Kirk has been an editorialist for a Gannett newspaper and served in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Capt. Known by many as “the real Capt. Kirk”, he has dedicated his life to his Christian faith, his family and the search for the truth regarding America's Constitutional common law roots. His understanding of the “Power of Paper” has led to the usage of affidavits in many areas. Frederic Bastiat wrote in “The Law” that if the law can be kept to its proper boundaries, it makes no difference who is elected. It is the affidavit process that has led to his numerous successes in defending his own personal liberty from government encroachments. He is the author of “Parenting the Passive Rebel” and is in the process of publishing his second book: “Officer Hanson, Compassion in Blue.” It is this book that Kirk attempts to entertain, educate and elevate the souls of the readers to make the commitment of sacrifice for a more compassionate method for handling potentially violent situations. Regular readers of my blog know I took a course, Conservatism 101, from the Leadership Institute, which led me to read conservative literature I hadn't before: Edmund Burke, Frederic Bastiat, Friedrich Hayek, Russell Kirk, and more. This reading came after I started reading and watching Milton Friedman, Julian Simon, Ayn Rand, and current followers of their work like Marian Tupy, Gale Pooley, and Alex Epstein. I had blogged about them after reading their works too. I began seeing relevance of their work to sustainability that I don't think even their fans appreciate. At a social event, I met a woman who works at the Cato Institute. I told her of what I was learning and invited her to talk about it. She said sustainability and the environment weren't her focus, but she could put me in touch with colleagues. She knew Jack Spencer from the Heritage Foundation.I share some of my background, generally left politics, but opening up to learning more from (podcast guest) Jonathan Haidt's work, then attending an event at the Trump Bedminster Golf Course, which led to learning about the Leadership Institute. There I took Conservatism 101, which led the above.Jack shares some of his background, also not starting on the political right, and how he applies the above to politics today, especially energy, regulation, subsidy, and the motivations of government employees and what he sees happen as they gain power. We don't reach the point of talking policy. I started to bring up the Spodek Method, but became so engrossed in Jack's sharing about nature, I followed up with it, especially wondering if he experienced environmentalists saying he didn't care. He clearly cares plenty about the environment. This conversation is different than nearly any I've heard on sustainability. I think you'll like it. My main flaw was my inexperience in talking about some topics so was tongue-tied at times.Jack's profile at Heritage Foundation Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

An interview with Pastor Taylor Drummond about his article “Fool's Gold?: A libertarian analysis of VanDrunen's account of state legitimacy,” which appreciatively, but critically, examines arguments in the book Politics After Christendom by Dr. David VanDrunen. Pastor Drummond introduces himself and recounts how he became a confessional, Calvinistic Baptist, and a libertarian-anarchist. He speaks about how VanDrunen's biblical arguments for the legitimacy of the state fail his own standard for justifying the state. Drummond also explains how VanDrunen's theoretical argument is at odds with his own view of law, justice, and rights, and is in tension with many of his economic and theological insights.https://reformedlibertarians.com/017Main Points Of Discussion00:00 Introduction00:32 Episode description01:50 About Pastor Drummond06:54 VanDrunen's brief biblical arguments and Drummond's response17:22 Monopoly, Noahic covenant, and negative natural rights24:26 VanDrunen's view of customary legal order27:50 Drummond's response on law and rights34:44 Need for clearly distinguishing just and unjust coercion38:56 Protectionism, sin, politicization, and inefficiency47:29 Concluding thoughtsAdditional ResourcesArticle discussed: “Fool's Gold?: A libertarian analysis of VanDrunen's account of state legitimacy,” by Taylor Drummond: https://libertarianchristians.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/CLR-5-Drummond.pdfPolitics After Christendom by David VanDrunen: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0310108845/ Taylor Drummond congregation: Grace Community Church, Allentown PA https://gracecommunityallentown.org/ Politics substack: https://thearchy.substack.com/ Theology site: https://servantofthesovereign.wordpress.com/ Other books mentioned: The Road To Serfdom by Friedrich Hayek: https://mises.org/library/book/road-serfdom The Law by Frederic Bastiat: https://mises.org/library/book/law Foundations of Economics: A Christian View by Shawn Ritenour: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1556357249/ The Conservative Mind by Russell Kirk: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0895261715/ For A New Liberty by Murray Rothbard: https://mises.org/library/book/new-liberty-libertarian-manifesto Christian Libertarian Review call for papers 2024: https://libertarianchristians.com/2024/02/03/call-for-papers-2024-volume/ The Reformed Libertarians Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute: https://libertarianchristians.com and a member of the Christians for Liberty Network: https://christiansforliberty.netAudio Production by Podsworth Media - https://podsworth.com

In his 1850 essay The Law, Bastiat railed against socialism, and argued that legitimate law isn't just the will of politicians, but instead is based on protecting the natural rights of individuals. You can see inspiration in these views from Locke, Jefferson, Paine and more. The post The Law: An Intro from the Founders to Frederic Bastiat first appeared on Tenth Amendment Center.

