Greetings Nagians Another Faire to Remember is officially done. The music is off to the printers. Today, we start talking about the first five songs on the new album. Why are they there? What's the inspiration for them? What cool things happened in the recording process. This album is far more personal than we realized. So we're excited to talk about it and even share a song. Brobdingnagian Bards will be at Sherwood Forest Faire on the weekends of April 12-13 and 19-20. We might have smaller stage. But the show will be better than ever! In this deeply personal episode, I share my own journey through the challenges of parenting a son struggling with anger and substance abuse. In this crossover episode with People Who Suffer, Andrew McKee interviews me for a change and I'll walk you through the first signs of my son's struggles and how my emotions became entangled with his; when he was angry, I was angry. When he was upset, I was upset. The situation escalated when my son confessed his substance use, disappeared emotionally and physically, and began skipping school, missing 60 days in one semester. I know it sounds familiar to many of you when I say that shame overwhelmed me, causing me to shut down as a person and a mother, plagued by thoughts of what I should have done differently. I feared we had lost him. As parents, we were consumed by shame and tried to keep our struggles a secret.Getting our son into wilderness was a decision that I firmly believe saved my son's life, leading to an incredible shift in my perspective and also many more ups and downs. When I realized my own part in my son's, family's and my own struggles, and I started working on myself, it completely changed everything. It changes me, it changed my son, and it changed our family. Now, years later, I can truly say my sons have a completely different mom emotionally. Have a listen to my personal story which I hope will benefit all of you.In this episode on how I went from a struggling parent to a parent coach, we discuss:My personal story from being a struggling mom of a struggling teen, all the way to being a parent coach; The first signs of our son struggling with anger and substance use;The shame and guilt I felt as a mom of a struggling teen; How we learned about wilderness and got our son in;The epiphany needed to change our lives; The moment that felt like the beginning of the rest of my life; And so much more!Need support?

Kickstarter for Another Faire to Remember is up TODAY'S SONG STORY: SATISFIED Recorded for Songs of Marked By Great Size and Songs of Ireland, and on Andrew's CD, The Irish Bard Satisfied Lyrics words and music Andrew McKee It was twelve days ago in a pub. Night was near. I was on me fourth pint of their best Irish beer When a thought quickly struck me of all I hold dear. So I went on outside to the hill with my beer. Well, I smelled all the flowers all the flowers. I've left none to behind. I've told more the truth than I've told fib or lie And I hope when you find me in the hills where I'll lie That it'll always be said that I died satisfied. Well, I took both the good and the bad in me life. And I made the most of it in a home with me wife. And I raised me two kids both a girl and a boy. And they made all me life, oh, a gift to enjoy. As for friends I've had many I ne're walked alone, And a few were like family just as much as me own They helped in times troubled and made happiness known. And they gave me a young heart I've never outgrown, Well, the evening was leaving and the sun said goodbye. I thought of me past and I smiled with a sigh. Oh, I had no regrets nay a reason to cry. So I drank me beer down 'till the glass all was dry. 32:00 - Andrew McKee “Satisfied” from The Irish Bard 35:10 - CREDITS Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn and Andrew McKee. Special thanks to our newest and returning patrons: Laura Belle, Michelle Powers, James Regan 17:20 - THE STORY OF REDEMPTION Recorded for The War Doctor | Doctor Who #2.3 Inspired by “The Day of the Doctor” from Doctor Who Download the “Redemption” MP3 Lyrics and music Marc Gunn. Marc Gunn: autoharp, vocals; Rich Brotherton: bass, guitar, percussion. Mixed by Rich Brotherton Background This is a story about finding redemption. In the 50th anniversary Doctor Who episode "The Day of the Doctor", the 10th (Matt Smith) and 11th Doctor (David Tennant) meet The War Doctor. They are horrified and filled with dread to once again see themselves as the man who committed horrible atrocities wiping out the Time Lords and the Daleks with a doomsday weapon. But after centuries dealing with that pain. They finally come to grips with it. They accept the decision they made even though it caused the death of billions of people. But even better, they remember Who they are. The Doctor. Never cruel or cowardly. Never give up or give in. Doctors give hope. They are finally able to save the people they thought they lost. Redemption Lyrics I was so young. I made a mistake That I have never shared. Much to regret. I tried to forget. I ran. That just laid it bare. To speak the words out loud made me Shudder for the harm I done Now I help the innocent Still I feel the need to run. * Because I burn. I burn. It won't cover the pain But it's time I learn. Time I learn. Redemption can come again (x3) Are great men truly forged in fire? While others light the flame? That's what I tell myself so that I can avoid the blame. Deep down inside there's a scared little child Smashing statues, filled with fright. Under cover, changing faces To hide away in plain sight But still I burn. I burn. It won't cover the pain But it's time I learn. It's time I learn. Redemption can come again (x3) And still my monsters come from my past They shatter my future bones. Scary to face them, but time will heal Don't have to do it alone Promise to keep, tho I may weep For the pain I kept deep down Face my fears for 1200 years Hope will turn my life around No longer burn. No longer burn. It may not cover the pain But it's time I learn. It's time I learn. I heard a version by Ed Kilbourne. It was in 4/4 time and sounded nothing like our version. Our is in 3/4 time. That was the only way I could make it sound like a song that belonged at a Renaissance Festival. Stage performance choreography Frog Kissin' Lyrics words and music by Buddy Kalb, arrangement Marc Gunn Do you remember in the fairy tale, how the wicked witches spell Turned the handsome prince to a toad? By the power of a potion, she handed him the notion He was lower than the dirt in the road. And though she left him green and warted, her evil plans were thwarted Their chanced to happen by a young miss Who in spite of his complexion, offered him affection And broke the wicked curse with her kiss So if you've never been frog kissing Then you don't know what you've been missin', There's a wealth of opportunity under each and every log. And if you've never been charm-breakin', Then you've never been handsome prince makin'. You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down, Kiss you a frog! Once upon a time ago, I was down and feelin' low Like a lonely frog in a pond My life was just a joke, and I was just about to croak Cuz I'd be zapped by life's wicked wand. But in the depths of my depression, there came a true expression Of love