In this episode, Matthew sits down with artist, activist, and author Mary Fisher (@maryfisher), whose landmark 1992 speech at the Republican National Convention changed the face of AIDS awareness and made her a global icon of truth-telling and compassion. Now in a new chapter of her life, Mary reflects on what it means to grieve not just people, but old lives, family, identity, and the loss of a place in the world. Together, she and Matthew explore how we rebuild, find chosen family, use creativity to heal, and speak up after a lifetime of being told to stay quiet. This conversation is for anyone feeling disconnected, disempowered, or unsure of how to move forward when life has drastically changed. Mary's words are a reminder that it's never too late to reinvent your life, speak your truth, and create beauty from pain. Topics Covered: The distinction between grief and depression—and how naming grief gave Mary her life back What it feels like to lose family who are still alive, and how to navigate that emotional terrain How to build a chosen family when your biological one isn't safe or supportive The courage behind Mary's 1992 speech and how mortality shifted her priorities Why radical honesty can be the foundation for deep connection Finding the right level of vulnerability early in relationships How to let go of the fantasy of who someone was “supposed to be” Creating through pain—how art and creativity became her medicine Learning to speak up after a lifetime of silence, guilt, and being told to “be a good girl” How to rewire your inner voice and create safety to be heard Understanding the difference between connection and one-sided emotional dependence in relationships Resources & Links: Mary Fisher's new book: Uneasy Silence Mary's website: MaryFisher.com Instagram: @maryfisherart Project Angel Food (charity supported by Mary's book): angelfood.org Matthew AI (24/7 coaching): AskMH.com Join our retreat in October: MHRetreat.com

Max Pearson presents a collection of the week's Witness History interviews from the BBC World Service. We discuss the 1992 speech given by Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating, in which he acknowledged the moral responsibility his government should bear for the horrors committed against Indigenous Australians, with our guest Dr Rebe Taylor from Tasmania University. We also look at two female orators from opposite ends of the political spectrum: Eva Peron, also known as Evita, from right-wing Argentina and Dolores Ibárruri, who was a communist and anti-fascist fighter in the Spanish Civil War. There are also two speeches from the USA, one which is remembered as one of the great presidential speeches of all time and another which help to change the view of AIDS in the country.Contributors: Don Watson - who wrote Paul Keating's Redfern speech in 1992.Dr Rebe Taylor - Australian historian from the University of Tasmania.Archive of Eva Peron - former first lady of Argentina. When Mary Fisher was diagnosed with HIV in 1991 she did not represent the typical stereotype of someone HIV-positive. She was white, heterosexual and contracted the disease in marriage. She used her platform at the Republican National Convention in Texas in 1992 to try and change people's treatment of those carrying the Aids virus. The speech was broadcast live to millions of people via the major US TV outlets. She argued that she did not want her sons, aged four and two, to face stigma from the "whisper of Aids" once she had died. It is ranked as one of the most important speeches in the US in the 20th Century. Mary Fisher recalls the moment she delivered the speech to Josephine McDermott.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Mary Fisher delivers her speech in 1992. Most 80 year old men you find sitting comfortably in a recliner surrounded by their grandchildren telling stories of adventures long past. Jim Fisher is not one of those 80 year old men. Jim is still seeking adventures, still climbing mountains and still living his life to the fullest. In 2021, 29029 Alumni Chuck Fisher invited his parents to climb with him in Snowbasin that year. Jim and Mary Fisher were 78 almost 79 years old when they pressed that red registration button. Jim was an instant celebrity on the mountain. He was the source of a new kind of inspiration in our community. Jim was almost 80 years old but Jim was climbing. He didn't complain. He didn't stop. We all watched in awe as he chatted and smiled his way step after step up and down those slopes. 2021 Snowbasin was a challenge for many reasons for Jim and when he left without a red hat a new fire burned inside of him. He had to come back. He needed to find his Everest. And oh did he come back…….. In June 2022 at the start of our 29029 event season, we invited Jim to speak to our community on a special zoom call. Jim's message and motivation is just too good not to share with the world. We hope you are as inspired as we are by Jim Fisher. We hope his message resonates to help you keep climbing your own mountains and seeking out new summits whenever you can….regardless of the birthday you are celebrating this year! “Mary Fisher lived in a palace by the sea.” We watched She-Devil (1989) with the hilarious H. Alan Scott aka Sadie Pines and… is that a gummy bear in your hair? The masses may have been sleeping on this camp classic for the past 35 years but, as usual, the gays know whats up. She-Devil was Meryl Streep's first real entry into comedy and her portrayal of the Jackie Collins-esque Mary Fisher is pure camp. Roseanne Barr, fresh off the first season of her hit sitcom, is the titular She-Devil but time and attitudes have changed and her character Ruth Patchett is clearly the real hero. And was it just us, or was nerdy Ed Begley Jr. secretly hot? Something about that tall drink of water in a barely there pink bath towel