In this episode Mark talks about one his favourite episodes of television and a universally considered fan-favourite episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" - Season 3, Episode 15: "Yesterday's Enterprise", which first aired during the week of February 19, 1990. The story of the episode involves the crew of the USS Enterprise-D encountering its time-traveling predecessor, the USS Enterprise-C, and having to entertain the possibility that to save the United Federation of Planets from being destroyed by the Klingon Empire the crew of the Enterprise-C must travel back in time on an ill-fated mission to fulfil their destiny and realise a prolonged period of peace with their mortal enemy. The episode saw the return of Denise Crosby as Lieutenant Tasha Yar, who had been killed in a previous episode of the series. Whoopi Goldberg also stars as the recurring and mysterious character Guinan, who is essential to the plot of the episode in guiding the decision of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (played by Patrick Stewart) to order the Enterprise-C back in time because its continued presence in the present was not supposed to happen and as a result of it traveling through time, unbeknownst to its crew, it created an alternate timeline to the one than was supposed to happen. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

Great episode, or THE GREATEST EPISODE?!?! We're getting high on our own supply and remembering how much we love Star Trek on this week's episode. Erin gives us a new catchphrase - "Let's get Warped!" - and another variation on the show intro. Shawn and Matt geek out over the changes to the ship and crew in the alternate timeline (I love typing the words "alternate timeline"). For some reason an in-depth conversation about Grease 2 breaks out, threatening to destroy our jolly mood, until we join back together in celebration of how good Guinan and Tasha are together. And we all agree that Star Trek fans are the best! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Even better, we've got one of the story writers, Eric Stilwell, on as a guest. Along with writing this, he served as a production assistant and script coordinator for TNG, so the man has some tales to tell. A Trek of the Clones is a podcast series where we compare and contrast Star Trek to Star Wars.  This week's show takes us into Yesterday's Enterprise, our pairing for Rogue One!   What's the connection?  Well both feature a band of heroes sacrificing their lives in order to make a more hopeful future and/or present, or more to the point to ensure canon plays out as written.   Featuring war, battle stations and battle logs, this episode serves as an alternate take on a TNG that could be.  We wonder aloud, could this have been a better show, or was it better left as this quick glimpse at a TNG with grittier plotlines, more dramatic lighting, crowded corridors, and a Picard Riker relationship that is antagonistic.   Next week we cover Rogue One!  The best Disney Star Wars film?  Maybe?

It's weird for me to say right out of the box that something is overrated and then to laud it for forty minutes, but there we are. If nothing else, it's a satisfying episode, like a Saturday afternoon earned after a particularly hard week. It's a lot of reward, not for anything unpleasant, but it's gratifying, like a pizza after a strict diet. I'm not trying to make the rest of The Next Generation sound like a chore; it's just that it's a responsible, restrained show that's got all kinds of ideology and knowledge that are the bran and vegetables of television so the episodes where it can be equally smart and high-minded but also indulge in canon and action scenes feel very, very, very, earned.

Earl Grey: A Star Trek The Next Generation Podcast

Section 31 in TNG.   Section 31 first appeared in the Deep Space Nine season 6 episode "Inquisition," which aired in April 1998. Section 31 appeared in 2 more episodes of Deep Space Nine, 4 episodes of Enterprise, the movie Into Darkness, and 5 episodes of Discovery (so far). What would Section 31 have looked like if it had been introduced on The Next Generation instead of Deep Space Nine? In the episodes and movies of The Next Generation that we did get, are there hints of Section 31 that we can find? In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss Section 31 and what it may have looked like on The Next Generation. Topics discussed include our thoughts on how Section 31 has been portrayed in Star Trek, how Section 31 might have been different if it were first introduced on The Next Generation, and the clues that we see in several episodes and movies that we think may point to Section 31's involvement. Tread Perilously's Star Trek month continues with an attempt to tread safely with the consensus best episode of Star Trek: Voyager, "Year of Hell." When the Voyager wanders into an area of space contested by the Zahl and the Krenim, a Krenim commander (Kurtwood Smith) uses his ship's ability to alter the timeline; making the Krenim much stronger in a flash. So much so, a suddenly outclassed Voyager finds itself fleeing from Krenim war vessels. Soon, a week of Hell turns to months and Captain Janeway must make a fateful choice for her crew and command staff. Eventually Tom Paris and Chakotay find themselves guests of the Krenim commander as the situation aboard Voyager gets worse. Will they be able to alter time and undo the Year of Hell? Erik and Justin try to find good things to say about "Year of Hell," and end up complimenting Star Trek: Generations and the TNG episode "Yesterday's Enterprise." Erik also finally admits that The Dark Knight is not a fun movie. His hatred of Tom Paris -- but not actor Robert Duncan McNeill -- comes up once again. Justin calls out Janeway and Chakotay for leaving the bridge in the middle of a fight. Both wonder why the Vulcan isn't in charge. Justin suggests Bajorans would make pilgrimages to New Orleans and examines the notion of leisure in the 24th Century. Also, both dissect why "Yesterday's Enterprise" gets away with erasing itself while "Year of Hell" does not.

