What happens when fashion, politics, and fraud collide in the glittering halls of Versailles? Tune in and find out about this gem-uine (yeah that really was awful) controversy! In this episode, we'll take a closer look at L'Affaire du Collier de la Reine or the Affair of the Queen's Necklace. This scandal shook the French monarchy, dragged Marie Antoinette's name through the mud, and became a turning point in the lead-up to the French Revolution. Come for the diamonds, stay for the the glitter, the grift, and the guillotine. Oliver Goldsmith (born Nov. 10, 1730, Kilkenny West, County Westmeath, Ire.—died April 4, 1774, London) was an Anglo-Irish essayist, poet, novelist, dramatist, and eccentric, made famous by such works as the series of essays The Citizen of the World, or, Letters from a Chinese Philosopher (1762), the poem The Deserted Village (1770), the novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), and the play She Stoops to Conquer (1773).Goldsmith was the son of an Anglo-Irish clergyman, the Rev. Charles Goldsmith, curate in charge of Kilkenny West, County Westmeath. At about the time of his birth, the family moved into a substantial house at nearby Lissoy, where Oliver spent his childhood. Much has been recorded concerning his youth, his unhappy years as an undergraduate at Trinity College, Dublin, where he received the B.A. degree in February 1749, and his many misadventures before he left Ireland in the autumn of 1752 to study in the medical school at Edinburgh. His father was now dead, but several of his relations had undertaken to support him in his pursuit of a medical degree. Later on, in London, he came to be known as Dr. Goldsmith—Doctor being the courtesy title for one who held the Bachelor of Medicine—but he took no degree while at Edinburgh nor, so far as anyone knows, during the two-year period when, despite his meagre funds, which were eventually exhausted, he somehow managed to make his way through Europe. The first period of his life ended with his arrival in London, bedraggled and penniless, early in 1756.Goldsmith's rise from total obscurity was a matter of only a few years. He worked as an apothecary's assistant, school usher, physician, and as a hack writer—reviewing, translating, and compiling. Much of his work was for Ralph Griffiths's Monthly Review. It remains amazing that this young Irish vagabond, unknown, uncouth, unlearned, and unreliable, was yet able within a few years to climb from obscurity to mix with aristocrats and the intellectual elite of London. Such a rise was possible because Goldsmith had one quality, soon noticed by booksellers and the public, that his fellow literary hacks did not possess—the gift of a graceful, lively, and readable style. His rise began with the Enquiry into the Present State of Polite Learning in Europe (1759), a minor work. Soon he emerged as an essayist, in The Bee and other periodicals, and above all in his Chinese Letters. These essays were first published in the journal The Public Ledger and were collected as The Citizen of the World in 1762. The same year brought his Life of Richard Nash, of Bath, Esq. Already Goldsmith was acquiring those distinguished and often helpful friends whom he alternately annoyed and amused, shocked and charmed—Samuel Johnson, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Percy, David Garrick, Edmund Burke, and James Boswell. The obscure drudge of 1759 became in 1764 one of the nine founder-members of the famous Club, a select body, including Reynolds, Johnson, and Burke, which met weekly for supper and talk. Goldsmith could now afford to live more comfortably, but his extravagance continually ran him into debt, and he was forced to undertake more hack work. He thus produced histories of England and of ancient Rome and Greece, biographies, verse anthologies, translations, and works of popular science. These were mainly compilations of works by other authors, which Goldsmith then distilled and enlivened by his own gift for fine writing. Some of these makeshift compilations went on being reprinted well into the 19th century, however.By 1762 Goldsmith had established himself as an essayist with his Citizen of the World, in which he used the device of satirizing Western society through the eyes of an Oriental visitor to London. By 1764 he had won a reputation as a poet with The Traveller, the first work to which he put his name. It embodied both his memories of tramping through Europe and his political ideas. In 1770 he confirmed that reputation with the more famous Deserted Village, which contains charming vignettes of rural life while denouncing the evictions of the country poor at the hands of wealthy landowners. In 1766 Goldsmith revealed himself as a novelist with The Vicar of Wakefield (written in 1762), a portrait of village life whose idealization of the countryside, sentimental moralizing, and melodramatic incidents are underlain by a sharp but good-natured irony. In 1768 Goldsmith turned to the theatre with The Good Natur'd Man, which was followed in 1773 by the much more effective She Stoops to Conquer, which was immediately successful. This play has outlived almost all other English-language comedies from the early 18th to the late 19th century by virtue of its broadly farcical horseplay and vivid, humorous characterizations.During his last decade Goldsmith's conversational encounters with Johnson and others, his foolishness, and his wit were preserved in Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson. Goldsmith eventually became deeply embroiled in mounting debts despite his considerable earnings as an author, though, and after a short illness in the spring of 1774 he died.