Hanover Sheriff Greg Six joins Jeff to close out our honoring of law enforcement professionals for National Police Week.
National Police Week isn't just a feel-good tradition for us. It's a week that holds two truths at the same time: pride in the profession and a clear-eyed look at the sacrifice behind the badge.Hosts Lisa Greenberg and Officer Mercedes Simonds of the Public Affairs Office sit down with Chief Anthony Sizemore to talk about what Police Week looks like at the Cape Coral Police Department. We get into the moments that build culture and connection, from the formal memorial ceremony with honor guard and reflection, to the simple power of command staff cooking burgers and hot dogs for the troops. We then discuss how we honor line of duty deaths, the risks that don't always get attention like traffic crashes, and why police suicide and officer mental health have to be part of modern law enforcement leadership. Chief shares a framework we keep coming back to: real remembrance is action. That means doing the job the right way, treating people with respect, and giving full effort on every call. It also means building a supportive police department environment with peer support, trauma resources, and financial wellness education so stress doesn't quietly pile up.
As we honor National Police Week, we're shining alight on the people behind the badge and the importance of supporting their well-being. In this episode, Lieutenant Tommy Russell and Captain Nick Parker share how the Bend Police Department aims to support mental health wellbeing.
Ryan and Dana discuss National Police Week alongside recent attacks on law enforcement, including a stabbing attempt and a suspect who blew fentanyl at an officer.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the final hour Jeff chats about death and talks about National Police Week.
In the second hour of the broadcast on May 1, 2026, the focus shifted from accountability to the legislative fallout in Columbia and national observances.Hour 2 Segment BreakdownShane Massey & Closed Primaries: Charlie James discussed Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey's stance on closed primaries in South Carolina. James argued that Massey's hesitation to fully support closed primaries allows "crossover voting," which he claims dilutes the Republican base and protects more moderate incumbents from conservative challengers.National Police Week: The show recognized National Police Week (occurring May 10–16, 2026), honoring law enforcement officers. James emphasized the local and national importance of supporting the "thin blue line," especially ahead of Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15.Redistricting Failure in the Senate: In a major update, James reported that the aggressive mid-decade redistricting push failed to pass the Senate after failing to gain the necessary two-thirds majority. The map now heads back to the House, stalling the GOP's efforts to eliminate Democratic-held districts before the primary season. The "17 Blockers": The hour concluded with a fiery segment targeting the 17 South Carolina Senators who voted against or blocked the redistricting bill. James labeled them "blockers" of the conservative agenda and called for political "punishment" or accountability at the ballot box, arguing they have betrayed the Republican grassroots.

The Cape Coral Police Department's Honor Guard stands as the living embodiment of law enforcement tradition and respect. Sergeant Joe Zalenski and Officer Steven Klakowicz pull back the curtain on this specialized unit in this episode of the Cape CopCast.Described as wearing "the tuxedo of police uniforms," these officers serve as the formal representation of the Cape Coral Police Department at events ranging from community celebrations to the most somber of occasions. With approximately twenty members drawn from various divisions throughout the department, the Honor Guard represents the entire agency while preserving the ceremonial aspects of policing that connect today's officers with generations past.Among their most solemn duties is attending line-of-duty death ceremonies for fallen officers across Florida and beyond. Officer Klakowicz and Sergeant Zalenski share experiences making hours-long journeys to stand in formation and honor officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. The emotional weight of these moments is so significant that "part of the Honor Guard uniform is issued sunglasses" to help officers maintain their composure during these difficult ceremonies. The conversation takes listeners to Washington DC during National Police Week, where thousands of officers from around the world gather to commemorate fallen colleagues. Cape Coral's Honor Guard participated in ceremonies at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, standing alongside officers from departments large and small, domestic and international. This powerful demonstration of brotherhood reminds us that despite geographic distances, all officers share a common bond and purpose.Whether presenting colors at local ceremonies, carrying the department's official flag (recently redesigned through collaboration with local students), or representing Cape Coral at national events, these officers uphold traditions that connect present-day policing with its rich history. As Sergeant Zalenski says in this episode, "It's important that we all have a sense of where we've come from in order to know where we're going."
