Enjoy this special encore episode where we are joined by Chief Security Officer of Microsoft Canada Kevin Magee, he's sharing his background as a historian and how it applies to his work in cybersecurity. Likening himself to a dashing Indiana Jones, Kevin talks about how he sees history unfolding and the most interesting things right now are happening in security. Spending time tinkering with things in the university's computer room under the stairs gave way to Kevin's love affair with technology. As Chief Security Officer, Kevin says he uses an analogy: "I think we focus on the arrows, not the the archer" meaning there's too much focus on the attacks rather than the ones mounting them. As a historian and witness to our current history, Kevin sees the changes all affecting cybersecurity. We thank Kevin for sharing his story with us. Learn more about your ad choices. Imagine riding a motorcycle at a breathtaking speed of 270 kph. Now, picture doing it with your eyes closed, unable to see a thing! That's the reality for Ben Felton, who couldn't see a thing even before he even got on the bike. Teaming up with Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix legend Kevin Magee - who has an impressive 36 Grand Prix races under his belt and is the winner of the 1988 Spanish Grand Prix - Ben set out to become the world's fastest blind man on a motorcycle. And in true legendary fashion, they achieved this remarkable feat in March 2018. Today, I'm chatting with these incredible lads about their personal and shared journeys. From Kevin's brain surgeries to Ben being told at 15 that he was going blind and there was nothing he could do about it, their stories are nothing short of inspiring. This is an epic conversation that breaks down barriers, redefines what's truly possible, and puts the ‘ability' back into disability. As a CISO, how do you know when you're getting through to the board and the C-suite? One way is to look at the quality of the questions they ask you. Are they learning? This is just one of the questions Kevin Magee fields a lot during “CISO therapy,” a discipline he finds himself practicing more often as Chief Security Officer at Microsoft Canada. Aside from the technology components, the thing his “clients” want to talk about most is how to build, sustain and grow those all-important executive relationships. To conclude National Cybersecurity Awareness Month on the Catalyst, host Cheryl Stookes chats with Kevin about how CISOs can break through with boards and leadership. He also dives into the cybersecurity skills shortage, which he names a symptom of too narrow an approach to finding candidates. Instead, he says, those seeking cybersecurity talent should look beyond the relatively small pool of technologists and consider backgrounds in psychology, criminology and law enforcement – that is, people who understand how cybercriminals think, behave and operate. Universities and other training institutions have a part to play here, too. He discusses “reverse mentoring relationships” with younger members on the team. After all, the security leader's job is not to be the best technical problem-solver, but to define the problem and empower others to solve it. This week on our motorcycle podcast we are talking about cooking food. With our bikes. No, really. Our moto is Live to Ride, Ride to Eat, so what better way to do this than to cook the food while you ride. We've come up with a list of bikes and dishes that we think are good matches. are you willing to try any? Next up we are joined by champion racer Bubba Shobert. He's a three-time A.M.A. Grand National Champion from 1985 to 1987 and was AMA Superbike Champion in 1988 while riding for American Honda. In 1989 Shobert moved up to the Grand Prix world championship riding for Honda. Unfortunately, Shobert's Grand Prix career was cut short at the third race of the season, where he was involved in a terrible crash with Kevin Magee on the cool off lap after the race, wherein Shobert drove into the back of Magee's motorcycle. Magee had stopped his motorcycle in the middle of the track and was performing a rear-wheel "burnout". Eddie Lawson narrowly missed hitting Magee's bike after he and Shobert had just finished congratulating each other moments earlier and were not looking forward. Shobert suffered severe head injuries but was able to make a full recovery after months of rehabilitation. He never raced again, taking instead roles as manager in some teams of AMA Grand National dirt track . With Liza, Stumpy John, Miss Emma and Bagel. Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio's weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view. This week: The world's fastest blind man on two wheels - and that's official. His name is Ben Fetlen, he's a current Guinness World Record holder and a card-carrying Australian bloke However, while this show might at first seem to be about Ben racing across the South Australian salt flats at 266kph on a motorbike without being able to see where he's going, there is actually something a little more important at its heart. Here at Studio 1 we're always keen to explore the link between blindness, low vision and particularly sight loss and mental health issues. In this episode of Studio 1 Ben talks incredibly frankly, eloquently and generously - about the effect that losing his sight in his mid twenties had on his life. As well as losing his sight, Ben lost his career, his independence and the relationship with his partner at the time. At his lowest ebb, Ben ended up self-medicating with alcohol and soft drugs, getting into fights in pubs and eventually got himself into so much trouble that he ended up in jail. Ben goes onto tell us how, with the help of a brilliant counsellor, he managed to get his life back on track. He is without doubt the most eloquent person we've had on this show on the subject of sight loss and mental health and we're incredibly grateful to him for sharing his story with us. If you think that what Ben has to say may help someone going through this kind of issue, please share it with them. – CALL or TEXT: 04 500 78834 EMAIL: studio1@visionaustralia.org TWITTER: http://twitter.com/varadionetwork and http://twitter.com/whingeingpom – GUESTS AND RESOURCES Ben Felten Mentoring - Insightofdreams.org Speed record adventures - blindspeed.com.au [PHOTO CAPTION: A striking image of Studio 1 guest Ben Felten standing on the bright white ground of the South Australian salt flats under a clear blue sky.