-bio via Britannica This is a public episode. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Austrian-British economist Friedrich Hayek's The Road to Serfdom (1944) in which Hayek (1899-1992) warned that the way Britain was running its wartime economy would not work in peacetime and could lead to tyranny. His target was centralised planning, arguing this disempowered individuals and wasted their knowledge, while empowering those ill-suited to run an economy. He was concerned about the support for the perceived success of Soviet centralisation, when he saw this and Fascist systems as two sides of the same coin. When Reader's Digest selectively condensed Hayek's book in 1945, and presented it not so much as a warning against tyranny as a proof against socialism, it became phenomenally influential around the world. On Monday, 7 October, Nicholas Canny MRIA delivered this lecture as part of the Dublin Festival of History in the Royal Irish Academy. Spenser's View has, for centuries, been treated variously as a trove of prejudiced antiquarian lore useful for disparaging Irish people at moments of crisis, and as a store house of evidence that the English government engaged upon an Irish genocide in Elizabethan times. This lecture by Nicolas Canny, MRIA, offers a radical re-appraisal of the manuscript copy that Spenser left to posterity in 1596, and asks what motivated Spenser to take time from poetic composition to write this prose dialogue, what circumstances influenced his composition of different passages, and what sources and methods he used to underpin the ideas advanced by his interlocutors?

MOD episodes have no shelf-life or expiration date. Our focus is principled so each episode reflects the immediate stability of our Present State of Knowing Awareness along with the unstable impressions manifest by ever-changing obsessive thoughts.Sobriety is recovery from the insanity of symptomatic compulsive behaviors. Emotional sobriety is sane living. Honestly facing the induced nature of insanity's haunting sensations is to watch these foggy notions dissolve. Resolution requires constant reapplication. Dissolution sees nothing so to see this leaves nothing left to solve. Delusions like lies only seem to exist as long as we believe in them by thinking we have nothing to do with them as though there is something to have nothing to do with. All we struggle with are present thoughts we think are reality rather than concede they are nothing more or less than imagined - a foggy notion. There is no conflict in Truth as Reality since our universal existence = Light = Life = Love. In mathematics and Life problems = the solution. There are no problems unsolved in Reality only in thought misapplied to nature's order. Life does not pose problems. Humans create problems when thinking about Life's natural order incorrectly. Maintaining these beliefs causes disorder; socially, mentally and emotionally. Thinking is not inherently obsessive. Emotions inherit the chaos and commotion of obsessive thoughts that are bent into a vicious circular cycle going round and round trying to straighten things out. Lies re-lie on the claim they are the only thing they can never be: true. It is what we each think of what we see and hear that determines our experience. If we can make things worse we can get better at expressing nature that = well-being. If Reality is not limited to thought - and need not be thought of to Be - do we grieve or fear death or is it the loss of the ideas we think define us as humans, as bodies with brains that think - that we are afraid to give up thinking our life depends on them? Could it be that Life depends on the delusion of insanity? Can we ever pay enough tribute to passing life-forms by mistaking the nature of our existence to be nothing more than a temporal body whose inevitable success is failure?Need we only think the best of those gone before noticing that same essence is in all those that remain with their remains? If there is any possible tribute could it be worth paying accurate attention to those now rather than wait for them to be "gone" and wonder why we didn't? It is what we do now with all that we have, which is all there is, that primarily impacts our human experience simultaneously with all that is and all that are. Inspiration or desperation will manifest effects that reflect like a mirror in our experience based on our choice. .contact@mentalobsession.com
