Just in time for the pod's 10th birthday, a bucket list guest for the show. We welcome, after two years of trying to line up schedules, Grant Morrison. When we started discussing doing the pod with Grant, it was Animal Man's 35th anniversary. It's now the 37th anniversary, but all that matters is finally having the chat. We talk about the book's creation back in 1988 during the first wave of the British Comics Invasion, when Grant, Gaiman, Milligan and McKean followed Alan Moore in working for DC. This leads to discussing the story that changed the book, issue 5's “The Coyote Gospel.” From there, it's talk about everything from B'Wanna Beast to The Red Bee, Captain Cold to The Inferior Five. That's all leading up to the Psycho Pirate, his trying to undo Crisis and the debut of characters like Overman and Sunshine Superman. And that culminates with looking at the end of Grant's time on the book, when Buddy travels through Limbo to meet … well, a fictionalized version of Grant, when gets to confront his creator about the death of his family and all the other bad stuff that has happened in these stories. There's lots of other stuff in our conversation including Swamp Thing, Sargon the Sorcerer, Doom Patrol, Batman, continuity, metafiction and of course Hypertime, where Grant explains the math behind the idea that most people didn't understand. As you may be able to tell during our chat, Animal Man was a very important book for me, it starting at the same time I was beginning college and being exposed to new ideas and writers like Borges. I'm so happy we were finally able to get this done and thanks to Grant's wife Kristan for all her help over the years trying to balance Trans-Atlantic schedules, natural disasters and various medical issues over that time. But we never gave up, so we hope you like probably one of my favorite episodes of the podcast's lifespan.
This episode, Ed the Sock and Liana Kerzner talk about why Carney is the right man for the moment, make many people see red about the war in Gaza (yes, it's still going on) and talk about one of the stupidest comic book heroes of all time - The Red Bee. Plus, why Ed is addicted to TV shows from Britbox!

Hailing from the Blue Mountains, Red Bee are a dedicated hard rock outfit that have already tasted success with previous albums Ictus and Silent Enemy. They return in 2020 with a new ethos and renewed vigour, starting with the first of three planned singles, "Killing Time".Guitarist/Vocalist Daniel Silk sat down with HEAVY to talk about the ripper new song plus other happenings from the Red Bee camp."It's a little bit more of a hard rock song compared to what we've released in the past," he measured of 'Killing Time'. "We're really proud of it. It came quite naturally the writing of that song which is good. It was one of those songs that was written quite quickly and was there in our heads - we just had to find it (laughs). The whole intro and stuff was written in one go. A lot of those songs sometimes that come real easy like that make me feel like I'm cheating (laughs). We're happy with it and it was just a case of getting it into the band room and making it better. The boys put their spin on it as well."In the full interview, Dan talks us through the subject matter of the song and the inspiration behind it, the easter eggs within the film clip, filming in the blue mountains, future new releases, the idea of releasing singles rather than albums in the modern climate and more.
Some conversations just flow…it was a pleasure to be joined by Margaret Davies on this week's podcast. Margaret has held a number of senior commercial roles in her career and is now CMO at Red Bee Media, having rejoined them 3 years ago. She's seen a swathe of changes occur during her time in the video/broadcast world, and remains hugely excited about what is still to come. Among other topics, we explore how she felt very early on that she was clearly “woman in a man's world” and we discuss some of the ways that has changed, but also what more needs to be done to address the balance. From her career highlights to her advice of “just say yes!” this was a fantastic episode to record :-)

In the last of our Superhero Threepeat, we are super jacked to bring in one of the most ridiculous (and awesome) films ever made. Its just one of only two "Marvel Knights" movies and I can't imagine why there weren't more. Ray Stevenson becomes Frank Castle in a bonkers and violent manner in Punisher: War Zone. Do not fail to watch this epic film. Streaming Do's and Don'ts Frozen - Starz Sahara - Netflix Predator - Starz Wild Card - Pop Quiz, Hotshot Real or not real comic book characters? On this interview episode, Derek is pleased to have as his guest Jon Morris, the author behind The League of Regrettable Superheroes (Quirk Books). This is a book devoted to the heroes throughout comic-book history who just never made it to the big time...and for good reason. As Jon discusses on the show, his work chronicles some of comics' weirdest and wackiest superheroes, complete with backstories, publication history, and colorful vintage art. In the pages of The League of Regrettable Superheroes you'll find strange figures from the Golden and Silver Ages, as well as plenty of head-scratching curiosities from more contemporary times. Throughout much of their conversation, Derek and Jon discuss some of their favorite regrettables, including The Red Bee (a district attorney donning striped leggings and carrying bees hidden inside his belt, his favorite being named "Michael"), The Clown (a police commissioner turned crimefighting circus clown), The Eye (a giant, disembodied eye...that's it, just a floating eye), Nightmare and Sleepy (pro wrestlers dressed in white and with an apparent skeleton fetish), Captain Marvel (not who you think, but someone whose disturbing superpowers includes disengaging his body parts), Fatman the Human Flying Saucer (a green-wearing version of the Fawcett Captain Marvel, but one with a weight problem who turns into a flying saucer), Gunmaster (a pacifist who relies on an inventive arsenal of guns to fight crime), Adam-X The X-Treme (a hero embodying the X-treme worst of '90s culture), the New Guardians (DC Comics' attempt at multiculturalism gone horribly wrong), and Killjoy (Steve Ditko's silent Ayn Randian "mouthpiece"). Jon even discusses some of the earlier manifestations of very current heroes, such the Outsiders, Prez, and Squirrel Girl. What comes through in the guys' conversation -- and what is central to the success of the book -- is Jon Morris's sense of humor. Then again, you have to have one to write about this unlikely collection of crimefighters. A candy-inspired strongman named Captain Tootsie? A robot with an iron propeller beanie named Bozo?
