No one starts a career in fitness for the money. It is possible to earn a decent living but it’s a hustle and grind. Most fitness professionals get into the business because they genuinely care about helping others, but earning a decent living can be a challenge.  Approximately 20% of Americans have memberships to health clubs or visit fitness studios on a regular basis; many of these individuals are in the higher income brackets of society while the fitness professionals, the term for group fitness instructors and personal trainers, who serve them often struggle to earn a living.  On this episode of the All About Fitness podcast, Dr. Natalia Petrzela joins me to discuss the economics of being a fitness professional; specifically how challenging it can be to work as a relatively low-wage worker serving a high net worth demographic. Our conversation is based on this fascinating piece that Dr. Petrzela wrote about the Labor Economics of Being a Fitness Professional. Dr. Petrzela is an Associate Professor of History at the New School in New York City who studies, among other topics, how the fitness industry impacts our modern society. Dr. Petrzela is also a co-host of the Past-Present podcast which discusses how the lessons from historical events can apply to modern culture (it's fascinating for history geeks like myself). The 1976 hit Fly Like an Eagle by the Steve Miller Band contains the chorus, “Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping into the future,” which describes the annual transition of welcoming a new year. Because time, as Mr. Miller so accurately observed, does inevitably slip into the future being able to accurately predict what could happen in the coming days would be an invaluable resource.  Yet we all know the harsh reality, that the future is impossible to predict with any real accuracy; however, with enough information it is possible to formulate educated and insightful hypotheses about what could potentially unfold. Every year the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) releases a list of trends for the coming year - FOLLOW THIS LINK TO SEE THE TRENDS THEY IDENTIFIED FOR 2020 ACSM is not the only source to guesstimate the future of fitness, on this episode of the All About Fitness podcast, I dust off my crystal ball and look into the future to see what 2020 might have in store for those of us who like to exercise (or at least tolerate it).  On this episode, I review the ACSM list and then provide my own thoughts and insights on the fitness trends that will be popular in the coming year. The All About Fitness 2020 trends are based on my observations from traveling to speak at fitness events around the world, working with a variety of equipment and health club companies and from conversations with colleagues working in different capacities all over the fitness industry. According to School House Rock, necessity is the mother of invention (ok, it was really Plato). If you’re an athlete (even a retired one) you know that injuries happen. For athletes, many injuries are the result of making contact, either intentional or unintentional, with another player during competition. Other types of injuries can happen simply because muscles don’t work correctly. For example, muscle imbalances are a common occurrence (READ ABOUT THEM HERE) that could change joint function and ultimately cause an injury.  When an athlete has an injury often he or she will simply try to rehab it in order to return to play as quickly as possible. However, sometimes an athlete takes the opportunity of an injury to learn about the mechanism of injury so he or she can avoid future injuries.  Jesse Ohliger was a collegiate and professional football player whose career was cut short due to injury. As he was working through the rehab process Jesse developed a tool called the Breath Belt that can be used as a feedback tool to help athlete avoid the types of repetitive stress injuries and the resulting muscle imbalances that shortened his career.  On this episode of All About Fitness, Jesse joins me to talk about his experience with his injuries and how that led to the development of the Breath Belt, his tool that can help athletes, or anyone else, reduce the risk of injury during exercise. You will hear why elite athletes from different types of sports are using the breath belt to enhance their physical performance. It has been said that necessity is the mother of invention, on this episode of all about fitness you’ll hear about how the necessity of overcoming an injury led to the invention of a fitness tool that could help you to enhance the quality of your life.  Follow the Breath Belt on Instagram to see how athletes are using it to enhance their performance: @thebreathbelt To see the types of exercises and workouts that can enhance your quality of life, follow Pete McCall on Instagram: @PeteMcCall_fitness The learn the exercises and workouts that can enhance your quality of life AND slow down the again process then pick up a copy of: Smarter Workouts: the Science of Exercise Made Simple Support the sponsor of All About Fitness: Terra Core Fitness - the ULTIMATE fitness platform for your workouts; use code AAF to save 15% on the purchase of a Terra Core of your own Instagram: @terracorefitness - check out to see out of the cool exercises that can be done! Generation X is defined as all of the people born between 1964 and 1978 (give or take). Those of us in Generation X do things differently and as we were growing up created a number of fun, exciting sports like skateboarding, mountain biking, snow boarding and BMX. Adventure sports competitions like the X-Games on ESPN were then produced as a way to introduce the world to the amazing physical feats performed by these athletes. Physical activity is key for long term health. Physical activity includes all kinds of general movements that are performed throughout the day while exercises is a specific type of physical activity performed for the purpose of a particular outcome. We all know that exercise is important and can provide many benefits including optimal health. What many people do NOT know is the secret for how to make physical activity a lifelong activity, however those of us in Generation X have learned this secret and you’re going to learn it on this episode of All About Fitness.  