obituary courtesy of the International Society of Bassists: Wolfgang Güttler, whose decades-long career as a performer, recording artist and educator garnered numerous awards, including the Concours de Genève, died on September 18, 2022. He was 77 years old.  Born in Brasov, Romania, he was solo bassist with the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg, and tutti double bass with the Berlin Philharmonic and Bucharest Radio Orchestra. He served as professor of double bass at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, and gave masterclasses at the Julliard School.    He was dedicated to expanding the double bass repertoire, from classical standards to jazz, and was a champion of contemporary music. His remarkable musical partnership with the Rumanian double bass virtuoso Ovidiu Badila was cut short by Badila's untimely passing.    Says Martin Wind of his late teacher Wolfgang Güttler, “He encouraged me to listen to my own voice, follow my instincts and become an independently thinking, complete musician. In my 25+ years of teaching there has not been one day where I did not pass on the lessons that I learned from him.” Petru Iuga also paid tribute upon learning of Güttler's death: “He was one of the greatest bassists and musicians I ever met. A great man, friend and a spiritual double-bass father who has inspired me.”   Subscribe to the podcast to get these interviews delivered to you automatically!   Check out our Online Sheet Music Store with 100+ wide-ranging titles for bassists.   Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle. An odd ailment leads to a world-changing new trend. Daniel M. Cojocaru was born and grew up in Switzerland (of Rumanian and Czech background). He studied English Lit in Zurich and later did his PhD at Oxford University (St. Peter's College). But, since everybody's a critic, he decided to start writing fiction himself, whenever his kids let him. He teaches English in Wetzikon, Switzerland. Recently he took a small step for mankind but a big one for himself and joined twitter: https://twitter.com/DanielMCojoca ---- Story Submission ---- Got a short story you'd like to submit? Submission guidelines can be found at TallTaleTV.com ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- My name is Chris Herron, and I narrate audiobooks. In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal. I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. A way to showcase their skills with the written word. Synopsis At Queen’s Hall in London, on today’s date in 1920, conductor Albert Coates led the premiere of the revised version of the “London” Symphony of Ralph Vaughan Williams. A longer version of this Symphony had premiered six years earlier, and Vaughan Williams would continue to tinker with this work, on and off, for decades. “The London Symphony is past mending,” wrote Vaughan Williams in 1951, “though with all its faults I love it still; indeed, it is my favorite.” For most music lovers, Vaughan Williams means English folk tunes or hymns woven into lush works for strings, or musical pictures of English countryside… But it was a city view that inspired his “London Symphony,” described by Vaughan Williams himself as “a good view of the river and a bridge and three great electric-light chimneys and a sunset.” In fact, you could call the Vaughan Williams Second a “sunset” symphony. Its final pages were inspired by an H. G. Wells novel describing a night passage on the Thames to the open sea: “To run down the Thames so is to run one’s hand over the pages in the book of England from end to end... The river passes... London passes… England passes…“ Music Played in Today's Program Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872 – 1958) A London Symphony (Symphony No. 2) London Symphony; Richard Hickox, cond. His clear insights provide important details about the mastery of the pianists of the past and present through his magazine articles, blog and social media pages, CD productions and liner notes, and lecture-demonstrations. Mark’s work in the field of historical recordings began in his late teens, when his pre-university writing and research on this topic won the admiration of Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times music critic Harold Schonberg. His first CD liner notes, for VAI’s release ‘Liszt: The 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies Played by 19 Great Pianists’, were co-authored in his early 20s with International Piano Archives founding president Gregor Benko, coinciding with Mark’s pioneering work in discovering previously unpublished recordings of the legendary pianist Dinu Lipatti. His internationally acclaimed efforts led to the world premiere award-winning release of over two hours of ‘unknown’ performances by Lipatti, among them piano concertos by Liszt and Bartok. Mark’s articles about Lipatti for International Piano Quarterly, International Piano, and Classical Record Collector magazines, as well as liner notes for the labels APR, archiphon, and Opus Kura, have debunked myths surrounding the life and art of this legendary musician, and he has received support for his work