from a person so sweet. She gave me warm fuzzy feelings, feelings that were healin' And she knocked me off my little webbed feet. There's a happy-ever-after-land, deep in the heart of man Where a prince and princess abides. But all we get are glimpses, of the happy prince or princess 'Cauce they're covered with a green warty hide. Though they're full of life's potential, they're lacking one essential To enable them to shine like a star. That's a handsome guy or missus, to smother them with kisses And love them just the way that they are. That's the secret of frog kissing You can do it too if you'll just listen There's a wealth of opportunity under each and every log. That's the secret of charm-breakin', That's the secret of handsome prince makin'. You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down, Kiss you a… You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down, Kiss you a… You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down, Kiss you a frog! 47:32 - Brobdingnagian Bards “Frog Kissin'” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 50:29 - CLOSING Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn and Andrew McKee. Thanks to my newest Gunn Runners on Patreon: Alice M, Karla A, Triskele, Ayden B 28:49 - DEFENDING YOURSELF FROM AI DEEP FAKES One of my favorite podcasts to listen to is called Akimbo. It's by Seth Godin, a brilliant marketer and thought leader. He constantly challenges his listeners to “make things better by making better things.” That resonates with me. One of my early Irish & Celtic Music Podcast slogans was “changing the way you hear Celtic music.” That was about improving the culture, embracing change, recognizing that our past is important but so is our future. That's what podcasting is all about. Or it can be. This week, Seth didn't something intriguing. He asked ChatGPT to evaluate the functions, the future, and the problems of artificial intelligence like ChatGPT. He recorded the responses… Well, sort of. It turned out the entire recording, except the intro, was an AI voice manipulator that sounded almost exactly like Seth Godin. There was one moment in the recording that I thought, this is kind of dry sounding. I chalked it up to ChatGPT. Little did I know, it wasn't Seth speaking. My mom just shared an AI scam that's happening. I have an idea on how to fix. Thank you Harry Potter! The scam is that an AI simulator will call you on the phone and have the same voice as someone you know. They say that they are in financial trouble. They ask for your help. What do you do? At some point, the simulator will be good enough to fool you. Just like Seth Godin's podcast fooled me. We're already there. But I immediately came up with a defense. It's from the final books of Harry Potter. I'll let ChatGPT explain: “In the final books of the Harry Potter series, Remus Lupin asked Harry Potter a question to prove that he was not an imposter. The question was: "What is the secret of the Marauder's Map?" This was a question that only the true creators of the map - Lupin, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew - would know the answer to. Harry correctly answered that the map was activated by tapping it with one's wand and saying "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good," and that it could be closed by tapping it again and saying "Mischief managed." This answer convinced Lupin that Harry was indeed who he claimed to be.” Yeah. I was talking about it with my mom and realized this is the way we need to protect ourselves from THIS AI scam. We ask a question that only the person we're talking with would know the answer to. Seems simple. But it's a good lesson to pass on. So please please share this idea. Because at some point, you won't be able to tell who's real and who's not. Mind you, that's not to scare you. As I said at the beginning, change is inevitable. We need to work with this bizarre new paradigm. As Seth Godin's podcast points out, it can be beneficial or it can be hurtful. We have the power to choose and to make change. So let's do something for the better. Oh and if you want some more thoughts on ChatGPT by Andrew McKee and me. We did a great podcast on it on the Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast. 37:47 - Marc Gunn “The Long Arm” from As Long As I'm Flyin' 39:33 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories. The departure of the Irish from Ireland in the 1800s had some tragic consequences. Jamie Haeuser's songs “Men of New Basin Canal” and “Bridget's Prayer” dig into that. So we're gonna dig into the songs and the album How America Saved Irish Music. Great news about my next album, Come Adventure With Me. Bandcamp now playlists. And learning to say no. Well, assuming you were part of the Kickstarter. My engineer, Mitchell, sent me three songs last week. I listened to each of them while I was getting my car emissions tested. We spent the rest of the morning emailing and forth with mixes and edits. I love the result, and those are the final tracks for the album. I should have a track listing soon. I want to make sure we nail down the last of those songs. But I greenlighted Mitchell to start creating a song order so I could start listening. The other thing I finally did was come up with a couple Album Pin designs thanks to Miranda. I ran a poll on Patreon between two different designs: one a dragon and one a compass. It was a tight poll. They both are pretty fantastic. But as they say in Highlander: there can be only one! That's actually not at all true. I can do more. But for the Kickstarter, I went with the Compass design that reads: “Never Stop Adventuring”. I'll send that to the printers as soon as I have a track listing. Finally, I'm still on target for sending out the digital album to everyone on Kickstarter on March 17. Here's hoping! 21:10 - Marc Gunn “Whiskey in the Jar feat. She was driving back from an Irish session in NOLA to her home in Robert, Louisiana across the causeway. She told me she had written lyrics for two songs. She asked if I'd set them to music. Of course, without hesitation, I said, “Yes! What are they about?” She then told me how the Causeway she was driving across had once been the New Basin Canal. It was a shipping canal from Lake Pontchartrain through swamp to booming uptown part of New Orleans. Work on the canal began in 1832. Almost immediately, they ran to problems. Yellow fever ravaged the workers. It was deemed too costly to use slaves to build the canal. So instead, the Irish immigrants were hired to build it. Many people don't realize that New Orleans was one of the top immigration points for the Irish behind New York and Boston. As a result, it's estimated that between 500-30,000 Irishmen died digging the New Basin Canal. No one knows for sure the exact number. Wikipedia suggests 8000 might be a more accurate number. But holy crap! But even a popular number of 8000 people dying to dig this canal is insane? So Jamie decided to write a song called “Men of New Basin Canal” to share their story. 