WELCOME THE IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC PODCAST * Helping you celebrate Celtic culture through music. I am Marc Gunn. This podcast is for fans of Celtic music and maybe for those who have a hankering to travel to the Celtic nations like I do. It is here to build a diverse Celtic community and help the incredible artists who so generously share their music with you. If you hear music you love, please email artists to let them know you heard them on the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. Musicians depend on your generosity to keep making music. So please find a way to support them. Buy a CD, Album Pin, Shirt, Digital Download, or join their communities on Patreon. You can find a link to all of the artists in the shownotes, along with show times, when you visit our website at celticmusicpodcast.com. Today's show is sponsored by Rie Sheridan Rose. Rie writes many things, but one of her favorite things to do is to create a new song and send it out in the world. Thanks to the brilliance of her musicians, they always sound lovely, even though she can't write a note of music. Rie was one of our generous supporters of our Kickstarter earlier this year. She's a fantastic writer and songwriter. In fact, I've set many of her poems to music. Half of my Firefly album, As Long As I'm Flyin' was written by Rie. Most of my album Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits, was written by her as well. She wrote ALL of the lyrics for my album, Pirates vs Dragons. She also wrote the song “Soul of a Harper” which I'll share today as well. Follow the link in the shownotes to learn more about Rie Sheridan Rose. You'll also find a link to her enormous collection of books and writings on Amazon. I am all packed and ready to fly to Scotland later this evening. I have one week in Scotland followed by a week visiting my mom in Italy. I'll try to post a blog on Patreon during the week to let you know how things are going and if we find any new favorite places to hike in Scotland. You can follow our Patreon page for free and get some blogs. If you are a Celtic musician or in a Celtic band, then please submit your band to be played on the podcast. You don't have to send in music or an EPK. You will get a free eBook called Celtic Musicians Guide to Digital Music and learn how to follow the podcast. It's 100% free. Just email Email follow@bestcelticmusic and of course, listeners can learn how to subscribe to the podcast and get a free music - only episode. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! You are amazing. Russell Howell emailed: "Tractoring on our smallhold while listening! Really love the show, it is my companion anytime I am on the tractor or making mead!" Maura Goodin emailed: "Good afternoon, I didn't expect to be writing in to a podcast today, but I had yesterday's episode playing while I was working from home today and was pleasantly surprised by the second track you selected, by Keltricity; the set they were playing is all tunes that my dad, John Goodin, composed. He passed away two and a half years ago now. He was a mandolinist and guitarist, who composed a pretty wide range of music from dance tunes to classical pieces; the Classical Mandolin Society of America has preserved his website and blog at https://mandotopia.classicalmandolinsociety.org/, where he collected all his recordings and sheet music (much of it freely available under a Creative Commons license and maintained by CMSA). I see that Keltricity is from Louisville, which makes sense, as my dad was one of the founding members of the Louisville Mandolin Orchestra before my family relocated to northeastern Iowa; he kept in touch with a lot of the local musicians and the Louisville Mandolin Orchestra actually played so many of his pieces that they ended up recording a CD of them (called, of course, "It's All Goodin"). The tunes Keltricity played in that set are all ones that were in the repertoire for my dad's contra dance band, Contratopia, and that recording featured some of his published harmony parts as well. Contratopia still regularly plays for dances here in Minneapolis where I live, at the same folk dance hall where my own band plays, so we're keeping up the music since he's gone. I'm not sure if you've ever played Contratopia on the show, sorry  -  -  I definitely haven't listened to the full back catalog of podcasts, though I've been an occasional listener for many years!  -  -  but I know you've played a track by another band that their pianist is in, Brass Lassie, so if you haven't checked their recordings out, you might like to! Their albums all have a mix of original tunes by band members and traditional tunes in Celtic and old - time styles. They used to tour the DC area contra dance scene and play for the Sunday afternoon all - waltzes dances there, so there's probably more than your average number of waltzes on their albums. Sorry for such a long email! Last bit of fun trivia as a thank - you, the "Maggie" in the tune name from that set is our old family dog, a border collie we had when I was little. (She predated the digital age or I'd include a photo!) My dad wrote so many tunes that he named them after anything he could think of (or just the day he wrote them, if he never got around to a proper name), so there's several named after our various pets. This set has another one named after Maggie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56neWaCahc4 I hope you have a good weekend, and thanks again for the great surprise!"

