We can't bottle Brook Benten's energy, but speaking to her sure comes close! This was a high-octane episode that combines Barbara's favorite topics: running (and exercise writ large), and storytelling. Just like with writing, you've got to earn your sweat. Brook Benten, author of Sweat, discusses her professional and personal experiences that led to this book. Part memoir and part exercise guide, Sweat targets women and moms who are looking to reclaim a more authentic life balance. Brook Benten is a GIANT in the fitness industry: since trading in her twirling batons for step boxes, Benten has been inspiring exercisers for over twenty years. You may know Benten for her dozens of workout DVDs. She has represented brands including Livestrong, Hyperwear, Prevention, Power Music, and Lebert Fitness. Johnny Goldberg (“Johnny G,” the inventor of Spinning) asked Benten to represent his brand as one of six international Johnny G Spirit Bike Master Trainers. After graduating from Texas State University with a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science and a minor in Business Administration, she earned an M.Ed. in Physical Education with an emphasis in Sport and Fitness Administration from The University of Houston. Her gold-standard certifications include ACE Personal Trainer, ACSM Exercise Physiologist, and Physical Mind Institute Pilates. Benten is among the world's top 1% of kettlebell instructors to train under Pavel Tsatsouline, having earned RKC (Russian Kettlebell Challenge), SFG (StrongFirst Girya), and SFG II (StrongFirst Girya Level II) kettlebell certifications. Benten has lectured at universities, led presentations at national fitness conferences, and served as an adjunct faculty member. Her 9-hour kettlebell curriculum is used to teach personal trainers and fitness instructors how to safely and effectively train with kettlebells. In 2023, she published her first book, “Lift Light, Get Lean,” and completed her Professional Life Coach certification through Baylor University. Benten is the wellness travel writer for Texas Lifestyle Magazine, hosts a podcast honoring self-sovereignty by building emotional and relational boundaries, and continues to inspire women to get moving. In this episode, Benten emphasizes the importance of self-care and finding balance as a mother and encourages women to prioritize their own well-being. She also opens up about her experiences with trauma, sobriety, and the challenges of facing uncomfortable emotions. The "Hip Hinge" (or the athletic ready position) has been called the most important sports movement. There are many ways to teach the hip hinge. I prefer teaching it using a light two-pound "SandBell" disc. As a consultant, Pete has experience delivering education and content solutions for a variety of health and fitness organizations including the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), Reebok, 24-Hour Fitness, Core Health & Fitness, ActivMotion Bar, Hyperwear and Terra Core Fitness. Frequently quoted as a fitness expert in publications such as The New York Times, Washington Post, San Diego Union-Tribune, SELF, Glamour, and Shape Magazine and featured as a fitness expert for TV news outlets including WRC-NBC (DC), Fox News, Fox 5 San Diego, and NBC7 San Diego, Pete is a sought-after media resource for accurate, in-depth insights on how to get results from exercise. Stay In Touch With Pete Website Instagram Facebook Twitter Podcast Thanks to: This Episode is brought to you by the help of Yes Fitness Music. To try their no-credit card needed, 14-day free trial click here: Show Notes We begin the show by Pete reminding me that we had met in the early nineties when he was an assistant, checking presenters in at the ECA conference in NYC. This leads to us talking about the importance of creating our own opportunities, including volunteering at local conferences. Pete shares that his fitness journey began when he was working on Capitol Hill. He grew up in the DC area and after college returned to Washington, and it was while he was working on Capitol Hill that he began working at the front desk at a local gym. After he earned a certification from the American Council on Exercise, he eventually went on to work for ACE directly in 2008. Along the way, he got his master's degree but the one thing that he took from politics was the power of networking and getting to know people. Pete talks about the benefits that can come from working within a gym chain. It is here where you can get a lot of reps, teaching, and training. Pete suggests that one way to have a solid career is to work within an organization, do the most you can, work 25 to 30 hours a week and make a very good living. Then to expand your career ask your company for ways that you can expand your services, and help them by offering workshops, etc. for both trainers and customers. We talk about the hustle and grind that has to happen behind any successful career or venture. We both discuss how it can look easy to be at the top, especially with social media but we all have to remember that there was a climb to get there. Pete shares his thoughts on the importance of learning both within and outside the industry that you are in. He talks about the need to develop skillsets in leadership, marketing, sales, and social media. Staying on the topic of social media we talk about how to be resilient and move forward when there is so much opportunity for people to share their