26:43 - Marc Gunn & Jamie Haeuser “Men of New Basin Canal” from How America Saved Irish Music Here, we came to find a bit of land Land our fathers never had No land we found but only death From fever, the yellow jack The yellow jack, one day you're up The next you're in the grave A grave they call New Basin Canal For us six miles of pain * Heave ho, boyo, it's dig and death Heave ho, God help us all O‘Hanlan was the first to fall Then down went Mike O'Shea The boss called up and down the line For men to bear away The men who fell, hundreds a day Shook like a Mayo gale Too few there were to dig the trench Too few to bear away. Why is it Erin's sons are called When slaves they cannot spare When earth and water must be moved To make the rich man's share From lake to river to move the goods That make the rich men more Down we fall time and again And none to hear our prayer But we will rise, somehow, sometime To rule those who rule us We'll fight to o'ercome the loss Of thousands of Ireland's best We will be known as men who died Will live to make our mark The men of New Basin Canal Known as New Orleans own It's a powerful story. It had me mesmerized imagining the almost shanty style of work to dig the canal. So when I came up with the melody and chorus, that's the rhythm that I picked. Especially with her “Heave ho, boy”. It just screamed sea shanty. Later, Jamie and I recorded the song for our CD, How America Saved Irish Music. The one little thing I had to add to it was a crash symbol. You see, I have long thought this was a great sing and interact along. In particular, I always imagined clapping like this. Heave ho, boyo, it's dig and death [clap, clap] Heave ho, God help us all It gives it a great energy. But for the recording, I didn't want clapping. I wanted that crash symbol much like the one used in the song “Zombie” by The Cranberries. Jamie didn't stop at one song though. She also wrote “Bridget's Prayer.” It's basically the same story but it's from the perspective of women who watched their men die digging the canal. The ones buried them. It's another great song. Oh, Michael, please don't go today You're shakin' like a leaf We will make do, o stor, maron We will make do somehow I've washing in, I can do more Just don't go back, I pray It's death my darlin' one, I know It's death in that new canal I pray, in holy Bridget's name I pray, God help us all My babies need their father here My babies need you so Please don't go back, I know that you Will fall if go you do I can find work, I'll sew and wash ‘Till bloody my fingers are Just don't go back, oh, stor maron It's death in that new canal Oh, Michael love, I cannot live Without you, dearest heart Find other work, I care not what Find anything but that I cannot stand to see you fall Like our friends before have done Too many widows made too young It's death in that new canal A big thanks to TJ Barrens, our sound engineer, Doctor Sick, who provided fiddle and mandolin, and Katie Haeuser who shared some amazing background vocals for the album. 29:52 - INTERVIEW WITH JAMIE HAEUSER 49:27 - Marc Gunn & Jamie Haeuser “Bridget's Prayer” from How America Saved Irish Music 51:31 - JOIN THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. Thanks to my newest Gunn Runners on Patreon: Alice M, Karla Ad, Triskele, Ayden B 52:25 - SAYING NO, EVEN IF IT'S INCLUDED Inara asked me to fill her juice bottle up to a certain line. No higher! I asked her why. She said it was because if she drinks more than that, then she'll get filled up and not be hungry for breakfast. I was blown away that at age 8, she already knows her limits. I might've learned that by 48… She also knew that it was too tempting if I gave her more than her limit. She might end up drinking it. Seth Godin wrote a blog recently about saying no, even if it's included. He concludes that “No might be better than free.” I've come to appreciate saying, “No,” a little bit more recently. I do it on those rare times I go eat fast food. “Do you want the meal?”. No. Not really. Thanks. But I'm also thinking of it in terms of environmentalism. The Album Pin printer I use, GS-JJ, automatically put each album pin in plastic when it is shipped. I really don't want those little pieces of plastic that encase each pin. It just occurred to me today, I can say, no. I can ask them to not put them in there. I bring canvas tote bags to the grocery store so I can bag the groceries myself and not take another plastic bag home with me. When I choose fruit and vegetables, I pick the ones that aren't in plastic bags. I get a little grossed out by putting them on the scanner. But then I wash them when I get home. I don't need more stuff in my life. If I buy it, it needs a reason to stick around. Sometimes that can be for pure enjoyment. Sometimes it's like you want to archive something you love, like many of you do with CDs or USBs. But most of the time it's gotta be something practical. So I do my best to say no. Obviously, I'm. not perfect. I don't do all of these things every time. But as long as I'm learning to say no to excess more than I say yes, I'll call that a win! What about you? What do you say “no” to? 1:00:57 - Brobdingnagian Bards “The Orange and The Green” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales We talk about AI on the next Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast. 1:03:22 - BANDCAMP APP NOW HAS PLAYLISTS One of the big reasons I started selling my music through Bandcamp was because of their app. Yes. You can download music as MP3s or whatever lossless format you prefer, but you can also stream the music through their app. But up until now, I could only listen to one album at a time from one artist at a time. No longer! You can now create your own playlists with music that you own. So if you've been buying my music on Bandcamp these past few years, head on over. Make your own playlist. Buy some merch while you're there. The full store opens up on Wednesday. And this Friday, March 3 is Bandcamp Friday, Bandcamp waives all of their fees. So I earn a little bit more from each purchase. It's prolly a good time to pick up some USBs to archive your music! Or get a ticket to my St Patrick's Day concert. SONG LYRICS Jedi Mickey by Marc Gunn and Andrew McKee A long time ago, a tugboat faraway. Mickey whistled out a tune while bouncing away He turned color after one too many drinks Then called up Lucas saying, “Haha! Dude... your writing stinks!” When Mickey sobered up, he called the board to plan, "I've had a vision, a lightsaber in my hand We'll make Star Wars as we wish upon a star And will do it far better with a story by Pixar. Haha!" [to the tune When you Wish upon a Star] When the mouse wants your franchise He'll start off licensing for rides. If you're tired and you need some cash He'll buy from you...... One part mouse and one part duck One part Jedi and formulaic luck A Wookie on my right and a Goofy one on my left Merging these two companies... is the big test There's a star destroyer shaped like a mushroom house The Beagle boys stand before a Sith Lord mouse While far away a Jedi Mouse stares into space The three moons of Tatooine replaced... by Mickey's face Mickey meets Minnie. The force is strong with her. He lays a kiss on her, and the fans all hurl Minnie is his sister and that folks is a shame Our love for those mice will never... be the same Mickey stabs the Sith. The dark mouse disappears Wherever there's one Sith Lord, another will appear A duck steps forward with a cloak as black as ink With Jedi mice and ducks, I'll need... a stronger drink.