Made you dig a deep river to keep you from me. Oh, the water is rushing, come to sweep me away 'Less I die of sorrow, I will cross it today. I would build me a bridge a hundred meters long To see the other side of what I did wrong Well you say you don't hate me, but I guess that I'm scared That with a river between us, you'll no longer care. I would build a boat, and paddle agaist all sorrow. And if I sail down the river, then I'll be back again tomorrow. I would face cold death, run and leap to your side. And if I fall in the river, I'll be warmed by your sight. I would beg your forgiveness for the pain I've fed And I'd find the source of the river you've bled. Then I'd close the gates of the dam I built there. And never again will you have anything to fear. Well I never knew that your tears ran so deep. But when I'ved dammed those tears, I will kiss your sweet cheek. I will hold you close 'till your tears finally cease. And I'll sing you a lullaby to bring you peace. 33:21 - SUPPORT THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my supporters on Patreon. If you enjoy this podcast or my music, please join the Club. Having had years of Celtic Invasion Vacations where we sort of do the same, his story is dear to my heart. From Florence to Machu Pichu, Austria to Croatia, plus the Renaissance festivals he does the rest of the year, Vince has been all over. I heard a version by Ed Kilbourne. It was in 4/4 time and sounded nothing like our version. Our is in 3/4 time. That was the only way I could make it sound like a song that belonged at a Renaissance Festival. Stage performance choreography Frog Kissin' Lyrics words and music by Buddy Kalb, arrangement Marc Gunn Do you remember in the fairy tale, how the wicked witches spell Turned the handsome prince to a toad? By the power of a potion, she handed him the notion He was lower than the dirt in the road. And though she left him green and warted, her evil plans were thwarted Their chanced to happen by a young miss Who in spite of his complexion, offered him affection And broke the wicked curse with her kiss So if you've never been frog kissing Then you don't know what you've been missin', There's a wealth of opportunity under each and every log. And if you've never been charm-breakin', Then you've never been handsome prince makin'. You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down, Kiss you a frog! Once upon a time ago, I was down and feelin' low Like a lonely frog in a pond My life was just a joke, and I was just about to croak Cuz I'd be zapped by life's wicked wand. But in the depths of my depression, there came a true expression Of love from a person so sweet. She gave me warm fuzzy feelings, feelings that were healin' And she knocked me off my little webbed feet. There's a happy-ever-after-land, deep in the heart of man Where a prince and princess abides. But all we get are glimpses, of the happy prince or princess 'Cauce they're covered with a green warty hide. Though they're full of life's potential, they're lacking one essential To enable them to shine like a star. That's a handsome guy or missus, to smother them with kisses And love them just the way that they are. That's the secret of frog kissing You can do it too if you'll just listen There's a wealth of opportunity under each and every log. That's the secret of charm-breakin', That's the secret of handsome prince makin'. You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down, Kiss you a… You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down, Kiss you a… You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down, Kiss you a frog! 47:32 - Brobdingnagian Bards “Frog Kissin'” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 50:29 - CLOSING Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn and Andrew McKee. EATING HUMBLE PIE FOR ST PATRICK'S DAY First let me start with an apology. Last episode, I shared a pet peeve. I said Facebook was my least favorite place to get comments. That's true. But according to my website, I was wrong. There was some old info that said EXACTLY that. Ugh. I screwed up. IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY SOME HUMBLE PIE WITH ME… I have two St Patrick's Day celebrations happening in the Atlanta area this weekend. On Saturday, March 14, I'm at Ironshield Brewing in Lawrenceville, GA. On Sunday, March 15, I'm at Three Taverns Brewery in Decatur, GA. You can come eat some humble pie with me… or at least toast a pint of beer with me. I'd love to meet you. DO YOU NEED A GUEST ON YOUR PODCAST? BUY SELCOUTH BY MARC GUNN My latest CD features Sci F'Irish music. That means it is original songs fusing pop culture themes with Irish drinking songs. There are some traditional music on the album. But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason. Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. It's a fusion of the two. It's heartfelt and a lot of fun. It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ 13:40 - Was the harp banned by Queen Elizabeth? That's the story that Rie Sheridan Rose heard. It led to the creation of a great song first recorded by my old band, the Brobdingnagian Bards. It also became the album title for my first official solo CD. Rie Sheridan Rose is a published author and poet. Little did I know when she gave me the lyrics to this song that I would be singing it twenty years later and have collaborated with her on many songs since. You can hear more of her songs and about our collaborations on show #210 of this show. 16:34 - History on Rie's Story I did a search to find out more about this period in history, to sort of corroborate Rie's story. I found several websites that said, yes indeed, it did happen. Here's some info from HipHarp.com: “The Irish harpers began to be suppressed after the Anglo-Norman invasion in the 12th century, which broke down the old cultural systems. The kings, who always had their own personal harpers, who were of very high standing, were replaced with English nobles. The Irish harpers began an existence of wandering from court to court. The English accused them of being spies. Queen Elizabeth decreed in 1603 that all Irish harp players should be hung and their harps burned. Interestingly, the British loved Irish harp music and usually employed harp players of their own. Queen Elizabeth had one. I guess he was immune. Cromwell was even more radical than Elizabeth and pretty much finished them off. Of course the harp tradition didn't die out all at once. Turlough O'Carolan, the most famous of the Irish harpers we have on record lived from 1670-1738. But 1792 was the last harp meeting in Belfast and by the beginning of the 19th century harp playing had pretty much died out. In Scotland the harp players were able to hide out in the Highlands, but the Battle of Culloden (1745?) pretty much finished off Scottish Highland culture and with it the harp players.” 19:32 - “Soul of a Harper” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 23:01 - Songwriting as a parent offers its own special joys, songs about the children we love. Autoharpers like myself often liken ourselves to actual harpers. The great Irish harper, Turlough O'Carolan, is a favorite of us, but now it's time to highlight an actual harper and songwriter. Sharon Powers is a Celtic harpist in Birmingham, AL. She has played professionally since 2016. Her musical stylings lend both touches of elegance and whimsy that delight the ears of all who listen. She is also the mother of a baby named Arthur as she'll tell you about it in her story. 26:12 - “Arthur's Lullaby” by Sharon Powers from Single -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. But first we gotta get to the Virtual Public House, maybe volume 1. -- The Celtfather Story… Last year, I hired my audio editor to edit this podcast. I already had Mitchell editing the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. That’s been going for a while. But the Pub Songs Podcast has always had a lot more talking. And because there’s more talking, that also means there’s more editing to be done. Which means it’s more expensive to produce. I was trying to think of a way to either cut expenses or bring in more money when I realized in every show, I sing 2-3 songs. I should do something with them. And maybe if I publish an album, it will earn enough to fund the shows for each Quarter of the year. So that’s what I did. Virtual Public House is the name of my brand new album. You’ll get 23 tracks. All of the songs were recorded and performed during the first three months episodes of 2021 on Pub Songs & Stories. Every time you buy one of these CDs, it will help fund the show. If all goes well, I should have a new album to release each quarter highlighting songs from the previous quarter. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s see what you think of THIS album. You can buy it in my store at MageRecords.com. If you are a member of the Gunn Runners Club, then you can even use your discount code to save on CD purchases. I thought about releasing this album on Vinyl. But unfortunately, it is far too long for that. And why do even bother mentioning vinyl? Well, on May 6, you will be able to buy As Long As I’m Flyin on vinyl. Yes. I am talking about a record. Like if you were talking about a record player. That’s exactly what I just did. I noticed my CD producer, Kunaki, now allows artists to sell vinyl records. I got all excited and decided to release my newest album. Then I realized, it’s been a while since I released a full production album. Anyway, you can find that in my Mage Record store. -- If you are not yet subscribed to the podcast, do so in your favorite podcatcher. You can find links to subscribe on our website at PubSong.com. I’d also love it if you would Post a review in Apple Podcasts. How does this show make you feel? I’d love your feedback. 8:34 -  Laughing Jack Story: How a little eavesdropping on a conversation led to a fun pub song and a round of beer for the band. 11:45 - “I’m Not Irish” by Laughing Jack from Live at the Indy Folk Series 15:07 - Will and Jake Thorne Story: They share how Irish Americans were refugees and how they're giving back to help the millions of world-wide refugees currently displaced from their native lands. 