Delusions like lies only seem to exist as long as we believe in them by thinking we have nothing to do with them as though there actually is something to have nothing to do with. We will not Zoom In or Out the last two Sundays of December. Honestly facing the induced nature of insanity's haunting sensations dissolve. Thinking is not inherently obsessive. Emotions inherit the chaos and commotion of obsessive thoughts. It is what we each do with what we see and hear that determines our experience. If we can makes things worse we can get better, at expressing our Being nature. NOTICE, CONSIDER, IMAGINE: We are human having a spiritual experience - or we are spiritual having a human experience. Make a choice and notice what occurs. If a sense of stability and curious awareness develops then living with the decision may be warranted and right. If the lingering results have you feel gripped with conflict, instability, and a tendency to want to "feel better“, "make it right”, or feel stuck or disconnected these conditions are centered in how thinking is used. These conditions can be high or low grade and like viruses persist beyond any welcome. Stability makes mental instability obvious. Feeling out of sorts, out of place, disconnected, or alone would never occur if our human experience was not stable and aware, at least at its rooted source, that we are always as we are, when and where we are - here and now. Consider these thoughts:You are as we all are - always where and when we are: Here Now. The moment is always new so it never gets old. All possibility is always possible. Done is over and done. The past is nothing more than a thought. The Present is the culmination of all that has ever happened. To fix the past is to reckon with the present. This is the same for the seeming future as it is only imagined. Once the future is present. like the past was, it is no longer there and then but here and now. To take imagination so seriously as to think fantasy is reality - is insanity. There is no possibility of insight developed by ignoring that which is in sight - That rather than what is happening. Sub-stance is fundamental to all life-forms as under-standing is the basis for expressing our human functional capacity. The indivisible substance seems invisible as long as it is misunderstood. Under-standing and Sub-stance are the foundation of principled choices, as they are both firmly under where we stand; and the positions we take. Essence is essential; not negotiable or optional. Maligned thoughts do not change Reality but manifest inner conflict, emotional turmoil and mental anguish in our human experience.Nature is natural. Our nature is nature and natural. Obsessive thinking is an insane possibility That is unnatural, unhealthy, unreasonable, illogical,/insane, and preposterous. We already answered when and where above. Now - consider THAT which is happening is not in question or doubt like what, who, why, and how. Choices are what thoughts are and can be based on inspiration or desperation. The consequence of either is the basis of both That will grow as long as the seed is nourished. Evidence of our Absolute Freedom is that the Present is always new. Thinking we are condemned to repeat the past is a choice made freely in the present to feel condemned by them or then. .contact@mentalobsession.com

MOD episodes have no shelf-life or expiration date. Our focus is principled so each episode reflects the immediate stability of our Present State of Knowing Awareness along with the unstable impressions that are the manifestation of ever-changing obsessive thoughts.Sobriety is recovery from the insanity of symptomatic compulsive behaviors. Emotional sobriety is the sane dissolution of the mental dis-ease of obsessive thinking that is central to all addictive behaviors. Honestly facing the induced nature of insanity dissolves the haunting images and their effects only thought to be true - thus we think it is all we can do. Recovery from any compulsion lays bare other compulsions. Any relief from one compulsion serves notice of others. Compulsions, one and all, are trying to escape the seemingly interminable nature of obsessive thoughts. The dis-easiness, discomfort, and disturbance of obsessive thoughts is the primary addiction to reactive, impulsive, and compulsive behaviors. Obsessive mental attachment is not a curse or accident. It is a repulsive mental “gag reflex or knee-jerk” automated reaction to the misuse of thinking that thinking is reality rather than imagined. Problems with belief, expectations, judgments, and a host of other social ailments and relational conflicts result from this preoccupation with thinking that has no basis in reality. It is not a coincidence that trying to feel better is common. Asking what is worse that we want to feel better than is uncommon. Common sense becomes uncommon within this reversed order of thought. Addiction attempts to turn impossibility into possibility, false into truth, and fantasy into reality. Aptly named mental and physical disorders are also reflections of these backward unhealthy attachments. Trying to chronically feel better by avoiding what is worse ignores and reinforces what is mentally wrong. Constantly refilling a tire with air would be ridiculous if fixing the leak was possible. It is no different with obsessive, addictive, attachment to thinking. Honesty can only come from the experience we each have. While anyone can think they think they can tell us what or how to do what we do - they Av not and do not. It is our prerogative to think as we do by choosing thoughts and getting exactly what we have - regardless of what we think we're thinking.Facing thought honestly as the cause of honestly dissolves obsessive problems rather than acting mentally defective trying to prove inner conflict will surrender as we continue to maintain it.Carry on. .contact@mentalobsession.com
