Alan Kohler has spent more than 50 years at the centre of Australian financial journalism — and few people alive have watched this country's booms, busts, and policy shifts with more clarity. In this conversation, Mark and Alan trace the arc of Australian capitalism from the Poseidon nickel boom of 1969 through to the rise of Elon Musk and the AI era. Alan draws striking parallels between the charismatic deal-makers of the 1980s — Bond, Elliott, Skase — and the story-sellers of today, and explains why irrational exuberance always takes longer to unravel than anyone expects. He also gives a frank assessment of what Australian housing policy has got wrong, why superannuation remains the country's greatest economic achievement, and what capital gains tax reform should actually look like. We speak about: • The Poseidon nickel boom and what it taught a 17-year-old copy boy about markets • Why every major financial boom has a charismatic figure selling an irresistible story • Elon Musk, SpaceX, and whether a loss-making $2 trillion company makes any sense • How Basel banking rules quietly turned Australian banks into mortgage lenders • The 1999 capital gains tax change that accidentally supercharged the housing market • Paul Keating, superannuation, and the policy Alan considers Australia's greatest achievement • Lang Hancock, iron ore, and what real Australian entrepreneurialism looks like Join my exclusive Mentored+ community: https://mentored.com.au/become-a-member/ Subscribe to the Mentored newsletter here: https://the-mentored-platform-pty-ltd.myklpages.com/l/WWJGc5 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this long-awaited episode, three of Her Majesty's finest subjects discuss the generational change that was the 1996 Australian Federal Election. Some time back, we covered the unloseable election - John Hewson being undone by a birthday cake. Well, more specifically, a question about a birthday cake. That was 1993, and little did we know that we were about to witness a the beginning of a generational change in Australian politics. Paul Keating wins the unwinnable election in 1993, in 1994 John Hewson loses a challenge to his position as opposition leader and two years later retires from politics altogether, Alexander Downer becomes Opposition Leader in 1994 with deputy Peter Costello. Unfortunately, poor polls, bad political judgement and a bad joke about domestic violence sees him step down The things that batter. And in 1995, a resurgent John Howard takes the reigns with Costello as deputy. One of the first things Howard does is unify the party - one of Alexander Downer's most famous quotes is that he would personally kneecap anyone who undermined Howard's attempt at winning PM. Walker sits down with Paul Keating from Primal to talk about where Nostr is three years after Nostrica, why adoption has been slower than the early hype suggested, and why that may have been a good thing. They explore Primal's vision, creator onboarding, Bitcoin zaps as a native internet business model, circular Bitcoin economies like Bitcoin Jungle, the coming wave of Nostr apps that hide the protocol from end users, and why human-first, sovereignty-preserving social tools matter more than ever in an age of AI slop, algorithmic addiction, and centralized digital identity. Key topics discussed How Nostr has matured since Nostrica and why the ecosystem is stronger now than during the first hype wave Primal's roadmap, including polls, better creator tooling, smoother onboarding, and a broader vision for healthier social media Why Bitcoin zaps and Nostr create a fundamentally better creator economy than legacy platforms or “Web3” token schemes The real-world circular Bitcoin economy in Bitcoin Jungle and what it shows about living on a Bitcoin standard Why Nostr may become increasingly important as AI-generated slop, censorship, surveillance, and centralized identity systems accelerate DiVine vs AI Slop: Using proof-of-human posting to fight the rise of AI-generated content online.
Paul Keating is a freedom-tech advocate working with Daylight Computers and Primal, a Bitcoin-powered decentralized social platform. After a health crisis reshaped his worldview, Paul left the conventional path to build a sovereign life in the Costa Rican jungle. We explore how Bitcoin reshaped his understanding of money, why decentralized speech matters in an age of censorship, and how “opting out” of legacy systems can restore agency over your finances, identity, and future. Discover how reclaiming ownership of your money, digital presence, and community can be a peaceful rebellion in a world increasingly designed for control.
As I watch Chris Hipkins, presumably gleefully, mess about with the India Free Trade deal, I'm reminded this is not the Labour Party that did the FTA with China. Hipkins is no Helen Clark and in that is a great sadness. For all those who occasionally contact me and ask of the possibility of a so-called “grand coalition” —a relationship between the Labour and National parties— before you ask, next time look at the way Hipkins plays these games and there is your answer. Even in areas of broad agreement, they still can't act like grownups. It's also a lesson in name vs substance. The Labour Party of the past few years is nothing like Labour of the late 90's and early 2000's. That was a centrist version. Yes, they still handed out free money to people like students to bribe them in election year. But the rest of the time they actually ran the economy in growth. Compared to Barbara Edmonds, Michael Cullen was a conservative. In the early parts of 1984 Labour, with David Lange, was similar, and here is your irony that Hipkins fails to recognise: when Labour are, broadly speaking, middle of the road they are actually popular. Ask Bob Hawke or Paul Keating or Tony Blair – centrist Labour is successful Labour. By the time you take modern Labour with Hipkins and Sepuloni, and add the Greens in the mix, you are seeing the left wing “group think” that not only keeps them out of office, but leads to the sort of game playing we have with an FTA. Yes, the Government probably shouldn't have to rely on them and for all the games Labour plays, New Zealand First is just as bad with their xenophobic nonsense. But Labour once had a global view. It's not like the Chinese weren't thought of with great suspicion prior to 2008. But the bigger picture was at play. The realisation that large countries and their economies could be good for everyone was a driving force. What Labour would do well to do is put this country first. Not score points, not look like children, and not pretend they actually had anything to do with negotiating this thing at all. FTAs are big picture, not a three-year electoral cycle game. I don't think I'm alone in wishing there were more adults in the room. Labour 1999-2008 put the current lot to shame. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dans cette dernière partie, on s'intéresse à la relation très étroite que bob Hawke entretient avec son ministre des Finances puis successeur, Paul Keating, ainsi qu'aux causes qu'il a défendu après s'être retiré de la politique.