17:28 - “Where the Wild Shamrocks Grow” by Turf Fire Liars from Long Memories Short Fuses 21:56 – Marc Gunn Story: What is Star Wars Day? Star Wars is on May 4. It celebrates George Lucas's Star Wars media franchise. The date was chosen for the pun on the catchphrase "May the Force be with you" as "May the Fourth be with you". Even though the holiday was not created or declared by Lucasfilm, many Star Wars fans across the world have chosen to celebrate the holiday. You find the full history of Star Wars Day on Wikipedia. 23:05 - “Jedi Drinking Song” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. I updated the lyrics for all of the songs I sing in this show. You will find lyrics and chords so you can play along with me. Just click the song title to find the lyrics or follow the link in the shownotes to find more Irish & Celtic song lyrics. 27:09 - UPCOMING SHOWS THURS: Coffee with The Celtfather on YouTube (Season 8) @ 12:00 PM Eastern MAY 8: Pepper Place Farmer's Market in Birmingham, AL @ 8:00 AM – 12 PM CT MAY 8: Interstellar Ginger Beer & Exploration Co. in Alabaster, AL @ 7-10 PM MAY 13: Dragon Con Filk Music Concert online @ 7 PM TBD: Art Show for Carmanda 28:57 - SUPPORT WHAT YOU LOVE If you enjoy the music in this show, please show your support. The music of fantasy and Steampunk author, Rie Sheridan Rose is featured today on the Pub Songs Podcast. Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the Virtual Public House for Celtic Geek culture. I am your Guide. My name is Marc Gunn. Today’s show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. Subscribe to the podcast and download free music when you sign up at PubSong.net. WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY 0:18 - SONG: “Elves” from Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits 2:33 - WELCOME -- Watch the show on YouTube. I met Rie Sheridan Rose at Excalibur Fantasy Faire. That was the first Renaissance festival I performed at. Rie became a fan of my band Brobdingnagian Bards. But one day, before I got to know her, she handed me lyrics and a cassette out of the blue. She had written a song and asked if I would sing it. I’ll be honest. I was a bit lazy. I didn’t want to try to learn her melody.I never really did anything with the cassette. But I loved the lyrics. So I wrote some music for it. Andrew and I started playing the song. It was extremely well-received. Eventually, it was recorded for the Bards’ album, Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales. One day, I asked her to write lyrics for a Firefly soundtrack. Then I asked if she would write some hobbit drinking songs with me. Then came a pirate and dragon Steampunk project I came up with. Twenty years later, we have over 30 songs that we’ve written together! And while I do talk about Rie every now and then during shows and in emails. I don’t think I ever did a show dedicated to the songs she and I wrote. Nor have I done a podcast dedicated to our music together. Back in June, I finally remedied that during Coffee with The Cetlfather. I’m pleased to share that show with you right now. 4:18 - LIVE COFFEE WITH RIE SHERIDAN ROSE SHOW 5:10 - “Scouring the Shire” from Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits 8:27 - “There’s a Bug in Cabin Six” from As Long As I’m Flyin’ 13:32 - “Come and Be a Pirate” from Pirates vs. Dragons 15:54 - “Keep Them Soaring” from Pirates vs. Dragons 20:18 - “Soul of a Harper” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 24:18 - “Raise a Glass in Parting” from Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits 26:22 - “Browncoats Keep Flyin’” from Sci Fi Drinking Songs I hope you enjoyed that show. I feel like I don't say that enough. It's a blast to follow your musical world. Along the same lines, the Heroes CD is incredible. It's been getting regular play on the commute from work. Thank you for that too. I got a grin when you mentioned it on the podcast and said "you probably don't have this album." I follow your blog via RSS feed, as I have for years. Sometimes the old ways still work. Anyway, I just read the one about social media not sparking joy for you. *raises hand* Right there with you on that one. I hear more and more that employers won't hire someone without a social media presence. Does it truly matter? I've never thought so. Sounds like you're coming to the same conclusion after years of being in the trenches on that. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the idea of immediacy, but everything seems to be immediate online. As they say, when everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. Unless you're one of these YouTube stars making bank on ad revenue for having millions of followers. Maybe then I'd get the need, but I don't follow any of those types. It's a weird balance. People tell me I'm old for not being on Facebook. Many in the younger generation don't bother with it either. Not sure where that leaves me. But I know what I like. I seek out podcasts and music. That's how I found you years ago. I've never had a reason to second guess. It takes all types in the world. It's like that in any business too. It just seems to me that musicians make music. As Spock told Kirk, it's your first, best destiny. Anything else is a waste of material. ;) I admire that you're willing to try new things, and I can't imagine how much of it comes down to marketing. In the end, you've built a solid product with a solid brand, and you continue to do so. It speaks for itself. I did have one old school idea... have you thought about broadcasting your podcast feed on XM radio? Or even on local FM bands (in conjunction with local Ren Faires and cons)? Then the radio stations feel the need to advertise for you. Radio is where music lives, right? You probably have considered it, but it never hurts to toss an idea out there. I've wondered why, as popular as Ren Faires are now, why there is no Ren Faire Radio. But then... this is what you do in podcast form, isn't it? Is radio not the great granddaddy of all social media? Orson Welles knew it. Freddie Mercury knew it. 80 years on, has it really changed so much? Apologies for rambling. In any case, this is a long-winded way of saying that this old school music fan appreciates you efforts. I have for years, and I will for years to come. I hope your move to Atlanta goes smoothly. All the best to you and yours." 44:39 "Hold Onto Your Soul" by We Banjo 3 from Haven 48:39 "Barrowburn" by Cady Finlayson from Celtic Purple 50:40 "Down By The Sally Gardens" by Dervish from The Great Irish Songbook 55:10 CELTIC PUNK 59:40 "Beggar in the Road" by Templars of Doom from Hovels of the Holy 01:02:39 CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. This offer is good until March 18, 2019. The Pub Songs Podcast celebrates our shared love of Celtic culture. But it also recognizes that our world is changing. So you will mostly hear fun Celtic music on the show. But it'll be mixed in with songs inspired by Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who and Firefly. WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY? 0:18 "The Hunter Set" by Runa from Current Affairs Everyone is Irish on St Patrick's Day. But I prefer to see this as a holiday for everyone of Celtic ancestry. I don’t know how many kilts I’ve seen worn on the holiday, but it’s a lot. 8:25 FACT #1 Ireland is one of seven Celtic nations. These are the places that the Celts settled after invading their way from central Europe before finally being conquered by the Romans and driven to the fringes of continent. The nations include: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, Cornwall in Southwest England, Brittany in France, and Galicia in Northwest Spain. While the Celts settled in those locations, they were eventually pushed out of those homelands to places around the world. 9:32 “Almost Irish” by Ceann from from Almost Irish and Best of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast 14:45 FACT #2 Boston, New York, New Orleans was one of the top 3 immigration points for the Irish during the potato blight of the 1800s. “Men of New Basin Canal” that honors the 30K Irishmen who died digging that canal. 15:22 “Men of New Basin Canal” by Marc Gunn & Jamie Haeuser from How America Saved Irish Music 18:29 FACT #3 March 17th is the holy day of St. Patrick in the Catholic church. Because of this, it was not celebrated like you find it today. In fact, March 17 was a dry holiday in Ireland until the 70s. All the pubs were closed. In 1995 they began celebrating it like in America. It's quite a ironic that as a sainted holiday, St Patrick's Day is celebrated with drinking. 19:00 "St Patrick Never Drank" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure 21:27 FACT #4 St Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Scotland or Wales in the 4th century. Originally, he was enslaved and taken to Ireland. He escaped, became a Christian and went back to convert the Celts. He died in Ireland on March 17, 461. I was born on St Patrick's Day. I have a song for all those born on March 17th or of Irish heritage. 21:55 "Happy Birthday from Ireland” by Marc Gunn from Soul of a Harper 25:08 PUB CHAT I want your feedback. What are you doing today while listening to the Pub Songs Podcast? How has this show inspired you? Send a written comment along with any pictures to marc@marcgunn.com. Use the hashtag #pubsongs in the subject of your email. River Godbee replied to my Marc's Musing email: "Typically I am cleaning up around the house, which never ends when you have a 5 year old! But I also listen while driving to work/school or going on walks. I used to use a variety of podcast apps, but now I stick to Spotify so that I can have my music and shows in one place. (It also makes it easier to find the albums you mention in the show.) And for St Patrick's Day? Since I live in Savannah, I will be avoiding downtown and spending the day with my wife and daughter." Carol Baril replied to Marc's Musings: "Hey Marc! Love the last Coffee with the Celtfather!  I was sick last week with a stomach bug and bad head cold so I listened on my phone while sitting at home with my kitties!  Usually I'm working at my desk and your Podcasts are a great way to relax thru the stress of computer work! I loved that Beer, Beer, Beer song with the Harry Potter twist!  Keep working on that one and you can put it on a new Sci-fi drinking song CD!!! Take care and give your girls hugs from me and my kitties!" 