Frederic Bastiat, a philosopher and an economist who lived during the nineteenth century is famous today for an essay he wrote in 1857 called, "The Law". Bastiat said, "The only purpose of the law is to protect liberty and property." Clearly this is no longer the case in 21st century. The Trump Organization was sued in New York court for supposedly defrauding the State of New York by entering into a mutually beneficial loan arrangement with one or more banks in New York. New York State was not party to any of the contracts, but somehow suffered damages of more than $350 million dollars according to the ruling from the court. This is a case based on politics, plain and simple. The contract(s) with the bank(s) were fulfilled but somehow New York State is claiming damages. There's no justice in New York! That's as plain as the nose on your face! Capital and Interest by Frederic Bastiat audiobook. Frédéric Bastiat was an early 19th century French economist/statesman whose common sense essays tried to battle the rise of socialist ideology after the French revolution, where provisional governments were rivaling each other for power. Of central concern was who should control the money. How is wealth created? How should it be divided amongst the people? What services should government provide? Same questions we are asking now. This essay addresses the popular fallacy of the day that Capital should be available to all gratuitiously, without necessity of paying back loans, and looking upon any form of interest as Usury. Bastiat argued that capital is created by savings, and savings are what makes borrowing possible so the common man can get ahead and prosper, and lending is only worth the risk if the lender profits by it, via interest. He demonstrated the law of supply and demand, that, in essence, interest decreases as availability of capital increases. His basic premises is that without a leisure class (people who have money to spare over earning daily bread), there would be nothing to borrow, so that neither the common man nor society can prosper. * Joe and Sam Make There points and Agree to Disagree! - The Debate Continues! - The Gloves Are Off! * Book: The Law! - Frederic Bastiat. * What, then, is law? It is the collective organization of the individual right to lawful defense. * Three Gifts From God precede all human legislation, and are superior to it. * Life, liberty, and property do not exist because men have made laws. On the contrary, it was the fact that life, liberty, and property existed beforehand that caused men to make laws in the first place. * Each of us has a natural right — from God — to defend his person, his liberty, and his property. These are the three basic requirements of life, and the preservation of any one of them is completely dependent upon the preservation of the other two. * If every person has the right to defend even by force — his person, his liberty, and his property, then it follows that a group of men have the right to organize and support a common force to protect these rights constantly. * The principle of collective right — its reason for existing, its lawfulness — is based on individual right. And the common force that protects this collective right cannot logically have any other purpose or any other mission than that for which it acts as a substitute. Thus, since an individual cannot lawfully use force against the person, liberty, or property of another individual, then the common force — for the same reason — cannot lawfully be used to destroy the person, liberty, or property of individuals or groups. * nothing can be more evident than this: The law is the organization of the natural right of lawful defense. It is the substitution of a common force for individual forces. And this common force is to do only what the individual forces have a natural and lawful right to do: to protect persons, liberties, and properties; to maintain the right of each, and to cause justice to reign over us all.
A long episode about a short book. "The Law" is absolutely essential reading for everybody who believes in limited government, and it should make the powerful word "plunder" your favorite weapon to add to your arguments.