We've asked him to leave, but he won't go away. Now he's talked to our king and they worked out a deal. No homes will he burn and no crops will he steal. Now there is but one catch, we dislike it a bunch. Twice a year he invites him a virgin to lunch. Well, we've no other choice, so the deal we'll respect. But we can't help but wonder and pause to reflect. * Do virgins taste better than those who are not? Are they salty, or sweeter, more juicy or what? Do you savor them slowly? Gulp them down on the spot? Do virgins taste better than those who are not? Now we'd like to be shed you, and many have tried. But no one can get through your thick scaly hide. We hope that some day, some brave knight will come by. 'Cause we can't wait around 'til you're too fat to fly. Now you have such good taste in your women for sure, They always are pretty, they always are pure. But your notion of dining, it makes us all flinch, For your favorite entree is barbecued wench. Now we've found a solution, it works out so neat, If you insist on nothing but virgins to eat. No more will our number ever grow small, We'll simply make sure there's no virgins at all! The Dragon's Retort words by Claire Stephens, music traditional Now, I am a dragon. Please listen to me. For I'm misunderstood to a dreadful degree. This ecology needs my and I know my place. But I'm fighting extinction with all of my race. Well, I came to this village to better my health Which is ever so poor, despite all my wealth. But I get no assistance and no sympathy, Just impertinent questioning shouted at me. * Yes, virgins taste better than those who are not. But my favorite snack mixed with peril is fraught. For my teeth will decay and my trim go to pot. Yes, virgins taste better than those who are not. Well, I'm really quite kind almost all through the year. Vegetarian ways are now mine out of fear. But a birthday needs sweets as I'm sure you'll agree. And barbecued wench tastes like candy to me As it happens our interests are almost the same. You see I'm really quite skillful at managing game. If I ate just your men, would your excess decline? Of course not, the rest would just make better time. Now, the number of babies a woman can bare Has limits. That's why my prunings done there. Don't expect snowflakes tonight. And if you hear Kris Kringle outside His sleigh won't get stuck, He's flying in style In his monster truck During Christmas time in Texas. So don't bother with Christmas lights. Buy your cold winter clothing half-price. Then the presents beneath your tree, Will all smell just like mesquite. In your... Christmas time in Texas. Today's livestream #couragedearheart guest was Andrew Mckee. He has experienced #ADHD all of his life (was only diagnosed at 48) and lived with a lot of suicidal ideation & unhappiness for most of his life. In his late 40's he met Steve Chandler, and George & Linda Pransky at a conference which introduced him to the 3 Principles, but it was meeting psychiatrist Dr Bill Pettit who really turned things around for him. One of my 1st podcast episodes is with the lovely Dr. Bill and you can find that here: (HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU LISTEN TO THIS!) Andrew in his own words.. "has been given the gift of knowing the difference between Who I Am and who I thought I was. This gift of knowing changed my experience of life from one of suffering to one of peace. I now have the label in the life of being a Coach who serves others by helping them experience this knowing." *As always, these episodes are saved in GUIDE #2 in my free FB group, on my YouTube channel, and on my actual podcast. Sometimes life hits you hard, and then you have to make new decisions you hadn't imagined making. Previous goals and ambitions can evaporate, especially after enduring something emotionally, psychologically, and/or spiritually harrowing. Our guest Andrew McKee was tested by tragedy, on top of career confusion, when he entered an MD/PhD program but realized midway he wasn't on the right track. He decided to quit his PhD and embarked on a journey of experimentation and self-discovery. Today, Andrew has 20+ years of experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and healthcare sectors. He is the CEO and founder of Headland Strategy Group, a consultancy firm with offices in the US and Asia and specialising in growth strategy for therapeutics and diagnostics companies. Andrew has previously worked for McKinsey and Company, Google, Genentech and holds biomedical engineering and MD degrees from Duke University. He also is a published writer and holds patents licensed to industry. He is a husband, a father of 3 children, and a professional saxophonist. In today's episode, our host Tina Persson welcomes Andrew McKee. They talk about how Andrew, even after quitting his PhD, made such an impressive career. They discuss music, art, entrepreneurship, and the importance of networking with people from different walks of life. He also gives insights into his life and about his life mentors who advised him to take a leap of faith. On the cusp of a critical life decision, one of Andrew's mentors “...encouraged me that if I take time to reflect and get still, I probably know more than I realise [about what I should do].” If you want to learn more about Andrew's successful journey, including different ideas for facing major life challenges, make sure to listen to this episode. Find out more at thebards.net --- SONG LYRICS: A FAIRY STORY words and music by Shay Healy, Oisin Music Ltd, Ireland In days of old in a kingdom bold, there lived a fearsome dragon. And the King he was in great distress and the countries spirits flagoned. Until one day there came a knight, he was handsome, bold, and charming. And he slew the dragon with his sword with a smile that was so disarming. With a hey and a ho and a hey nany no, a smile that was so disarming. Said the King I wish to know your name, but the knight said do not bother. For the name of a knight of the realm says he, is the same as any other. Said the King tonight in my daughter's bed you shall take your leisure. And she'll reward you for your deed, with a night of exhausting pleasure. With a hey and a ho and a hey nany no, anight of exhausting pleasure. One daughter she had raven hair, a maiden young and chaste. And she slept all night in the pale moonlight, naked to the waist. The other daughter she was fair, the fairest in the town. And she slept all night in the pale moonlight naked from her small waist down. With a hey and a ho and a hey nany no, naked from her small waist down. Well the knight he spends many hour behind the castle wall. But the ending to my story dear, isn't what it seems at all. For in neither bed of neither maid was he repaid for his glory. But he slept all night with the King instead for this is a fairy story. With a hey and a ho and a hey nany no, for this is a Fairy story.

