Just 5 years ago, Oklahoma State University and the Cherokee Nation launched a first-of-its-kind medical school. The College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation is the first and only medical college to be founded on tribal land and linked to a native tribe. The school made history when its first graduating class of doctors received their degrees in May 2024. Drs. Natasha Bray and Douglas Nolan are the Dean and Associate Dean of the school. They join us from Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where they are helping a new generation of doctors learn to provide critical care — especially in rural and tribal areas, which are facing a dire shortage of doctors. During the show you'll also hear from Megan Tramel. She's a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a student at the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tahlequah. This month, in May 2025, she'll receive her degree and start the next phase of her journey as a doctor. We invite you to share your feedback about this show with us on social media. Sometimes it takes decades for a story to come around. Years ago I made a deal to acquire a particular guitar and though many a day has passed since the agreement was made, the instrument has made it into my home. It's a story of youth, hopes, dreams and loss...but mostly about the friends you find through music. SUPPORT INDEPENDENT ARTIST! Episode archive, news and more! Chief Bowles or Duwali was a name familiar across the American Frontier two hundred years ago. As headman of the Cherokees west of the Mississippi River, he saw his people through many a trying time. His favor was curried by the many rulers and would-be rulers of the territories where the Cherokees resided. As a gesture of friendship, he was given a sword by soon-to-be Texas President Sam Houston. That sword is now in Tahlequah, the Capital of the Cherokee Nation, but how it got there is a story you need to hear. The Rent is Too Damn High: More than 63% of Los Angeles residents rent their homes. Unfortunately, this year, many of them are facing significant rent increases. This scenario is playing out for millions of tenants across the city and county of Los Angeles. Letters are being sent to renters, notifying them of upcoming rent hikes. In Los Angeles, rent-controlled properties have a maximum rent increase cap of 4%. Landlords can add an additional 2% if they cover gas and electricity for tenants. For non-rent-controlled properties, rent hikes can soar as high as 8.9%. Ralph's Sues: A Ralphs grocery store in Pacific Palisades is suing seven of the food vendors who have set up on the streets and sidewalks outside their store. The grocery market is suing the street vendors, alleging trespass, public nuisance, and negligence, saying the trucks and their clients illegally park and “obstruct the view of traffic" for Ralphs customers and employees, “obstruct pedestrian walkways,” draw crowds “that physically attack each other,” and “litter in Ralphs lot." LA Law: The Law Makers, Law Breakers and times that there oughta be a law. Animals Gone Wild: Mourning orca with dead baby: Tahlequah or J35, orca carrying dead calf, also made global headlines for doing so in 2018

Missionary Evangelist Robert Breaker speaks about the rapture and the events that happen after that. This sermon was preached in Tahlequah, Oklahoma in March of 2024, in a Cherokee Indian church, during the annual King James Bible Conference.
March 3rd-6th, I preached the second annual King James Bible Seminar at Blessed Hope Baptist Church in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. This is PART ONE! It shows how GOD works through the number 7, just as he promised in Ps. 12:6,7! CORRECTION: I mistakenly said that the words: "Honi soit qui mal y pense" were LATIN, when they are not. The maxim is from the Anglo-Norman language, a dialect of Old Norman French spoken by the medieval ruling class in England. Hope that removes any confusion.
On the morning of Monday, December 13, 2004, twenty-six year old Stephan Adams mysteriously vanished while driving south from Tahlequah to Keys in eastern Oklahoma. The divorced, father of one, spoke to his girlfriend on the phone and informed her that he was giving an unnamed individual a ride to the area. He has never been heard from again nor has his truck ever been found.Stephan's disappearance came at a turning point in his life. For the previous four years he had been embroiled in a bitter custody dispute with his ex-wife and had been accused of crimes against his daughter. After charges were dismissed, Stephan returned to fighting for custody and a new hearing was scheduled to address the arrangement. Stephan disappeared just eight days before this court date. For nearly twenty years rumors have spread about what may or may not have been the missing man's fate. While some believe he had an accident and crashed into a body of water, others theorize he was the victim of foul play. His family and investigators believe he was killed, the victim of a planned hit he was lured into. Was this a random act of violence, or was it somehow connected to that heated custody battle?Sponsored by: ZocDoc! Visit ZocDoc.com/TRACE to download the ZocDoc app FREE! // Babbel! How can a relationship with one animal open the door to the depths of humanity? In this episode, returning guest Kurt Russo shares how he came to see the world through Tokitae, a Southern Resident Orca held captive in the Miami Seaquarium for decades. As he mourns Tokitae's recent death, Kurt reflects on the ways nature gives us signs of the greater mysteries of life. This conversation is equally rooted in the material realities of protecting the Salish Sea, the Snake River, and the more-than-human kin that call those places home, and the spiritual questions that cruelty and disregard for the more-than-human provoke. How has humanity gotten to such a point? Kurt shares guided wisdom about the realities of commodification, ecocide, and the capacity of the human soul for intentional cruelty. How we fight against such darkness matters not just for humanity, but for all with whom we share this precious earth. Kurt Russo is currently the Executive Director of the Indigenous-led nonprofit, Se'Si'Le, that is dedicated to the application of ancestral knowledge to reimagine our relationship to the nature of nature. He worked for the Lummi Nation from 1978-2020 in the area of sacred sites and treaty rights. He also served as Executive Director of the Native American Lands Conservancy in California from 1998-2016 and was Senior Advisor to the Kumeyaay-Digueno Land Conservancy of southern California. He was the co-founder and Executive Director of the Florence R. Kluckhohn Center for the Study of Values from 1987-2002. He has a BS and MS in Forestry and a PhD in History. He has worked abroad with Indigenous communities in their efforts to preserve their ancestral lands and knowledge in Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. For an extended version of this episode, join us at patreon.com/forthewildMusic by Francesca Heart and Julius Smack. A poet reads to a room full of youths who seem to have some residual resentment to the poet. The poet doesn't mind — he understands, and calls on the listeners to share in the power of focused anger, to make it a motivation for their creativity.Mark Turcotte (Turtle Mountain Ojibwe) is the author of The Feathered Heart (Michigan State University Press, 1998) and Exploding Chippewas (Triquarterly Books, 2002).
