Adani Green Energy Ltd told Sri Lanka's Board of Investment yesterday that it would “respectfully withdraw” from the wind project following discussions with officials who indicated that fresh committees would be formed to “renegotiate the project proposal”. The wind project has been under intense scrutiny since the election of Sri Lanka's President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in September last year, after he promised to cancel the “corrupt” project in the runup to the elections.Meanwhile, facing growing revenue and fiscal deficits and a mounting debt, the Mamata Banerjee government diverted some of its spending on social welfare from its flagship Lakshmir Bhandar scheme to one for building rural houses, in the Budget tabled yesterday. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 9th of December and here are the headlines.India called for a “peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process” which respects the interests and aspirations of all sections of Syrian society, in its first statement today since the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday. Bashar al-Assad fled Syria for Russia after Islamist rebels managed to advance and capture Damascus on Sunday. The Syrian conflict since 2011 had been frozen for the last few years and the Assad regime had managed to stave off any possible insurrection but that changed in the last few days, as the rebels advanced against the Syrian regime's army. The Lok Sabha faced disruptions amid slogans raised by Opposition MPs, leading to an adjournment. In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the House JP Nadda made a brief statement seeking a discussion on the Soros issue. Meanwhile, Congress has called for a comprehensive debate on the India-China ties, encompassing strategic and economic policies. This comes as a response to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's recent briefing in Lok Sabha on key developments in bilateral relations following the agreement on patrolling along the Line of Actual Control in easter Ladakh. After the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker's election was formally announced in the House today, the Assembly passed the confidence vote in favour of  Devendra Fadnavis led government by majority voice vote. There are widespread changes in the AAP candidate list, with the ruling party dropping 13 of its sitting MLAs. Two sitting MLAs, Manish Sisodia and Rakhi Bidlan, have been fielded from new constituencies of Jundpura and Manipur, respectively. Avadh Ojha, a popular UPSC coaching teacher and motivational speaker who joined the AAP recently, replaced Manish Sisodia in Patparganj. Meanwhile, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju said today that the alleged links between the Congress and Hungarian-American businessman should be considered “serious” and urged the opposition party  to fight unitedly against “anti-India forces”. 'Former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu claimed that his wife beat Stage IV breast cancer thanks to a special diet of neem leaves and alkaline water. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways, recently shared a video of a travelling ticket examiner performing CPR on a fully conscious elderly passenger. These incidents would be amusing if they weren't so dangerous. A peculiar brand of medical misinformation that comes with an official stamp of approval is at play here. It speaks volumes about the state of scientific literacy among our leaders. This is the result of a carefully cultivated ecosystem where scientific temper has been systematically dismantled. The transformation of fringe theories into institutional policy was so gradual that many missed it. It started with our scientific institutions being demolished. Having replaced scientific temper with superstition, we're now watching the cost being calculated not in crores, but in preventable tragedies,' says Karanjeet Kaur, journalist and former editor of Arré, in this week's column.

This ambitious plan stretches from the Vadodara border in Gujarat to Alibaug in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, encompassing Navi Mumbai and Thane. The intricate network includes roads, flyovers, reclaimed coastal routes, bridges, and underwater tunnels, all designed to alleviate the city's notorious traffic bottlenecks by 2029. Once completed, this infrastructure project is expected to significantly transform the island city and its surrounding areas. It will not only reduce congestion but also enhance public transport accessibility, making travel more convenient for residents and commuters alike.Union Minister of Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya said today that the Centre is looking into the recent incident involving the death of an employee of Ernst & Young (EY) India and has sought information from state authorities. The report is expected to be submitted in the next 7-10 days, following which the government will take any action, he said. He further added, “We will have to study the results of the report. We have already sought information from the state officers. We'll be able to tell more about it when the report comes."The Supreme Court today set aside the Madras High Court order which said that merely storing child pornographic material without any intention to transmit it would not constitute an offence under the POCSO Act. A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said the High Court “committed an egregious error in passing the impugned judgment.” The judgement also called upon Parliament to “seriously consider to bring about an amendment to the POCSO for the purpose of substituting the term “child pornography” with “child sexual exploitative and abuse material” (CSEAM) to “reflect more accurately on the reality of such offences”.Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi took charge as Delhi's eighth Chief Minister, becoming the youngest leader to do so. While assuming her post, she said that she will work as a caretaker CM, like “Bharat did for Ram in Ramayana”. Pointing towards an empty chair placed beside her, she added: “this is the Chief Minister's seat and it will remain empty till Kejriwal becomes CM again.” The BJP decried the move, asking Kejriwal if he will “run the government with a remote control”.The Film Federation of India, the apex body responsible for selecting India's official entry for the Best Foreign Film Category at the 97th Academy Awards, announced Laapataa Ladies as India's official entry to the Academy Awards at an event in Chennai on Monday. Protestors now claim that “external pressure” is causing decorators, who had installed fans for them, to now take them down. “It could be an effort to demoralise us,” said a junior doctor, “but we would like to clearly say that for a protest, we don't need all this. We can protest from anywhere and in any possible way.” Junior doctors announced their decision to continue their protest and cease work after a six-hour meeting with government officials Wednesday night.Days after the family of a 26-year-old employee alleged that “work pressure” at her firm led to her death, Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje Thursday said that the Labour Ministry has taken up the complaint and is investigating the claims. He said, quote, "We have the goal of making it a developed country by the time it celebrates 100 years of independence. Therefore, these 25 years is India's Amrit Kaal." Unquote. A Karnataka government doctor who conducted the post-mortem, said the body did not show signs of rigor mortis – stiffening of the limbs of the corpse caused by chemical changes in the muscles. This indicated that the alleged murder took place at least 36 hours earlier. While Republic Day preparations are on full swing at the Kartavya Path in New Delhi, several Opposition-ruled states and the Central government have been engaged in a war of words over their tableaus being rejected. While Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has called the Centre's move as an insult towards Kannadigas, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann said that the Central government was suffering from an anti-Punjab syndrome". The Centre, however, has stuck to its decision, issuing clarifications regarding the disqualifications.A senior police official in Dahod has said they have not yet received any information about the surrender of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case after the Supreme Court quashed the Gujarat government's decision to grant them remission. A police force remains deployed in the area where the convicts are living in order to maintain peace. He also said the convicts are "not incommunicado" and some of them are visiting relatives.Flagging concerns regarding the "influence" that social media platforms can have on democratic processes, Union Minister of Communications, IT and Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said that while India currently has a regulatory framework that can deal with the issue to an extent, a "much more comprehensive legal structure" was needed.Speaking at The Indian Express Idea Exchange event, he also emphasised that there is a need for these platforms to be subjected to increased accountability. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.
