On today's episode I have Sally Obermeder. Sally is the Co-founder of SWIISH, a wellness brand that launched in 2012, a best selling author with her book Green Smoothies still sitting at the top of its category, a TV presenter, an ex pilates teacher, and a mother of 2. Sally has one heck of a story. The day before her first daughter was born, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, and it was a rare form of cancer. I was lucky enough to hear Sally speak at a Body By Berner event a few months ago, her journey and strength inspired me and every woman sitting in that room. I really honoured to have her joining me on the mic today and I can't wait for your all to learn from her strength. She truely shows the power of the human spirit.

While Something To Talk About takes a break, we are revisiting some of the most candid and revealing moments from the almost 50 guests who have joined us in conversation on this podcast over the past year.  Even at a time when more taboos are being broken than ever before, the topic of money is still not considered to be polite dinner-table conversation. But while gloating about wealth or prying into the salary of a relative or friend is one thing, a wider discussion around financial security and literacy is something more of us are growing comfortable with – particularly women. When Jackie O sat down in conversation with Something To Talk About in May, she was asked about her decision to show up in person at an auction to buy her luxurious new home. “I hate showing off wealth,” she explained, “but at the same time, I shouldn't be embarrassed by it.” It was an exchange that ignited countless headlines and prompted many follow-up conversations about how Jackie O has become an example of a woman feeling comfortable about her earning power.  Michelle Bridge later told Something To Talk About how Jackie had inspired her to also be more upfront and proud of the empire she has built. And as somebody who works with women's community shelters, Michelle is also mindful of the importance of women taking control of their finances, particularly given women over 55 are the fastest-growing demographic of homeless people in Australia. Sally Obermeder, meanwhile, was also very open about the highs and lows of her path to launching a successful business, including the hard-won lessons she and her co-founder sister learnt along the way. Despite starting her career as a finance reporter, Sally was also very honest about the steep learning curve she embarked on to attain financial literacy. And given we are in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, self-described finance nerd David Koch shared the advice he would give to those who want to build a secure future in challenging times.  And then there was Sarah Wilson, who also generated headlines across the country when she explained how and why she has stopped buying things, and issued a friendly challenge to her fellow Australians to discover the stress-free joys in curbing our consumption. Sally Obermeder knows a lot about wellness, not only as the CEO and co-founder of superfood, skincare and supplement empire Swiish, but also as a cancer survivor who in 2011 was faced with the reality that she might not make it to the 50th birthday she celebrated earlier this year.  Today, Sally - who is also a mum of two, media personality and a cast member on The Real Housewives of Sydney - sits down to explain that while she is proud of her successes, and remains in good health, there has been a lot of struggle behind her shine. She gets candid about the financial realities of running a small business, and shares a very funny story about the time she and her sister and business partner learnt they were facing bankruptcy… just as they were living the high-life in a poolside cabana at a fancy hotel.  Sally also tells us about how the sacrifices her parents made set her up for the future, fires up about the way society cuts down women who are ambitious and explains why - despite her gratitude for all that she's achieved - she can't bear to be told that she's “killing it”. From there, the journey to SWIISH started, but there's a lot more to it which I'll let Sally and Maha tell you about. With a focus on innovation and being first to market, SWIISH leads the way in the wellness supplements space. It's hard to put words to the gravity of this episode - but we'll try. Sally Obermeder is an incredible woman, who is the definition of resilience. After finally having success via IVF when trying to conceive, Sally was at one of her final OB appointments before heading into the realm of birth, newborns and beyond; as an afterthought, she casually mentioned a lump in her breast that had formed during pregnancy - as she was literally walking out the door of her doctor's office. This sparked the beginning of a grueling cancer journey, with Sally undergoing 16 rounds of chemotherapy, two mastectomies and radiation - all during the tender postpartum period. Her tale of survival is a beautiful one - but it doesn't end there. Sally and her husband Marcus decided they wanted to grow their family after she received a clean bill of