definitely unlocked a core memory in our tiny queer brains. Throw in legendary Linda Hunt, and cameos from Robin Leech, Deborah Rush and the one and only Sally Jessy Raphael and you've got yourself a bonafide gay classic. I'm Christy Shriver, and we're here to discuss books that have changed the world and have changed us. I'm Garry Shriver and this is the How to Love Lit Podcast. Last episode we concluded our series on George Bernard Shaw, a man who believed art should be didactic. This week we explore another artist, Mary Fisher, who also has something important to say. Fisher advocates through her sculptures, quilts and textiles, but also through her speeches. She has authored six books, received honorary doctorates and has traveled around the world as a Special Representative of the United Nations. Fisher first emerged into the American national spotlight on August 19 in 1992 when she ascended to the podium in Houston, TX at the 1992 Republican National Convention. She spoke for ten minutes in the middle of the day long before the famous keynote politicians of the evening. She was not is a politician. She stood before the crowd of partisan delegates as the daughter of a wealthy and powerful fundraiser. She was an adviser to former president Ford, but that was not why she was there. She was there to announce that she, like Rock Hudson, Magic Johnson and Freddie Mercury and thousands of others was HIV positive. Her speech, “A Whisper of AIDS”, rocked not just the stunned onlookers from within the hall, but also the millions who watched the broadcast on TV. It has been ranked by Oxford Press as one of the 100 Best American Speeches of the 20th Century. Today we will read her remarkable speech, discuss the rhetorical situation in which is was delivered, and the impact Fisher has made on this important global issue. If you've listened to our discussions of other non-fiction pieces, you may have heard us reference Aristotle, the father of rhetoric in the West. He has informed speakers and writers for thousands of years, literally. According to Aristotle, all speakers must do three essential things do to be effective. First, we must establish our credibility. When anyone gets up to speak whether you realize it or not, you're going to ask yourself why should I believe what you have to say? Secondly, we must open the hearts of our listeners. They must not just hear words but be moved to act. Thirdly, we must create a line of reasoning that makes sense. Our reasons must connect with each other and add up to a conclusion that compels us to move forward in the direction provided by the speaker. These three elements constitute what many call the rhetorical triangle. It's easy to understand what to, much harder to pull it off. The Ancient Greeks called it ethos, pathos, logos, and the greatest practioners in the world have moved the human race, to do great things as well as to commit great atrocities just through words. Today, especially as we look at this extremely impactful speech, we need to discuss another ancient rhetorical concept. The term is “Kairos” or time. The Greeks used it not to mean the clock as in chronology but to mean timeliness, the timing of the speech - the concept of timeliness of something. Of course, we understand this all the time, how many times have you heard someone say, “I don't know if this is the right time to tell you…and then they drop a bombshell”. We intuitively know that sometimes the timing of something makes or breaks the argument. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Muhammad has not only been at the center of Muslims discussions of prophethood but he has also been the focus for many Christians as well. In The Christian Encounter with Muhammad: How Theologians have Interpreted the Prophet (Bloomsbury, 2020), Charles Tieszen, Ph.d., University of Birmingham, introduces a wide variety of depictions throughout history and assesses how Muhammad is used in the context of differing Christian doctrinal and social issues. His examples range from medieval Christian communities writing Syriac, to those living in Al-Andalus, to west Africa, and more. Across these case studies Tieszen seeks to understand how the Prophet was used to support, justify, or contest various positions both within Christian debates and broader inter-religious exchanges. In our conversation we discuss Christian writings about Muhammad from late antiquity to the modern times, narratives about the Christian Monk Bahira, John of Damascus, early Syriac Texts, the martyr movement of Cordoba, Latin depictions of the Prophet, Christian letters addressed to Muslims, Mary Fisher the English Quaker who traveled to Ottoman Turkey, Samuel Ajayi Crowther the Yoruba convert and west African Christian missionary, Professor of World Christianity Lamin Sanneh, and what these discussions tell us about Christian-Muslim relations. Kristian Petersen is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy & Religious Studies at Old Dominion University. Mary Fisher, Mary Vincent, and Jean Rose – affectionately known around town as part of The Scarecrow Ladies - talk about the history of Buchanan Scarecrow Charities and how a small fundraising project turned into a time-honored tradition and an annual crowd favorite for locals and visitors alike. Celebrating their 15th fall of turning our downtown into Scarecrow City, the ladies share their favorite stories about how they come up with ideas, how they get their materials, and what goes into this year-round production. We also reminisce about the contributions of their current and former members and learn why this is one of the most involved and connected groups in Buchanan with an impressive track record of giving back. We chat about the connection between Robotics and Scarecrows and even get a status update of their exciting new building project.