It is early spring 1644, and Europeans are fighting Indians in New Netherland and Maryland. In Virginia, though, it is quiet. It has been twelve years since the Second Anglo-Powhatan war ended after a decade of fighting that began the day the sky fell, March 22, 1622. On that date Opechancanough sprung his colony-wide ambush of the English settlements along the James. Indian soldiers loyal to the Powhatan confederacy killed almost four hundred English and other European settlers on that day, and many more in the years that followed. But peace had come in 1632, and despite occasional crises that might have triggered war, the old chief had kept that peace. We covered Opechancanough and the Second Anglo-Powhatan War in three episodes more than a year ago, “Who Was Opechancanough?,” “Opechancanough's War,” and “After the Sky Fell,” which are definitely useful background if you have not listened to them, or haven't listened to them in some time. The peace would end on April 18, 1644, and that is the story of this episode. Emotional sobriety is the sane dissolution of the mental dis-ease of obsessive thinking that is central to all addictive behaviors by honestly facing the delusional nature of insanity. For those souls and sailors who imagined the horizon was the end of the world it was not the horizon that spelled doom is was their thinking. Today is no different as we witness insane behavior in hyper-reactive defense of maintaining limited ideas as reality it is not what is beyond our thoughts that cause dread but the nature of imagining the content of thought is reality that feels full of fear. Righteousness is never right while rightness is never wrong. We Know We Know as We Are Aware We Are Aware. The beautiful irony of the horizon is that it can never be reached. It moves and we approach as what was there but unseen I'd revealed. Only half of any sphere can ever be seen simultaneously. There is no greater primary conflict that undermines the stability of our enormous human capacity than to imagine Reality and who we are is limited to what and how we think. The Present nature of our existence is all there is to Know since IT IS Absolute, without variation, articulation, color, discrimination, inequity or change. To think we don't know what we cannot see is to think we are solely reliant and only a product of our thoughts. This form of thought makes reality untrue and truth unreal. This line of insane thinking has our twisted thoughts think our experience is happening to us rather than being caused by us. There are no secrets, victims, fear or insanity in Truth or Reality. Cause manifests effects. Having wrong thoughts about reality as reality is as discomforting as it is disturbing - for perfectly good reason.Principles don't change. Obsessive thoughts constantly change what is thought about reality, truth, and life. Lies are backward delusional attempts to reverse nature's order. Our integrated experience is Omniscient (Intuition / Knowing) and the stable unchanging basis for our Absolute Being Awareness and thus our human nature. There is nothing to achieve, nothing more or less to give, forgive, give up or forget, no place to go and nothing to become if an Absolute Infinite Source exist then all that are and all that is cannot be exceptions to this. If this is the case then the cases we make to deny our spiritual nature is a malady in thought, delusion and insanity not Reality. We are all free to think what we want so it is our decision to choose that determines not only our but the human condition. Nobody can do this for you since you are Free and the freedom of this independence is the abundance of our intimate and seamless interactive connection. It may seem grandiose to imagine our basis is Infinite or Absolute. It is certainly grandiose and humiliating to imagine that it is not - if IT IS. This is not theoretical since it is perfectly applicable: efficient, effective and practical. Try it on. Reality and truth do not depend on unlimited faith, belief or hope. Any amount applied will be confirmed by the natural alignment of thought following the leader. Carry on. .contact@mentalobsession.co.contact@mentalobsession.com

The Transfiguration of Our Lord The Collect: Rite II: O God, who on the holy mount revealed to chosen witnesses your well-beloved Son, wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistening: Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may by faith behold the King in his beauty; who with you, O Father, and you, O Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Old Testament: Exodus 34:29-35 29Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. 31But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. 32Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 33When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; 34but whenever Moses went in before the Lordto speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded,35the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him. Psalm: Psalm 99 or 99:5-9 [1 The Lord is King; let the people tremble; * he is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth shake. 2 The Lord is great in Zion; * he is high above all peoples. 3 Let them confess his Name, which is great and awesome; * he is the Holy One. 4 “O mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity; * you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.”] 