health - but with only a few embryos left and a body that might not be able to sustain a pregnancy after such intensive cancer treatment - they turned to surrogacy. This story is not one without hardships - but it is truly the most uplifting and inspiring interview. Tori cried at least three times - so we warn you now, Peachies, grab the tissues and be ready to immerse yourself in the journey of our much adored Sal. In episode eighty three of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts talks to the co-founder and Creative Director of SWIISH, Sally Obermeder.Sally Obermeder always wanted a job that allowed her to have a chat, which is why she abandoned her early ambitions of a career in dentistry in favour of a role in finance. After a decade in investment banking Sally realised that her heart wasn't in it, and decided to take a leap of faith in the direction of an industry she'd long dreamt of working in- television. Sally spent close to four years training, learning, applying and auditioning for work as a television presenter, and despite being told by a teacher that she would “100% never get a job in television,” she eventually landed her dream job- a presenting role that saw her interview upwards of 200 international celebrities and become one of Australia's most recognisable television personalities. Everything changed in 2011. At 40 weeks pregnant, Sally was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She gave birth the next day, and commenced chemotherapy when her first daughter was one week old. Sally's experience can't be minimised to a three minute podcast intro so I'll allow you to listen for yourself, however I would like this opportunity to thank Sally, again, for sharing her story. Sally, of course, recovered, and took the time to decide what she wanted to do next. She returned to television, however she wanted to do something more, something that would allow her and her sister, Maha to work together. The pair launched SWIISH as a blog in October 2012 and later began working on a book together. Not one publisher elected to back said book, so the pair self-published. That book, Super Green Smoothies, went to number one overnight, is still number one in its category, and has since been republished 20 times. The success of the book saw Sally and Maha transform SWIISH into an e-commerce destination, with the pair eventually developing their own brand of wellness supplements. Today, the SWIISH brand consists of 12 supplements, a topical beauty range and a clothing line, all of which are shipped to over 70 countries worldwide. In this conversation, Sally shares the freedom that comes with not needing approval from others in pursuit of your dreams, her experience with cancer and the reality of accepting that you may not survive, and how Taylor Swift has earned her some serious popularity points on the home front.Read more at glowjournal.comFollow Sally Obermeder on Instagram @sallyobermeder, @swiishbysallyo and @swiishwellnessStay up to date with Gemma on Instagram at @gemkwatts and @glow.journal, or get in touch at hello@gemkwatts.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, we had the opportunity to hear from Maha Corbett Co-Founder of SWIISH. Today in the Nova studio we are not only joined by Maha but her beautiful 4 week only baby Joshua who joins the conversation as well! Known for her entrepreneurial spirit, Maha began her career in Investment Banking Human Resources where she held senior executive roles. However, her desire to start her own business, coupled with her passion for all things wellness and fashion, saw Maha leave this career behind to launch SWIISH.com in October 2012 alongside her sister, Sally Obermeder. SWIISH stands for Stylish Women Inspiring Inner Strength Health & Happiness, and is a vibrant, feel-good online destination. It inspires women to feel amazing inside and out. The goal of starting this business was always to build it up so that they could enjoy the flexibility that comes with owning your own business, and start a family. ‘With all my experience through SWIISH, I fully understand the value of self-care and make it a priority, even now with a newborn' says Maha. Working right up until the birth of her little boy, Maha takes us through the unexpected arrival of Joshua and how she managed the transition of the business being her number #1 priority, to her new family. Being a new mum in business, learning how to trust others to do your job while you are away is essential. ‘It has taken us years to get the right team in place so that we do not need to be across every A-Z' says Maha. As Joshua joins us for a feed, Tory reminisces about early motherhood and business with some funny insights about her daughter pooping during a client pitch meeting to break the ice. One of the hardest tasks is finding the off switch. Maha's top tips - ‘At some point, you have to say that is enough for today – because if you don't look after yourself you can burn out. Also, there's power in your team of people. If you have the right team you can let go and press that off switch.' Maintaining boundaries is essential. With their husbands also working in the business, Maha gives her top tips for creating boundaries. She says you have to consciously create time to talk about life outside of work. Be intentional. Maintaining balance in your relationships, including the one with yourself, will keep your relationships healthy. ‘Bringing Joshua into the world has been a long time coming and I don't want to miss anything. I am happy to keep an eye on the business but I want to be there for all the small moments' says Maha. So, if she was to send a message to her future self when Joshua turns 21 years old…what would it be? Maha says, ‘You did good, you took life's ups and downs and you gave back and at the end of the day I just want him to be proud of me.' And finally, Tory asks Maha her three most powerful steps you ever took in business. ‘Just starting is the first step. Then you really need to know the numbers, but accountable to them and understand what they mean. And finally, you have to be able to make tough decisions around people.' Monetising Your Lifestyle Blog Have you thought about starting a blog that brings in a monthly revenue or are you hoping to monetise your existing blog? If you've answered “yes” to either of these questions then keep reading! On today's episode of the Mums With Hustle podcast, we're going to deep dive into discussing how to start monetising your blog through various income streams with insight from some really amazing guests who are building an empire from their lifestyle blog. LET'S GET INTO IT Today, I'm joined by the high vibing sister duo behind the all-encompassing, true lifestyle blog, SWIISH.com. Yep, it's the Swiish sisters Sally Obermeder and Maha Koraiem! No doubt you've come across their joyful smiles, fashion finds and tasty eats, if you aren't following them already on Instagram, you will be by the end of this podcast episode! SWIISH.com began with the vision to share Sally’s expertise for discovering chic, affordable and fabulous finds for a stylish lifestyle. In addition to SWIISH.com, you can catch Sally co-hosting Channel 7’s national news and entertainment show, The Daily Edition and both Maha and Sally are dedicated philanthropists, working alongside various charitable organisations as ambassadors and supporters. THE RECAP You are in for a serious treat with this episode. During this episode, we're talking about all things blogging! We're going as deep as covering why you must establish your why, the importance of knowing your ideal avatar, and how to start monetising your blog through various income streams! 1. Introducing Sally & Maha! The two things I love the most about these two kickass women are that they are no BS and pure hustle and heart. So let's hear their story and learn a little more about Sally & Maha's journey! Key Points We Discussed: Who are Sally & Maha? What is their biz journey? How did Sally and Maha found their biz? 2. Establishing Your Why I cannot stress enough that establishing and knowing your WHY is one of the most important aspects of starting and growing your business or blog. Key Points We Discussed: What does SWIISH stand for? Stylish Women Inspiring Inner Health and Happiness How do you recommend women in business establish their why? Figure out what resonates with you the most. Most business owners think of an idea they’re passionate about and then realise there’s nothing out there similar in the market and that becomes their why. Why is it important to be passionate about what you're doing? If you’re passionate about something, the why is always easy. 3. Nailing Your Ideal Avatar A big challenge at the beginning of setting up or conceptualising a business is often defining your target audience and really nailing that description of your avatar. I asked Sally and Maha to discuss their ideal SWIISH chick! Key Points We Discussed: Who is your SWIISH chick? How does having a clear understanding and vision of your ideal avatar shape what you do in biz? In what ways will you be able to better serve your tribe if you know your ideal avatar? 4. Introducing New Revenue Streams Sally and Maha run a lifestyle blog with several revenue streams. In this section, they're sharing some of the ways they've managed to introduce new revenue to their site. Key Points We Discussed: How did knowing your ideal avatar allow you to expand into new revenue streams? Why you should learn how to diversify? In what ways do Sally and Maha recommend women monetise their blog? What 3 actionable tips can you implement to start a blog with revenue? Don’t put all of your eggs into one basket. It’s important to have several income streams so if it’s a slow month in one area, you have another area to fall back on. If you’re not at that stage of your blog or business yet, keep your day job and do your passion project as a side hustle until you’ve got the income to do it full-time. Be your own cheerleader. This is Sal’s favourite piece of advice.

And imagine just hours later, you're told you have aggressive breast cancer, and treatment must start immediately if you are to survive. It's a harrowing thought, but for journalist, author and mama of two Sally Obermeder, this was her reality.
