The "Hip Hinge" (or the athletic ready position) has been called the most important sports movement. There are many ways to teach the hip hinge. I prefer teaching it using a light two-pound "SandBell" disc. Working harder than everyone else. Starving yourself by limiting caloric intake. Exercising to the point of exhaustion. Working out every day no matter how you feel. Which of these methods can help you get the results you want from your exercise program? Yes, hard work is essential but when it comes to changing your body through exercise it may not be the most important thing that can help you get the results you want. Is there a 'best method' for reaching your health and fitness goals? Can there really be a secret to long-term success and, if so, what is it ? On this episode of All About Fitness Don Saladino, a NYC-based coach and owner of the Drive 495 fitness studio with over twenty years of helping people reach their goals, returns to share his insights on what you can do to reach yours. Don works with an extremely A-list clientele, helping many of them to prepare for roles in movies and on TV, but his suggestions can be used by anyone who wants to improve their health and fitness. You'll be surprised to find out that while hard work is important, there is one fundamental trait shared by all of those who have been able to reach and maintain their goals (and you'll have to listen to learn what it is). Exercise comes easy to some people while others would rather do anything else than sweat. Many of us who now work full-time in the fitness industry started because we struggled to exercise ourselves and once we were able to reap the benefits from making it a habit we wanted to help others learn how to make exercise a part of their lives as well. Kenny Santucci, the Director of Body by Solace in New York City, is an example of someone who struggled with his weight yet has now dedicated his career to helping others get in the best shape of their lives. Kenny is well known for multiple TV appearances and being an amazing on-air TV host, but what makes him a great fitness coach is his commitment to helping his clients become the best version of themselves. On this episode of All About Fitness, Kenny joins me to talk about his journey struggling with his weight, how he got started in fitness, the benefits of high intensity exercise and why his post-workout brunches are such an important part of his fitness experience. If you've ever struggled with making exercise a habit, this conversation will provide you with some important insights on how you can take the steps to make fitness a regular part of your life. The human body is like a cell phone; a phone is made up of hardware, specifically bits of plastic, metal and glass - what makes the phone function is the operating system. In the human body our muscles and skeletal structures are the hardware, our central nervous system (CNS) is akin to our operating system which allows us to function. The data received by the CNS is critical for helping you to move and perform your best. The shoes you wear can affect how your body receives data from the environment, specifically the ground. Our feet are designed to absorb force when we step on the ground and to generate force by pushing off against it. Wearing the wrong type of shoes can change how your feet, and your entire body, function. Galahad Clark is a 7th generation member of the Clark family that makes Clark shoes; however, he realized that many shoes are poorly designed and do not support the natural function of the feet they're supposed to protect. As a result, Galahad started the VIVOBAREFOOT shoe company to create minimalist shoes that allow for optimal foot biomechanics. Recently Mr. Clark & VIVOBAREFOOT produced the movie, Shoespiracy to tell and show how the large shoe companies design shoes for profits not to promote optimal human performance (as many claim). On this episode of All About Fitness, Galahad discusses what motivated him to disrupt the shoe industry; we discuss the benefits of wearing minimalist shoes and address the proper way to incorporate them into your exercise program. If you've ever wondered whether or not your shoes affect how you move then this episode is for YOU! Every time you take a step your feet interact with the ground which sends forces upwards into the body; at the same time the weight of your body presses down on top of the foot. The foot is structurally designed to handle these forces, however if your feet do NOT function properly it could affect many other parts of your body. On this episode of All About Fitness, Dr. Emily Splichal, a podiatrist with a movement background in gymnastics and experience as a fitness instructor, talks about the role your feet play in how your body is designed to move. We discuss the role that minimalist shoes could play in your fitness program, in addition, Dr. Splichal provides important insights on what you can be doing to improve the health and function of your feet. Legs. Chest. Back. Arms. Core. Fascia. Emotions. What? Yes, most exercise programs will focus on specific muscles or parts of the body, but when was the last time you walked into a gym to strengthen your fascia or train your emotions? The truth is that our bodies are complex organisms containing numerous systems (digestive, nervous, muscular) each one affected by exercise. Your fascia is the elastic tissue that surrounds every single muscle fiber; muscles generate force and fascia transmits that force through the body. If you are not doing the proper exercise or self-care techniques for your fascia, it WILL affect how you move and could be a potential cause of injury. When it comes to our emotions, there is a direct connection between how we feel and how we move; motion influence emotion and emotion influences motion. On this episode of All About Fitness, Rodney