Today Tahnee chats with Dr. Jolene Brighten, who is the author of Beyond the Pill. As the name suggests, this book explores the effects of the Pill and how to transition healthily off it. Coming off the Pill can often lead to a whole host of symptoms, but these symptoms can be seen as opportunities for greater health. The ladies share their experiences as new mum's and the challenges that must be navigated. So often, women can lose trust in their body and ability to heal and part of this can be associated with how often women's needs are dismissed in the general practitioner forum. Informed consent around the Pill is required and often missing in the Western setting. The ladies remind us that our bodies never betray us, they want us to thrive!   The ladies discuss: Postpartum challenges How magnesium is a godsend for cramps A Pill bleed is not a true cycle, it is simply a withdrawal bleed from the medication The natural approach will always take time, so be patient During third trimester, the female brain shrinks! To allow for hyper focus on the newborn. Baby brain is real!! I'm absolutely honoured today to bring to you the leading expert in a major (but often ignored) women's health issue to the podcast. Dr. Jolene Brightenis a Functional Medicine Naturopathic Medical Doctor and the founder of Rubus Health, a women’s medicine clinic that specializes in women’s hormones. She is recognized as a leading expert in Post-Birth Control Syndrome and the long-term side effects associated with hormonal contraceptives. Dr. Brighten is the author of Beyond the Pill, a 30 day plan to support women on birth control, help them transition off, and eliminate symptoms of post-birth control syndrome. She is a speaker, women’s health advocate and a medical advisor for one of the first data-driven apps to offer women personalized birth control recommendations. Dr. Brighten is the person I turned to when I was struggling with regaining my period after 11 years on birth control pills, and ever since I've recommended her incredible work to everyone I know.  She is the most passionate person on this topic that you can imagine, and this is the kind of episode that is an absolute must listen.   In fact, be prepared to take notes and listen at least twice. We talk about: What is Post-Birth Control Syndrome What PCOS is and what it means for your body Why your doctor may be ignoring your symptoms and what you can do to care for your own health. The MANY ways the Pill can affect your body and how the symptoms may present (this is going to surprise you) What kinds of testing to ask your doctor to order for you The effects of the Pill on your fertility (this is a big question that needs to be addressed) How to heal your body when coming off of birth control pills Three of the biggest takeaways I want you to get out of this episode: We need to respect the individual approach. Women’s health is very complicated. Medicine is intertwined, not separate. I cannot WAIT to get my hands on a copy of Dr. Brighten's new book Beyond the Pill, and highly recommend you grab a copy for yourself, and pick up some extras for your girlfriends while you're at it!  It's available next week on January 29th, and you can pre-order your copy now.   FIND DR. What We’re Talking About In This Episode Issues the pill can cause that doctors don’t often talk about Jolene’s personal story and why she chose to focus on this aspect of women’s health A look into some of the research that indicates that post-birth control side effects are real Preventative measures women can take to avoid long-term effects of the pill, and healthy ways to go off of it   Episode Summary Are you one of the many women who’ve experienced symptoms after going off of birth control, only for your doctor to tell you it’s all in your head? Today we’re talking to Dr. Jolene Brighten, the leading expert in post birth control syndrome, about what doctors don’t say about the pill, what women can do to manage the side effects, and coming off the pill safely. Dr. Jolene is a functional medicine naturopathic doctor and is the founder of Rubus Health. She focuses on helping women who want to go off the pill and balance their hormones as well as those who want to stay on the pill while preventing long-term consequences. Today we talk about the symptoms countless women experience when they go off the pill, as well as the long-term effects of being on the pill that most women aren’t aware of. She shares a patient’s success story of going off the pill and all the positive changes that took place. We also talk about some of the things women who want to stay on the pill can do to minimize long-term effects. Are you thinking about going off the pill? Did you go off and experience some of these symptoms? Tell us your story in the comments on the episode page!   Quotes: “Only a woman living in her body knows what’s normal and not normal for her.” 08:10 “It’s not that your body is betraying or revolting against you. Your body has been trying to communicate that something is not right for a while now, and it’s essentially had duct tape over its mouth, and when you stopped the pill, you took that duct tape off” 17:28 “If you don’t know what your purpose is or you feel like you’re not living in it, re-examine your health. It’s Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. If your physical body isn’t being cared for and provided for, it’s so much harder to show up in this world and do the work you need to do” 30:32   Resources Mentioned: Dr. Jolene Brighten’s Website Her free gift for us: Quick Start Detox Guide to help balance hormones Follow Dr. Brighten on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn   Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube   Please review us on iTunes.  And, if you haven’t already, SUBSCRIBE!