opinions of us on the internet. We talk about whether to niche down in one area of expertise or to cast a wider net. Pete shares something a friend told with him many years ago when he said, “you want to be an inch wide and a mile deep.” However, at the end of the day, we both believe the most important thing is to do something and get started. Pete talks about the importance of doing your best- daily. On bringing your best effort forward to every day, regardless of whether it's a good day or bad one. It is when we do our best and create a positive environment for others, everything will fall into place. We close out the conversation with Pete sharing a daily practice that we can all use to stay on track and moving toward our goals, called S.W.OT.Strengths - look at your strengths. What are you doing well? Weaknesses – what are your weaknesses and can you turn them into an opportunity? Opportunities – where are they and where can you create more? Threats – where do you feel challenged? Which elements are in your control and which are outside of your control? So this week I encourage you to remember your strengths, look at areas where you could improve as opportunities to grow instead of signs of weakness. Explore new opportunities and follow through on existing gateways to greatness and view your threats as motivation to rise.
On Wednesday, August 7 news broke that Stephen Ross, a real estate developer who happens to be a majority owner of Equinox health clubs and Soul Cycle indoor cycling studios, was hosting a fundraiser for Donald Trump at $250,000 per plate (see CNN story HERE). Equinox and Soul Cycle are two brands built on inclusivity and diversity with a large percentage of membership coming from the LGTBQ+ community; when the membership found out that their money was going to a major fundraiser for Trump, #boycottequinox and #boycottsoulcycle became trending hashtags on Twitter. Stephen Ross has the right to spend his money however he wants which includes making contributions to any politician he chooses; however, his customers also have the right to spend their money where they choose. On this episode of All About Fitness I'm joined by Zack Ford, a writer who covers the Trump administration for ThinkProgress as well as publishing his own newsletter on LGTBQ+ issues - Fording the River Styx - which covered the story HERE. Zack shares his insights on why so many members of the community feel betrayed. In addition, Dr. Natalia Petrzela, an Associate Professor of American History at the New School in NYC and co-host of the Past-Present podcast, makes a return to provide her unique insights into the consumer reaction, the boycott and whether it really will make an impact on the company. This is a fascinating discussion about the reaction to the owner of a fitness brand supporting a politician who has actively marginalized many consumers of his brand. Follow this link to listen to the All About Fitness episode where Dr. Petrzela discusses the LGTBQ+ influence on the fitness industry (#fascinating) Follow Pete McCall on Instagram: @PeteMcCall_fitness Do you want to learn how to use exercise to enhance your quality of life or slow down the aging process (it can)? Working harder than everyone else. Starving yourself by limiting caloric intake. Exercising to the point of exhaustion. Working out every day no matter how you feel. Which of these methods can help you get the results you want from your exercise program? Yes, hard work is essential but when it comes to changing your body through exercise it may not be the most important thing that can help you get the results you want. Is there a 'best method' for reaching your health and fitness goals? Can there really be a secret to long-term success and, if so, what is it ? On this episode of All About Fitness Don Saladino, a NYC-based coach and owner of the Drive 495 fitness studio with over twenty years of helping people reach their goals, returns to share his insights on what you can do to reach yours. Don works with an extremely A-list clientele, helping many of them to prepare for roles in movies and on TV, but his suggestions can be used by anyone who wants to improve their health and fitness. You'll be surprised to find out that while hard work is important, there is one fundamental trait shared by all of those who have been able to reach and maintain their goals (and you'll have to listen to learn what it is). Exercise comes easy to some people while others would rather do anything else than sweat. Many of us who now work full-time in the fitness industry started because we struggled to exercise ourselves and once we were able to reap the benefits from making it a habit we wanted to help others learn how to make exercise a part of their lives as well. Kenny Santucci, the Director of Body by Solace in New York City, is an example of someone who struggled with his weight yet has now dedicated his career to helping others get in the best shape of their lives. Kenny is well known for multiple TV appearances and being an amazing on-air TV host, but what makes him a great fitness coach is his commitment to helping his clients become the best version of themselves. On this episode of All About Fitness, Kenny joins me to talk about his journey struggling with his weight, how he got started in fitness, the benefits of high intensity exercise and why his post-workout brunches are such an important part of his fitness experience. If you've