In this episode, we examine Friedrich Hayek's The Road to Serfdom, a chilling warning about how societies drift into tyranny—not through force, but through the seductive promise of central planning. Written in the shadow of fascism and communism, Hayek's argument is more relevant than ever: when the state takes control of the economy, it inevitably takes control of our lives. What begins as progress can end in oppression. This is the road to serfdom.
So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys. [1 hour 8 minutes]
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Austrian-British economist Friedrich Hayek's The Road to Serfdom (1944) in which Hayek (1899-1992) warned that the way Britain was running its wartime economy would not work in peacetime and could lead to tyranny. His target was centralised planning, arguing this disempowered individuals and wasted their knowledge, while empowering those ill-suited to run an economy. He was concerned about the support for the perceived success of Soviet centralisation, when he saw this and Fascist systems as two sides of the same coin. When Reader's Digest selectively condensed Hayek's book in 1945, and presented it not so much as a warning against tyranny as a proof against socialism, it became phenomenally influential around the world. An interview with Pastor Taylor Drummond about his article “Fool's Gold?: A libertarian analysis of VanDrunen's account of state legitimacy,” which appreciatively, but critically, examines arguments in the book Politics After Christendom by Dr. David VanDrunen. Pastor Drummond introduces himself and recounts how he became a confessional, Calvinistic Baptist, and a libertarian-anarchist. He speaks about how VanDrunen's biblical arguments for the legitimacy of the state fail his own standard for justifying the state. Drummond also explains how VanDrunen's theoretical argument is at odds with his own view of law, justice, and rights, and is in tension with many of his economic and theological insights.https://reformedlibertarians.com/017Main Points Of Discussion00:00 Introduction00:32 Episode description01:50 About Pastor Drummond06:54 VanDrunen's brief biblical arguments and Drummond's response17:22 Monopoly, Noahic covenant, and negative natural rights24:26 VanDrunen's view of customary legal order27:50 Drummond's response on law and rights34:44 Need for clearly distinguishing just and unjust coercion38:56 Protectionism, sin, politicization, and inefficiency47:29 Concluding thoughtsAdditional ResourcesArticle discussed: “Fool's Gold?: A libertarian analysis of VanDrunen's account of state legitimacy,” by Taylor Drummond: https://libertarianchristians.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/CLR-5-Drummond.pdfPolitics After Christendom by David VanDrunen: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0310108845/ Taylor Drummond congregation: Grace Community Church, Allentown PA https://gracecommunityallentown.org/ Politics substack: https://thearchy.substack.com/ Theology site: https://servantofthesovereign.wordpress.com/ Other books mentioned: The Road To Serfdom by Friedrich Hayek: https://mises.org/library/book/road-serfdom The Law by Frederic Bastiat: https://mises.org/library/book/law Foundations of Economics: A Christian View by Shawn Ritenour: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1556357249/ The Conservative Mind by Russell Kirk: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0895261715/ For A New Liberty by Murray Rothbard: https://mises.org/library/book/new-liberty-libertarian-manifesto Christian Libertarian Review call for papers 2024: https://libertarianchristians.com/2024/02/03/call-for-papers-2024-volume/ The Reformed Libertarians Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute: https://libertarianchristians.com and a member of the Christians for Liberty Network: https://christiansforliberty.netAudio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com
A classic work in political philosophy, intellectual history and economics, The Road to Serfdom has inspired and infuriated politicians and scholars for half a century. Originally published in 1944, it was seen as heretical for its passionate warning against the dangers of state control over the means of production. For Hayek, the collectivist idea of...