In this captivating podcast, Michael shares his extraordinary journey from a troubled upbringing in a poor neighbourhood to a champion of personal responsibility and rational egoism. Growing up surrounded by criminal influences, Michael observed that not all impoverished children turned to a life of crime. This realisation ignited his belief in free will and personal responsibility. With divorced and detached parents, Michael struggled to form healthy attachments, leading him down a destructive path that ultimately resulted in a 27-year prison sentence.During his incarceration, Michael embarked on a profound transformation through the power of books. Starting with self-development classics like "How to Win Friends and Influence People," he delved into the works of influential thinkers such as Frederic Bastiat, Ayn Rand, and Milton Friedman. The concept of non-contradiction resonated deeply with him, inspiring a commitment to rationality and personal growth.Within the confines of prison, Michael formed an unlikely friendship with a socialist named Brent. Through impassioned debates grounded in objective principles, Michael successfully converted Brent to embrace rationality, culminating in their collaborative book, "Down the Rabbit Hole."Drawing from his studies in psychology, Michael discovered that criminal thinking thrived on irrationality and contradictions. By adopting rationality and ruthlessly honest self-reflection, he transformed his own mindset and embarked on a path of change.During the interview, James and Michael delve into the concept of rights and the ethical theories that underpin them. They explore how the recognition of individual rights, including life, liberty, and property, serves as a foundation for a just society. They also delve into the dangers of an apathetic government and the importance of a vigilant populace in protecting their rights.Don't miss this thought-provoking episode of "The Rational Egoist," where Michael Liebowitz shares his inspiring journey of personal growth, rationality, and the pursuit of liberty. May Yahweh, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you! How can I bear by myself the weight and burden of you and your strife? It's late at night, and my dyslexic tongue is stumbling, but I think I made sense with my look at some of the week's news. As always, there's a lot to talk about: The failed efforts to destroy Tucker, the problems for the left with Hispanic mass murderers, words that shall not be spoken, the things that leftists see and don't see (and how that drives policy), and a remembrance of a very good judge.
Guest: Dr. Jason Snyder Note: Just to clarify, I do not believe that aliens built the pyramids in Egypt. ;-) Andrew Murray - Humility And so pride, or the loss of humility, is the root of every sin and evil. And so Jesus came to bring humility back to earth, to make us partakers of it, and by it to save us. His humility is our salvation. His salvation is our humility. No tree can grow except on the root from which it sprang. If this [humility] be the root of the tree, its nature must be seen in every branch and leaf and fruit. If humility be the first, the all-including grace of the life of Jesus–if humility be the secret of his atonement–then the health and strength of our spiritual life will entirely depend upon our putting this grace first too, and making humility the chief thing we admire in him, the chief thing we ask of him, the one thing for which we sacrifice all else. Brother, are you clothed in humility? Ask your daily life. Ask Jesus. Ask your friends. Ask the world. Third, it is only by the indwelling of Christ in his divine humility that we become truly humble. We have our pride from another–from Adam; we must have our humility from Another too. Gentle and Lowly - Dane Ortlund Matthew 11:29 - Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart [humble]... Humility - being “God-reliant” and not “self-reliant” 1 Peter 5:5-6 - Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you… The point in saying that Jesus is lowly is that he is ACCESSIBLE. Are you accessible to those you love? Are you accessible to those in need? Are there dates/times on your calendar that demonstrate your accessibility? Orange County Rescue Mission - Jim Palmer, President Mission Statement: Minister the love of of Jesus Christ to the LEAST, the LAST, and the LOST Good to Great - Jim Collins When Collins interviewed people who worked for these leaders, he says they “continually used words like quiet, humble, modest, reserved, shy, gracious, mild-mannered, self-effacing, understanding, did not believe his own clippings, and so forth” to describe them. Soldier, Statesman, Peacemaker: Leadership Lessons from George C. Marshall by Jack Uldrich Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't by Simon Sinek The Law by Frederic Bastiat - socialism is terrible for both the giver and the recipient, the giver is not allowed to sacrifice for the betterment of his brothers, the recipient is not allowed to appreciate the gift from another. Humility gets God's attention This is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. Isaiah 66:2 Humility - not thinking less about yourself…but thinking about yourself less… Humility - honestly