Corn, a co-founder of Feel Soma one of the smartest, most innovative fitness educators in the world who helped create the education programs for PTA Global and NASM shares his insights on fascia and emotions and how each can have a significant impact on how you move and feel both in and out of the gym. There are specific stages of motor learning for human development including rolling over, crawling, walking and climbing; movement is inherent in our nature, it is what our bodies are designed to do. Anytime you learn a new exercise, try a new dance step or play a new sport you are developing new motor skills and there is a specific learning process. Dr. John Krakauer is the John C. Malone Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins University; it is his job to study how humans develop and learn new movement skills. On this episode of All About Fitness, Dr. John Krakauer and I discuss the motor learning process, the benefits of learning a new sport at any age and whether technology really can help you become better at a specific skill. Dr. Krakauer is known for his, "Is the Dumb Jock Really a Nerd' hypothesis which posits that skilled movement requires genius-level function from the brain. Zach Schonbrun is a writer who covers the business of sports and the author of the Performance Cortex which explains how science is changing the way that athletes train and compete. Technology doesn't just mean computer chips and nanobytes, anything that enhances human performance could be considered technology. The TRX Suspension Trainer is an excellent example of one type of technology - it's not complicated but it does an effective job of challenging the body to work harder. iPhones, fitness trackers and even algorithms that can push forward or predict the workouts you should be doing based on what you have been doing are all examples of different types of technology which is why Chris Frankel, the Director of Human Performance for TRX, is the PERFECT person to contribute to the All About Fitness series on fitness and technology. Technology disrupts industries. Netflix eliminated Blockbuster - now instead of driving somewhere to argue about what to watch before falling asleep in front of the TV, we can do it from the comfort of our homes. From scheduling and paying for fitness classes via an app to fitness trackers and wearable technology that provide data on your exercise efforts to cardio equipment with integrated TVs to the social media platforms that allow you to take sweaty selfies after you’re done exercising, technology is indeed having an impact on how we exercise. This is a first episode in a special series looking into how technology is hacking fitness. The series starts off with Bryan K. O'Rourke, an investor and serial entrepreneur who currently serves as the President of the Fitness Industry Technology Council and the host of the Fitness + Technology podcast making him the perfect person to launch this series. Technology can support our fitness efforts in a number of different ways, but are there limits as to how technology can help us? Do we need technology to get the results we want from exercise and if so, what kind? We answer these questions and more on this first episode in a special All About Fitness series on fitness technology Follow Bryan O'Rourke on Instagram and Twitter: @bryankorouke Do you want to learn the best exercises to enhance your quality of life? Exercise is physical stress applied to the body, it is only one road on the arduous journey to your goals. Yes, exercise is important, but too much could actually be bad for your health and keep you from reaching your goals. How your body recovers from the stresses of the workouts that you do can make a huge difference in the results from your efforts. The recovery part of your workout program could be that last road to the final destination of your fitness goals. That’s why fitness industry icons and veteran personal trainers Rick Richey and Aaron Drogoszewski started ReCOVER a studio in New York City that focuses specifically on the recovery component of the fitness process. On this episode of All About Fitness we talk about the role that recovery plays in helping elite athletes achieve optimal performance, what that means for you and why you should be doing the same recovery strategies after your own workouts. There is an important mis-perception among fitness consumers: that the only reason to lift weights is to get big muscles. Nothing could be further from the truth. Exercise is important for maintaining good health and a high quality of life and strength training with weights is a critical component of exercise that delivers many benefits that make a long, healthy, enjoyable life possible. You may know that strength training should be a part of your overall workout program, but it can be difficult to know exactly what to do in order to get the results that you want. That’s why workout programs like Men’s Health Muscle After 40 are a great option - they provide the guidance and direction, you provide the energy for the workouts. On this episode of All About Fitness David Jack and Mike Piercy talk about their role with the Muscle After 40 program, we discuss how we each have changed our own workouts as we have progressed through our 40s and we share the types of workouts that are best for people who want to enjoy their favorite activities no matter how old they become. Group fitness classes are consistently one of the most popular programs or services offered by a health club or fitness studio. Exercising with other people creates a social environment that makes the process more enjoyable. Many people also enjoy group fitness because it is a chance to shut down the brain and let the body do the work while an instructor coaches the class through a workout. Body Pump. CX Works. Grit. Body Combat. All