Dr. Phyllis Chesler is an Emerita Professor of Psychology and Women's Studies, a best-selling author, a legendary feminist leader, and a retired psychotherapist. Some of her most influential books are Women and Madness, Letters to a Young Feminist, Woman's Inhumanity to Woman, An American Bride in Kabul, Islamic Gender Apartheid: Exposing a Veiled War Against Women.Since 9/11, Dr. Chesler has focused on the rights of women, dissidents, and gays in the Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim communities; the rise of antisemitism/anti-Zionism, the demonization of Israel, the nature of terrorism, forced veiling, forced marriage, polygamy, and tribal psychology. Based on her four academic studies about honor killing, she has submitted affidavits for Muslim and ex-Muslim women who are seeking asylum or citizenship based on their credible belief that their families will honor kill them. In 2021-2022, Dr. Chesler co-led a team which rescued 400 women from Afghanistan. That work continues.

Do men and women now treat each other better than they once did? The feminist revolution peeled off the conventions that used to govern relations between the sexes. Yet man-woman relations seem never to have been in worse shape, the exaggerations from the #MeToo movement matched by the vileness of powerful men who've targeted vulnerable women.A New York firefighter once told me that his training required walking into the fire, since it's easier fought from inside. Walking into the fire is exactly what Phyllis Chesler does in her memoir . . .

“So, we landed in Kabul. This is a long time ago, long before the Taliban. And the airport official just smoothly took my American passport away and said, ‘No problem, madam. We'll return it to your family.' Never saw it again. And then I discovered that my father-in-law had three wives and 21 children.”Phyllis Chesler was born into a Jewish-American family. In 1961, at just 20 years of age, she traveled as a new bride with her husband to Afghanistan, where she entered into a traditional, Muslim household and was quickly stripped of her rights, seen as the property of her male family members. After finally escaping back to the United States, she became what she calls a “politically-incorrect feminist” who advocates for the rights of women and girls, and speaks out against “faux feminists” in the West, who have failed to support the Oct. 7 victims of Hamas's rape and sexual assault, and remain silent on the gender apartheid afflicting the Arab–Muslim world.“She called me up one day, maybe a year later, and said, ‘Do you want to help rescue girls and women from Afghanistan?' I said, ‘I've been waiting for this call my entire life.' And we did. That's what we did. It was a group of grassroots feminists who undertook that holy task, and we got 398 out with no help from the government,” says Dr. Chesler. “Israel is fighting the West's battle by itself—it really is—for the kinds of freedoms from tyranny that the West has been standing for, was founded for, and is now not holding on to.”Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and guests, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

Legendary feminist and author Dr. Phyllis Chesler warns that the Hamas attacks in Israel could eventually lead to World War III unless democratic powers "stand up to the world bully," the "axis of evil" of China, Russia, Iran, and select Arab countries. Her comments came in an interview for the Lean to the Left and Justice Counts podcasts, during which she strongly criticized women's organizations for failing to call out the antisemitism she contends is at the heart of the conflict."Iran's program is to get rid of the Western way of life; put women in body bags, execute homosexual men, have one religion under God--their God," she says. "If we don't stand up to the world bully, and I see World War III fast approaching, becoming more dreadfully visible. The Axis of Evil is China, Russia, Iran, selected Arab countries, Turkey. If we don't stop them in the Middle East," attacks on our shores could come.Dr. Chesler warns that Islamic terrorists "have their eye on the West and the Western way of life. This is so clear. What's also clear is the desire to appease in order to be bombed less, so that if we give Iran and Hamas, Israel, give it up, sacrifice the Jews, people love dead Jews, that's when we get pity, when we're dead, not when we're living and fighting back. Then maybe Iran will come for us later, maybe the battle on our shores will happen later. Students of World War II have taught us that the more you appease the bully, the higher the price is, the longer the war is."Dr. Chesler is a psychotherapist and Professor Emerita of Psychology at City University of New York. She has authored 20 books including A Politically Incorrect Feminist, The New Antisemitism, An American Bride in Kabul, and the groundbreaking Women & Madness. She has lectured and organized political, legal, religious, and human rights campaigns in the United States, Canada, Europe, Israel, Central Asia, and the Far East.Since 9/11, Dr. Chesler has focused on the rights of women, dissidents, and gays in the Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim communities; the rights of women in prison; the rise of anti-Semitism/anti-Zionism, the demonization of Israel, the nature of terrorism, forced veiling, forced marriage, polygamy, and tribal psychology. Dr. Chesler has conducted four studies about honor killing that have appeared in Middle East Quarterly. She has submitted affidavits for Muslim and ex-Muslim women who are seeking asylum or citizenship based on their credible belief that their families will honor kill them. In 2021-2022, Dr. Chesler co-led a team which rescued 400 women from Afghanistan. That work continues. During the podcast interview, she says Iran is funding terrorism around the world and wants to destroy Israel. And then, she asks, "who's next?""It's us," she says. "It's the West and our ideals and our way of life" that are in the crosshairs."Calling out women's organizations for demonstrating in favor of Hamas, Dr. Chesler says that if those women were in Gaza, the West Bank or Saudi Arabia, "they would be forcibly veiled. they would be forced, possibly by their families, to marry into polygamous families, even as children. They may not be allowed to have an education, and they could be honor killed for minor infractions." In fact, she contends, "they have joined a faxcist death cult with joy. In this episode of Perspectives, we speak with Lucas Richert, author of Break On Through: Radical Psychiatry and the American Counterculture. In his book, Lucas Richert discusses the impact of the countercultural movement on the theory and practice of psychiatry in the late 1960s and 1970s. Dr. Richert argues that broader societal developments—e.g., the civil rights movement, second-wave feminism, and the Vietnam War—pushed a large number of psychiatrists and mental health workers to radically reform the discipline. Psychiatrists and psychologists such as R.D. Laing, Claude Steiner, Phyllis Chesler, and Mike Michaelson all labored to improve mental health by identifying and critiquing the power dynamics involved in both the practice of therapy and society at-large. Richert ends with a fascinating and timely discussion on the use of psychedelic drugs in psychiatry in the 1960s and 1970s, and the ways in which mind-altering pharmaceuticals are making their way back into the heart of the field in the 21st century after decades of prohibition. Lucas Richert is Associate Professor and George Urdang Chair in the History of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. People who go to see Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor spend the entire evening waiting for the famous Mad Scene, to hear the soprano's incredible acrobatics, and to feel her intense emotional changes over the course of the lengthy showstopper. But the Mad Scene is more than a vocal showpiece: it's a window into what it means to lose touch with reality and the ways women's real-life challenges can go ignored or, even worse, pathologized as illness. In the opera, Lucia has no control of her life; her brother betrays her and forces her to marry a man she doesn't love. Alone and out of options, Lucia escapes in the only way she can: she murders her new husband and descends into madness. But how do we understand her crimes and hallucinations? And what can Lucia teach us about how we diagnose and treat mental health conditions today? Host Rhiannon Giddens and her guests dive into the history of women and madness, as well as the story of a woman living with bipolar disorder today. Soprano Natalie Dessay had a thriving career as a coloratura soprano before cashing in her opera chips and turning her talents to theater and jazz. When she sang the role of Lucia at the Met in 2011, she approached it a bit like a circus performer, adding physical challenges to match the vocal ones. Dr. Mary Ann Smart is a professor of music at UC Berkeley. As a grad student, she wrote her dissertation on mad scenes in 19th century opera, and she has since authored multiple books, including Siren Songs: Representations of Gender and Sexuality in Opera. One of the things that she finds most poignant about Lucia's Mad Scene is the fact that Donizetti spent the end of his life being treated for physical and mental illness.  Activist and writer Dr. Phyllis Chesler has written more than 20 books, including the seminal work, Women and Madness. Her work deals with freedom of speech and freedom of thought. Her recent books include Requiem for a Female Serial Killer, and her memoir An American Bride in Kabul. She believes writing is most definitely a form of madness. Author and attorney Melody Moezzi wrote Haldol and Hyacinths: A Bipolar Life in order to capture her experiences as an Iranian-American Muslim woman with bipolar disorder, and to help others with this condition feel less alone. She is an advocate for destigmatizing mental health conditions, and she believes that sometimes, what looks like madness can actually be a rational response to an irrational world.