assessing ourselves in light of God's holiness and our sinfulness Pride is the only poison that is good for us when swallowed. Claude-Frederic Bastiat was a French economist and was described as one of the most brilliant economic journalist who ever lived. He was influential in his thinking and sheds light on economic and political issues. He has been cited in schools of economics in many countries. The word sustainability is rather slippery. We're told that our current energy consumption is “unsustainable,” and are thus cajoled into spending billions on Green New Deal type legislation by politicians and celebrities who criss-cross the country on jumbo jets. Even allegedly “clean” energy alternatives to goal and gas require material resources that often dwarf the emissions they're supposed to offset. It's not enough to just stop burning oil—sustainability proponents have to propose something to replace it. Point this inconvenient truth out, and you'll likely hear the retort that a least the projects create jobs in the Green Economy.Mike Munger, prolific blogger and Professor of Political Science, Economics, and Public Policy at Duke University, has another name for the typical thinking behind sustainability: sophistry. His latest article for AIER quotes Frederic Bastiat's “Economic Sophisms” at length to make the critical point that costs are not benefits. Destroying wealth in order to create jobs is a losing proposition.Munger, a modern-day Bastiat, skewers today's environmentalist sophists just by showing the logical conclusion of their preferred policies: “Burn all the gas-powered cars? Jobs! Tear down all the oil and gas-powered power plants, so we have shortages of electricity? So many jobs!” Munger returns to the show this Sunday to explore the seen vs. the unseen in green energy and sustainability. We'll focus on one of my personal bugaboos—recycling—and Mike will explain why it's typically worse for the environment than just throwing stuff away. Finally, we'll revisit Mike's clear-eyed defense of capitalism, Is Capitalism Sustainable? The question of sustainability boils down to this: how can we best fulfill the needs of the current generations without compromising the needs of future generations? We can talk all day about alternative energy, but Munger notes that there is no to alternative capitalism. Only the market can solve our sustainability woes.

In this episode, The Annuity Man and Jay Zawatsky discuss: The definition of good money Why both fiat and bitcoin is bad money Retiring with gold and silver Jay's personal investment strategy Key Takeaways: If you have money that can store the value of your labor and preserve its purchasing power over long spans of time, then it is good money. Throughout history, only one checked the box for both of those, and that's gold. Any currency that can be created ex nihilo (out of nothingness) is bad money, and unfortunately, we're plagued with a lot of it. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies count as bad money, but it might surprise you that the U.S. dollar and other fiat currencies also count as bad. Purchasing gold and silver is a good way to enter your retirement with good money. The ideal strategy is to own physical bullion in an offshore account held by a private entity, however, one can always start by owning silver coins. Having at least 10% or 15% percent of your assets invested in gold and silver is a good practice if you want to protect yourself in the case of calamity or inflation. However, even if nothing catastrophic happens, gold still retains its value. Jay's barbell approach has two sides: one is gold and silver, while the other is cash and cash equivalents. Meaning treasury bills and MYGAs. Guest: Rick Green The Honorable Rick Green is a former Texas State Representative, a lawyer, and a successful entrepreneur who has built several businesses from the ground up. His goal is to help Americans to become salt and light in every area of life and to understand America's Godly history and foundation. He currently travels the nation speaking for WallBuilders, teaching on the U.S. Constitution, and founded the Torch of Freedom Foundation and Patriot Academy. He resides in Dripping Springs, TX with his wife, Kara, and their entire family. Check out more information about Rick Green and his ministry to train people to understand and engage in our political process through the Patriot Academy. Do you want to live in freedom or tyranny? “Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigues of supporting it.” Thomas Paine, The Crisis, Sept. 12, 1777 “Perhaps you and I have lived too long with this miracle to properly be appreciative. Freedom is a fragile thing and it's never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. And those in world history who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again.” Ronald Reagan, Then-Governor of California, Inaugural Address, January 5, 1967 Socialism - the “means of production” is controlled by the government - who decides what you'll do, who you'll work for, what freedoms and opportunities you'll have - those are the questions that clearly differentiate a “democracy” or “free market economy” from one that is socialist. The Law by Frederic Bastiat - want to know