This week Eugene and Matt have the privilege and pleasure to speak with Aotearoa/New Zealand Para swimmer Mary Fisher! Prior to her retirement from the structure, rigor, and scrutiny of high performance sport in 2018, Mary won Gold at the London and Rio Paralympics in world-record times. After that, Mary chose to do something relaxing, like run the Tarawera 87 km. Eugene and Matt speak to Mary after her recent running of the (completely heckers) WUU2K, which Mary finished with her guide, Carrie Buckmaster. We speak to Mary about her love of the trails, advocacy and inclusion in sport, and how trail running can become more accessible. This conversation transcends “inspiration”, rather being a conversation with a person who enjoys trail running and has the mindset of an elite athlete who happens to have a visual impairment. And a bunch of gold medals. We have a great Greatest Run Ever and Matt rants a bit about how good late 90's Swedish power-pop is. Enjoy.
Rarely is the question, “no seriously, how do I do this?” more applicable than when looking around our crowded messy houses, hoping to get on top of the chaos. On this week’s episode we invite Mary Fisher, a professional organizer and founder of Sort and Release, to share with us how organization not only keeps her mess manageable, but how it helped her through an unexpected and harrowing season of trial. She shares the tenants of her T.A.C.K.L.E. methodology and invites us to start taking charge of our space.
In this episode, we discuss the tenancy tribunal ruling between Mary Fisher, a Wellington-based landlord and her tenants. Ms Fisher's tenants caused intentional damage and had to pay over $9.1k to cover the damage and other infringements. We discuss what happened, what the landlord did right and wrong, and what you can learn as property investors from the ruling. Click here to read the ruling yourself. We also announce that we will host property investment dinners in Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, with 10 investors (+ partners) at each. To enter the draw, follow us on instagram, share the podcast on your story and leave us a review. Then take a screenshot and send it to podcast@opespartners.co.nz.

For the message, Elijah read from Acts 2 & 3 and reminded us that the Holy Spirit can inspire us to do things that don’t make any sense. Early Quakers like Solomon Eccles and Mary Fisher are examples of this — Solomon made shoes during a worship service and Mary went to visit the Sultan of Turkey! While sitting in open worship a few months ago, Elijah resisted the leading to make a sign of the cross. When he opened his eyes, the person sitting next to him made a sign of the cross. Open worship should invite us to do the unexpected. How do you respond to the voice of God? How do you respond to those around you when they follow their leading?
On Extra Time this week, Canterbury prepares to farewell two of its greatest All Blacks when they take on Argentina in Christchurch. It's been a horror week for New Zealand Football after the under 23 men's national side was disqualified from the Pacific Games. Three Black Caps including captain Brendon McCullum are owed thousands of dollars as two teams are expelled from Inidan Premier League. It's a welcome return to the Silver Ferns World Cup team for midcourter Grace Rasmussen and we hear from New Zealand swimmers Lauren Boyle and Mary Fisher.

Constable viewed this scene at Bowleaze Cove in Weymouth Bay as expressive of his own feelings and personal associations. He connected the tempestuous weather with the death of Captain John Wordsworth, the poet’s brother and his friend Mary Fisher’s cousin, who drowned near this cove with all two hundred of his crew in 1805. C.R. Leslie’s wife saw the mezzotint at Constable’s home in Charlotte Street, London, and asked if she could have it. Constable sent it to her the following day suggesting that she should: apply to it the lines of Wordsworth – ‘that sea in anger/ and that dismal shoar’. I think of ‘Wordsworth’ for on that spot, perished his brother in the wreck of the Abergavenny (Beckett III, pp. 28–29). In the list of contents for English Landscape this mezzotint was called Weymouth Bay, Dorset. – Tempestuous Evening. Lucas had begun work on this plate by January 1830 – as an impression in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, is dated ‘30 January 1830’ (Tate 1991, p. 349), – basing it on the large oil painting Weymouth Bay c.1819/1830 . He made at least five progress proof variations before the published state, of which this is the third. During the proofing, highlights on the waves and boat were added and the sky lightened above the cliff and on the left. This proof was printed before three gulls were added on the left. Heysen wrote: ‘The news of the two prints – … Weymouth Bay – excited me and you may be sure I shall await their arrival with impatience’ (Heysen, 1948?, NLA MS 5073/1/7190); and now for the Weymouth Bay which is an extremely fine & rich early proof – I like it immensely & am glad to have it. Looks as if its just come off the press – later on I must have a complete proof with its final … with the driving rain which completes the compos & so [relieves?] the large dark space to the left – and the big space of dark dividing the composition in two is somewhat relieved by the introduction of more forms & yet this would also – lessen the dramatic moment (ibid., 23 February 1948, NLA MS 5073/1/5594).