They were kind and goodThe oldest sister went into the woodsShe met and fell in love with a gentlemanHe was the only son of the laird of the land Singing hi da diddle diddle die dal day Hi da diddle diddle die dal day Every day just as the sunset fell, The gentleman and maiden met beside a wellTheir love was true. Their love was strongThe swore to tell their parents that they belong The oldest sister told her six siblingsShe met a man to love for eternity They giggled and laughed with pride and joyThey would see her wed, the sisters swore. The gentleman shared the love he foundBut the Laird reminded him he was duty boundHe was betrothed to a fair ladyTo extend his father's land along the sea There in the meadow, the gentleman professed To marry the maiden in a pretty white dressShe and her sisters, they promisedThey would wait for him til their Marriage kiss The Laird he learned of the marriage planHe swore his son would become a manHe chained his son on the bailey groundthe gentleman said he was already bound As the sun set, the laird laughed cruelly You'll stay there till you listen to meThe Gentleman called out to the nightI will be faithful to my love so bright There was a bright light. The ground it shook. The water went dry Down by the brook. The sisters heard the gentlemen's cry. They turn to stane so they'd never die The Lord went down to the Bailey ground To see if his son had come aroundThere where his son had been chained alaneAll that stood was a standings stane Deep in the wood by a dried up brookStand Seven tall stones that continue to lookThe seven sisters await the swainWho stands in the courtyard all alane Brobdingnagian Bards “Seven Sisters” from Another Faire to Remember NEXT TIME: Marc interviews Andrew about his new CD. Scottish AND Irish. The lyrics and melody are based on the song "The Braes of Balquhither" by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill and Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith. They were adapted by Belfast musician Francis McPeake into "Wild Mountain Thyme". According to Wikipedia, Tannahill's original song was first published in Robert Archibald Smith's Scottish Minstrel. It is about the hills (braes) around Balquhidder near Lochearnhead. Tannahill collected and adapted traditional songs. "The Braes of Balquhither" may have been based on the traditional song "The Braes o' Bowhether". McPeake is said to have dedicated the song to his first wife, but his son wrote an additional verse in order to celebrate his father's remarriage. "Wild Mountain Thyme" was first recorded by McPeake's nephew, also named Francis McPeake, in 1957 for the BBC series As I Roved Out. While Francis McPeake holds the copyright to the song, it is generally believed that rather than writing the song, he arranged an existing travelling folk version and popularised the song as his father's. When interviewed on radio, Francis McPeake said it was based on a song he heard whilst travelling in Scotland, and he rewrote it later. Bob Dylan's recording of the song cited it as traditional, with the arranger unknown, though Dylan's copyright records indicate that the song is sometimes "attributed to" McPeake. In her book Fragrance and Wellbeing: Plant Aromatics and Their Influence on the Psyche, author Jennifer Peace Rhind describes "Wild Mountain Thyme" as essentially a love song, with the line, "Wild Mountain Thyme grows among the Scottish heather" perhaps being an indirect reference to the old custom of young women wearing a sprig of thyme, mint or lavender to attract a suitor. Rhind also notes that, in British folklore, the thyme plant was the fairies' playground and often the herb would be left undisturbed for their use. As for me, I don't remember where I found the song. But it would've been when I started performing at Renaissance festivals or possibly MP3.com. Andrew McKee and I worked our first arrangement for the song in 2000 for the Brobdingnagian Bards album Gullible's Travels. It was later re-recorded with a better version for A Faire to Remember. It stands out largely because of Andrew's recorder solo. It's beautiful. But it's also just a gorgeous song, covered by many people. One of my favorite moments for this song happened on my Celtic Invasion of the Highlands of Scotland in 2013. We were staying in Aviemore, Scotland in the Highlands. I remember walking through the gift shop, when I heard Andrew's unmistakeable recorder playing. My mind nearly exploded as I searched the shop for the origins of the sound. I found a small glass cabinet that had jewelry in it. Gorgeous jewelry made of compressed heather. There were necklaces, earrings, pendants and brooches. It was just fantastic. Then there was like a TARDIS in my brain. It flashed back to an email I had received years earlier. A company asked me if they could use our recording in their shop. So there it was the Brobdingnagian Bards, or rather Andrew McKee, because it was really just the recorder part, on repeat in Scotland. You can check out the company at heathergems.com. In the summer of 2009, I worked out a new arrangement of the song for my CD, The Bridge. That version also inspired a lot of people. It's one of my favorite songs on the album. I love this song, but one of the things that made me so proud about performing this song is hearing my own improvement in singing. It's one of those songs that as I got better, I developed a better ability to phrase things in how it's sung. It makes me feel really good about my own vocal abilities. 