why socialism won't work and is actually harmful to everyone involved - read this! If there is a problem in society, whose responsibility is it to remedy the situation? Is it the responsibility of the individual, the family, the church, or the government? There are different roles and responsibilities for each - but once a task has been absorbed by the government, it's difficult to shift those responsibilities and activities back to either the individual/family or the church. How to get engaged: Take a Constitution course. Understand the “political party” system. The “primary” election is the opportunity to select which food will be on the tables. The “general” election is selecting from the food that is already on the table. Also, understand how the political party system affects legislation - the party that has the majority within a given legislature has the power to assign committees and bills to particular committees - a very significant power. Do the best you can with what you have where you are. Understand this principle when you go vote - there isn't a perfect candidate, but you need to select from the “best” of the choices available…and party DOES matter when you vote. For more information, check out Ivoterguide.com Make a financial contribution to a candidate of your choice! Electoral College - think of the World Series. A team (candidate) has to win a majority of the games - it's not a contest to see who scores the most runs! Being an educated and engaged citizen is a commandment, a duty, a responsibility - as a citizen of the United States of America, being an educated voter is the first step to being an educated and engaged citizen! Frederic Bastiat was a principled, valiant defender of liberty. His stories, such as the broken window fallacy, portray how people see the short-term economic benefits of things, but long-term consequences are often unseen. In This Episode: You have likely heard of cryptocurrency and you may even know a little about Bitcoin, but how much do you really know about its future? We have been told that pursuit of the dollar is what your life should be based on, but what happens if the value of the dollar is decreasing every single day? As people have the ability to store their value in a system that is easier and cheaper to enforce and that is actually more secure, what happens to the asset values of things like real estate, gold, and oil? It's a pretty radical concept. Bob Burnett joins Jim on the podcast this week to talk about why we have to educate ourselves about what is happening with regards to Bitcoin, the problem it solves, and the differences between the ways the dollar and Bitcoin are managed. Bob was in the technology industry around the time the internet was really gaining traction. He rode that wave and believes that Bitcoin will be bigger than the internet; that it is the currency of the future. Governments are corrupt when it comes to monetary policy, but they have no control over bitcoin, it is incorruptible. So if you don't know anything about Bitcoin, Jim and Bob provide a starting point for you today. There are big pieces of the world that would prefer not to work in dollars, and the opportunity for that to happen is now there. Russia has already recently accepted Bitcoin as an official currency, and there are huge implications to this. In this episode, Jim and Bob discuss this further and explain the debasement of the dollar, and why Bitcoin provides the opportunity to think about wealth in a different way. Bob shares some important things to think about when it comes to buying Bitcoin, and explains why he intends on investing significantly less in assets that use the traditional method of property rights enforcement and more in investments and assets that have this new, more efficient way of enforcing property rights. In This Episode: What is money? We use it, we spend it, and doing so gives us the illusion that we understand it. But very few people understand the minutiae of money, and even people who ought to know better don't understand how money comes into existence. If people understood that we are all financial slaves for as long as we are a part of the current banking system, they would no longer subscribe to it. People need a way to plan for the future, and in terms of financial planning, it is very difficult when you don't know what is happening and there is so much uncertainty. But there is an alternative, a way to escape the current system and plan for the future: Bitcoin. Before you can understand Bitcoin, you need to think about the money that you do understand. You need to compare it to what you do know, like stocks and the U.S. Dollar. Bitcoin expert Jimmy Song got into the Bitcoin space in 2011 and has since written four books on the topic. He joins Jim on the podcast this week to share his expertise and the basics of Bitcoin in a clear, comprehensible way to help you understand it more, and see why it is a way to get out of a monetary system that, among so many other issues, makes it harder to follow God. In this episode, Jim and Jimmy talk about the financial uncertainty caused by the current financial system most people subscribe to, fiat money and how it leads people to high time preference behavior, why that's a bad