27:06 FACT #5 Green is most-often associated with St Patrick’s Day. But St Patrick’s color was actually blue. And as a wild twist, I was told that the Scots wore orange. It wasn’t until much later I realized that green was the color of Catholics and orange was the color of Protestants. And of course the Republic of Ireland is largely Catholic. 27:35 “The Orange and the Green” by Brobdingnagian Bards from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 29:56 FACT #6 St Paddy’s Day is the shortened version of St Patrick’s Day. However, that shortened name is often misspelled. It should be spelled Paddy. Not Patty. Patty is a girls name. Paddy is short for the Irish name Padraig. 30:52 “P Stands for Paddy” by Emish from Sinners Make the Best Saints 36:30 FACT #7 The most famous Irish song is Danny Boy. But it’s not actually Irish. Okay the melody is an Irish tune called “Derry Aire”. But the lyrics were written by an English lawyer and songwriter named Frederic Weatherly. I get the song requested so much that I play two versions of “Danny Boy”, the original and a parody about cats. 36:57 "Danny Boy for Cat Lovers" by Marc Gunn & The Dubliners' Tabby Cats from Whiskers in the Jar 40:00 FACT #8 The first St Patrick’s day parade was celebrated in New York in 1762. The Irish were trying to hold on to their heritage. Parades sprang up around the world since then, most notably in Chicago where the river is dyed green. Dublin too now has a big St. Patrick’s Day parade. 40:37 "Patrick's Day Parade" by Mick Moloney from McNally's Row of Flats (Irish American Songs of Old New York) 44:05 FACT #9 The leprechaun is a fascinating and mischievous creature from Irish lore. The modern representation was actually a racist link between the Irish and monkeys. It was meant to belittle the Irish immigrants in the early 1900s. It seems Irish Americans embraced and rebirthed the myth. Oh and apparently, there are no female leprechauns in the lore. I wrote a song that celebrates America’s contribution to the leprechaun myth and to Irish music. 44:36 "The Leprechaun" by Marc Gunn from Soul of a Harper 48:35 FACT #10 Slainte Mhaith is an Irish toast. It means “here’s to your good health”. In lovely Gaelic fashion, it’s spelled nothing like it sounds in English. So if you’re out drinking, be it Guinness or tea, raise a glass and repeat the Phrase. 48:53 "Slainte Mhaith" by Kilted Kings from Name On My Soul 50:53 FACT #11 More than 13 million pints of Guinness are consumed on St Patrick’s Day. I hope you will raise a glass also to Charlie Mopps, the fictitious inventor of beer. 51:11 "Beer, Beer, Beer" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure The Pub Songs Podcast is listener-supported. Your generous pledge of as little as $5 or more per month allows me to create music, podcasts, and live videos for your enjoyment. Special thanks to my new patrons: Mario, Tina, Kimberly, UT Scot, Laura and John, Jacqueline, Schellie Neill. Celtic is spoken with a hard-K sound. 55:31 "Sunday After Drunk Singalong" by Mikey Mason from Red Letters If you like Firefly, Mikey Mason and I have a podcast called In the 'Verse: Song Crafting for the Firefly Universe. It's free. Subscribe today! St Patrick's Day is 3-Hours long on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts. Who are your Celtic music heroes? Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the virtual Public House for Celtic culture and change through music. My name is Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic Geek musician and your guide to a kinder, happier world. If something is broken, fix it. That's what my dad told me when I was a kid. The simple fact is things break all the time. We don't fix always fix them. We get stuck in a rut.  But it's the way things have always been. The way things are. It's a tradition. So we choose not to change. 2018 was a good year for me. I rebelled. I broke down traditional music business barriers. Now I'm forging a new path for a new year for my music...and for this podcast. The Pub Songs Podcast is reborn this year. It's a little bit more like a pub. I’m not gonna plan every detail of what I say. Instead, I’m gonna kick back. We’re gonna chat about music... and stuff.  Pub Songs Podcast is music and community. This month, I'm gonna share a live concert I recorded during my Celtic Invasion of Brittany this past summer. But before we get there, let me share a little bit of news. First, I've been really good about my new show on Facebook. It's called Coffee with The Celtfather. It takes place around 9 am... some mornings. There isn't really a set time or date. I'm trying to do these shows at least once a week. So far, Monday has been pretty consistent. But we shall see. I also am trying YouTube as well. But the video quality doesn't strike me nearly as good as it is on Facebook. But I am cross-posting some Facebook videos to YouTube in case you are not on Facebook. If you want to keep these shows going, make sure you Share the Show or drop money in my Virtual Tip Jar. Sharing the show helps expand my audience on Facebook. And of course, tipping lets me know that you really appreciate me making time to bring you good music online as well. I have a bunch of new CD specials this month. Most are on my Bandcamp page. You can buy one Christmas CD for $20 and get three more. Best of all, these CDs can also be used as greeting cards. I only have a limited number of these album/greeting cards left. So get yours soon. I sold my first Celtic Heartstring this week. The Celtic Heartstrings are made from the broken strings of my heart... I mean autoharp. I turn them in Celtic knot jewelry. Each one is unique. So I will try and post a new one every week or so. Finally, there's a Brobdingnagian Bards Christmas special. It includes all of our remaining mass-printed CDs: Real Men Wear Kilts, Nex Monoceroti Per Risibus, Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales, Songs of Ireland, A Faire to Remember. You can get those five CDs for just $45 until December 5th. Plus I'll also send you A Celtic Christmas and A Celtic Renaissance Wedding. That's basically 7 CDs for the price of 3. http://thebards.net/ I want to send a Huge thanks to my New Patrons in the Gunn Runners Club: Jan DiMasi, Kimber Grey. Thanks to new Gold Runners Anita Gorrell and LauraMay Sorkin who raised her monthly pledge this month. Alright. Next summer, I'm leading my next Celtic Invasion Vacation to the Isle of Skye in Scotland. These vacations are pretty incredible. We stay in one location and drive out to see the countryside. I make dinner some nights. I also play music. Last summer, I recorded one of my concerts in our vacation rental. I'm gonna share that with you this month on the Pub Songs Podcast, in its entirety, complete with all my mistakes. Let me set the mood. I think it was Wednesday evening. We had just finished up long day of sightseeing on the Celtic Invasion of Brittany, I believe to the Cairn of Gavrinis. That included a boat trip. You can watch a video about it on YouTube and hear my recording of "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea". We were tired, but as we finished eating, I felt it was time to share some music. So I sat down and started playing. Invaders slowly filed into the living room to listen. Here's my Carnac Celtic Concert. If you want to find out more about the Celtic Invasion of Scotland, the basic itinerary is now online. We're gonna fly into Inverness. We'll then drive to the Isle of Skye and explore the island, it's history, and hopefully some good legends as well. Find all of the details here. The Pub Songs Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn. I've released 22 albums since I started recording solo in 2004. I have so many albums that I wasn't sure what to put on my Celtic Geek compilation that I giveaway free to everyone who signs up to my mailing list. I decided to give one song from my first 20 albums. I've often wondered if I should've just put together a "Best of Marc Gunn" album instead. The problem is picking those songs. I have a LOT of albums. Well, I finally sat down and thought about my most-requested songs over the years by the most listeners. Today's show highlights those songs. I asked members of the Gunn Runners Club too and decided to add a few of their requests as well. You can find full shownotes and subscribe at http://pubsong.com/  Pub Talk My website at marcgunn.com has undergone a bunch of changes designed to simplify the design and guide you to places you want to go. I used to make websites based on SEO, search engine optimization. Now you can easily listen to my music, buy it on CD Baby or Bandcamp, watch video playlists, find shows, and learn all about me. You can order autographed CDs and swag directly from me this summer 2017 when you buy them in my Bandcamp store. Follow the link in the shownotes. The Gunn Runners Club is my home on Patreon. Right now, 121 people generously pledge $1 per month or more to support my life as a musician. Patrons get free music, early versions of songs and lyrics, behind-the-scenes podcasts, a stereo version of the Pub Songs Podcast and first look at new videos. You can see all the cool gifts you get for just $1 at http://marcgunn.com/us/. In addition to all of the amazing goodies I mentioned earlier. You also get a digital copy of my next album. It's for the Browncoats, fans of Joss Whedon's Firefly and Serenity. It's called "As Long As I'm Flyin'". It'll be out in 2018. And yours is a gift for subscribing. Special thanks to my newest patrons: Nick Pierson, Mary Miller, William Brian Sachs.  Become a patron at http://marcgunn.net/  In 2005, I crowdsourced my first album. It was Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers. I raised over $9000 to fund the production of the album. People LOVED the idea of cats and Celtic music. So I crowdsourced the next album, Whiskers in the Jar. I only raised about $6000. The album has sold about half as well as the first, and I only recently recouped the expense 8 years later. Yet, the hardcore fans of the albums have repeatedly shouted, "We want another cat CD!" Thus came the title Sea Shanties for Cat Lovers. I REALLY want to make it happen. But I'll be honest. I don't know if more than a handful of people want the next album to happen. I have a mailing list at catdrinkingsongs.com. I asked them to promote the album. There was a short period of shares. Then it all stopped. The Facebook continues to grow at snails pace. I'm not sure this is something I should put my time in. I've decided that there's just one way to find find out if you're truly passionate about these CDs--Kickstarter. Kickstarter is an all or nothing website. If you don't reach your goal, you get nothing. If you do, you get to make it happen. I've decided that I need at least $15,000 to make this album properly. That'll allow me to hire a producer and record the songs with full instrumentation, just like the last two albums that were produced by Ari Koinuma and Rich Brotherton, respectively. Would you like to see this album happen? Sign up at catdrinkingsongs.com.   