In this episode, we discuss the ideas of economist and political philosopher F.A. Hayek as they appear in his 1944 book The Road to Serfdom. This influential book was written in response to what Hayek saw as the trend towards socialism in the mid-twentieth century and it offers his defense of “classical liberalism.” We examine the political and epistemological premises of Hayek's theory of liberty and free markets, question his assumptions on human nature and cooperation, and near the end critique his odious conflation of communism and fascism. Frederick Hayek's famous book, "The Road to Serfdom" has been read by millions and is a favorite of those who previously lived under socialist regimes. One of the biggest fans of Hayek's book was Yuri Maltsev who defected to the US after working as an economist in the USSR under Gorbachev. I'm sad to report that Yuri passed away last week. I wanted to pay tribute to his contribution to our understanding of how these brutal regimes work, and more importantly, familiarize ourselves with the characteristics so we can notice them in our own society. The battle between liberty and tyranny is ongoing and Yuri Maltsev helped us immensely with our understanding of this eternal battle. Watch this BlazeTV special free at- https://youtu.be/jt15xP8SLcg 46,990 views Premiered Sep 21, 2022 BlazeTV 1.58M subscribers A big question Glenn has always had about “The Amazing Do-Over” is: How do you get the most powerful and wealthy nation that has ever existed to accept, “You will own nothing … and be happy”? A foundational principle of this country from its very inception has been land ownership. We worked hard, were fiscally responsible, and stayed away from high debt, but the progressive era began to erode all of that. The Clinton Global Initiative recently gathered the ruling class to tell the plebes how to run their finances and called anyone who dared challenge their ideas “climate change deniers.” Glenn argues we are dangerously far down the “Road to Serfdom” and exposes the progressive playbook to keep us in line. It's a 600-year-old medieval model that's been the plan all along. We're already feeling economic pain, and yet they're playing “Game of Thrones” with our lives. Turning us into serfs is their ultimate goal. How do they finish the complete restructure of the American financial system and our way of life? Glenn connects it all on the chalkboard and details the solution to fighting back against the ruling elites. #blazetv #glennbeck #glenntv ► Subscribe to BlazeTV YouTube! https://bit.ly/2KJHuwu ► Join BlazeTV! https://get.blazetv.com/ ► Sign up for our NEWSLETTER: https://theblaze.com/newsletters Connect with us on Social Media: http://twitter.com/BlazeTV http://instagram.com/TheBlazeTV http://facebook.com/BlazeMedia WATCH more Glenn TV: https://blazetv.com/glenn BlazeTV is highly recommended by ACU. Today, The Two Mikes spoke with the noted economist Anne Bradley from the Fund for American Studies and George Mason University. Professor Bradley also is a professor of economics at the Institute of World Politics. Professor Bradley recommended that listeners read Frederick Hayek's book, The Road to Serfdom, for a well-written and understandable analysis of economic reality, a reality that appears to be entirely unknown by people like Clinton, Obama, and Biden and their economists. One of the beginnings of wisdom in economics is that the more money the government prints the higher inflation will be. Professor Bradley also noted that economists must have a sense of humility and be able to acknowledge that not all "good projects" can be afforded, and so must not be funded. Also key to a good economy is an educational system that not only teaches its students economic realities, but that they are independent actors in society and each person is solely responsible for making what they can of their lives. Neither government nor fellow citizens should be called on by individuals for things they believe to be theirs by right, instead of gaining them through personal effort and hard work. It is always and only up to the individual to identify his or her "sphere of usefulness" and then figure out how to attain employment that allows that usefulness to flourish. Here is Part 2 of Kevin and my 3rd discussion over F.A. Hayek's 'The Road to Serfdom.' In this video, we go over Chapter 4: The 'Inevitability' of Planning. In this chapter, Hayek refutes a common refrain of his time, namely that Planning was not only a desirable road for Western Democracies to go down, but that Planning was actually inevitable if the west was to survive and thrive on a global stage. This book is not only free on Audible for those with a subscription, but a PDF of the original version is available for free online, so please check those out if you get a chance. https://ctheory.sitehost.iu.edu/img/H...Check us out on locals and twitter:https://engineeringpolitics.locals.com/https://returntoreason.locals.comhttps://twitter.com/Eng_Politicshttps://twitter.com/mymundanemind?s=09
Here is Part 2 of my 4th conversation with Kevin over F.A. Hayek's 'The Road to Serfdom.' In this video we finish our discussion of Chapter 5: Planning and Democracy. As Chapter 3 discussed the incompatibility between Individualism and Collectivism, Chapter 5 discusses similar incompatibilities between Planning and Democracy. Hayek lays out this argument by demonstrating how impossible it is for those seeking to Plan a society to achieve true consensus. Hayek explains the methods Planners use to circumvent the lack of public consensus for their Plan, which range from delegating their Plan to unelected bureaucrats, to vaguely defining their Plan as pursuant to "The Common Good," or "The Common Welfare." Today's equivalent might be to claim something is a "Human Right," for example. In the absence of consensus, Planners will inevitably have to resort to all manner of coercion to achieve their utopian goals, ultimately leading to Despotism. This book is not only free on Audible for those with a subscription, but a PDF of the original version is available for free online, so please check those out if you get a chance. https://ctheory.sitehost.iu.edu/img/H...Check us out on locals and twitter:https://engineeringpolitics.locals.com/https://returntoreason.locals.comhttps://twitter.com/Eng_Politicshttps://twitter.com/mymundanemind?s=09