are group fitness classes designed by Les Mills. Working out in a group setting has come a long way since Jane Fonda pulled on some leg warmers and encouraged us to 'go for the burn!' While Ms. Fonda and the early pioneers of group fitness were responsible for creating their own dance-based workout programs, group fitness has evolved and now includes a variety of different formats for all levels of exercise experience. As the fitness industry has matured it is now possible to make a living as a full-time group fitness instructor In general, there are 2 different types of group fitness instructors: Freestyle instructors design their own workouts for the classes they teach Pre-choreographed instructors teach a workout designed by a third party. Les Mills is a chain of health clubs in New Zealand that has changed how the world does group fitness. Les Mills was the first club operator to realize there might be a market for formatted group fitness classes that provide a consistent, effective, safe and, most importantly, FUN workout experience. On this episode of All About Fitness, Bryce Hastings, the Science Director for Les Mills, pulls back the curtain and shares how Les Mills designs the workouts and conducts the research that makes thousands of people around the world get sweaty every day. Learn how Les Mills identifies the programs that will be successful as well as conducts the research to prove the benefits of the workout. This is the FIRST EVER swapcast on AAF! Rick and Drogo, the hosts of the OMNIA Fitness podcast, invited me on their show so I hit record and am posting my version on All About Fitness. Besides hosting a killer podcast, Rick and Aaron opened Recover - the FIRST studio in NYC focused specifically on the recovery phase of exercise, and are educators for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) where they teach human movement science to prospective fitness professionals. Our conversation ranges from discussing body image issues for fitness instructors to identifying the popular fitness personalities who may be complete frauds to the benefits of being a master trainer responsible for educating other fitness professionals. Admit it, how many times have you shown up to a workout only because you feel guilty and want to 'punish' yourself with exercise because of a few choices you made in the previous 24-48 hours? When done properly, exercise should focus on enhancing your quality of life so that you can enjoy the most it has to offer as opposed to being used as a punishment. One key to learning how to enjoy exercise is by working with the right fitness professionals who can help you learn how to establish a positive, successful relationship with fitness which is the speciality of Jamie Atlas, a Denver-based personal trainer and fitness studio owner who has repeatedly been recognized as one of the top personal trainers in the Denver area. After a brief hiatus, All About Fitness returns featuring a powerful interview with Jamie Atlas, a former professional basketball player-turned personal trainer, who specializes in helping his clients establish a positive, successful and rewarding relationship with exercise. If Monday is international chest day - the day when every guy goes to the gym to do their favorite exercise: the barbell chest press, and other isolation movements for strengthening the pectoralis major and minor muscles, then which day should people strengthen their fascia? Strength training with linear patterns is the best way to strengthen your muscle, but there's another tissue in your body that is often overlooked - your fascia and elastic connective tissues. Muscle tissue can be described as the contractile element, fascia is the elastic component - they are different types of tissue; yes, they complement each other, however they function differently and need different exercises. On this Quick Fit Tip learn more about your fascia and the best types of exercise to strengthen your connective tissues so that you can improve your movement skill while reducing the risk of injury. Why do you exercise? What causes you to push yourself when you're already tired? How do you get motivated to achieve a challenging fitness goal? There are two primary types of motivation: intrinsic - working on a task for our own needs or interests and extrinsic - taking on a task to please or to meet the expectations of others; both types can be useful for giving you the ability to accomplish a daunting fitness goal. On AAF110 Hannah Eden, a popular fitness influencer on Instagram and a founder of the Pump Fit Club fitness studio in South Florida, shared how the loss of a close friend motivated her to join the fight to F*** cancer. When we spoke, Hannah was in the process of training for the Ring Road Race around Iceland to raise money in the memory of her friend, Jessica Boswell. On this episode of All About Fitness, Hannah returns to talk about the experience and how she stay motivated to focus on her goal of completing the road even when her body was screaming at her to stop. In addition, Hannah updates us on what she is doing to help others become motivated to reach their goals. In professional sports the job of an athlete is to use his or her skills and abilities to help a team win games. The role of a coach is to teach players specific strategies and tactics of a sport, or a specific position in a sport, so they can out-perform their competition. The function of a strength and conditioning coach is to keep athletes fit, healthy and on the field (or court) so they can properly execute the plays as designed and instructed by the team coaches. Yes this may be biased, but it is my opinion that the strength and conditioning coach has one of the most important jobs on a team because helping athletes get in shape and stay injury-free has the greatest impact on whether or not a