Learn more about host Amanda's Italian writing "cult" ;) It's a Live Your Life!!! https://trovatrip.com/trip/europe/italy/italy-with-amanda-montell-oct-2024 If you've ever seen a suburban lady wearing a tee shirt that reads, “I wine because he whines” or “I'm not a normal mom, I'm a wine mom,” then you have likely born witness to a follower of this week's “cult.” Wine moms may have nailed the merch aspect of modern-day fanaticism with their culture of “rosé all day,” and there's certainly valid solidarity in venting about the hardships of American motherhood over a glass of Prosecco or two. But… ten? At the kids' soccer practice? Is any group that aims to cutesify alcoholism en masse ever not at least a “Watch Your Back”-level cult??? In today's episode, Emily Lynn Paulson - author and former top-level MLM rep - joins us to discuss the insidious nature of multi-level marketing (MLM) companies. Emily shares her journey from being a top seller to becoming a vocal critic, shedding light on how these organizations exploit individuals' shame and vulnerabilities, and create unrealistic expectations of success. We share some of our experiences and insights as a powerful critique that some may find controversial or offensive. We explore how MLM manipulates individuals by promising financial freedom, community, and personal fulfillment, and “free” cars, while often delivering the opposite, steeped in white supremacy and body shaming. As a former high level insider, Emily exposes the reality behind the glossy success stories and highlights the importance of reclaiming one's self-worth and intuition. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who has been touched by MLM, might be involved in one, or is curious about the true impact of these organizations.“Everything in an MLM is meant to break down your intuition.”- Emily Lynn Paulson“The goal is to get people to sign up as a distributor. Special shoutout to @adhdwithjennafree on IG for the term 'local sober'.Research shows that people with ADHD are at high risk for alcohol dependence. In this episode, I open up about the struggle of using alcohol as a nightly aid to combat insomnia, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm, only to realize the negative consequences it had on my sleep and overall well-being. Reflecting on my experience during Dry January, I discovered the extent of my cravings and how they misaligned with my values, prompting a reevaluation of my relationship with alcohol. Tune in as we explore the higher risk of alcohol use disorder among those with ADHD, and what that can mean for us.In the final segment, I share my approach to embracing "local sober," where I only drink on special occasions away from home. I recommend resources such as Alcoholics Anonymous, reaching out to a friend, and the Sober Awkward podcast. Emily Lynn Paulson was a busy, ass-kicking mom to five children when she realized something was missing. Wanting to find a way to enter the workforce again, she met up with an old friend one night who introduced her to some products. Products her friend was selling. Products that Emily could sell too. She could work her own hours, be her own boss, and still spend all the time with her kids. It sounded perfect. And it was. Until… well, it wasn't. -- Emily's book, “Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing” was a book of the year pick by NPR for 2023. — LINKS Find Emily: Instagram @emilylynnpaulson Founder of @sobermomsquad Follow us: Instagram @wasiinacult Support Us: https://www.patreon.com/wasiinacult Have a story to share on our show? Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Just in case you're thinking about joining that incredible business opportunity selling a life changing product…don't give them your credit card info until you've listened to this A Little Bit Culty remix. We've put together a special Anti-MLM 101 Starter Kit episode with some of our favorite crusaders in the war on schemes, scams, and other internet flim-flams especially for you. Our upline on this one is pretty solid. We dug into our archives and Roberta Blevins came out swinging, so a segment from our Season 2 episode with the LuLa Rich fan fave is at the top of the batting list. She chats with us about the dangers of moldy leggings, #bossbabe energy, pricey sea cruises, other MLM tomfoolery. After Roberta, we move on to a clip from our more recent episode with Emily Lynn Paulson, an author and mother who believes that all MLMs—which form a $180 billion industry—are cults. Spoiler alert: We violently agree. And last but not least, we go all the way back to our Season 1 chat with Douglas Brooks, an attorney and MLM-buster with insights on what it takes to seek justice for people who've been screwed over. Take heart: When prosperity gospel grifters write big checks that their sneaky asses can't cash, there can be legal consequences. NOTES: Roberta Blevins was a Trainer with LuLaRoe, had a team of 75 women under her, and made over $65,000 in bonuses alone. But when she came to the conclusion that it was a rigged, losing game she didn't just leave the business: she testified in the Washington State vs. LuLaRoe Pyramid Scheme lawsuit as a witness for the state. Since leaving MLM, the fan favorite from the LuLaRich series has educated herself on the systemic structure of the business model, the psychological manipulation, the seedy underbelly and governmental ties, the cult indoctrination, and the history of Multi Level Marketing. She educates daily on TikTok, and podcasts in her "free time" on her own podcast, Life After MLM, which explores the dangers of Multi Level Marketing through the eyes of the victims and survivors. Her work has been featured on Amazon Prime Video, Vice Media, Bloomberg News, Split, and Business Insider among others. In this episode of Coaching Edge, I'm joined by Emily Lynn Paulson, a Coach and two-time author with valuable insights into the world of publishing. Emily shares the three key things she wished she'd known before becoming an author. These include the differences between self-publishing, hybrid publishing, and traditional publishing, as she sheds light on their pros and cons. Emily also discusses the often-underestimated expenses associated with publishing. Emily also reveals a few lesser-known facts about publishing, including that most writers fund their own book tours and that there's a ton of persistence (not to mention a pretty thick skin!) required to overcome rejection in the publishing world. Emily emphasizes the role of social media in an author's journey and success, and how to know when you're emotionally ready to share your story, making this episode a must-listen for any coaches considering writing a book. In this episode, we are joined by Emily Lynn Paulson, the author of "Hey Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing." Emily experienced massive success as a leader in a well-known multi-level marketing company. She quickly rose to the top of the organization but left after the MLM took its toll on her life, health, and values. She left her success behind and went on to author her book, which shares a glimpse behind the scenes of an MLM, the tactics used to lure women into them and keep them there. Emily is on a mission to help educate women about how to spot an MLM, how to get out of one if already involved and what to do if being pitched to join one. We also discuss how MLMs can often blur the lines between influencer marketing, fundraising, advocacy and small businesses. Some episode highlights: How one can easily fall into the trap of joining an MLMHow to spot MLM red flagsInfluencer or MLM scam? Why women are more likely than men to be influenced or taken advantage of by MLMs. How to leave an MLM if you are involved or what to do if you are being pitched to join. Please note that while the ultimate goal is to hold MLMs accountable for harm, this is a KIND, SAFE SPACE to talk about MLMs - aka "Multi-Level Marketing" schemes. My hope is that this conversation offers clarity, hope, and encouragement to anyone who's been part of, or negatively affected by, this sneaky, insidious system. Part research, part personal story, part recovery journey...this one is a biggie, folx. Content advisory for this episode: Addiction, alcoholism, recovery, emotional abuse, and cults. My guest today is Emily Lynn Paulson. She's a mom of 5, two-time TEDx speaker, founder of Sober Mom Squad, and the author of "Hey Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, & Other Lies behind Multi-Level Marketing". We don't cover this story in the episode, but when I read it, it stopped me in my tracks: Emily was in the "million dollar club" in her MLM. One day, her MLM presented her with a "free" Lexus and held her up as an example of what could happen if you "worked hard enough". What no one knew was that Emily had to pay for the down payment, taxes, and registration fees for the car herself. She had also paid to cater the party at the car dealership, as well as countless other costs to keep up appearances. And shortly after driving away in her "free car," she was pulled over for a DUI. This is Emily's story of recovery from alcohol, which led to her "amends" for - her words - the very great level of harm she did while inside an MLM. I want to stress that if you or someone you love has been drawn in by an MLM, I really hope you stay open and stick around for this conversation. MLMs prey on hope, the hope that you could be that small percentage of people who succeed. They also amplify the stories of the people at the top, so, it seems like the success is more widely available than it really is. 2. Emily Lynn Paulson is a Shameless Mom of 5 and the author of Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life, and the forthcoming Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing (May 2023). She has given two powerful TEDx talks, both challenging the status quo of parenting, alcohol use, and feminism as we know it. Paulson has also been featured in major publications such as the Today Show, New York Times, Washington Post, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Next Question with Katie Couric, and the Tamron Hall Show. I found Emily and her work by way of Instagram and was instantly obsessed with the conversations she was having around the cult-like behavior of MLMs. As she was sharing about the overlap between MLMs, cults, and Supremacy culture, I knew I had to reach out to ask her to come on the show. I know so many moms have participated in MLMs at one time or another. This conversation is in no way intended to shame, but to shed light. Whenever I talk about MLMs in a negative light, I get messages from women who say, “But the MLM I'm