In the second part of our interview with Vince Verkay, drummer and co-founding member of death doom legends Evoken, we talk about recording the new album. After nearly 2 decades since the band's Shadows of Night Descending record, the band return to the studio to work with guitar legend and sound engineer extraordinaire, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. Next, we move to an ingenious top 3 list discussion created by Markisan: "When I listen to Evoken I am often transported to hauntingly immersive worlds. I get lost in the sinister tendrils of atmosphere that the band unravels in every song. They tear open passageways to dark and forgotten places, and conjure experiences and feelings both imagined and real. Their music is so sweeping and cinematic that it often reminds me of great film scores, which made me think about the movies I love. So, with that in mind, I think the right question for the countdown is: What 3 films had a significant impact on us emotionally and creatively, and why?" A really great and extended discussion of our top 3 films follows!! So sit back and enjoy a Toppling Goliath King Sue full-bodied, 8.2 ABV hazy double IPA. The brewery describes this awesome beer as "a citra-hopped with a juicy combination of mango, orange, and pineapple flavors finishing with a grapefruit aroma and ferocious bite."Music at the beginning of this episode is from the song "Schadenfreude" from Evoken's most recent album Hypnogia released on Profound Lore Records in 2018. At the end, we hear from the title-track to Evoken's classic album The Antithesis of Light released on Peaceville Records in 2005.
Robin Harris, bassist and vocalist for Canada's Wormwitch, joins me this week to discuss their sensational self-titled album, released by Profound Lore Records in July. We also explore how Robin discovered metal, Wormwitch's creative evolution, and we go deep on our personal experiences of organized religion. On my weekly news rant, I check out the first single by Opeth to feature death metal growls in over a decade. I also round up the latest cuts by Oranssi Pazuzu, Concrete Winds, Undeath, Abramelin and others for judgment. Locrian is not your average band, these three guys are some of the most striking genre-hoppers I have ever encountered. So many genres are on here that many different people attach many different tags to it. Many call them Post-Metal, others label them as Avantgarde Noise but when you talk to the guys and get a grasp of their vast musical influences and tastes it becomes clear that they do not care about labels, they do not restrict their listening habits to any specific genre and thus their music should not be seen that way. There is just so much to find out on their upcoming new record "End Terrain" (out on Friday, April 5th, via Profound Lore Records) that if you try to find out all the elements on these songs you might have to start thinking about mindmaps and spreadsheets in order to organize your thoughts and analyses. However, talking with Andre, Steven and Terence about the record then shows a trio that is not dead serious but really easy to talk to. We hear about their love for Shoegaze, Post-Punk, Experimental sounds and so much more! Enjoy our interview! LOCRIAN is a critically acclaimed experimental metal trio that's hard to define. Today's guests make me appreciate the patience of others. Please welcome, for the third attempt, Andre and Terence from Locrian. What you're listening to is our third attempt at this episode. The first was scrapped due to a computer malfunction. The second had an iphone issue. So take three was the final attempt! And it was worth it. Locrian has a new album set to release so the timing couldn't have been better. Terence and Andre tell me about their early bands and sounds and how they met at a “metal night” party. They tell me about their first gig and the band name. But they also reveal their early band philosophy of saying yes to everything and how that got them booked at a birthday party. We create a new genre just for Locrian. I call it Aggressive Atmospheric. And it makes sense when you consider their influences are artists like Popol Vuh, Emperor, Twisted Sister, and Bert Jansch. So you kind of expect sound shifts when you hear how the band has evolved over the years. They keep their fans on their toes, but the reverse is also true. Fans are behind their recent release of archive recordings (keep messaging them about Setting Yr Jetta On Fire). The latest release is titled End Terrain and it's a pretty heavy dose of reality. The themes are pretty dark but the musical palette expands with more synths and more structure. Order Locrian's End Terrain on Bandcamp, stream it, check it out on Profound Lore Records. This was the first time of 2023 that we picked a favorite the fastest and the most solidified. We've all been fans of Wayfarer's Wild West black metal since their debut and with American Gothic (Profound Lore) this love has grown deeper. It's a fantastic album but I'm sure by now you already know this so we won't bore you with frivolity here. The fam got together with our man on the mic, Buke, to discuss this album, why it's our collective favorite of the month, other albums that grabbed our attention and should have your attention as well, and a ton of other stuff is covered. Fun was had by all as the convo went literally all over the place so grab a comfy seat, your preferred beverage, and enjoy. 