Generation X is now in our 40s and 50s; many of us in this age bracket get exercise NOT in the four walls of a gym but out in the natural environment enjoying activities like mountain biking, surfing, downhill skiing and snowboarding. Yes, going to a gym to exercise is important, yet the REAL secret to long-term health and wellness is being physically active in all parts of life, not just in the four walls of a gym. Many physical activities provide the types of stimuli that lead physical benefits, however only a few types of exercise can provide important mental benefits and even fewer create the level of enjoyment that lead to a lifetime of health and wellness. If you’re a parent who loves to exercise, yet struggle to find ways to get your kids excited about physical activity, then this episode of All About Fitness is for you. John Buultjens is the Global Brand manager for Haro, a bicycle company that specializes in making the BMX bikes used in action sports competitions like the X-Games. On this episode of All About Fitness, John and I talk about the sport of BMX freestyle, how we each got involved in it (I used to race BMX very competitively in my teens) and how that has led each of us to a lifetime of physical activity. If you’ve ever looked at adventure sports athlete and thought, “that looks fun, but what a waste of time,” then this episode of All About Fitness will change your mind and have you heading out to go get a bike or skateboard for your kids so they can stop playing video games and start being active out in the real world (and yes, that is a deliberate Gen X reference).  To give your kids a lifetime of physical activity, follow THIS LINK to Haro Bikes  RIDE, the story of John’s life - from being inside a youth detention center to a BMX star is a movie starring Ludacris that will be released in early 2020 - FOLLOW THE LINK TO WATCH THE TRAILER HERE. Necessity is the mother of invention - not sure who said that, but I do remember an old School House Rock video about it, so it must have been someone important. When it comes to fitness products, it seems like there are new inventions almost every week for workout equipment that promise to deliver results with no efforts. What does it take to get a piece of equipment from concept to market? In this day and age of social media, is it possible to bring a new product to market with a relatively minimal marketing budget and if so, how? On this episode of All About Fitness, Greg Nigro, one of the founders of company Terra Core Fitness (a sponsor of this podcast), talks about how he was able to get his product, the Terra Core, on the hit ABC TV show the Shark Tank. The episode aired on November 17, 2019 and can be found HERE (technically season 11, episode 8); Greg shares the process of how the Terra Core was brought to market, how it has grown in popularity with almost no marketing budget - thanks to social media, and finally, how he ended up on the Shark Tank along with what you can do to possibly get your product on the show (fyi - he has NO affiliation with the show, he's just sharing his experience). TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More. Many of us are familiar with this acronym and from sports teams to the workplace to the family environment most of us can agree that things go easier when a number of people work together to overcome a challenge. One of the most unique things about operating in a team environment is that each person is responsible for a specific function and when everyone works together tremendous things can happen. For years athletes would finish one season and then be left on their own when it comes to the strength and conditioning required to prepare for the next playing season. Some teams would have a strength coach provide off-season workouts but in general, athletes would either rest, do other activities or exercise on their own. In the late 1990s a strength coach named Mark Verstegen brought together a number of experts from the world of performance conditioning to create Athlete’s Performance, a team of experts to cater to all of the needs of athletes as they enter an off-season conditioning cycle. When it comes to the team of performance professionals who support a single athlete, it can include the position coach, the strength coach, speed coach, an athletic trainer, massage therapist and registered dietitian. When Verstegen started Athlete’s Performance, now known as Exos, it was one of the first operations to bring all of those specialties into one facility to help athletes achieve their optimum level of performance.  Sue Falsone was one of the early athletic trainers to work with Verstegen at Athlete’s Performance; she played an integral role in developing the systems that would help produce many of the world’s top athletes. Not only is Sue a well-known athletic trainer who lectures around the world, we recorded this conversation at the Asia Fitness Conference in Bangkok, Thailand, but she was THE FIRST woman to work as an athletic trainer in any of the four major sports leagues when she went to work with the LA Dodgers MLB team. On this episode of All About Fitness, Sue talks about her experience helping establish AP/Exos as the premier training facility in the world as well as what it was like to be the first women in her role with a professional sports team. For those of us fortunate to maintain a lavish western lifestyle it can be hard to imagine what the fitness scene might look like in countries like Thailand, India, Philippines or Oman; however, fitness is international and no matter where you go