5 Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God and fall down before his footstool; * he is the Holy One. 6 Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his Name, * they called upon the Lord, and he answered them. 7 He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; * they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them. 8 O Lord our God, you answered them indeed; * you were a God who forgave them, yet punished them for their evil deeds. 9 Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God and worship him upon his holy hill; * for the Lord our God is the Holy One. Epistle: 2 Peter 1:13-21 13I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to refresh your memory,14since I know that my death will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things. 16For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” 18We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. 19So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. Gospel: Luke 9:28-36 28Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” —not knowing what he said. 34While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” 36When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

Back in the days of Web2's infancy, budding The Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin had a hunch about how a few Silicon Valley newcomers could turn the business landscape on its head – when others didn't want to believe it. That instinct proved to be right and eventually inspired her to build the technology publication The Information, which nine and a half years in boasts a fiercely dedicated subscriber base. We sit down with the founder to talk about how she's creating stories to serve the next 50 years, the state of reporting in an era of disinformation, and the female founder conundrum.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our paper Managing the Transition to Widespread Metagenomic Monitoring: Policy Considerations for Future Biosurveillance, was recently published in Health Security. TL;DR Metagenomic sequencing is a really good thing, and lots of people are working on making the technologies work. But getting the tech to work is only half of the problem - we also need it to be implementable and useful for policy, and legally acceptable. There are a bunch of important questions which need to be addressed to make sure this isn't a problem, and the paper intends to start a discussion of how to solve those problems - so that a decade from now, we don't look back and say that the technology works, but it's not going to be used for pandemic prevention because of these other issues, which are far harder or impossible to fix post-hoc. This paper serves to put these problems on the agenda now so they can be addressed by the relevant academic, policy, advocacy and professional communities. Abstract The technological possibilities and future public health importance of metagenomic sequencing have received extensive attention, but there has been little discussion about the policy and regulatory issues that need to be addressed if metagenomic sequencing is adopted as a key technology for biosurveillance. In this article, we introduce metagenomic monitoring as a possible path to eventually replacing current infectious disease monitoring models. Many key enablers are technological, whereas others are not. We therefore highlight key policy challenges and implementation questions that need to be addressed for “widespread metagenomic monitoring” to be possible. Policymakers must address pitfalls like fragmentation of the technological base, private capture of benefits, privacy concerns, the usefulness of the system during nonpandemic times, and how the future systems will enable better response. If these challenges are addressed, the technological and public health promise of metagenomic sequencing can be realized. The paper is broken down into 3 sections: Present State of Biosurveillance (Where we are) Potential Metagenomic Monitoring Futures (Qualities of an ideal metagenomic future) Way Points and Obstacles in a Transition (How to get from here to there) Present State of Biosurveillance Global biosurveillance efforts together only provide partial coverage. Existing genomic data collection and analysis is often siloed and very difficult to integrate for a comprehensive disease landscape. Biosurveillance efforts that have tended to maintain funding are foodborne pathogens and rare reportable diseases. Potential Metagenomic Monitoring Futures To transition to Widespread Metagenomic Monitoring (WMGM) responsibly and with maximized biosecurity benefits, there needs to be a common understanding of qualities we expect to see in a high-investment and ambitious scenario. See this section for specifics. Way Points and Obstacles in a Transition We mention some antecedents of a WMGM along with a table of Critical Technological Advances. For example, Shean and Greninger1 propose a near-term future resting on widespread deployment of clinical sampling. Another near-term possibility is the Nucleic Acid Observatory,2 which proposed ongoing wastewater and watershed sampling across the United States to find sequences that recently emerged or are increasing in frequency, indicating a potential new pathogen or other notable events. We identify the following as systemic obstacles on the path to WMGM which need to be addressed by the relevant professional communities and institutions: Suboptimal use and high prices ...