We have all seen it. I have seen it a good number of times. The café that was exemplary, sold, the new owner changes the menu, brings in a few kids to serve, and then wonders why six months later they are out of business. As the hospitality people yet again told their tale of woe, and do not get me wrong, times have been tight and many an outlet has struggled, but as the new numbers got rolled out for the obligatory headline, it is probably time to get a bit honest about a sector that at times is its own worst enemy. In the past 12 months, 2,564 hospitality outlets have closed. That's an increase of 19%. As a stat it's miserable. But ask yourself this: are all the cafes gone? No. So is it possible we were over-cafe'd? Is part of the problem with hospitality the fact anyone can join? You simply write a cheque, put an apron on, and you are in the hospitality game. Do you know what you are doing? Are you interested in excelling or are you looking for an easy job and an easy job for your family? Are you providing something new, or better, or different, or just adding to the collection of people who pedal paninis and bowls of cappuccino? We talk a lot about the two step, or two stage, economy. Normally it's rural vs urban, Auckland vs Queenstown. But there is another two step story: the people who are good at what they do and those who aren't. This doesn't just apply to hospitality. But hospitality is the standout example because it is one of those sectors where anyone can join and you can be anything from exceptional to useless, and a lot of things in-between. In 1990 Paul Keating, then Australian Treasurer, famously said this is the recession we had to have. Australia had not known a recession and had always been the lucky country. But part of the argument was a recession cleans out the hopeless. It tidies an economy up. The strong survive because they hustle and adjust. The weak wither and die and out of the renewal starts something afresh. A lot of people liquidating only tells you a fraction of the story and the story is supposed to make you feel bad. It shouldn't. It's life. If you are good and determined and work hard in hospitality or anywhere else, you'll be fine. If you are really determined, you will be more than fine. Max Pearson presents a collection of the week's Witness History interviews from the BBC World Service. We discuss the 1992 speech given by Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating, in which he acknowledged the moral responsibility his government should bear for the horrors committed against Indigenous Australians, with our guest Dr Rebe Taylor from Tasmania University. We also look at two female orators from opposite ends of the political spectrum: Eva Peron, also known as Evita, from right-wing Argentina and Dolores Ibárruri, who was a communist and anti-fascist fighter in the Spanish Civil War. There are also two speeches from the USA, one which is remembered as one of the great presidential speeches of all time and another which help to change the view of AIDS in the country.Contributors: Don Watson - who wrote Paul Keating's Redfern speech in 1992.Dr Rebe Taylor - Australian historian from the University of Tasmania.Archive of Eva Peron - former first lady of Argentina. On 10 December 1992, Australia's Prime Minister, Paul Keating, addressed a crowd in a Sydney suburb called Redfern, to mark the UN's International Year of the World's Indigenous People. What started as a low-key affair, is remembered as one of the most powerful speeches in Australian history. It was the first time an Australian Prime Minister took moral responsibility for the horrors committed against Indigenous Australians. The speech received significant backlash, but it's often credited with paving the way for a later Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, to issue a formal apology to Indigenous Australians. In 2007, ABC radio listeners voted it the third most unforgettable speech in history behind Martin Luther King's 'I have a dream' speech and Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Don Watson wrote the speech. He speaks to Ben Henderson.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. On this episode of Property Investing Insights with Right Property Group, Victor and Reshmi Kumar sit down with Phil Tarrant to analyse the impact of negative gearing reforms on the property market and how investors can build their knowledge base to develop a long-term financial plan. Particularly, the podcast looks at unintended consequences of tax reforms, including the adverse impacts observed when negative gearing was abolished under Paul Keating, resulting in a 20 per cent spike on rents. The episode then examines the structural, financial and psychological barriers faced by investors. The trio also discuss the need for investors to expand their knowledge base, including through the Right Property Group's “Right on Track events”, to network with other investors and ensure that they continue to align acquisition with strategic consolidation.

For many Labor insiders, both in Canberra and across the country, the carping from the sidelines is an annoying distraction they wish would go away. But there are some within the Albanese government who say the comments are providing the debate and contestability that the “broken” party sorely lacks. Today, special correspondent in Canberra for The Saturday Paper Jason Koutsoukis on Labor's war with its old guard.
