One of the things about life and business is there are always going to be setbacks and adversity. Our lives will be full of challenges and things to overcome. And the degree to which we experience success in business, and indeed life, is related to our ability to overcome these obstacles, these hurdles, these setbacks. And if we don't already have this skill set, we've got to develop that skill set and build resilience into the way we approach life.  In today's episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast, Dr. Jesse Green is joined by Rodney Cottam. Rocket Rod Cottam has resilience in spades. Rodney is an ex-military man of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment who loves to run — and whose love of running has helped him overcome some pretty major challenges.  In 2004, Rodney was in a serious motor vehicle accident, sustaining several injuries including a spinal injury, fractured pelvis, broken ribs, punctured lung and multiple lacerations. After two 10-hour surgeries and 12 months of treatment, his long-term prognosis caused by spinal nerve damage is a condition called Brachial Plexus Palsy, which has left Rodney permanently paralysed in his left arm.  In a split second, Rodney went from being an elite soldier, in the best physical shape possible, to completely losing all movement and feeling in one arm, from shoulder to fingertips. www.runrocketrun.com Rodney says, “I'd always loved running, but after the accident it was a challenge as I had no strength or support in my shoulder joint. Over time, I found my balance and rhythm, transitioning from an elliptical machine to a treadmill, then to road and trail running.”  Now Rodney runs at least five days and up to 100kms per week, and in October 2024, he will run his third trail run challenge in support of Invictus Australia. This year he will be running for 7 days, covering 560km.  The plan is to complete a major challenge each year and participate in ultra-trail events in Australia and around the world under a project called Run Rocket Run. “When we believe in ourselves, we are capable of so much more than we think. We can push ourselves, physically and mentally, way past any perceived threshold. And this journey—this commitment to ourselves—is an incredibly special and rewarding one.” ~ Rodney Cottam [5:50] - The Military is much like your Dental Practice, it reveals more about you as a human than you possibly think. [8:03] - The day that changed everything. Rod was simply riding his motorcycle to work … [17:01] - Laying in hospital with a broken pelvis, punctured lung, broken ribs, an arm that's not doing what it used to do. How do you reevaluate your life, stay optimistic, and what do you think about your future? [23:01] - So how does a person who has had muscle surgically removed from his legs and attached to his paralysed arm, find relief and harmony in ultra-running? [25:34] - How the Invictus Games became Rod's purpose in life. [28:04] - What does resilience mean, and what does it take to be resilient in business?

Ben Cottam puts on full waterproofs to cross the causeway to Sunderland Point, in search of the grave of a black slave. There are 43 tidal islands around the UK, accessible just briefly each day along beguiling paths. Across the series, five writers journey across a favourite causeway to islands of refuge, pilgrimage, magic and glamour. Wheels spin wildly and Ben peers anxiously through mud-sprayed windscreen as he tries to drive to Sunderland. There is no real boundary between land and sea, the coastline as fluid as the tide. The danger signs escalate and he remembers tales of insidious rising waters, drilled into him as a child by coastguards from Morecambe Bay. He treks to what is uncomfortably called Sambo's grave, the resting place of young black slave. Abandoned there by a sea captain in the 18th century, Ben wonders how his own family might have treated him and is heartened to find fresh tributes marking a lost life. Producer: Sarah Bowen

The UKs last remaining coal fired power stations are about to close, bringing to an end our use of coal to produce our electricity. West Burton is one of the last coal fired power stations still generating electricity, and Andrew Carter was able to record a soundscape there before it falls silent for ever. West Burton was originally planned to close in September 2022, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine has extended its operations until the spring of 2023 to help with continuity of supply during the current energy crisis. Andrew's late father was a mechanical engineer, and he worked for the Central Electricity Generating Board, and fifty years ago he took Andrew around Cottam power station – which is just up the road from West Burton – and as you can imagine that tour around the plant left a big impression on an eight year old. As luck would have it, when Andrew was recording at West Burton, he was able to go