thing, and much more. Learn the problem with money as we know it, how Bitcoin can help give more certainty and security in our lives, and some of the most common misconceptions around Bitcoin that we hear today. As many reflect on the chaos and violence of January 6, many are missing the much larger picture. Frederic Bastiat wrote in The Law, “When law and morality contradict each other, the citizen has the cruel alternative of either losing his moral sense or losing his respect for the law.” January 6, 2020 is a prime example of this. How does one attempt to see the unseen? The question may seem more like a Zen koan than vital concern of economists. The idea of tracing hidden consequences of different policies, however, must be discovered anew with every generation of policymaker and economic adviser.Frederic Bastiat is credited with the original framing of the "seen" vs the "unseen," using the parable a broken window to expose the common fallacy that destruction begets economic growth. Later, Henry Hazlitt would demolish the recycled Keynesian ideas in his time, arguing that government can stimulate "aggregate demand" by spending tax dollars on make-work projects like digging holes. In both cases, the resources used to stimulate spending come out of the pockets of people who would have otherwise spent the money more productively. This year, Ryan Bourne continues the noble tradition of Bastiat and Hazlitt in his new book Economics in One Virus – a clever spin on Hazlitt's famous "Economics in One Lesson." What can COVID teach us about the pitfalls of government intervention? Bourne lays out the high costs and murky benefits of policies such as lockdowns and mandatory masking, when voluntary alternatives would likely had achieved the same if not better results in terms of mitigating spread, without the devastating effects on small business.Almost two years into "two weeks to slow the spread," we will revisit the problem of the pandemic from an economic standpoint. Bourne reminds us that economics is not all about dollars and cents – it's the stuff of our daily lives, including the trade-offs that determine our fundamental well-being. To ignore costs simply because they cannot be measured, such as the relationships weakened or business lost, is to commit the oldest economic fallacy in the book.
Join us as we thoughtfully discuss the purpose of government, why it matters, and what we can do to protect our freedoms as taught in the principles found in The Law by Frederic Bastiat.
What is a Conservative? What is a Leftist? Words matter. Here I define the what is a conservative and what is a leftist, give some practical examples, and discuss that if you're on the right or the left, we often use the same words, but they have very different meanings to those on the two sides. We may be saying the same words, but the MEANING of those words are NOT the same, and the same word has VERY different meanings according to who is using them. What is the definition of the word “liberal” to those on the left and those on the right? Also, I turn to Google for these definitions, and discuss the differences according to Google, and how these definitions define the laws we have now. Book discussed: “The Law” by Frederic Bastiat.

We continue with Paul Krugman's suggestion of a fake threat of aliens invading to stimulate a depressed economy. We look at a blog post he had written for the New York Times where he revealed his inspiration for the blessings of fear and destruction: World War II. Unfortunately, even many conservatives and Christians think like Krugman that war spending helps an economy grow or get out of a slump. We look at the parable of a broken window from Frederic Bastiat to see that destruction really is destruction. Are we seeing the final throes of the drug war in America? What's in the News with stories on an update to Charlie Gard, mandatory vaccines, life imitating satire, the Nevada Governor must be high, Big Brother is garbage, eugenics, and civil asset forfeiture is expanding. A New Hampshire, It's Like This Too segment on the many wins we've had so far, and a Herding Cats segment on the Freecoast Festival. This episode is brought to you by Swarm City, a decentralized commerce meta-platform that allows people to participate in commerce without interference from a third party. WHAT'S RUSTLING MY JIMMIES Incredibly, we are now faced with a US state that could potentially be ending the war on drugs as we know it. The Oregon Legislature passed a bill Thursday decriminalizing small amounts of six hard drugs, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and ecstasy. The bill, HB 2355, will now go to Governor Kate Brown's desk. She said she is looking forward to signing this bill into law. It decriminalizes possession of the drugs so long as the offender has neither a felony nor more than two prior drug convictions on record. WHAT'S IN THE NEWS First of all, I want to apologize for this episode being late. I have been exceptionally busy the last few weeks, but I'm back on track now and should be able to get this podcast back to its regularly scheduled time on the next episode. And, keep an ear out for news about a brand new podcast coming up on the Pax Libertas Productions network very soon!