in is different.” Maybe it is, but I want to make sure you have as many tools as possible to be a critical thinker and observer of what happens inside the organizations that benefit and profit from your participation. Listen in to hear Emily share: What inspired her first book, Highlight Reel, on her journey to sobriety What an MLM (multilevel marketing) company is, why they are so seductive, and how they are problematic, if not harmful The commonalities between the seductiveness of mommy wine culture and MLM culture The exploitative nature of targeting moms in MLMs The connection between MLM culture and White Supremacy How those working in “women's empowerment” can be part of systematic brainwashing and indoctrination Links mentioned: Connect with Emily: emilylynnpaulson.com Emily's Sober Mom Squad: sobermomsquad.com Emily on IG: instagram.com/emilylynnpaulson Emily on TikTok: tiktok.com/emilylynnpaulson We love the sponsors that make this show possible! This episode is sponsored by Better Help. Imagine this: an invitation comes your way to join a group of friends, mostly moms (and let's assume you are one). Primary activities involve drinking lots of wine, relishing in sisterhood and female empowerment, and best of all, making loads of money. It's enticing as hell, which explains why Multi Level Marketing groups (MLMs) remain ubiquitous today. What could go wrong? A shit ton! Hence why our guest today, author and mother Emily Lynn Paulson, believes that all MLMs—which form a $180 billion industry—are cults. Oh, but they're not just your average cults, because lobbyists and politicians are fighting hard to keep the legal pyramid schemes not only intact, but growing throughout American suburbia (and beyond) like wildfire. In this episode, we discuss how to not get caught up in the flames. Paulson is also the author of Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life as well as the forthcoming Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing (May 2023). Emily Lynn Paulson is back! And this time it's to talk about her book Hey, Hun Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing that comes out May 30th! In our chat we cover a lot of bases, including the process of writing and publishing a book with an "AntiMLM" message to the oddity of Parasocial relationships and how MLM is dripping in white supremacy. Emily Lynn Paulson is the author of the new book Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing and Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life. She is also a speaker, recovery coach, and the founder of Sober Mom Squad, and has given two powerful TEDx talks, both challenging the status quo of parenting, alcohol use, and feminism as we know it. Emily has also been featured in major publications such as the Today Show, New York Times, Washington Post, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Next Question with Katie Couric, and the Tamron Hall Show. Emily made well over a million dollars during her residency as a #bossbabe at one of the top MLMs. What's wrong with a little girl power? Turns out, a lot. She earned every bonus, gift, and international trip. But she also pushed away friends and family, burned bridges, and wasted precious time being distracted with ‘her business' instead of spending time with her children. She recruited hundreds of women into a dream that wasn't achievable or sustainable. "As a stay-at-home parent, I was understandably attracted to a culture that offered a salve to my loneliness. But I learned that MLMs are actually a way for women to exploit other women. I saw the links between the pseudoscience, white supremacy, and, yes, racism that infiltrated MLM life. I'm speaking out to spark change." -Emily Lynn Paulson Emily and I discuss: how Emily ended up in an MLM, why MLMs are often pyramid schemes, how the consultants are actually the customers, why terms like “bossbabe” and “ladyboss” are misleading, why MLMs are often described as “cultlike”, Emily's quick rise to the top of her organization and how her white privilege and pre-existing financial security made that possible, exclusion, religion and racism in MLMs, the role of “love bombing” and toxic positivity in MLMs, how MLM life encouraged her drinking and brought her to a rock bottom moment, how she exploited her cancer diagnosis for her business, the truth behind the “all-expense paid” trips and cars, the darker side of MLMs and why she decided to write this book how it turned out differently than she'd expected. Emily Paulson's second book, Hey Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and other Lies Behind Multi-Level Marketing (Row House, May 30, 2023) is the eye-opening, funny, and dangerous personal story of author Emily Lynn Paulson rising to the top of the pyramid in the multilevel marketing (MLM) world, only to recognize that its culture and business practices went beyond a trendy marketing scheme and into the heart of white supremacy in America. In this episode of the Write the Damn Book Already podcast, we discussed several aspects of her book writing process as well as her journey to the top of (and then exit from) the MLM she participated in. INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS The basis for the title Hey, hun (because we're all fascinated with titles and where they are settled on!) What compelled Emily to write this (her second) book, and how she got clear on the book's core message The benefits of considering your reader's frame of mind AS YOU'RE WRITING in order to compassionately speak to where they are while taking them toward a new perspective Emily's ultimate goal for the book (the hoped-for benefits for herself AND her readers) Her book-writing process (hint: it starts with a journal!) How she chose which stories to include and which to remove The way she included stories about other people's involvement in her story without outright naming them The hardest part of the writing process (her “messy middle”) and how she worked through some topics her publisher wanted her to write about that initially felt real uncomfortable Handing other people's disappointment and how she's made peace/prepared for what may come when the book is released How Emily discerns the boundary between "leaning into discomfort" and "This is wrong for me." At the time of her cervical cancer diagnosis in 2015, Emily Lynn Paulson was involved in a multi-level marketing (MLM) company — a business where individuals sign up to sell products, and then are encouraged to recruit others to distribute under them. “When I got the diagnosis, I thought ‘OK, I'm going to have to step back and take a break from this,” Paulson said in an interview with CURE®. “I was really encouraged by the people in my upline (saying), ‘Use this to your advantage. You're going through this thing. People love personal stories, people love vulnerability.'” After Paulson was diagnosed, others in the company encouraged her to use her diagnosis to sell more products; she said that this type of emotional manipulation was not an uncommon tactic to make more money. READ MORE: The Dark Side of Cancer and Social Media Meanwhile, Paulson underwent a trachelectomy (cervix removal) and was working on getting sober after her bout with cancer. Two years later, she received a second diagnosis, which led to a hysterectomy, and more doubt about the company she was working for. Eventually, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she said she realized how predatory these sales tactics were and left the company to become a sobriety coach and author of the book, “Hey Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing.” “Being in an MLM, you really target people's pain points… there's a solution to every pain point; it's just a very predatory design,” she said. In this episode of the “Cancer Horizons” podcast, Paulson discusses her cancer experience, life in the MLM, sobriety and more. A few years ago, Emily Lynn Paulson didn't think she had a problem with drinking. She'd quit cold turkey for her pregnancies, after all. But there always seemed to be a reason to drink, an opportunity, an excuse. And, soon, a constant. And her kids noticed. So she made a decision, found a sponsor and a 12-step program, and quit. Now Emily is the founder of Sober Mom Squad, a Certified Professional Recovery Coach, a Facilitator of Addiction Awareness and the author of "Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life." But there was something else she needed to be honest about: her complicit relationship with a predatory multi-level marketing outfit (MLM). Drinking had helped make Emily a sales juggernaut, but she didn't like what she'd bought into. So for the second time inside a few decisive years, she intentionally pivoted away from something central to her life. In this episode of "Your New Life Blend," host Shoshanna Hecht talks to Emily about her upcoming book, "Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing," and her path away from the slippery-slope culture of casual drinking and MLM payday, and towards making amends, and changes.Emily's website: https://www.emilylynnpaulson.com/ instagram.com/emilylynnpaulsonlinkedin.com/emilylynnpaulsontwitter.com/emilypaulson facebook.com/emilylynnpaulsonSober Mom Squad: https://www.sobermomsquad.com/instagram.com/sobermomsquad"Highlight Reel: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond The Filtered Life, and Addiction"https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/highlight-real-emily-lynn-paulson/1133930990"Hey Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing"https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Hey-Hun/Emily-Lynn-Paulson/9781955905251

Wendy's friend, author, and fellow Certified TNM Alcohol Coach, Emily Lynn Paulson, joins her for an honest discussion around why women's drinking has been rising dramatically during the last couple of years. They discuss the connection between stress and alcohol, the additional anxiety and overwhelm of the pandemic and how that has spiked drinking levels and alcohol-related disease, the normalization of women's drinking as a necessary tool of motherhood through the media, and the science behind the addictive nature of alcohol. How do you know if it's time to make a change? Emily and Wendy both believe that labels aren't helpful and that objective tests for “problem drinking” just keep women stuck in patterns that aren't serving them. The only question that matters is “how is alcohol making me feel?” and if the answer is “not great”, then you owe yourself the opportunity to explore it further. And the good news is, there's a way to do it that without white-knuckling it, and Wendy and Emily have the answer. Are you questioning your own