team is able to perform to the best of it's ability. On this episode of All About Fitness, Todd Wright, the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Philadelphia 76ers NBA team, shares how he helps his athletes get in top physical shape and prepare off the court to help the team beat the competition. Coach Wright's insights can help you to identify the most effective way to get in shape and stay game-ready for your favorite sport or recreational activity; if it's good enough to help one of Coach Wright's players, it's good enough to help you be your best! Note: NBA Star Kevin Durant credits Todd with having a significant impact on his playing career. Check out this video of Todd coaching his athletes through a complete dynamic warm-up - if it works for a NBA player, it can work for you! One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over yet expecting different results. This definition is a perfect description for how many people approach fitness, they do the same workout repeatedly yet want it to produce a different outcome. Pushing yourself to try a new physical challenge is one way to break out of a routine with an exercise program that can deliver results. On this episode of All About Fitness guest Alex Isaly talks about his recent participation in the Race Across America (RAAM) and how training for endurance events can help you push past your limits. Alex is a personal trainer and fitness instructor who teaches group programs for Life Time Fitness and travels the country certifying fitness instructors in Spartan Strong, the group fitness program developed to help people prepare to complete a Spartan Race. Despite his busy work and travel schedule Alex still makes his own fitness a priority and finds time to train for grueling endurance events. There are a number of different ways to exercise; some people (like your humble host) are pretty mainstream and straight-forward - just find something relatively heavy and lift it, while others, like this episode's guest, fitness instructor Gerren Liles, are extremely creative and come up with cool and unique ways to sequence a variety of moves together into a single exercise. On this episode of All About Fitness Gerren, a top fitness instructor in the largest fitness market in the US, shares how he made the transition from teaching kids to making adults sweaty. Gerren tells how he got his start and provides some simple steps that you can take if you too want to cast off your corporate overlords to make a living in workout clothes. Exercise science is an oxymoron. Yes, there is tangible evidence that suggests how different types of exercise can influence the physiological systems of the human body. However, there are so many variables: the amount of weight used, the exercises performed, equipment used, the quality of nutrition or the amount of rest, that it can be really difficult to know exactly how your body will respond to an exercise program. Top personal trainers, strength coaches, researchers and educators will NEVER give you a definitive answer about how your body will respond to a workout and are ALWAYS learning how exercise effects the human body. The point is that NO ONE can tell you exactly how your body will react to any type of exercise, it will always take some trial-and-error to identify the most effective workouts for your needs. Mike Boyle is a first-generation strength coach, meaning he was in the first generation of professionals who were able to make a living as a conditioning coach working exclusively with athletes. Coach Boyle owns Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning outside of Boston, MA, besides helping multiple teams and athletes compete at the highest levels he is an educator and author who is well known for changing his mind or adjusting his coaching techniques when he realizes that he could be doing something in a different, better, more efficient way. On this episode of All About Fitness, Coach Boyle provides insights into how he stays on top of the constantly evolving field of exercise science and how he has adjusted his approach to programming over the course of his career. If you thought you knew everything about fitness or exercise, this episode will cause you to rethink your approach to how you train. Because of it's low barrier to entry, all you need is a good pair of shoes and a trail, running is one of the most popular forms of exercise. However, while almost everyone CAN run, only an elite few will be able to push or break through the existing boundaries of human performance. On this episode of All About Fitness, runner and author Alex Hutchinson talks about his new book: Endure: Body, Mind and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance and how groups like the Nike Sports Science lab are look for various ways to shatter existing limits of what the human body can achieve. The fitness culture is still relatively young; health clubs have only been a part of mainstream society for the past forty-or-so years. Before the modern health clubs we're used to today, the early days of fitness were heavily influenced by the Gay (now LGBTQ) community. In response to a recent flap about Pride month and Crossfit, Dr. Natalia Petrzela, a Professor of History and a host of the Past Present podcast, wrote this column about the evolution of fitness culture and the role that LGBTQ individuals played in that process. What are the most important benefits from exercise? Is it burning calories and sculpting muscles so that you look better? Is it enhancing your performance so that you can play your favorite sports better? How about the fact that regular exercise can improve your health to reduce the risk of developing a dangerous disease? Yes, these are all important benefits from exercise but probably THE MOST important benefit is that exercise can help strengthen your brain.