Cut yourself a slice of pecan pie and use it as ransom in a coerced cultural exchange as we consider "Prime Factors"!Producer and writer Eric A. Stillwell joins the show this week to talk about an early episode of Star Trek: Voyager that he wrote the story for, along with David R. George III. When Voyager meets the Sikarians, a race with technology that could cut their journey home in half, they're ready to trade everything they have to shorten their trip. However, the Sikarians have their own version of the Prime Directive, and the ideological clash that results threatens to fracture the crew's fragile unity!Eric has worked in Hollywood for over 30 years and helped Trek return to primetime TV in the 1980s, going from a Paramount page to a writer and story editor for Star Trek: The Next Generation. On this episode, we talk about the origins of "Prime Factors", its roots in Assignment: Earth, its connection to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, flipping the Prime Directive on its head, turning Tuvok traitor, the perils of imperialism, and his struggle (along with David George) to get credit for his contributions!Eric also wrote the story for a little episode called "Yesterday's Enterprise", Entertainment Weekly's pick for best TNG episode, and we talk the origins of that idea and why Captain Garrett is named after a pizza place. Plus, Eric shares behind-the-scenes stories of his 10 years working on Trek, from being hired by Bob Justman, to naming Romulans for Maurice Hurley, to ghostwriting for Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, to pitching to Michael Piller, to giving character advice to Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes, to the career-threatening shenanigans of David Livingston's son! Also, Eric talks about the "space ghost pitch board," bringing Tasha Yar back to life, Tarantino's "Yesterday's Enterprise," having your Original Series sequel pitches shot down, and he shares the inspiration for his book with David George and Armin Shimerman, "The 34th Rule"!When Eric asks, "Do you really want to hear these stories?", the answer is, "Yes!" During that period, he composed for 88 episodes of The Next Generation, 76 episodes of Deep Space Nine, 64 of Voyager, and 28 of Enterprise. He also scored the film Star Trek Generations. This work received a fair amount of attention from the Emmy Awards, earning him nine nominations and one win. In addition to taking home the 1993 Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Main Title Theme Music for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, he was nominated in the category of Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music Composition for a Series (Dramatic Underscore) for the episodes “The Child,“ “Yesterday's Enterprise,“ “Half a Life,“ “Unification, Part I,“ “All Good Things…,“ “Heroes and Demons,“ “Workforce,“ and “The Expanse.“ In this episode of Melodic Treks, part 2 of a 13-part series on the Star Trek films, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Zach Moore to discuss McCarthy and his Star Trek contributions. Earl Grey: A Star Trek The Next Generation Podcast

Episodes That Never Happened. We have all seen episodes (or entire seasons!) of television shows that end with, "It was all just a dream!" It can sometimes feel like such storytelling is a "cheat" or are a waste of time. This week, Phillip, Darren, and Daniel pick out episodes of "The Next Generation" that may not have "really" happened, as far as the crew of the Enterprise-D is concerned. The trio asks whether these episodes are still enjoyable or whether it would have been better to have a storyline that "actually" occurred instead. Earl Grey examines episodes featuring amnesia, such as "Conundrum" and "Thine Own Self," as well as "It was all an illusion!" episodes like "Future Imperfect," "Remember Me," and "Frame of Mind." They also tackle "complicated" fan favorites such as "Inner Light," "Yesterday's Enterprise,""Tapestry," and "All Good Things..." They look at whether episodes that are "outside" reality help or hurt a story. Other episodes they look at include "Parallels," ""Tapestry," and "Cause and Effect."  Join Earl Grey for this week's podcast about the "never happened" episodes ... which hopefully will not be considered a waste of time for listeners (though they may hit the reset button at the end). The Chase Rewrite. Fans do not generally regard the sixth season episode "The Chase" as a classic TNG story. However, it offered Captain Jean-Luc Picard a chance to embrace his archaeological passions and embark on an "Indiana Jones"-like adventure including many Alpha Quadrant aliens. "Earl Grey" decides to re-write this episode with the additional challenge of making a new "Yesterday's Enterprise" -- but, this time, with the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-B. In this telling of "The Chase," Darren, Daniel, and Phillip keep much of the beginning of the episode, but instead create a new planet, familiar aliens on this adventure, and a voice from the history books. Look for Picard, Data, and La Forge, along with some strange bedfellows, to meet a storied captain ... and she may make the ultimate sacrifice. Meta Treks: A Star Trek Philosophy Podcast

