disability and ableism in the healthcare and justice system, as well as incorporating Independent Living philosophy in all aspects of life. Marina is of Middle Eastern descent, enjoys working out at the gym, and is an advent Chicago Bears fan. Allie Cannington (they/she) Allie Cannington (they/she) is a white, jewish, queer, disabled activist and organizer. For over 15 years, they have organized people with disabilities on local, state, and national levels for over ten years – centering on people with disabilities who live at the margins, including LGBTQIA, Black, Indigenous, people of color, low/no income, and youth with disabilities. Currently, Allie lives in Denver, Colorado and is an active member of Jewish Voice for Peace Denver/Boulder chapter. Tatiana Lee is an award-winning actress, international model and Hollywood influencer. She serves as a Hollywood Inclusion Associate at RespectAbility, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to fight stigmas and advance opportunities so people with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of community. Growing up in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, Lee felt unseen in popular media – and when she told people of her ambitions to be an actress and model, they laughed. Notwithstanding, Lee moved to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career. She learned how to harness social media's power to speak boldly about accessibility and inclusion in mass media, due to the lack of access and opportunities for herself and others with disabilities. She is the voice behind the Accessible Hollywood brand, which highlights her journey as an actress, model and lifestyle influencer born with Spina Bifida. She quickly has become a sought-after speaker for brands like Apple, Bank of America, Human Rights Watch and the LA Film Festival, to name a few. Lee was in one of Apple's first ad campaigns featuring people with disabilities using Apple's accessible features and products. Some of Lee's credits include “Stand Up,” which premieres at Superfest during fall 2020 and “Coffee with Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.” She also has appeared in modeling campaigns for Target, Zappos, Apple and more. She was the 2018 recipient of the Reeves Acting Scholarship from The Christopher & Dana Reeves Foundation for her contribution to further disability inclusion in film and media. Currently working at RespectAbility, Lee consults on a variety of TV and film projects, conducts training for studios and production companies including NBCUniversal, Netflix and The Walt Disney Company, and assists with RespectAbility's Lab for Entertainment Professionals with Disabilities. Verton R. Banks is best known as the diligent medical intern Vernon on the critically acclaimed HBO comedy Getting On starring Laurie Metcalf, Niecy Nash, and Alex Borstein. Verton appeared in 10 episodes over the course of two seasons. Other notable TV appearances include NBC's ER, FX's Married, ABC Family's Mystery Girls and TBS' Ground Floor. Verton is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and a graduate of UCLA . And how we represent and reflect people in films matters. Expert Cathy Kudlick joins Hans and I for a discussion about the film landscape as it stands today. She walks us through the craft audio descriptions and shares her insight about tapping into the power of portraying people or experiences on film. What needs to change? What can filmmakers do to make accessibility a key part of the filmmaking process and why does it matter? How can we as film fanatics and movie-goers hold filmmakers to a standard of storytelling that represent folks with disabilities with greater integrity? Listen in!

We talk with Ross Turnbull, the creator of the movie Terminal Device, an autobiographical essay and an inquiry into cinematic representation. Refracted through pop cultural images, the director tells his story as a man with a hook watching movie images of others with this particular prosthesis.  He's in the studio with Alex Locust, also an amputee and one of the organizers of Superfest, the bay area's premier disability film fest.