24:05 - “Wild Mountain Thyme” by Marc Gunn from The Bridge Pub Songs & Stories was produced by Marc Gunn. I featured him in 2017 on Celtfather Music & Travel. He was on episode #214. But I first found out about him in about 2000. He plays in a band called Empty Hats. They released a wonderful song on MP3.com called “The Hat Came Back”. It was such a fun song, when I got to the faire, I knew one person I HAD to have on this podcast. He told me how his band and this song came to be. 10:31 - STORY FROM GIACOMO THE JESTER 11:55 - “The Hat Came Back” by Empty Hats from Empty Hats 14:30 - STORY FROM MARC GUNN I have a new single that will be released on July 29. It's called “By Amazing Grace”. I wrote it for the In the ‘Verse podcast I did with Mikey Mason. You can listen to episode #13 here. The song is about toxic masculinity. Being masculine and strong are fine. But when masculinity is used as a weapon to belittle and control women or anyone, that's when it's a problem. Just like in the Firefly episode, “Heart of Gold,” where I got inspiration for this song. “By Amazing Grace” turns the tables. It's about a man who meets a woman. He woos her. They fall in love. Then his true colors are revealed. He's actually a monster bent on controlling people. When you meet people like that, there are two things you can do. You can allow them to control you or you stand up to them, fight back, teach them that there is a better place than toxic masculinity, one where people are equal. So she fights back with the reminder that real men are those who treasure and support the women they love. 18:22 - “By Amazing Grace” from Selcouth (featuring Andrew McKee of Brobdingnagian Bards and Jamie Haeuser) 22:29 - Adrian Walter is the drummer, dancer, and front man of the bagpipe band Tartanic. Join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY 0:31 - “Lily the Pink” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 4:09 - WELCOME -- One of the reasons I picked this song is because I’ve had a lot of requests for it over the past few years because of its popularity with the Brobdingnagian Bards. Now of course, Andrew McKee, my partner with the Bards sang the song. One of the other reasons why I picked this song was in case the Virtual Public House CD, volume 2 was a go. But first we gotta get to the Virtual Public House, maybe volume 1. -- The Celtfather Story… Last year, I hired my audio editor to edit this podcast. I already had Mitchell editing the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. That’s been going for a while. But the Pub Songs Podcast has always had a lot more talking. And because there’s more talking, that also means there’s more editing to be done. Which means it’s more expensive to produce. I was trying to think of a way to either cut expenses or bring in more money when I realized in every show, I sing 2-3 songs. I should do something with them. And maybe if I publish an album, it will earn enough to fund the shows for each Quarter of the year. So that’s what I did. Virtual Public House is the name of my brand new album. You’ll get 23 tracks. All of the songs were recorded and performed during the first three months episodes of 2021 on Pub Songs & Stories. Every time you buy one of these CDs, it will help fund the show. If all goes well, I should have a new album to release each quarter highlighting songs from the previous quarter. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s see what you think of THIS album. You can buy it in my store at MageRecords.com. If you are a member of the Gunn Runners Club, then you can even use your discount code to save on CD purchases. I thought about releasing this album on Vinyl. But unfortunately, it is far too long for that. And why do even bother mentioning vinyl? Well, on May 6, you will be able to buy As Long As I’m Flyin on vinyl. Yes. I am talking about a record. Like if you were talking about a record player. That’s exactly what I just did. I noticed my CD producer, Kunaki, now allows artists to sell vinyl records. I got all excited and decided to release my newest album. Then I realized, it’s been a while since I released a full production album. Anyway, you can find that in my Mage Record store. -- If you are not yet subscribed to the podcast, do so in your favorite podcatcher. You can find links to subscribe on our website at PubSong.com. New stories in the virtual public house. Limited-edition CDs. I'm a Rover, Seldom Sober video. Who recorded on what Selcouth song. And a new hobbit single. It's all on my monthly update, Celtfather Music & Travel, show #279. 0:17 - PODCASTS I've made so many changes to the Pub Songs Podcast over the years. I'm always wondering what do I want it to be? I think I finally have a format I'm excited about. The new intro goes like this: "Welcome to the Pub Songs & Stories, the Virtual Public House where you hear the stories and inspiration behind the music." The new format solves several issues I've had. First, it gives me a way to share my music in a fun capacity, performing "live" for my listeners, in much the same way Bing Crosby would've done on the Kraft Music Hall back in the day. I can sing new recordings of songs. I can share my stories about songs too. These can be either what the song is about or just a story related to the song I'm singing in the show. This is by far the toughest thing about producing the show, coming up with engaging stories. The new format also allows me to share stories and help other musicians. I plan to feature two stories from two different artists in each episode, plus one of their songs from each. If I can get an acoustic original performance, all the better. But right now, I'm just sharing studio recordings. My goal is to help promote them in a more personal setting, again, through stories. But even better, I realized that most musicians don't have my skill with podcasting. I see this new feature as a way for musicians to sort of have their own podcast. Of course that also means I can promote to their fans as well. So it's a win-win as far as I can see... IF I can keep up with the stories. You may also note that I'm not limiting this to Celtic musicians. Instead it's gonna be around my niche Celtic AND Geek music. The new description zooms in on musicians in general. If there's a story to be told, I might consider it. Oh! There's one more thing I am launching--limited-edition CDs. I asked Mitchell to start mixing down all of my songs in Pub Songs & Stories. Every three months or so, we will release a CD featuring the best of all of those songs. I'm also considering a possible USB which might include outtakes or song duplicates PLUS all of the podcast episodes. Again, it's limited edition. So the CD won't be available for long. 3-6 months. I though this might be another nice to fund the podcast. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast had some killer St Patrick's Day shows this year. Episode #500 was over four hours long. I LOVED hearing all of the congrats that were sent in by artists. It was a big pick me up. The March episode of Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast featured music. No big news there. Hopefully, Andrew and I can stay on top of upcoming shows. 