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Ep. 94 - Wayfarer. In this episode I talk with Shane McCarthy (Guitar/Vocals). Wayfarer is an American black metal band formed in 2011 out of Denver CO. Wayfarer are often cited as the pre-eminent purveyors of Black Metal Of The American West. Wayfarer will release their fifth album “American Gothic” on October 27th through Profound Lore Records. With their latest album they continue to push the boundaries by incorporating black metal, gothic country, and americana to carve out their own genre of Western American Metal. I've been a supporter of Wayfarer since their first album and have been amazed by their progression. Their previous album “A Romance With Violence” is still one of the most accomplished albums ever to be released. We talk about Shane's background, Wayfarer's history/progression, the new album including films & music that inspired ‘American Gothic'. I hope everyone checks out their newest album. Follow and support Wayfarer by checking out the links below. I hope everyone enjoys this episode. Black metal. But make it western. We welcome frontman Shane McCarthy from Colorado-based black metal outfit, Wayfarer. In this episode of IUF, Shane talks about the 11-plus-year journey for the band, leading up to their fifth studio album, titled “American Gothic.” Powerful riffing, bleak melodic sensibilities and visceral songwriting have cemented Wayfarer as one of the modern innovators of the genre. Black metal may have been born in the Scandinavian countries of Northern Europe and the UK, but Wayfarer have now put in a twist of their own from the Western part of the globe. “American Gothic” showcases this creativity in tremendous fashion. In addition, Shane also talks about his love for Metallica and his first-ever experience in seeing the thrash legends in the flesh, and last but not least, his new chapter in life as a newlywed. Tune in now and be sure to buy and stream “American Gothic,” out worldwide on October 27 via Profound Lore Records.Stay connected with Wayfarer, visit: https://wayfarercolorado.bandcamp.com/album/american-gothic, https://www.instagram.com/wayfarercolorado/ and https://www.facebook.com/wayfarercolorado/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/

We're back for another record label discography deep dive. We teamed up with Phil (Phil's Breakfast Metal) once again to take on the mighty Profound Lore Records, a label which has left a singular mark on the world of forward thinking and riff-bringing metal & dark music. We discussed our first exposure to the label and its inevitable legendary status in setting the bar for extreme metal over the past two decades. Phil and I each plucked four tracks from the label's rich catalog, which was not an easy task. Stick around till the end to hear our honorable mentions (also not an easy task). New York's Artificial Brain are somewhat of an anomaly in the death metal world. Sure they're rooted in death metal but in the blink of an eye can cover tech-death, progressive death, jazz, and noise like world class pros. Their debut Labyrinth Constellation was like stepping on a landmine of infinite sounds and follow up Infrared Horizon saw them branch out a bit and experiment with obtuse and jagged rhythms and melodies that absolutely should not go together but somehow it all just gelled. And now with their third full length, a self-titled one (Profound Lore Records), it seems they're out for blood. It's a bit more on the death metal nose but more angular and aggressive than before. Definitely one that should be on your radar. Buke recently sat down with guitarist Oleg Zalman to dig into the ethos of the new album and of the band and how it all came together. We now bring you this conversation in its entirety so grab your beverage of choice, a seat, and enjoy.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

We talk to the guys about what they’ve been doing during this bizarre time for musicians and of course share some great stories and have some good discussion along the way. Bassist Joseph D. Rowland also recently released music from his side synth project Hosianna Mantra which has been getting excellent reviews. If you are a fan of synth and ambient you need to check this album out. Patreon Page https://www.patreon.com/pallbearer Spotify https://open.spotify.com/artist/2yeEmsTQMNHBlS5dhWtuD1 Hosianna Mantra https://hosianna-mantra.bandcamp.com/album/particle-mythology Band Bio Pallbearer (Little Rock, Arkansas) was formed by Brett Campbell and Joseph D. Rowland in 2008. Devin Holt joined as a second guitarist and the band released their first demo in 2010 and were signed by Profound Lore Records in 2011. Their first full-length album "Sorrow and Extinction" came out in 2012 to rave reviews. Current drummer Mark Lierly joined shortly after the first album and in 2014, the band dropped their second full-length, "Foundations of Burden", which also debuted to stellar reviews and topped lists. "Heartless" was released in 2016, which debuted at #187 on the U.S. Billboard Top 200 chart and #42 on the current albums list and saw the band going in a more progressive rock direction. Their fourth album, "Forgotten Days" was released in October 2020 on Nuclear Blast. When the band was featured in "The New York Times Magazine" in 2017, critic David Rees stated Pallbearer was “one of the most resonant emotional campaigns in American rock music.” Awesome.