Supporting the BPO Industry and Driving the Digital Transformation of Businesses in the Philippines This week, we welcome Jack Madrid to the Digitally Irresistible podcast. Jack is president and CEO of the IT & Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP). He oversees day-to-day operations for the primary trade body and advocacy group for the IT and Business Process Management (IT-BPM) sector in the Philippines. With almost 400 member organizations, including iQor, and six partner associations, IBPAP plays a pivotal role in sustaining the growth of the IT-BPM industry by working with stakeholders in the government and academia. On this episode, we discuss the role of IBPAP and how the organization supports the BPO industry and drives digital transformation among businesses in the Philippines. A Transformative Journey to the BPO Industry After graduating from university, Jack began his career as a banker in both the Philippines and Hong Kong. That led him to a role overseeing strategic planning and business development for a Philippines-based conglomerate. His career then took an interesting turn when Jack became managing director for MTV Philippines, empowering him to reinvent himself professionally and personally. From there, he was introduced to the BPO industry in the Philippines where he recognized the future of the country and vibrant opportunities for job creation. This prompted his digital journey[BB1] in marketing, setting up operations for Yahoo Philippines. After a few years there, he set out to establish the first e-commerce marketplace in the Philippines. Several years after that, he moved to Vancouver, Canada to be with family and six years later he returned to the Philippines to lead IBPAP—15 years after his introduction to the BPO industry. How IBPAP Supports the BPO Industry in the Philippines IBPAP is the flagship association for the IT-BPM industry in the Philippines, primarily representing the industry, its members, its employers, investors who have offshored their operations in the country, and—most importantly—BPO employees. IBPAP has grown to represent 1.56 million Filipino employees in the country since the beginning of the BPO industry in the Philippines several decades ago. In fact, IBPAP represents the largest industry in the Philippines in terms of jobs and revenue, contributing nearly 8% of the country's GDP. The work and mission of IBPAP is essential for advancing continued opportunities to create jobs throughout the country. Because the Philippines is an archipelago, jobs extend beyond metro Manila and Cebu to 25 cities throughout the countryside that have their own unique characteristics and talent pools with good universities to educate future talent and further expand the BPO industry in the Philippines. The Present State of the BPO Industry in the Philippines Jack notes that the BPO industry in the Philippines is entering an exciting new chapter given the COVID-driven migration of 1+ million employees to work-at-home (WAH) and hybrid environments. When onsite operations quickly moved to work-at-home and hybrid environments while maintaining security, productivity, and customer satisfaction, the BPO industry proved it could deliver outsourced customer service success independent of location and environment for global customers spanning different time zones across verticals and industries. Jack believes the future is bright as the BPO industry in the Philippines develops more value-added services for brands across the globe. Core Strengths and Advantages of the Philippines as an IT-BPM Investment Destination Jack says the primary strength of the Philippines as an IT-BPM investment destination lies in Filipino talent. With a population of 110 million, the Philippines has the demographics and the scale to grow the IT-BPM industry even more. The Filipino workforce is world renowned for excellent communication skills, English fluency, patience, empathy, and the ability to adapt and learn new skills to resolve customer issues across different industry verticals. Talent supply will always be an advantage, but Jack recognizes the need to continue to build on that strength given the continued demand for offshoring to the Philippines. On top of that, he says the Philippines has done a great job building up the digital infrastructure and internet connectivity throughout the archipelago outside of metro Manila and Cebu. As a nation comprised of thousands of islands, each with its own unique population and talent pool, internet connectivity has improved over the years and will continue to improve in the years ahead as IBPAP works with telecom partners. Future Opportunities for the BPO Industry in the Philippines IBPAP recently launched its IT-BPM Roadmap 2028. They publish a new roadmap every six years to outline specific recommendations on how to grow the industry. The most significant part of their Roadmap 2028 is the goal to deliver an additional 1.1 million new jobs for Filipinos by the end of 2028. IBPAP will work with industry stakeholders, government partners, and the private sector to realize this vision over the next six years. The roadmap outlines the following four pillars to grow the IT-BPM industry in the Philippines. 1. Attract and retain investors by reinforcing the ease of doing business in the Philippines. 2. Cultivate an extensive and qualified talent pool. Work with the Department of Education and other partners in government to strengthen university and high school curricula and collaborate with the private sector to ensure the continued availability and employability of talent for the years ahead. Jack emphasizes that this is likely the most critical pillar. 3. Improve and strengthen digital infrastructure in the Philippines to ensure strong connectivity in in-office, at-home, and hybrid work environments throughout the archipelago. 4. Continue to strengthen the Philippines' industry positioning to meet the challenge of adding more than 1 million new jobs in six years, a goal that took over two decades to achieve in the early years of the BPO industry in the Philippines. By focusing on these four pillars, tapping into new talent pools, and continuing to strengthen the Filipinos' acceptance of the BPO industry as a long-term career path, Jack and his colleagues at IBPAP will continue to support the growth of the BPO industry and drive digital transformation among businesses in the Philippines. What Jack Does for Fun For fun, Jack's passion is studying wine. He began his studies a few years ago and now teaches others as an informal wine coach. He enjoys sharing his knowledge about the wine regions as well as the different grapes and varieties of wine. He also spends a fair amount of time analyzing wines through blind tastings. When he's not honing his wine skills, Jack enjoys playing golf and improving his short game. To learn more about Jack and IBPAP, connect with him on LinkedIn, Twitter, and the IBPAP website at www.ibpap.org. Watch the video here. Read the blog post here.

A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin: In June I spoke with Gerrit van der Wees about an article that he wrote about U.S. President Biden's remarks about Taiwan when he was in Tokyo in May. Just last week, Gerrit wrote a very timely article about the controversy over the U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's plans to visit Taiwan. In April Pelosi had planned to visit Taiwan as part of a tour to the Indo Pacific region but had to cancel because she contracted COVID-19. Last week Pelosi left with a delegation for Asia, but made no mention of visiting Taiwan. There had been speculation that the Chinese would attack if U.S. fighter jets escorted Pelosi's plane into Taiwan, and in a phone conversation with U.S. president Joe Biden, Chinese president Xi Jinping warned Biden against “playing with fire” over Taiwan. In his piece for the Taipei Times, Gerrit stated that it is essential that Pelosi stands her ground and pushes through with her plan to visit Taiwan. We'll share Gerrit's Taipei Times article and a few others about this situation on our website for this episode. In my interview with Gerrit I asked him to explain in detail what the Taiwan Relations Act is, and what it tells us about the relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan. We also talked about the so-called U.S. policy of strategic ambiguity, how his work on the Taiwan Communique evolved from 1980 to 2016, and his thoughts on the war in Ukraine, and how it relates to China and Taiwan. About Gerrit van der Wees Gerrit van der Wees is a former Dutch diplomat. From 1980 through 2016, he served as chief-editor of “Taiwan Communiqué.” Also, from 2005 through 2016 he was liaison for the Senate and the State Department at FAPA-HQ. He currently teaches the History of Taiwan at George Mason University and Current issues in East Asia at George Washington University's Elliott School for International Affairs. This episode of Talking Taiwan has been sponsored by NATWA, the North America Taiwanese Women's Association. NATWA was founded in 1988, and its mission is: to evoke a sense of self-esteem and enhance women's dignity, to oppose gender discrimination and promote gender equality, to fully develop women's potential and encourage their participation in public affairs, to contribute to the advancement of human rights and democratic development in Taiwan, to reach out and work with women's organizations worldwide to promote peace for all.