ever struggled with making exercise a habit, this conversation will provide you with some important insights on how you can take the steps to make fitness a regular part of your life. Think about the toughest fittest challenge you've ever done... It probably doesn't come close to the Spartan Death Race (the OG of the Spartan Race Series) or running an ultra-marathon across the Sahara or competing in a powerlifting competition or setting the Guinness Book of World Records record for the most exercise in 24 hours (hence earning the title of the World's Fittest Man). One man has done all of that, Joe Decker, the founder of Gut Check Fitness - when it comes to fitness, Joe is definitely one of the fittest in the world, in fact, he is such a unique individual that he WON the Death Race - twice. Fitness certifications, like most other professional credentials, require fitness professionals to earn continuing education credits (CECs) to maintain the certification. There are many ways to earn CECs including online education, live workshops or attending the largest fitness education convention in the US, IDEA World. IDEA is a trade association of fitness professionals and organizes the annual World event every year in an effort to provide their members with the CECs necessary to maintain their professional credentials. The human body is like a cell phone; a phone is made up of hardware, specifically bits of plastic, metal and glass - what makes the phone function is the operating system. In the human body our muscles and skeletal structures are the hardware, our central nervous system (CNS) is akin to our operating system which allows us to function. The data received by the CNS is critical for helping you to move and perform your best. The shoes you wear can affect how your body receives data from the environment, specifically the ground. Our feet are designed to absorb force when we step on the ground and to generate force by pushing off against it. Wearing the wrong type of shoes can change how your feet, and your entire body, function. Galahad Clark is a 7th generation member of the Clark family that makes Clark shoes; however, he realized that many shoes are poorly designed and do not support the natural function of the feet they're supposed to protect. As a result, Galahad started the VIVOBAREFOOT shoe company to create minimalist shoes that allow for optimal foot biomechanics. Recently Mr. Clark & VIVOBAREFOOT produced the movie, Shoespiracy to tell and show how the large shoe companies design shoes for profits not to promote optimal human performance (as many claim). On this episode of All About Fitness, Galahad discusses what motivated him to disrupt the shoe industry; we discuss the benefits of wearing minimalist shoes and address the proper way to incorporate them into your exercise program. If you've ever wondered whether or not your shoes affect how you move then this episode is for YOU! Every time you take a step your feet interact with the ground which sends forces upwards into the body; at the same time the weight of your body presses down on top of the foot. The foot is structurally designed to handle these forces, however if your feet do NOT function properly it could affect many other parts of your body. On this episode of All About Fitness, Dr. Emily Splichal, a podiatrist with a movement background in gymnastics and experience as a fitness instructor, talks about the role your feet play in how your body is designed to move. We discuss the role that minimalist shoes could play in your fitness program, in addition, Dr. Splichal provides important insights on what you can be doing to improve the health and function of your feet. There is so much information about nutrition, some of it based on actual research while a lot of it is just based on pure anecdotal experience. NO nutrition program will work for every person; whether you want to lose weight, gain muscle or improve performance if you are looking for the healthiest eating plan for your needs then it is important to work with a nutrition professional who can perform a proper assessment to identify your specific needs. On this episode of All About Fitness, Ashley Koff, RDN, founder of the Better Nutrition Program talks about the role of assessments in identifying specific needs. Ms. Koff has a background as nutritionist working with many celebrities and now conducts education programs for fitness and wellness professionals as well as offering coaching services to individuals to help them develop the best nutrition plans for their needs. This is a fun conversation with a leading dietitian-nutritionist that will have you thinking differently about the food that you put in your body. We deal with stress at home, on the job and at the gym (exercise is physical stress applied to the body); we tend to think of stress as a bad thing, yet according to Dr. Julia DiGangi, a psychologist who studies the effects of stress on the brain, some stress could actually be good for us. Dr. DiGangi is the founder of NeuroHealth Partners, an organization devoted to understanding how to optimize wellness and healthy living, on this episode of All About Fitness, she explains how stress can help us become more resilient and capable of withstanding the hard challenges that we'll face in life. Age is no reason to slow down or stop your favorite activities. The only thing that should change as we get older is that we should focus on exercising