from some of the Rumanian biographers, diplomats, and producers who have worked for decades in publicizing this musician’s legacy. Mark has also written in both International Piano and Classic Record Collector magazines about the great French pianist Marcelle Meyer, the muse of Le Groupe des Six in 1920s Paris who additionally worked with Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky. Mark has given lectures at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, the Leschetitzky Society in Tokyo, and the San Francisco Conservatory, speaking about Great Historical Recordings in general and about Dinu Lipatti specifically, and was featured on WNYC radio in New York City in 1992 for the premiere broadcast of some rare Lipatti recordings. In September 2010, Mark co-chaired the panel discussion after the screening of a documentary about Dinu Lipatti at the Besancon International Music Festival, and the following month he opened the 2010 Great Romantics Festival with a presentation entitled “Schumann—The Poet of the Piano” for the bicentennial of Schumann’s birth. In 2016 the Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest sponsored a trip for Mark to visit Romania and lecture about Dinu Lipatti in conjunction with a new Lipatti website; Mark additionally appeared on Romanian TV and radio on this trip. He also presented at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Vienna in 2017 to mark the beginning of Lipatti’s centenary that year. Mark’s international research has led to meetings with many musical luminaries, among them Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Yehudi Menuhin, Hugues Cuenod, Franziska Ackermann (widow of conductor Otto Ackermann), Stephen Hough (who has referred to Mark’s blog in his own for The Telegraph), Idil Biret, the family of Marcelle Meyer, Lake Como Piano Academy director William Nabore, and renowned artist manager Jacques Leiser. Mark has most recently written in International Piano about the evolution of Alfred Cortot’s playing as heard through his recordings, in addition to a centenary tribute to Dinu Lipatti. Previous articles in International Piano include features about the challenges facing young pianists as related by Jacques Leiser, an interview with British-Canadian pianist Valerie Tryon, and biographical articles about Dinu Lipatti and Marcelle Meyer. Mark has also published an extensive 9-page article about Dinu Lipatti for Classical Recordings Quarterly, and for Clavier Companion magazine has produced an article about recording producer Walter Legge, a feature on the ‘rediscovered Romantic’ pianist Jascha Spivakovsky, and interviews with Stephen Hough and Livia Rev. Mark continues his research into the life and recordings of Dinu Lipatti and has prepared a commemorative website devoted to the artist at dinulipatti.com . Mark has been a regular guest lecturer in both Sara Davis Buechner’s and Corey Hamm’s piano literature classes at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, and he guest lectured at Manhattan School of Music in April 2017. He is available for writing projects such as CD liner notes, articles, and interviews, as well as lecture-demonstrations on a variety of piano-related topics. Andreas Braun and Tony Cline do a good job at explaining and summarizing the limited research conducted with trilingual/multilingual families and their linguistic practices. We were drawn to this book because it portrays parents and sometimes children's testimonials on their linguistic practices and attitudes towards trilingualism. A note to the listener: this book is contextualized in Europe, the authors only interviewed families living in Germany and the UK, but these families spoke a wide variety of languages (Polish, Rumanian, Vietnamese, etc).

By 1881, on the eve of the start of the Zionist Jewish influx, Palestine’s population was 457,000—about 400,000 of them Muslims, 13,000–20,000 Jews, and 42,000 Christians (mostly Greek Orthodox). In addition, there were several thousand more Jews who were permanent residents of Palestine but not Ottoman citizens. The overwhelming majority of the population was Arab, about 70 percent rural. Most of the Jews and Christians lived in Jerusalem. But then foreign Jews started buying land in Palestine. When the first Jews started to arrive from Russia, the governor of Jerusalem was ordered to bar Russian, Rumanian, and Bulgarian Jews from landing in Jaffa and Haifa. The following year he was instructed to stop the sale of state lands to Jews, even if they were Ottoman citizens. But they kept coming anyway. Many of the Zionists had been lead to believe the land was mostly empty. Many people believe that still today. Of the Palestinians, many Zionists believed they were "primitive, dishonest, fatalistic, lazy, savage". The Zionist leader Moshe Smilansky, in 1914 wrote: "We must not forget that we are dealing here with a semi-savage people...." The cause of the Zionists was supported by certain Western leaders, especially those who were Christian Zionists. Christian Zionists believe that the gathering of the Jews in Israel is a prerequisite for the Second Coming of Jesus.

What does it take to scale European Amazon sellers? How does language play a part in expanding businesses in Europe? Find out in today's podcast. Augustas will have different events in 4 countries Augustas wants to bring sellers together which is much harder to do in Europe.  Every country has its own culture and gets isolated, especially European Amazon sellers. Rumanian sellers communicate with Rumanians; Lithuanians with others etc.  Most Europeans are excited to meet other nationalities.  You find different perspectives on how people see the same thing.  Different perspectives on the same thing from different nationalities For example, in China - big learning -visiting China for 3 weeks 20 years ago. In Europe we say “round table” - if a Chinese person looks at it - it’s an “Ellipse”. From the side, it is an eclipse.  What are your experiences between British sellers and other countries? Multiple languages Brits often have a disadvantage as they are mono-lingual. Even Germans tend to speak German and English.  It opens up information that is shared among those people for European Amazon sellers.  Even if you don’t speak German and sell in Germany - you’re going to need to hire a translator.  Recently Augustas was organising an event in Israel - and he didn’t realise how hard it would be to organise! He was relying on the business partner for marketing. He couldn’t read any of the Hebrew.  There weren’t systems in place to translate quickly and easily for European Amazon sellers.  Central & Eastern European experience as Amazon sellers Especially Central and Eastern Europe, he holds lots of events in Russia - Georgia in a few weeks. Ukraine is more known in the Russian community.  They tend to go for less expensive services, they are more geared to keep cheap in Western Europe. Photographer in Lithuania Lithuanian Amazon sellers run away when he tells them the price.  They think it should be €200-300, not €700  Trends - seller behaviour Eg selling in The USA? European marketplaces?  Augustas’s Story as an entrepreneur - background He was a programmer who went into the Amazon industry Not native English speaker - got known with virtual summits Now does live events.  Events (English language)  Augustas jumped into the arena about 3 years ago and has done 6 virtual summits. In 2019, he started doing live events.  He’s done several events so far:  He has done one event in Prague - for European ones “European Seller Conference.”  One in Israel - Sellerfest -for local sellers. He has also done one event in Lithuania - Sellerfest  Uses the same event name for multiple countries.  Topics Lithuania is serving different market segments: Some intermediate sellers;  However, the PPC Congress in Oct 3,4 in Amsterdam will be only talking about Amazon advertising.  This will be the first of its kind. There are conferences around Google ads etc. but not yet Amazon advertising. Hopefully he will attract some agencies who help a lot of Amazon sellers.  Augustas is looking to serve 3 types of companies: Amazon sellers, agencies, software.  He’s bringing interesting speakers who will talk about PPC strategies; but he’ll also have a slot for sharing experience in running an agency Liran Hirschkorn, Danny McMillan.   Speakers Brian Johnson, Liz Martin Adamson (known in the advertising industry) Then less-known names but Augustas always asked friends about their opinion.  He’s also serving different regions - 10 speakers in Israel. In Lithuania, he’s bringing in 14 speakers from 9 different countries.  Organising events What are the pros and cons of doing this? Augustas is trying to help people first of all. It’s not driven by Monday.  March 2019 Prague - mentally he prepared 2 years in advance.  There were 8-9 months of planning for this.  Augustas’s first thought - creating an event or a conference.

In part 2 of our conversation with Iasmina and Alexandra we talked a bit more about our journey in France and about clichés. We also thought about where is home and what do we do when we miss it. To top it all, Iasmina sang us a famous Rumanian song and Alexandra told us about the time someone asked her "if you're Venezuelan, why are you white?"

Well, I decided that for all my podcasts, I'll write a little introduction and then put the transcript for the voice recording for you. So, welcome to "Alan's Weekend Words January 19th". Today some advice on pronuciation for all you English learners! Hello, for my weekend words this week I want to talk about pronunciation difficulties for learners of English. It seems to me that there are some sounds that present more difficulties that others. For example the English "th" sound. think thought thank thesis therapy nothing tether teeth are some words starting with or containing the sound 'th". For this sound place the top of your tongue against your top teeth - push some air through without too much pressure and say the word. think, thought, thank, thesis, therapy, nothing, tether, teeth The other 'th" sound is the same tongue position - but with less air movement and more voice. See if you can hear the difference between the two different 'th" sounds the, there, those, with, feather Try practicing these "th" sounds slowly then speed up Make sure that you keep relaxed when you speak and don't worry if you find it difficult - just keep practicing when you have a little time. The other sound I wanted to talk about today is the English "r" The British version is softer sounding than the American: run ready really roaring the american sounds more "strong" - in other words add more sound to your voice as you speak - with a little more energy. run ready really roaring I can't really speak with an american accent very well - but I just wanted to show you an example. Your tongue needs to be curled back about half-way in your mouth - but not touching any part of your mouth and then curl it back forward again and keep it quite loose as you do. "a Rumanian runner was running a revolution around a really rocky racetrack" Tongue twisters like this can be very useful for pronunciation practice Take care and see you next time http://www.englishsecret.com/pages/sound.jsp?pid=12