4:53 - VIDEOS I think YouTube algorithms are finally understanding my channel. I'm not seeing greater subscribers yet. But the channel is mostly live shows (Coffee with The Celtfather) and I'm getting a decent number of folks watching those. I posted a couple new video singles recently. One was recorded in 2018 for the Celtic Invasion of the Isle of Skye. It's my journey from Glasgow to Inverness by train. The music is for "I'm A Rover, Seldom Sober". I have more video singles that are coming. I also created several new Canvases for Spotify. I'm still thinking about what videos to use for which song. Slowly getting those uploaded. The next Celtfather Live concert is scheduled for Thursday, April 15. This one is "For Mother Earth". I'm not sure what songs to include on that outside of "Heart of Fangorn". But whatever. If you have any suggestions, let me know. Tickets are different this time. All you have to do is spend $8 in my Mage Records store and you will get access to the show. And of course it's free to all Heroic Gunn Runners. 7:16 - IN THE STUDIO I'm still getting tracks back from musicians for Selcouth are done. No big update just yet. But I have most of the tracks from Screeched Inn done for "Bright Side of Everything". I'm waiting on some background vocals. Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer sent their tracks for "Favor of a Dance". They sound amazing. I have an update I'm waiting on from Andrew McKee, The Irish Bard, for "By Amazing Grace". The Muckers recorded their parts for "Kilty Pleasure" but I'm still waiting for the tracks. Nathan Deese sent his recordings for "Breathing". And it's perfect! Sam Gillogly and I released a new single on March 18 called "Proudfoot Shuffle". It's already getting a lot of streams on Spotify. I also started rewriting "Happy Birthday From Ireland". I never play that song because it's rather vain based. It was a birthday song for me. So now I'm editing the lyrics to make more about all of the children of Irish immigrants who are discovering their heritage. 9:08 - MERCH Of course, I already mentioned the Pub Songs & Stories CD that'll come out probably next month. I'm planning some package deals very soon. I don't remember which package deal is first. I think it's a comedy package... Keep any eye on the store and my mailing list for details. In a weekly email to Unleashed subscribers in the fall of 2019, I asked, "What you are doing this fall to get better at what you do?" Umbrex member J. Andrew McKee sent me the following extraordinary response, and I asked him to be a guest on the show to discuss. To learn more about Andrew's consulting practice (which we don't discuss), visit: HeadlandStrategy.com. Here is Andrew's answer on what he is doing to get better at what he does: New: Resumed saxophone practice 2-4 times a week, with a goal to resume performing in a narrow (muse-inspired) set of genres by 2021. I may also get a teacher if I can sustain through Q1 (9 months ongoing!) Hired a change coach with psychology and spiritual training to help me vision an inspiring growth trajectory for my consulting business while balancing writing and family priorities Teaching more private webinars and a university course (one 3-hour module) (me and my staff) Teaching more lunch and learns to our growing staff Doing Zoom hip hop dance classes with my daughters (Michael Peele!) Sending more emotionally vulnerable emails to my close guy friends about the ups and downs of life, and having more 1:1 phone calls where I stop beating around the bush Protecting occasional afternoons for 3-4 hour hikes with masks with longtime friends Calling my father more regularly (Q2 weeks) Resuming a meditation practice after I intentionally let it lapse on behalf of first protecting a full night of sleep, and now that our youngest child is out of diapers and I can manage 10-20 minutes per day. Planning to hire an HR consultant to help us build behaviors to learn new knowledge and skills into a broader sense of "performance review" than is typically done. I would also like to align this with peer-encouraged deliberate practice. We are also noodling on hiring an expert for certain skills (e.g., market research interviews), and having them work with us like a coach (pre- and post-game feedback). Added volunteer programs to mentor students at a historically black university, including mock interview practice, career advice, help with career connections, and so on. Sustained: Writing literary fiction 2-3 hours per day Journaling daily about anything and everything ("Morning pages" in the spirit of Julia Cameron) No alcohol since 2013 (or other drugs) No caffeine since summer 2019 (except 1-2 cups decaf coffee or 1 cup of green tea) Intermitted fasting when I feel like it Protecting 7.5 to 8.0 hours of sleep per night, helped by reminders from my Oura Ring Protecting time for the family each day (AM and dinner time) and every weekend, including supporting them in music and sports Reading almost zero business books, which I find very low yield in general Reading widely and muse-inspired, drawing from a long list of books I'd love to read and reading them when I feel inspired, across nonfiction and fiction in a 1:1 mix Listening broadly to music that inspires and moves me
Greetings Gunn Runner Dragon Con approaches. New coffee dates. Brobdingnagian Bards concerts. And lots of news from the studio. It's all today on Celtfather Monthly. Let’s talk about it... on show #268. 