Here is Part 1 of Kevin and my 3rd discussion over F.A. Hayek's 'The Road to Serfdom.' In this video, we go over Chapter 3: Individualism and Collectivism. In this chapter, Hayek discusses the incompatibility between the Socialist system and the Liberal system. As with today, most disagreements are actually centered on differences in how to best attain commonly agreed upon goals, rather than the goals themselves. Here is Part 2 of @Eng_Politics and my 5th discussion over F.A. Hayek's 'The Road to Serfdom.' This video covers the first half of our discussion on Chapter 6: Planning and the Rule of Law. In this chapter, Hayek explains the 'Rule of Law' is one of the only bulwarks against totalitarianism, as it relies on objectivity and a broad understanding of societal rules. 'Planning' cannot coexist with objectivity, and therefore must abolish the Rule of Law. Hayek's prescience is once again demonstrated as he lays out the necessity of intentional discrimination in the Planner's misguided pursuit of a truly equal society. Hayek also discusses the fact that freedom leads to income inequality, but that the alternative is to use coercion to remove people's freedom, and create an equally miserable society under authoritarian Planning. This book is not only free on Audible for those with a subscription, but a PDF of the original version is available for free online, so please check those out if you get a chance. https://ctheory.sitehost.iu.edu/img/H...Check us out on locals and twitter:https://engineeringpolitics.locals.com/https://returntoreason.locals.comhttps://twitter.com/Eng_Politicshttps://twitter.com/mymundanemind?s=09
Here is Part 2 of Kevin and my 6th discussion over F.A. Hayek's 'The Road to Serfdom.' This video covers the second half of our discussion on Chapter 7: Planning and Totalitarianism. In this chapter, Hayek really begins to unpack the trajectory of Planning, hence the title. Here, Hayek expands on one way Planners begin to take over the whole of society, by seeking total control of one seemingly insignificant aspect of life- economics. Once planners are able to assert control over the means of production, they effectively gain control over *all* aspects of society, by determining the importance of every profession, product, and laborer, as they all are not filtered through the desires and goals of the Planner, rather than the individual citizen. This book is not only free on Audible for those with a subscription, but a PDF of the original version is available for free online, so please check those out if you get a chance. https://ctheory.sitehost.iu.edu/img/H...Check us out on locals and twitter:https://engineeringpolitics.locals.com/https://returntoreason.locals.comhttps://twitter.com/Eng_Politicshttps://twitter.com/mymundanemind?s=09

Here is Part 1 of my 5th conversation with Kevin over F.A. Hayek's 'The Road to Serfdom.' In the next two videos, we go over Chapter 6: Planning and The Rule of Law.

PROGRESSIVISM: OUR ROAD TO SERFDOM: ARISE AMERICA: REBUILD YOUR GOD-GIVEN CAPITALIST FOUNDATIONS by Zester and Marilyn HatfieldIs the American dream really dead? What really makes the different between a "have" and a "have not"? In Progressivism: Our Road to Serfdom, authors Zester and Marilyn Hatfield examine these questions and others in light of the historic realities of who we are, where we have come from, and where we are going in relation to wages, job security, full employment, personal wealth accumulation, and personal freedoms. The Hatfields discuss the causes and history behind the current failing economy and present a step-by-step understanding of how to rebuild our God-given capitalist foundations with greater success. It takes a candid look at how new wealth is created by current and advancing technologies. Moreover, it reveals the secrets and the inner workings of progressive socialism-the political and ideological barrier that stands between those who love America and the republic's limited form of government.Progressivism: Our Road to Serfdom presents a fascinating story of how wealth is created and its effect on all Americans-wage earners, small business owners, and equity owners both large and small. It demonstrates how the Constitution gives all Americans the unalienable right to prosper from their own labor and capital possessions.Zester Hatfield is a practicing financial consultant and holds licenses in real estate, insurance, and securities. The Road to Serfdom runs straight through GreatReset-berg. Freidrick Hayek was onto something when he said that communism and fascism, popularly believed to be political opposites, actually end in the same place: totalitarianism. There are many ways that politicians attempt to coax their constituents into a serf/lord relationship. Fear, loneliness, highlighting a common enemy, these are only a few of their tactics. Are these also being used to frame up the World Economic Forum’s ‘Great Reset?’ F.A. This is the third and final hour of a three-part exchange between the late Friedrich von Hayek, economist and Nobel laureate, and the late Leo Rosten, author and social scientist. In this segment, von Hayek evaluates economic trends and comments on the direction in which he believed we were heading at the time. Additionally, von Hayek talks about his very brief foray into psychology, writing a book called “The Sensory Order.” Though not well received, it taught him a great deal on the methodology of science. He later wrote that the theory of complex phenomena is equally the product of …