In this episode of the Books of Some Substance podcast, Nick is joined by Dylan Desmond of the Seattle doom metal band Bell Witch for an in-depth discussion of Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich. Listen in as we discuss what exactly Desmond connects with in Tolstoy’s writing, how this short novel was remarkably ahead of its time in documenting the emptiness of a materialist life, and how unique of a conundrum death is to us all. Grab some Tolstoy and/or some Bell Witch (Stygian Bough Volume I, their new collaboration record with Aerial Ruin is out now on Profound Lore Records) and get ready for the comfortable pain of the slow burn.
Continuing down the path of "authenticity" in metal and extreme music we revisit an interview with Johannes Persson (Cult of Luna), and dissect SUMAC's monolithic song "Thorn in the Lion's Paw" via Clement Greenberg's critique of abstract expressionism and Charles Peirce philosophy of language. Ashley Spungin is a very unique and undeniable force. She has been a part of bands such as Purple Rhinestone Eagle, Taurus and Insect Ark. Ashley makes noise generating oscillator pedals, she drums, and she is an all around bad ass. Her album "Marrow Hymns" by Insect Ark is out now on Profound Lore Records, and she joined me for jokes and chats about music, touring and as always, we shared music. Closing track "Sea Harps" by Insect Ark. "I Hate Music" theme by Marius Sjoli.

Many grew up in the Georgetown and Northwest areas of DC, where they developed a sense of social justice by witnessing its injustices first hand - they were rich kids living in a privileged world, a social elite. Some of the many legendary DC bands: Minor Threat, Teen Idols, S.O.A., FUGAZI, Bad Brains, Dag Nasty, Swiz, Iron Cross, VOID, The Faith, Youth Brigade, Government Issue, Scream, Marginal Man, Gray matter, EMBRACE, Soul Side, rites Of Spring, Ignition, Worlds Collide, Damnation A.D., Battery, Ashes, Gauge, SEGMENT 3: Essential DC Hardcore Records from Our collections: DAG NASTY - Can I Say Original release 1986 Dischord Records Re-Released in 2002 on CD - CD contains bonus material Dag Nasty was a Washington D.C. melodic hardcore band formed in 1985 by guitarist Brian Baker of Minor Threat. Their style of less aggressive, melodic hardcore was influential to emocore, as well as post-hardcore. Check them out here: http://www.daghouse.com/ BAD BRAINS - Rock For Light Original Release 1983 on PVC Records Reissued 1987 Caroline Records ReMixed and Released 1991 Caroline Records. Bad Brains is an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington DC in 1977. They are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk. Bad Brains developed a fast and intense punk rock sound which came to be labeled "hardcore", and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of their peers. The unique factor of the band's music was the fact that they played more complex rhythms than other hardcore punk bands, also adapting non-punk style guitar riffs and solos into their songs. The second full-length album by hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains, released in 1983. A previous album, Bad Brains, was released in 1982 but only on cassette, therefore making Rock for Light Bad Brains' first proper album. https://www.facebook.com/badbrains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Brains MINOR THREAT - Out of Step Original Release - 1983 Dischord Records Out of Step is the sole studio album by American hardcore punk band Minor Threat. It was released on 45 RPM vinyl in April 1983 through Dischord Records. After a temporary break-up in 1982, Minor Threat entered Inner Ear Studios in January 1983 to record Out of Step. Recording duties were handled by Don Zientara. While the lyrics on their early EPs were an outlet for MacKaye's message, the lyrics on Out of Step deal mainly with friendships and problems associated with them. http://www.dischord.com/band/minor-threat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_Threat Other Links and Info: Dischord Records - http://www.dischord.com/ NYHC Book - http://www.bazillionpoints.com/shop/nyhc-new-york-hardcore-1980-1990-by-tony-rettman/ Bike Mechanic Tales From The Road And Workshop - http://www.velopress.com/books/bike-mechanic/ Cannondale CAAD10 - http://www.cannondale.com/nam_en/2015/bikes/road/elite-road/caad10 Nigel Tufnel - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Tufnel Our Blog: Deathwish Racing - http://deathwishracing.blogspot.com/ Become a Mountain Bike Radio Member Email Kyle Email Mountain Bike Radio