0:12 - PODCASTS This was a good month for podcasts. I'm still ahead on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Four solid episodes for August. I even have next two recorded and ready for editing. And I'm getting a few new band submissions to the show. I released two episodes Pub Songs Podcast in August. They were fairly easy to produce too. One is on Irish Rebel Songs and the other touches on Dragon Con and my newest Hobbit single. If you have any show ideas, I would love to hear them. I recorded another Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast with Andrew McKee. We've been a bit lax about recording those. We wanted to get out an episode before Dragon Con. Though we were also recording video concert for Dragon Con. We had a very productive day. 2:04 - VIDEOS The video situation is still kind of on hold right now. I have a lot of things on my plate. So it's just on the back burner. And I must say, it feels good to focus on music creation. More about that in a moment. I did look a couple past video concerts to see if I could find any singles I wanted to release. But I had no luck there. My Coffee show is coming back. I am planning to relaunch the show on Thursdays, starting September 10 at noon. It looks like everything I do ends up on Thursday. For better or worse, that seems like the best day for me. So I'll see what I can do to stick to that new date and time. I am debating rebranding the show title. Maybe something like Coffee with Celts or Coffee n Celts... or maybe even using Sci F'Irish music... I don't know. All I know is I never drink coffee during the show. It was always a bad time. So we shall see... I am actually recording video concerts though. That's because Dragon Con is Labor Day weekend. I plan to have some pre-recorded shows for that. I might do a live stream too. But we shall see. There will be some Brobdingnagian Bards live streams. But I'm working out details right now. I'm still brainstorming a Musical TV Show idea. It's sort of like the Firefly Drinking Songs show from Gen Con and will also be at Dragon Con. But I can't come up with a concept I love. And that makes sense. Hopefully, I'll figure something out. Oh! And Andrew McKee was finally able to setup our computers to stream live. And it's sounding pretty amazing so far. Hopefully, he and I can have some live concerts together in the future. But we have several planned for Dragon Con. 4:45 - IN THE STUDIO I feel like I am creating a lot of new music. It feels good to closes some loops on new and old music. I have six songs currently in the works for my next CD Selcouth. I'm waiting on instrumentation for three others. And I have one that still needs a final mix. All in all, I'm proud how the CD is progressing. I still hope to release it to my Kickstarter supporters by October or November. I'm also excited about my release schedule. I have a bunch of new releases coming soon. Last week, I released "Hobbit Hornpipe". That's the first single from the album Dancing With Hobbits with Sam Gillogly. We hope to release a hobbit dance CD next year. We're gonna try and release a new single every month. I am proudly re-releasing St Patrick's Day. Formerly known as Not Every Day Is St Patrick's Day, I pulled the album from the net in August because the album has not done nearly as well as I hoped. There are many reasons for this. But the album will be back in time for Halfway to St Patrick's Day. I added three new songs to the album. And there's one new recording of a previous song. And a couple remixes. You can get the album now on Bandcamp. But it will be streaming everywhere come September 7th. The physical CD is pending... I have to make a decision how to release that. On September 22nd, my next single with Sam Gillogly comes out. It's called "Brandywine River Reel". And it's a fun one! Another good hobbit dance tune. October 7th is the official release of "Together". This is the Celtic rock song I recorded a couple months back. There's a big KrabbeConnect convention happening on the weekend of October 10th. So the song will be available just in time for the big event! 7:30 - MERCH Every Friday since the pandemic started, Bandcamp has waived all of their profits for items purchased in the store. If you're looking for a time to support my music... well, anytime is good. But if you want to maximize my income, buy any time on Friday, September 4 at magerecords.com. 7:59 - CELTIC TRAVEL I opened the 2021 Celtic Invasion of Scotland to past invaders. As expected, I am flooded with no responses. I guess some could be mailing application forms. But again, this is what I expect. I realize many of the challenges of hosting a trip in Scotland while we're still in the middle of a pandemic. Should we wear masks? Will the country let us in? Will there be a vaccine? Will the U.K. require a quarantine period? It's bizarre. But yes. Masks will probably be necessary. It's totally dependent on entry into the country. And if a vaccine is available, I will might require invaders to be vaccinated. As for the quarantine period, who knows... Nevertheless, we are booked for June 5-12, 2021. And if my family and I can go stay at the castle in Helensburgh, Scotland, we will. I do hope I have others joining us though. - WEBSITES Not much is new for the Irish Song Lyrics website. Slipped out of my priorities. I still need to do the lyrics for the latest Pub Songs Podcast episodes. 9:16 - SHOWS PLANNED FOR SEPTEMBER THURS: Coffee with The Celtfather, YouTube (Season 6) @ 12:00 PM EST SEP 2: Brobdingnagian Bards Concert with Dragon Con Filk Music Track @ 8:00-9:00 PM ET SEP 4: Brobdingnagian Bards Concert with Dragon Con Filk Music Track @ 4:00-5:00 PM ET SEP 4: Dragon Con TV presents Firefly Drinking Songs w/Marc Gunn @ 10:00-11:00 PM ET SEP 5: Marc Gunn Concert with Dragon Con Filk Music Track @ 2:30-3:30 PM ET SEP 5: Andrew McKee Concert with Dragon Con Filk Music Track @ 4:00-5:00 PM ET SEP 6: Songs Lyrics I Wish I Rewrote But Didn't [Panel] w/Marc Gunn @ 1:00-2:00 PM ET SEP 6: Writing Music w/Andrew McKee [Panel] @ 2:30-3:30 PM ET SEP 6: Hobbit Drinking Songs with Brobdingnagian Bards for Dragon Con High Fantasy Track @ 8:30-9:30 PM ET SEP 7: Promoting Your Music With Podcasting [Panel] w/Marc Gunn @ 1:00-2:00 PM ET SEP 7: Pub Songs Podcast Live with Dragon Con Digital Media Track @ 2:00-3:00 PM ET SEP 17: Halfway to St Patrick's Day at Tucker Brewing Company in Tucker GA @ 6:30 - 9:30 PM EDT 14:74 - STATS Mailing list subscribers = 1171 is up from 1158 Celtic Music Magazine = 4003 is the same as last month YouTube Subscribers = 4738 is up 63 from 4675 Facebook Likes = 3755 is up from 3754 Instagram = 1838 is up from 1832 Spotify followers: 1608 is up 29 from 1579 # Number of listens on Spotify: 2280 is up from 2090 Spotify Latest Single Stats: "Hobbit Hornpipe": 18 Most-popular songs on Spotify: The Widow and the Devil (1.4K), Doctor of Gallifrey (501), Hero of Canton (366), A-Working in the Garden (292), Reavers, Malcolm, Reavers (241) Most-popular songs on Amazon Music: Doctor of Gallifrey (233), Hero of Canton (186), The Widow and the Devil (167), Scots Wha Hae (56), I'm A Rover, Seldom Sober (42) 18:38 - PATREON Patreon Subscribers: 159 is up from 158 Patreon Monthly Income: $1178 is down from $1191 Thanks as always for supporting my music.
