Hi there Beautiful, Winter's Gift: Why Rest and Self-Care Are Essential for Black woman Creatives. Winter is an invitation to slowdown, self reflect and do as little as possible. Unfortunately we live in a context that doesn't honor nor operate in seasons. As a Black girl creative and black woman artist, I need rest and lots of it. Algorithms, work and school push us beyond our limits. But what if we can follow the seasons and take the invitation to rest? much love, joy and peace, Alecia

I love making shortwave mixes, so it's hard to believe it's been almost 11 years since my last new shortwave creation. Yikes! I know these mixes are labor intensive and I am a terrible procrastinator but I am shocked that it's been that long. Here are the previous mixes: https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2007/04/drift-on-signal.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2008/06/ghost-in-phase.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2010/04/flicker-fade.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2011/03/distant-transmissions.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2012/05/on-behavior-of-radio-waves.html This mix is a combo of real shortwave broadcasts, tracks that have broadcasts already embedded, and tracks that have that scratchy, radio feel. I couldn't resist adding a bit of Conet Project recordings here and there. Most of the straight radio broadcasts come from Myke Dodge Weiskopf. I've been using his recordings for years. You can find his stuff here - https://www.myke.me/ Two of my favorite cuts in this mix are by Mount Shrine from the album Shortwave Ruins. https://cryochamber.bandcamp.com/album/shortwave-ruins It's a perfect combo of ambience, drone, and radio chatter. Mount Shrine is Cesar Alexandre, who sadly passed away in 2021. His two tracks in this mix fit the vibe perfectly. I hope you enjoy the washes of static and voices from the ether. Hopefully it won't be 11 years until the next shortwave mix. Cheers! I have several "preexisting conditions" and the doctors all said I'd die if I got covid. But we were dealing with overwhelming anxiety by staying isolated. We did the unthinkable: living as though covid didn't exist. And I got covid, but I've lived to tell about it. Find out the whole story, and how you can prepare at HardyMom.com Here are 10 things you can do to prepare: Prepare ahead of time (If it's too late for that, it's ok move to the next step) Stay calm Assess your needs in the beginning Ask for the help you need (yes, it's uncomfortable, but you can do it) REST - Rest even when you feel a twinge of energy, because your body needs every bit of energy to fight. Drink fluids even if you're not thirsty. Eat healthy foods even if you're craving that junk food, because your body needs healthy fuel. Find things that make you laugh, it really does help. Stay away from things that upset you. Wait. Have faith. Find out the details, the story of how I got the coronavirus to begin with, and more at HardyMom.com/i-have-covid
We're approaching the final weeks of the semester/quarter and that means summer is just around the corner! The trees are finally coming to life, the birds signing, the flowers blooming, and everywhere everybody in higher ed is just trying to survive the last bit of obligation. We're all feeling the exhaustion, no doubt. This week, Nic and James stray from their regular format and discuss the pandemic and its ongoing effects on student participation this term. It's not all doom, though. Turns out there's this pretty great federal program (what they're call in an “experiment”) that makes funds, specially Pell Grants, available to incarcerated and formally integrated people looking to pursue a degree. *In best Oprah voice* Well, hey, let's celebrate that! As we head into a new year, nobody should be surprised by how much rest can help your life. However, since having surgery, getting rest has been my top priority, and it has dramatically changed my outlook on stations and even relationships in my life. Enjoy my first episode of 2022 and dive into how my surgery has impacted the way I view rest.
Rest is so important, your reminder to recharge.
We live in a time where 'not resting' gives us a sense of accomplishment, don't get me wrong, hard work is vital.. but so is smart work. I've learnt recently that denying ourselves rest is infact quitting. Quitting on the energy we need, quitting on our health, quitting of a clear mind, skipping on our reflective time, compromising quality of work and overall overwhelming our spirit and risking losing our varying battles. Learn to rest, not quit. Yoke your spirit and life to God at the right time, in the right ways handing him your burdens and allowing him to restore you to settings that will help you move forward and win that you would have otherwise forfeit if you denied yourself rest. Matthew 11:28. Gal6:9. Heb 12:2
Good morning, Beautiful, This week, we're meditating about rest. Today's meditation is a simple practice you can use daily to give yourself the space to rest.
This week, we're meditating about rest. This morning is a practice to let yourself rest. To allow yourself to be here with this time you've given to yourself, Present, Open, And surrender to the rest within the stillness here.
This week, we're meditating about rest. Just like the cycles of our breathing, Our lives have cycles of movement and rest. All too often, we are focused so much on our movement, on our achieving and doing, that we devalue and decrease our rest. But we need our rest just as much as we need our movement. To restore. To realign. To reenergize. So this morning's meditation is a breathing exercise to practice allowing rest to be a part of your natural rhythms, so you can practice allowing more of it into your life.
