Today, we are speaking with Patrick O'Donnell. Patrick O'Donnell is a retired police sergeant with 25 years experience with the city of Milwaukee Police Department. During his police career he worked exclusively on the street in patrol, and he participated and supervised different special units (anti-gang unit, licensed premise unit, violent crime task force, and armed robbery unit). He is now the author of nine books, including the police procedurals Cops and Writers reference guides. His last four books in the Brew City Blues series are collaborations with Michael Anderle and is now working solo on another crime fiction series.Patrick hosts the popular Cops and Writers Podcast. On today's show I will be chatting with one of my former colleagues and friend, Lt. William Walsh! Lieutenant Walsh joined the Milwaukee Police Department in 1993. He started in patrol and worked in one of the busiest and most dangerous districts in the city, and perhaps the country! You never know who you are going to bump into at a cigar lounge, and this held true for me about a month ago. I was in one of my favorite cigar lounges in Madison, Wisconsin and I bumped into William Walsh. Will, is a retired City of Milwaukee Police Lieutenant whom I had the pleasure of working with on the street for the first six years of my career. Lieutenant Walsh is now Professor Walsh and teaches criminology at Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville, Wisconsin. It is my honor and privilege to have Forensic Anthropologist and #1 New York Times Bestselling Author, Dr. Kathy Reichs on the show.For years Dr. Reichs consulted with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in North Carolina, and continues to do so in the province of Québec. Dr. Reichs has traveled to Rwanda to testify at the UN Tribunal on Genocide and helped exhume a mass grave in Guatemala. Divorce is far too prevalent in the world of law enforcement, and I have wanted to do a podcast episode about this subject for some time now.I survived a brutal divorce that lasted over two years and wrote a book about it to help others going through a nasty divorce titled, “Divorced Dad: Kids are Forever, Wives are not.” This book is not full of venom or hate, it is a guide to help those, especially dads, who are navigating the sometimes shark-infested waters of divorce. I used the pen name of L.J. After working primarily in plain clothes units, Brooks joined the Boston Gang Unit as a detective and later, as a Sergeant. While in the gang unit, he worked making gang cases via informants, undercover work, search warrants, and other investigative means. Today we are chatting with Wall Street Journal Bestselling author and retired Police Captain, Isabella Maldonado. Before her foray into the world of crime fiction, Ms. Maldonado wore a gun and badge in real life. She retired as a police captain after over two decades in law enforcement. During her tenure in the department, she was a patrol officer, hostage negotiator, spokesperson, and recruit instructor at the police academy. After being promoted, she worked as a patrol sergeant and lieutenant. Finally, as a captain, she commanded the Gang Council, Public Information Office, and a police precinct with 150 personnel, including patrol officers, detectives, specialty units, supervisors, and civilians. After retiring as a police captain and moving to Arizona, Isabella joined the Sisters in Crime Phoenix Metro Chapter, Desert Sleuths, in 2010 with the goal of embarking on a second career as a crime fiction writer. For five years, she attended workshops and writer's conferences and studied numerous books on the craft of writing.  Isabella's first book in her FBI thriller series, THE CIPHER, was published in November 2020. The sequel, A DIFFERENT DAWN, was released in August 2021, and the third, THE FALCON, in June 2022. Today we are in the Line of Fire with Special Agent Mark Brandenburg of the United States Secret Service. Mark started his career in law enforcement in the Olathe, KS, Police Department (a suburb of Kansas City). He was assigned to patrol, served as an FTO, and was a member of the tactical support unit.In 2001, Mark was hired by the USSS as a special agent. His second day of training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA, was 9/11.Began career in the Chicago Field Office investigating financial crimesIn 2008, Mark moved to Washington, DC, and served 5 1/2 years on the Presidential Protective Division during the Obama administration. During this time was a member of the shift protecting the president and served on the Transportation Section that advances the motorcade routes. Today's show is dedicated to the memory of Agent Jared Francom EOW 01-05-12. Thank you for joining me today for the conclusion of a special two-part interview with a true American Hero, Lt. Nathan Hutchinson. Lt. Hutchinson is one of the most decorated police officers in American history and it was truly an honor to speak to the good lieutenant.Lieutenant Nate Hutchinson has been a law enforcement officer with the Weber County Sheriff's Office for 22 years.  Prior to his promotion to lieutenant, Lieutenant Hutchinson was a sergeant assigned to the Weber Morgan Narcotics Strike Force for five years. He supervised the long term undercover narcotics investigation team, as well as worked undercover himself. On January 4th, 2012, then Sergeant Hutchinson, along with other members of the Weber Morgan Narcotic Strike Force, served a knock and announce search warrant on a small marijuana grow house. During the execution of the warrant, the grow operator ambushed the team. A thirteen-minute gun battle ensued in which six members of the team were struck by gunfire, with one member, Agent Jared Francom, suffering fatal wounds. During the gunfight, Sergeant Hutchinson entered the home under fire on three separate occasions in order to drag wounded officers out of the home.  During each entry into the home, Sergeant Hutchinson was shot, enduring a total of five gunshot wounds. Sergeant Hutchinson spent the better part of a year recovering from his wounds in order to return and continue his work as a member of the Weber Morgan Narcotics Strike Force.  After an additional 18 months at the Strike Force, Sergeant Hutchinson was promoted to lieutenant.  Lieutenant Hutchinson is one of the most decorated US law enforcement officers, having received prestigious awards, including The United States Presidential Medal of Valor and The United States Congressional Badge of Bravery.