Who's Playing the Pub Today If there's a CD you want to check out, visit my music page on my website. 0:15 "The Leprechaun" by Marc Gunn from Soul of a Harper 5:23 "Wild Mountain Thyme" by Marc Gunn from The Bridge 10:00 "Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits" by Marc Gunn from Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits 13:40 "Flower of Scotland" by Kilted Kings from Name On My Soul 16:13 "Mingulay Boat Song" by Marc Gunn from Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion 22:16 "Catnipped Kitty" by Marc Gunn & The Dubliners Tabby Cats from Whiskers in the Jar 25:21 "Close Your Eyes" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure 29:00 "Doctor of Gallifrey" by Marc Gunn from Sci Fi Drinking Songs 31:54 "Lord of the Pounce" by Marc Gunn & The Dubliners Tabby Cats from Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers 36:12 "Bring Me Home, Boys" by Marc Gunn from Sci Fi Drinking Songs 41:42 "Gollum Blues" by Marc Gunn from What Color Is Your Dragon? 45:08 "Old Dun Cow" by Brobdingnagian Bards from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 49:00 "Ring of Hope" by Marc Gunn from Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits 53:04 "Name On My Soul" by Kilted Kings from Name On My Soul Requests: 1:00:10 "Wear the Brown With Pride" by Marc Gunn from As Long As I'm Flyin' 1:02:47 The Barrel Song" by Marc Gunn from Soul of a Harper 1:05:11 "Mining Ship the Red Dwarf" by Marc Gunn & The Dubliners Tabby Cats from Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers 1:08:08 "The Dragons Hoard" by Marc Gunn from Pirates vs. Dragons 1:10:06 "Men of New Basin Canal" by Marc Gunn & Jamie Haeuser from How America Saved Irish Music 1:14:41 "Come Take a Trip on My Airship" by Marc Gunn from Sci Fi Drinking Songs The Pub Songs Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn. One of the highlights of my Celtic Invasion Vacations is playing music for my invaders. That's because the setting is small and intimate. The music is often requested by my invaders who enjoy the many shades of Celtic music I play. On the Celtic Invasion of Cornwall, we had a beautiful house in Instow. Which phrase is more appealing to you? At Dragon Con, Mikey Mason and I were talking about this branding topic. He calls his music Geek Comedy Rock. I call mine Celtic Geek. We obviously prefer the term Geek music over Nerd music. But the NerdCore genre has Nerd Music taking off around the country. Would it be better to use "Nerd music"?  Whether it's called Nerd or Geek, it's all great fun. Music from Marc Gunn, Tom Smith, Rambling Sailors, Bill & Brenda Sutton, Brobdingnagian Bards, The Blibbering Humdingers, Aurelio Voltaire, Mikey Mason, Devo Spice.   Pub Talk Now September 22nd is Hobbit Day, and I'm planning a Hobbit Drinking Songs on Concert Window. It's a free concert you can watch anywhere in the world. What struck me about Hobbit Day is that September seems to be Celtic Geek month. Septmber 17th is Halfway to St. Patrick's Day. September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day. September 22nd is Hobbit Day. Actually September 17-24th is Tolkien Week. So there's a lot of geekiness to celebrate this month. That said, I am hoping to get 100 people to say they are interested in attending my Hobbit Drinking Songs show on Facebook Event page. So if you're interested, please let me know. Then share the event page and the video so others might know about the big day. My former bandmate, Andrew McKee, finally has a mailing list. Head to his website at andrewmckee.com to subscribe and find out about his new album. If you want to get an early copy, you can also pickup the all new Ludicrous Drive of the Brobdingnagian Bards. It features all 13 of our albums, plus, videos and some live concerts, all in a spiffy, laser-engraved, wooden USB drive. Kilted Kings launched our Kickstarter for "Name On My Soul". We hit our initial goal. We're just $204 away from our stretch goal. Check out The Celtfather podcast if you want to find out more about the songs on the album. Will you help? I want to thank all of my patrons. Inspired by the growing success of my fan club, I setup my first Milestone in over a year. It's a 30 minute morning concert on Facebook Live with songs picked by patrons. It costs as little as $1 per month to become a patron, and you'll get bonus blogs, podcasts, videos and more. A big thanks to our newest patrons: Scot Mealy, Blair Holley, Kerry Komai, David C. Newport, Russell Thornes, Scott & Melanie Wienhusen, Beth Copenhaver. Become a Patron Today.