This psychological crime thriller takes us inside the mind of a unique female serial killer, a prostitute who murdered seven adult men-a case with which the author was intimately involved. She speaks in Aileen Wuornos' voice, as well as in her own, and delivers an incisive, original, and dramatic portrait of a cognitively impaired, traumatized, and alcoholic woman who had endured so much pain in her short life. When she'd had enough, the results were deadly. This is a poignant, sometimes humorous, never-before-told behind-the-scenes tale. Wuornos' story is handled with great sensitivity, but also with realistic detachment by Chesler as she probes the telling moment, the telling phrase. Was Wuornos suffering from post-traumatic stress after a life lived on a "killing field?" Was she also "born evil?" So many prostitutes have been torture-murdered by serial killers-how did Wuornos, once prey, become a predator?Requiem for a Female Serial Killer will also haunt you. Feminists: What Were They Thinking Is a documentary about second wave feminism. It features stories from women involved in the feminist movement in the 1960s and 1970s and it definitely evokes emotion about the trials and tribulations women went through (AND ARE STILL GOING THROUGH) around our world. Feminists: What Were They Thinking is available on Netflix worldwide. A photographic project called Emergence by Cynthia McAdam brought together these incredible women and feminists and this documentary sees many of them looking back at their photos and sharing their stories. We highly recommend that you check it out!! Why? Because it's full of inspiration from women who were part of the grassroots movement. Women like Lily Tomlin, Z Budapest, Jane Fonda (BABE), Phyllis Chesler, Judy Chicago, and other incredible feminists. They talked about their experiences during the 60s & 70s and how second wave feminism was the first time women truly took responsibility for themselves. In this review episode, hosts Monika and Amanda talk about what emotions this documentary stirred up in them. Do feminists look different? What do you think? And did you know that Jane Fonda only learned in the last decade that "no" is a complete sentence? If Queen Fonda only learned this, and she's in her 80s, we still have a lot of work to do. What does feminism mean to us? It's easy for us both to be feminists and we are ready to fight for our right to own our space, some a bit more rebellious than others ;) We think, essentially, that second wave feminism was so important. Why do new wave feminists want to distance themselves from the early grassroots movements? We don't know! Feminists from all walks of life need to work together to achieve true gender parity. We need older feminists, black feminists, LGBTQ+ feminists, white feminists, feminists of colour, geek feminists, political feminists -- this list could GO ON - to fight the good fight. There are still hard things about being a woman in 2019. Just like there were hard things about being a woman in 1969. And hard things with first wave feminism back in the 20s. This is why we still need feminism. We believe there's something higher we can be. Do you? If you’ve enjoyed this episode, please check out some of our others!