in the world there are modern health clubs with 21st century fitness equipment. As the economies of countries modernize, it’s creating new opportunities for the growth of the fitness industry. As workers move to higher-paying jobs they can afford many “luxuries” of modern living like fast food, smart phones and video games, as a result, the populations of these countries are experiencing a number of health issues related to a sedentary lifestyle that could affect the long term economic viability of each country. The upside its that these easily preventable health issues are creating new opportunities for the international growth of the fitness industry as many countries turn to exercise to help fight lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Fortunately, all around the world health clubs are opening in an effort to help people stay healthy through exercise and no where is this growth more explosive than the Asian market. As health clubs open and sign up new members this is creating an international demand for educated personal trainers. On this episode of All About Fitness, recorded live from the IDEA Conference in Shanghai, China, Marc Coronel, an international educator for fitness products like TRX and Trigger Point Therapy and Brian Bettendorf, an international business consultant specializing in fitness equipment, discuss the international growth of the fitness industry and whether personal trainers in Asia are better educated than those in the states (you'll have to listen to find out whether or not they are). Regular exercise can slow down the effects of aging on your body! Thanks to some fascinating research, we now have a much better understanding on how a lifetime of exercise can help you overcome the effects of aging. Founded in 1965, the Human Performance Laboratory at Ball State University in Indiana is one of the oldest exercise science labs in North America and for years has been on the cutting edge of research to identify the most effective methods for improving human performance. In the fall of 2018, the Ball State Lab, led by Dr. Scott Trappe, published a study titled, "Cardiovascular and skeletal muscle health with lifelong exercise" which measured the benefits of lifelong participation in exercise by studying a population of 70 year-olds who have participated in exercise for a large majority of their adult lives. In addition, the study compared the physiology of the 70 year-olds to 20-somethings to see how the physiology of the older adults - effected by years of regular exercise - compared to the younger adults and the results were AMAZING! On this episode of All About Fitness, Dr. Trappe, the director of the Ball State Human Performance Laboratory and the lead author of the study, joins me to discuss the research. On Wednesday, August 7 news broke that Stephen Ross, a real estate developer who happens to be a majority owner of Equinox health clubs and Soul Cycle indoor cycling studios, was hosting a fundraiser for Donald Trump at $250,000 per plate (see CNN story HERE). Equinox and Soul Cycle are two brands built on inclusivity and diversity with a large percentage of membership coming from the LGTBQ+ community; when the membership found out that their money was going to a major fundraiser for Trump, #boycottequinox and #boycottsoulcycle became trending hashtags on Twitter. Stephen Ross has the right to spend his money however he wants which includes making contributions to any politician he chooses; however, his customers also have the right to spend their money where they choose. On this episode of All About Fitness I'm joined by Zack Ford, a writer who covers the Trump administration for ThinkProgress as well as publishing his own newsletter on LGTBQ+ issues - Fording the River Styx - which covered the story HERE. Zack shares his insights on why so many members of the community feel betrayed. In addition, Dr. Natalia Petrzela, an Associate Professor of American History at the New School in NYC and co-host of the Past-Present podcast, makes a return to provide her unique insights into the consumer reaction, the boycott and whether it really will make an impact on the company. This is a fascinating discussion about the reaction to the owner of a fitness brand supporting a politician who has actively marginalized many consumers of his brand. The human body is like a cell phone; a phone is made up of hardware, specifically bits of plastic, metal and glass - what makes the phone function is the operating system. In the human body our muscles and skeletal structures are the hardware, our central nervous system (CNS) is akin to our operating system which allows us to function. The data received by the CNS is critical for helping you to move and perform your best. The shoes you wear can affect how your body receives data from the environment, specifically the ground. Our feet are designed to absorb force when we step on the ground and to generate force by pushing off against it. Wearing the wrong type of shoes can change how your feet, and your entire body, function. Galahad Clark is a 7th generation member of the Clark family that makes Clark shoes; however, he realized that many shoes are poorly designed and do not support the natural function of the feet they're supposed to protect. As a result, Galahad started the VIVOBAREFOOT shoe company to create minimalist shoes that allow for optimal foot biomechanics. Recently Mr. Clark & VIVOBAREFOOT produced the movie, Shoespiracy to tell and show how the large shoe companies design shoes for profits not to promote optimal human performance (as many claim). On this episode of All About Fitness, Galahad discusses what motivated him to disrupt the shoe industry; we discuss the benefits of wearing minimalist shoes and address the proper way to incorporate them into your exercise program. If you've ever wondered whether or not your shoes affect how you move then this episode is for YOU! Legs. Chest. Back. Arms. