When we communicate virtually, we are using flattened, muted versions of ourselves. Little surprise, then, that virtual relationships degrade over time. How do we overcome the impoverishment of the virtual world? In this episode, I interview Dr. Nick Morgan, a communications coach and theorist, four-time author, and President at Public Words, about how virtual communication differs from in-person communication — and how that affects our relationships. Nick also talked with me about: - What the underlying psychology says about virtual communication - How to communicate emotional clarity in video - What it means that every mistake is permanent virtually - Why we should augment, rather than dampen, our emotions on screen - How to maintain a virtual relationship Check out these resources we mentioned during the podcast: - Dr Nick Morgan on LinkedIn - Dr Nick Morgan on Twitter - Books by Nick Morgan - Public Words - HubSpot Subscribe, listen, and rate/review the Customer Experience Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play or Google Podcasts, and find more episodes on our blog. Have you ever attempted a joke online and it not only fell flat, but it also offended the person on the other end? Communication in a virtual world is tricky and can be filled with landmines of miscommunication. Dr. Nick Morgan is one of the most respected coaches for speakers. He is an expert communicator and is here to explain the five basic problems of virtual communication and how to overcome them.  Dr. Nick Morgan is a passionate speaker, theorist, and coach. He founded the Public Words consulting firm which helps people convey their ideas with passion and the use of storytelling. He's coached people to give Congressional testimony, to appear in the media, and to deliver unforgettable TED talks. He's written for Fortune 50 CEOs and presidents and has spoken and moderated venues around the world.  His book Can You Hear Me?: How to Connect with People in a Virtual World was published in 2018, and it's more relevant now than ever. It's really a communication manual for remote and virtual work. We talk about problems like lack of empathy, lack of feedback, lack of control, lack of emotion, and lack of connection and commitment. Nick also shares how to solve these issues and convey emotion virtually.   And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode. People are hardwired to get cues about a person's intent from their senses. [08:23] We've been in a virtual world since the beginning of email and texting. It starts with written virtual communication and then moves on to audio and video.  [10:45] Can virtual communication be more personal?  [13:34] When people really take the time to express what they want to say in written media, it can be more intimate. [16:14] Being a live speaking coach has magnified the aspects of virtual communication for Nick.  [18:17] The five basic problems of virtual communication. Number one is the lack of feedback.  [18:45] In face to face interaction we get instant feedback from the five senses. Our minds assume the worst without feedback.  [22:30] Number two is the lack of empathy. We lose empathy because of the negative assumption. There is a lack of clarity of intent in virtual communication. [25:24] We may need to reflect and actually ask the person how what we said made them feel. This will often clear up a misunderstanding. [26:57] Lack of control. Things are remembered forever in the online world. [30:14] Lack of emotion. The audio of our voice is compressed online. Emotions are carried in the overtones, not the basic pitch.  [35:00] Get clear about your intent. Use emojis to put body language back in. Ramp up the emotion and energy in audio. Use your hands during video.  [39:55] Lack of connection and commitment. If the online world isn't working, we move on. In person, we take stock of the human being.  [44:42] Proprioception awareness of space of the body. This is thrown off online. This is why Zoom calls can be stressful.  [49:55] Nick shares his communication skills in the Rapid Round.     Guest Contact –   Public Words Can You Hear Me?: How to Connect with People in a Virtual World Nick Morgan LinkedIn Nick Morgan Twitter Public Words Facebook   Contact Jeffrey – Website Coaching support My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available! Welcome to episode #650 of Six Pixels of Separation.  Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #650 - Host: Mitch Joel. When I got my first opportunity to speak in front of a large audience, I wasn't sure where to turn for more professional public speaking and presentation skills training. Many names of individuals and organizations were thrown my way, but one name that kept rising to the top was Nick Morgan. I immediately purchased his book, Give Your Speech, Change The World, and it did - in fact - change my world and perception of what a presentation is really all about. Then came Working The Room followed by Trust Me and then Power Cues. I eagerly bought and devoured them all. Thankfully, Nick jumped into social media and started blogging over at Public Words. Now, Nick is back with a new book, Can You Hear Me? - How To Connect With People In A Virtual World. According to Nick: "We’re immersed in the digital world; in fact, we couldn’t live without our mobile phones, computers, and social apps that allow us to work and play in ways unimaginable even two decades ago. But the blurring of the virtual and the real has a hidden cost that we pay every day. The technology strips ordinary human emotional understanding out of our communications, and we are the poorer for it.” Take a listen to better understand how we can fix it. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #038 of The Crisis Intelligence Podcast, with Melissa Agnes and Nick Morgan. Every conversation is two conversations, says Dr. Nick Morgan, President of Public Words. The first, being our spoken words and the second being our body language. In fact, our body language – that second conversation – speaks very loudly to the unconscious mind of those we’re communicating with. So loudly that it’s the part of the conversation that people are most inclined to believe, especially if it contradicts the words being spoken. This is particularly important for leaders and spokespeople to remember in a crisis. When you have the weight of high stakes communication on your shoulders, you absolutely want your presence, gestures and body language to affirm your words, rather than oppose them. Sometimes, something as simple and innocent as being nervous can make a person look shady and untrustworthy, not something you want to come across as, being the leader, spokesperson or PIO of a crisis. So then how can you make sure to master this second conversation to communicate even more effectively and compassionately in a crisis? In this episode of The Crisis Intelligence Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Nick Morgan, coach, speaker and writer on smart communications, to answer this very question. Within this conversation, Nick and I discuss the power of the second conversation and Nick reveals key tactics to help you master your subconscious body language to position yourself as a powerful, confident and trustworthy leader, especially when the stakes are high. Why all of this attention on his work? In the marketing world, the best ideas don't always win. One of the main reasons is because they're not presented well (in essence, a poor presentation can kill the best of ideas). That's not just specific to the marketing industry, but all aspects of life. Being a great presenter is a core capability of success. Sadly, most people ignore it. In his latest book, Power Cues, Nick dives deeper into neuroscience and how the smallest of indicators (from voice to body language to more minor nuances affect success.