Alternate Realities vs. Alternate Timelines.   In this episode of Meta Treks: A Star Trek Philosophy Podcast, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling have a followup discussion on the distinction between an "alternate reality" and an "alternate timeline" in response to a challenge by Norman Lao and Jeffrey Harlan on their recent episode of Standard Orbit (Standard Orbit 115: "Wibby Wobbly Primey Wimey").  Mike and Zachary provide a philosophical analysis of different senses of the terms "alternate reality" and "alternate timeline," while also exploring and contrasting key examples of these senses in Star Trek. Examples covered in this episode of Meta Treks include the prime timeline vs. the Abramsverse timeline, the episodes "Yesterday's Enterprise" and "Parallels" from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the Mirror Universe as seen in The Original Series, Deep Space Nine, and Enterprise. 1701-B.Viewers of Star Trek: The Next Generation often spotted those golden Enterprise models in the Observation Lounge over the years - but what was the story behind them? We knew the 1701 and would get to know the Enterprise-A in the TOS-era films; the heroic sacrifice of the Enterprise-C was eventually told in the season three episode "Yesterday's Enterprise." However, there was an Excelsior-class-sized hole in the Enterprise legacy. It was not until TNG's inaugural motion picture, Star Trek Generations, that fans witnessed the christening of the first "Kirk-less" U.S.S. Enterprise - the NCC-1701-B. Earl Grey discusses the ship itself - a modification of the Excelsior-class design (one that remained dormant for several generations!), that had some "extra fat" in its "dad bod," from nacelles that go on for light years to the "love handles" around the main deflector. The trio also discusses the members of the maiden crew - from the much aligned Captain John Harriman to the plucky Ensign Demora Sulu, whose story would be expounded on in the novel-verse. They also try to untangle the timeline of when the third Starfleet vessel named Enterprise entered and left the scene of the Trek verse. So don't sit down in your chair - instead make time for the important things, like this week's discussion of the starship Enterprise, NCC-1701-B.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren MoserExecutive ProducersNorman C. Earl Grey: A Star Trek The Next Generation Podcast

Yar/Sela.Star Trek: The Next Generation was not the first, nor the last, Trek series to kill off a main character. Lieutenant Natasha Yar, the first tactical officer of the NCC-1701-D, appeared in 22 episodes of season one before being unceremoniously killed off, due to conflict between Denise Crosby and the studio. However, Yar (and Crosby) did not end her TNG journey with "Skin of Evil." Phillip, Darren, and Daniel are joined by Andi VanderKolk and Jarrah Hodge (co-hosts of Women at Warp) in a character profile of Lt. Yar, as well as her half-Romulan daughter, Commander Sela.  Yar is a surprisingly complex character, introduced with perhaps the most definite backstory of all the main crew in "Encounter at Farpoint." However, season one did not give Yar many character-focused stories, and the episodes that did focus on Yar are probably best not mentioned. However, Yar's memorable appearances in two outstanding episodes, "Yesterday's Enterprise" and "All Good Things...", provided the audience and Crosby with a more complete Tasha Yar. Earl Grey explores Yar's role in Data's development, the best/worst Yar moments, and if Crosby's portrayal of Commander Sela ("The Mind's Eye," "Redemption, Parts I and II," and "Unification, Part II") added anything to Next Gen. Put on your skin tight yellow unitard, open hailing frequencies, and join Earl Grey (along with Women at Warp 2) as they discuss their character profile of Lt. Tasha Yar. HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserGuestsAndi VanderKolkJarrah HodgeEditor / ProducerDarren MoserExecutive ProducersNorman C. Earl Grey: A Star Trek The Next Generation Podcast

Time Travel.Time travel and Star Trek go hand-in-glove, so it was no surprise that The Next Generation crew had several "timey-wimey" adventures in its seven years on television and in the feature films. Darren, Daniel, and Phillip go "OUTATIME" in this episode, exploring episodes including "Timescape," "Cause and Effect," "Time Squared," "Time's Arrow, Parts 1 and 2," and Star Trek: First Contact. The Earl Grey trio break down all the times Captain Jean-Luc Picard would have been visited by the laugh-a-minute members of the Federation's Temporal Investigations unit with TNG's experiences with time loops, temporal anomalies, and Q's TARDIS-like powers. Prepare to experience a "Quantum Leap" of traveling across the space-time continuum with the Enterprise-D 's "Excellent Adventure" as they try to avoid predestination-paradoxes, and enjoy this episode about TNG and time travel.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren Moser Production Manager Richard Marquez   Content Manager Will Nguyen Chapters Cause and Effect (00:02:07)Time Squared (00:05:07)We'll Always Have Paris (00:10:21)Yesterday's Enterprise (00:15:26)2 (00:22:25) Times Arrow (00:24:21)First Contact (00:29:15)All Good Things (00:34:52)3 (00:39:38) Timescape (00:41:22)Captains Holiday (00:47:03) Star Trek: Interactive VCR Board Game / A Klingon Challenge (00:48:13)A Matter of Time (00:50:24)Tapestry (00:51:49)Firstborn (00:52:58)4 (00:55:03)Final Thoughts (00:56:22)Closing (01:01:37) Send us your feedback!