This is the second hour of a three-part exchange between the late Friedrich von Hayek, economist and Nobel laureate, and the late Leo Rosten, author and social scientist. It encompasses von Hayek’s theories and the many people and events which shaped his thoughts and career. Von Hayek spends some time discussing John Maynard Keynes and he reveals that though they shared space in the field of economics and were good friends, they eventually stopped discussing economics because their philosophies were quite different. Listen to Friedrich von Hayek and Leo Rosten Part II to learn more.
Originally recorded in 1978, this is the first session of a lively and occasionally controversial three-part interview of the late Friedrich von Hayek, economist and Nobel laureate, by the late Leo Rosten, author and social scientist. It is a wide-ranging discussion of von Hayek’s life and work, primarily in the areas of philosophy of science, political philosophy, the free will problem, and epistemology. Hayek created a furor with his book The Road to Serfdom. The book came out at a time when he was a lone voice speaking about the terrible dangers inherent in good and well-intentioned people turning powers …
Friedrich Hayek is one of the giants of 20th century economics. He did important work on everything from business cycles to psychology, earning a Nobel Prize in economics in 1974. However, Hayek is perhaps best known for his book, The Road to Serfdom. Since its publication in 1944, many leaders and politicians have cited it as a proof that countries that experiment with socialism will inevitably end up as a totalitarian state. Duke economist Bruce Caldwell says that the book's message was much more nuanced and often misinterpreted by later generations. He sets the record straight in the September issue of the Journal of Economic Literature by expanding on Hayek’s thinking and the intellectual climate in which Hayek was writing. Just as important, Caldwell’s research shows the importance of digging into the origins of economic debates. Caldwell recently spoke with the AEA’s Tyler Smith about the intellectual backdrop to The Road to Serfdom, the challenges of writing for a wider audience, and the history of economic ideas. The edited highlights of that conversation are below, and the full interview can be heard using the podcast player below.

Matt and Sam are finally joined by the show's longtime bête noire, Marshall Steinbaum, for a deep dive into the Chicago school of economics and the wreckage it's supported—from welcoming the birth defects caused by deregulating the pharmaceutical industry to justifying massive resistance to desegregation to being put in the service of Coronavirus truther-ism. Where did this iteration of libertarianism come from, intellectually and institutionally? Who are the key figures in the Chicago school? How have their ideas infected the way we all think about economics and politics? It's a sordid, depressing tale of rightwing money, intellectual dishonesty, and a gleeful desire to discipline the forces of democracy.Sources and further reading:Marshall Steinbaum, The Book That Explains Charlottesville, Boston Review, August 14, 2017Marshall Steinbaum, Economics after Neoliberalism, Boston Review, February 28, 2019Isaac Chotiner, The Contrarian Coronavirus Theory that Informed the Trump Administration, New Yorker, March 30, 2020Nancy MacLean, Democracy in Chains (Penguin-Random House, June 2017)Edward Nik-Khah, Neoliberal Pharmaceutical Science and the Chicago School of Economics (Social Studies of Science 2014, Vol. 44(4) 489–517)

Hayek sees a choice between individualism and socialism. He contrasts the Enlightenment project of liberal individualism against the collectivist ideologies of national socialism, fascism, and communism. Communism and fascism are two sides of the same coin - both categorically despise individualism. He warns against the trend away from liberalism in the West. According to Hayek, the very success of liberalism has become the cause of its decline. The liberal principles that made progress possible have come to be regarded more as obstacles to speedier progress. Freedom is cast aside in favor of hubristic collectivism. The Road to Serfdom demonstrates how collectivist ideologies lead inevitably to totalitarianism.
In this episode we examine the controversial book Road to Serfdom. Who was Hayek and what was the book Road to Serfdom all about ? How was the work viewed in the early cold war and how would it go on to effect the late Cold War ?
This week Krugman complains that workers are becoming less free: Obamacare is in danger of repeal, and more and more workers are being required to sign noncompete agreements. These things limit people's choices, says Krugman, so in a very real sense they are being made less free. Is any of this true, and is Krugman's understanding of freedom coherent? This is all especially good fodder for Contra Krugman. Show notes for Ep. 88