to Cottam, which he discovered is now in the process of being demolished, and he walked again in his father's footsteps. It brought back a lot of poignant memories. This soundscape in an operating, and disused coal fired power station is Andrew's homage to his father, before these cathedrals of power are reduced to rubble, capturing, before it's too late, the sounds that would otherwise be lost to history. This week joining Hassan in the studio we have another northern carp fishing legend, former Mr Nutrabaits himself Bill Cottam.Bill has an incredible carp fishing pedigree dedicating himself to the sport in his early years fishing venues such as Lymm Dam before a meeting of carping minds led to a huge number of changes and would set the president for Bills' future work within the industry.  This meeting was with non-other than Tim Paisley. Before the two went onto form the mega bait brand that was Nutrabaits, himself and Tim headed to Darenth big lake as well as other venues such as the famous “Mangrove” Shropshire syndicate and Bill talks through his captures, experimentations and development over this time.Bill talks about the development of Nutrabaits as well as his team of incredible anglers which helped shape the most popular and best selling two baits namely Big Fish Mix and Trigga. Bill talks about his wider thoughts on bait and bait application all reflected by an approach which Bill uses to target big carp  to this very day. Bill goes onto give insight into the modern-day trends within the bait industry and how Nutrabaits chapter ended for him.Bill has had a huge amount of big fish success on the continent and he discusses his incredible annihilation of Luke Moffats Graviers lake where he accounted for all the lakes A team including “Scar” at over 80lbs+ , a fish which once held the world carp record. Bill also talks about capturing the Saussie Common at over 70lbs+ and how recently he has carried on his rich vein of big continental carp form catching five fish over 70lbs in just four session in France. There's no doubting Bills incredible achievements in terms of big carp and his mindset and desire to wait for the real big carp rather than catch numbers is second to none. Finally Bills shares his passion for writing including how he came to write his own book in amongst regularly writing articles for the likes of Carp Talk and to this very day Carpology magazine. He also talks about the modern scene and social media and how carp fishing is changing.Bill is a true carp fishing hall of famer, his love for the sport and knowledge for bait and how to single out big fish has put him firmly on the map as a true carping superstar that has survived the test of time and is still producing results to this very day. “The journey with the consumer should never stop,” says Jon Cottam, CEO, EMEA for Lift Brands. A strong sentiment, but how do you turn this into a tangible part of your franchise's make-up?  For Lift Brands, the trick is evolution. The pandemic hasn't suddenly transformed its concepts like Snap Fitness and 9Round into entirely new endeavors – instead, it has allowed them to naturally evolve and incorporate the likes of wearables and digital experiences into operations.  On this episode, we speak with Cottam about the wider Lift Brands portfolio, and really dig down into what makes a boutique brand like 9Round appealing in the increasingly competitive workout space. We also touch on the “elitist” feel that boutique concepts can sometimes possess, and how Lift Brands is doing everything it can to make fitness as welcoming as possible. Laurie Cottam is director and owner of Race Cottam Architects (RCA). Before he was an architect he toured the world singing with Oxford a capella singing group 'Out of the Blue.' A comparatively young leader in terms of his profession he is learning his trade alongside running the practice. He worked in London for a number of years before moving north to work alongside his father, Dave, one of the two founders of the practice. He describes how the narrowing window of opportunity for him to work alongside his father was a catalyst in making the move. He talks of his pride in both building a significant new secondary school in Sheffield and also in co-creating a new office for RCA with his colleagues. They worked hard to deliver something to which everyone felt they had contributed. His model for business is his own family, a place of belonging and a place where everyone is looking out for each other. One of the highlights of his last year was cooking Christmas dinner for the entire office. Everyone went out to pub and then when they returned, the office had been transformed into a winter wonderland! Balance is the key to his self-care regime, and social networks and exercise play a key role. He plans them into his week intentionally. He wants to be remembered as someone who saw the best in people and brought out the best in people.