drinking? The Sober Mom Squad is just as it sounds: A Squad of Moms who are already sober, those who are just dipping their toes in exploring an alcohol free lifestyle, and everything in between! It was my pleasure having the entire squad on the pod. What an honor! Listen for all things mommy wine culture, holiday advice and best of the show…. WHO IS ON THE NAUGHTY LIST? No topic was off limits and the squad was a delightful mix of intelligent, fierce, pretty funny mommas. “This group was started during the COVID pandemic from an instagram post by the founder, Emily Lynn Paulson, asking how she could be of service to her audience. Jen Elizabeth, Michelle Smith, Celeste Yvonne and Jessica Landon immediately answered the call, and the Sober Mom Squad was born! As mothers, we need to connect, share experiences, share expertise, hear stories, and tell our own. We need to know that we are not alone, and we need to feel that we are in a safe environment away from judgement and stigma. So, we started hosting a weekly free virtual meeting over zoom, discussing all things motherhood, the trials of suddenly homeschooling, the new dynamics of home life, and doing it all without "mommy juice." We found that this community filled a need that had never been filled before, so we expanded it to help even more women. Women, just like you, who are inundated with wine memes and spiked seltzer ads, yet demand MORE for yourself and your families. Women like you, who don't want their kids to grow up with a mom who needs wine to survive them. The five of us have very different backgrounds, live in different states, come from different walks of life, have different areas of expertise and training, and have different sobriety journeys. Our kids range in age from infant to 16 years old. The thing we have in common is a desire to raise children in homes where alcohol is not the focus. Our common goal is to help other women do the same thing.” – Sober Mom Squad MEET THE SQUAD: Emily Paulson: Emily is a writer, speaker, Certified Naked Mind Coach. The Truth Behind Those Online Drinking “Highlights”. Getting Real With Emily Lynn Paulson. How “real” are all those images you see online? The perfect Instagram families? The fancy business trips? The carefree Mom's Night Out? Today my guest is an author, a speaker and my friend, Emily Lynn Paulson. In our conversation Emily and I dig into the truth behind the “Online Drinking Highlights” you see as you scroll through your social media feed. Emily and I know that so many women struggle with their drinking, quietly, in private, and in their own heads - just like we did. You might look around and see everyone else is posting a photo of the sophisticated cocktails at a bar on a date night, the pictures of friends all drinking together around the firepit, or the vacation pictures with the margarita at the beach. And the truth is, you have no idea what anyone else's relationship with alcohol looks like, or what their marriage feels like, or how well they're coping with being a parent and with their jobs. In this episode Emily and I talk about: Why Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook set expectations so high for what a successful woman, mother and wife is “supposed” to be that most women inevitably can't measure up. The reality of what our lives, our jobs, our marriages and interactions with our children looked like as compared to the pictures we posted online. Why posting your highlights on social media is such a draw. As Emily says “In those Instagram squares was the life I wished we were living: a happy marriage, a healthy wife, a happy motherhood. Behind the scenes though, we were barely surviving.” How you can both love your kids and feel grateful for them, and also feel that motherhood is hard, draining and (yes) unfulfilling. And why finding a safe space of women to share your struggles and honest experiences - both good and bad - can be a game changer in living a happier life. In this episode, you learn: How to navigate the drinking culture of parenthood and “mommy juice” How to connect with your partner again after quitting drinking Why it's hard to quit alcohol when it has become part of your love language How not to gravitate toward the pretty images on Instagram and take those photos as real life because the hard stuff is hard to look at both on Instagram and in our own lives. Emily Lynn Paulson is the author of a powerful memoir about her life, her family, her successes and struggles, excessive drinking and disordered eating, and her realization that drinking wasn't working in her life anymore. Emily is a certified professional recovery coach, She Recovers Designated Coach, This Naked Mind Certified Coach, founder of Sober Mom Squad, and a member of the long-term recovery community. She has appeared on media outlets including The Doctors, Parade, Today Parents, and USA Today, discussing how to end the shame and stigma of mental health by and substance abuse disorder. Emily has been sober since January 2, 2017, her recovery path is focused on ruthless honesty, grace, self-love and is documented in her memoir, Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life. Paulson's resources include one-on-one coaching, to help others evaluate whether or not alcohol is serving them in their lives. Paulson resides in Seattle with her husband and their five children.