smarter, NOT harder. To make this point and to celebrate the most important person in each of our lives, this special episode of All About Fitness features an interview with Sonja Friend-Uhl, the oldest American woman to break the 5 minute mile barrier, the recent winner of the 45-49yo Women's 800m at the International Indoor World Track Championships in Poland, a recent inductee to the College of William and Mary Athletic Hall of Fame and a mother to two amazing children (she's also married to an awesome guy - so she really does have it all). During our interview, Sonja shares her approach to fitness which has allowed her to excel as an athlete and compete against college-age women young enough to be her daughters (beating many of them) as well as winning a world championship against others of her own age and experience. If you need the motivation to stay with your favorite activities as you get older, then this special Mother's Day edition is for you! When muscles contract they produce the forces that move the body; fascia is the connective that transmits and distributes those forces to help the body move. Fascia is an integral component of how your body moves, yet it is often overlooked in traditional exercise programs and could be the cause of the chronic pain or soreness you feel after a workout. No, this podcast is NOT becoming All About Fascia, but when you get the opportunity to speak with Sue Hitzmann, a founding member of the Fascia Research Society and author of 2 books about how to properly take care of your fascia, it's important to give her the microphone so she can help you understand what might be causing that nagging pain that you have to deal with every time you exercise. Sue Hitzmann is the creator of the MELT Method and the author of The MELT Method - a book describing the role of fascia in movement and how to perform proper self-care to reduce the risk of injury. Sue has recently released MELT Performance, a follow-up book that provides more detail on how you should care for you body so that you can participate in your favorite activities well into the later years of the aging process. On this episode we discuss common mistakes that could cause pain and some simple movement strategies that could help you avoid it. Legs. Chest. Back. Arms. Core. Fascia. Emotions. What? Yes, most exercise programs will focus on specific muscles or parts of the body, but when was the last time you walked into a gym to strengthen your fascia or train your emotions? The truth is that our bodies are complex organisms containing numerous systems (digestive, nervous, muscular) each one affected by exercise. Your fascia is the elastic tissue that surrounds every single muscle fiber; muscles generate force and fascia transmits that force through the body. If you are not doing the proper exercise or self-care techniques for your fascia, it WILL affect how you move and could be a potential cause of injury. When it comes to our emotions, there is a direct connection between how we feel and how we move; motion influence emotion and emotion influences motion. On this episode of All About Fitness, Rodney Corn, a co-founder of Feel Soma one of the smartest, most innovative fitness educators in the world who helped create the education programs for PTA Global and NASM shares his insights on fascia and emotions and how each can have a significant impact on how you move and feel both in and out of the gym. There are specific stages of motor learning for human development including rolling over, crawling, walking and climbing; movement is inherent in our nature, it is what our bodies are designed to do. Malone Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins University; it is his job to study how humans develop and learn new movement skills. On this episode of All About Fitness, Dr. John Krakauer and I discuss the motor learning process, the benefits of learning a new sport at any age and whether technology really can help you become better at a specific skill. The brain is one of the most powerful organs in the human body, yet how often does one walk through the door of a health club thinking, "today is the day I train my brain?" Yes, we are all well aware of the benefits of exercise for our muscles and heart, however exercise also provides numerous benefits for the most important muscle in our body - the brain. This is the second appearance by Ryan Glatt, the founder of Somatiq and a Brain Health Expert at the Pacific Neuroscience Institute where he uses exercise to help people improve their cognitive function. Technology doesn't just mean computer chips and nanobytes, anything that enhances human performance could be considered technology. The TRX Suspension Trainer is an excellent example of one type of technology - it's not complicated but it does an effective job of challenging the body to work harder. iPhones, fitness trackers and even algorithms that can push forward or predict the workouts you should be doing based on what you have been doing are all examples of different types of technology which is why Chris Frankel, the Director of Human Performance for TRX, is the PERFECT person to contribute to the All About Fitness series on fitness and technology. In our conversation, Chris discusses how technology can improve our fitness as well as potential areas where it may have shortcomings in improving human performance potential. Technology disrupts industries. Netflix eliminated Blockbuster - now instead of driving somewhere to argue about what to watch before falling asleep in front of the TV, we can do it from the comfort of our homes. From scheduling and paying for fitness classes via an app to fitness trackers and wearable technology that provide data on your exercise efforts to cardio equipment with integrated TVs to the social media platforms that allow you to take sweaty selfies after you’re done exercising, technology is indeed having an impact on how we exercise. This is a first episode in a special series looking into how technology is hacking fitness. The series starts off with Bryan K. O'Rourke, an investor and serial entrepreneur who currently serves as the President of the Fitness Industry Technology Council and the host of the Fitness + Technology podcast making him the perfect person to launch this series. Technology can support our fitness efforts in a number of different ways, but are there limits as to how technology can help us? Do we need technology to get the results we want from exercise and if so, what kind? We answer these questions and more on this first episode in a special All About Fitness series on fitness technology Follow Bryan O'Rourke on Instagram and Twitter: @bryankorouke Do you want to learn the best exercises to enhance your quality of life? Exercise is physical stress applied to the body, it is only one road on the arduous journey to your goals. Yes, exercise is important, but too much could actually be bad for your health and keep you from reaching your goals. How your body recovers from the stresses of the workouts that you do can make a huge difference in the results from your efforts. The recovery part of your workout program could be that last road to the final destination of your fitness goals. That’s why fitness industry icons and veteran personal trainers Rick Richey and Aaron Drogoszewski started ReCOVER a studio in New York City that focuses specifically on the recovery component of the fitness process. On this episode of All About Fitness we talk about the role that recovery plays in helping elite athletes achieve optimal performance, what that means for you and why you should be doing the same recovery strategies after your own workouts. Group fitness classes are consistently one of the most popular programs or services offered by a health club or fitness studio. Exercising with other people creates a social environment that makes the process more enjoyable. Many people also enjoy group fitness because it is a chance to shut down the brain and let the body do the work while an instructor coaches the class through a workout. Body Pump. CX Works. Grit. Body Combat. All are group fitness classes designed by Les Mills. Working out in a group setting has come a long way since Jane Fonda pulled on some leg warmers and encouraged us to 'go for the burn!' While Ms. Fonda and the early pioneers of group fitness were responsible for creating their own dance-based workout programs, group fitness has evolved and now includes a variety of different formats for all levels of exercise experience. As the fitness industry has matured it is now possible to make a living as a full-time group fitness instructor In general, there are 2 different types of group fitness instructors: Freestyle instructors design their own workouts for the classes they teach Pre-choreographed instructors teach a workout designed by a third party. Les Mills is a chain of health clubs in New Zealand that has changed how the world does group fitness. Les Mills was the first club operator to realize there might be a market for formatted group fitness classes that provide a consistent, effective, safe and, most importantly, FUN workout experience. On this episode of All About Fitness, Bryce Hastings, the Science Director for Les Mills, pulls back the curtain and shares how Les Mills designs the workouts and conducts the research that makes thousands of people around the world get sweaty every day. Learn how Les Mills identifies the programs that will be successful as well as conducts the research to prove the benefits of the workout. Admit it, how many times have you shown up to a workout only because you feel guilty and want to 'punish' yourself with exercise because of a few choices you made in the previous 24-48 hours? When done properly, exercise should focus on enhancing your quality of life so that you can enjoy the most it has to offer as opposed to being used as a punishment. One key to learning how to enjoy exercise is by working with the right fitness professionals who can help you learn how to establish a positive, successful relationship with fitness which is the speciality of Jamie Atlas, a Denver-based personal trainer and fitness studio owner who has repeatedly been recognized as one of the top personal trainers in the Denver area. After a brief hiatus, All About Fitness returns featuring a powerful interview with Jamie Atlas, a former professional basketball player-turned personal trainer, who specializes in helping his clients establish a positive, successful and rewarding relationship with exercise. If Monday is international chest day - the day when every guy goes to the gym to do their favorite exercise: the barbell chest press, and other isolation movements for strengthening the pectoralis major and minor muscles, then which day should people strengthen their fascia? Strength training with linear patterns is the best way to strengthen your muscle, but there's another tissue in your body that is often overlooked - your fascia and elastic connective tissues. Muscle tissue can be described as the contractile element, fascia is the elastic component - they are different types of tissue; yes, they complement each other, however they function differently and need different exercises. On this Quick Fit Tip learn more about your fascia and the best types of exercise to strengthen your connective tissues so that you can improve your movement skill while reducing the risk of injury. Why do you exercise? What causes you to push yourself when you're already tired? How do you get motivated to achieve a challenging fitness goal? There are two primary types of motivation: intrinsic - working on a task for our own needs or interests and extrinsic - taking on a task to please or to meet the expectations of others; both types can be useful for giving you the ability to accomplish a daunting fitness goal. On AAF110 Hannah Eden, a popular fitness influencer on Instagram and a founder of the Pump Fit Club fitness studio in South Florida, shared how the loss of a close friend motivated her to join the fight to F*** cancer. When we spoke, Hannah was in the process of training for the Ring Road Race around Iceland to raise money in the memory of her friend, Jessica Boswell. On this episode of All About Fitness, Hannah returns to talk about the experience and how she stay motivated to focus on her goal of completing the road even when her body was screaming at her to stop. In addition, Hannah updates us on what she is doing to help others become motivated to reach their goals. In professional sports the job of an athlete is to use his or her skills and abilities to help a team win games. The role of a coach is to teach players specific strategies and tactics of a sport, or a specific position in a sport, so they can out-perform their competition. The function of a strength and conditioning coach is to keep athletes fit, healthy and on the field (or court) so they can properly execute the plays as designed and instructed by the team coaches. Yes this may be biased, but it is my opinion that the strength and conditioning coach has one of the most important jobs on a team because helping athletes get in shape and stay injury-free has the greatest impact on whether or not a team is able to perform to the best of it's ability. On this episode of All About Fitness, Todd Wright, the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Philadelphia 76ers NBA team, shares how he helps his athletes get in top physical shape and prepare off the court to help the team beat the competition. Coach Wright's insights can help you to identify the most effective way to get in shape and stay game-ready for your favorite sport or recreational activity; if it's good enough to help one of Coach Wright's players, it's good enough to help you be your best! Note: NBA Star Kevin Durant credits Todd with having a significant impact on his playing career. Check out this video of Todd coaching his athletes through a complete dynamic warm-up - if it works for a NBA player, it can work for you! One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over yet expecting different results. This definition is a perfect description for how many people approach fitness, they do the same workout repeatedly yet want it to produce a different outcome. Pushing yourself to try a new physical challenge is one way to break out of a routine with an exercise program that can deliver results. On this episode of All About Fitness guest Alex Isaly talks about his recent participation in the Race Across America (RAAM) and how training for endurance events can help you push past your limits. Alex is a personal trainer and fitness instructor who teaches group programs for Life Time Fitness and travels the country certifying fitness instructors in Spartan Strong, the group fitness program developed to help people prepare to complete a Spartan Race. Despite his busy work and travel schedule Alex still makes his own fitness a priority and finds time to train for grueling endurance events. There are a number of different ways to exercise; some people (like your humble host) are pretty mainstream and straight-forward - just find something relatively heavy and lift it, while others, like this episode's guest, fitness instructor Gerren Liles, are extremely creative and come up with cool and unique ways to sequence a variety of moves together into a single exercise. On this episode of All About Fitness Gerren, a top fitness instructor in the largest fitness market in the US, shares how he made the transition from teaching kids to making adults sweaty. Gerren tells how he got his start and provides some simple steps that you can take if you too want to cast off your corporate overlords to make a living in workout clothes. Exercise science is an oxymoron. Yes, there is tangible evidence that suggests how different types of exercise can influence the physiological systems of the human body. However, there are so many variables: the amount of weight used, the exercises performed, equipment used, the quality of nutrition or the amount of rest, that it can be really difficult to know exactly how your body will respond to an exercise program. Top personal trainers, strength coaches, researchers and educators will NEVER give you a definitive answer about how your body will respond to a workout and are ALWAYS learning how exercise effects the human body. The point is that NO ONE can tell you exactly how your body will react to any type of exercise, it will always take some trial-and-error to identify the most effective workouts for your needs. Mike Boyle is a first-generation strength coach, meaning he was in the first generation of professionals who were able to make a living as a conditioning coach working exclusively with athletes. Coach Boyle owns Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning outside of Boston, MA, besides helping multiple teams and athletes compete at the highest levels he is an educator and author who is well known for changing his mind or adjusting his coaching techniques when he realizes that he could be doing something in a different, better, more efficient way. On this episode of All About Fitness, Coach Boyle provides insights into how he stays on top of the constantly evolving field of exercise science and how he has adjusted his approach to programming over the course of his career. If you thought you knew everything about fitness or exercise, this episode will cause you to rethink your approach to how you train. Because of it's low barrier to entry, all you need is a good pair of shoes and a trail, running is one of the most popular forms of exercise. However, while almost everyone CAN run, only an elite few will be able to push or break through the existing boundaries of human performance. On this episode of All About Fitness, runner and author Alex Hutchinson talks about his new book: Endure: Body, Mind and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance and how groups like the Nike Sports Science lab are look for various ways to shatter existing limits of what the human body can achieve. Alex shares his story of how he transitioned from an elite runner on the Canadian National Team to earning a PhD in physics to becoming the Sweat Science columnist for Outside Magazine; we talk about how he has used his scientific training along with his interest in human performance to help you understand how to get the best performance from your body. The fitness culture is still relatively young; health clubs have only been a part of mainstream society for the past forty-or-so years. Before the modern health clubs we're used to today, the early days of fitness were heavily influenced by the Gay (now LGBTQ) community. In response to a recent flap about Pride month and Crossfit, Dr. Natalia Petrzela, a Professor of History and a host of the Past Present podcast, wrote this column about the evolution of fitness culture and the role that LGBTQ individuals played in that process. Get your history geek hats on, this is an awesome conversation and an in-depth look at the origins of the modern fitness culture. What are the most important benefits from exercise? Is it burning calories and sculpting muscles so that you look better? Is it enhancing your performance so that you can play your favorite sports better? How about the fact that regular exercise can improve your health to reduce the risk of developing a dangerous disease? Yes, these are all important benefits from exercise but probably THE MOST important benefit is that exercise can help strengthen your brain. That's right, exercise can not only strengthen your muscles but when done the right way it can improve your cognitive function to help you become smarter. Ryan Glatt, the founder of SomatIQ is a specialist in Brain Health Coaching, the ability to use exercise to improve how your brain functions. On this episode of All About Fitness, Ryan talks about the research that suggests how exercise can help improve all aspects of cognitive performance and shares some simple strategies for what you can start doing to train your brain. It's time to rethink the old stereotype of the dumb, brain-dead weightlifting enthusiast. A plethora (hat tip to SAT prep) of research suggests that exercise, especially of the high intensity variety, can help promote the growth of new brain cells via BDNF. On this Quick Fit Tip episode I talk about how exercise can help make you smarter and reduce the risk of the cognitive decline that can often accompany aging. If you want to learn more, THIS LINK takes you to the study referenced in the episode. Triathlon Taren is a brother from another Mother! We have a lot in common, as it turns out. We both were once out-of-shape, unmotivated young adults, headed down a path of self-destruction. We also both found the sport of triathlon (it found us, actually) and now make this sport our passion, our hobby, and our careers by helping others find that same joy. Triathlon Taren is a social media guru, with daily YouTube videos and two different podcasts. He also has an extensive series of videos, resources, and training plans geared at a beginner triathlete. In this interview, he talks about giving up his steady career as an Investment Advisor for the unknown renegade world of social media and on-line marketing. What's his formula for success? How has he grown his audience to many thousands in just a couple of years? How does he land interviews with some of the sports biggest names? He starts off by asking himself the question, "What makes me the happiest" and lives each day in the pursuit of answering that question. For many years, Triathlon Taren was stuck in the world of, "I Could Nevers," but today he is rocking the, "Yes I Can" movement. It's inspiring, funning, motivating and insightful!
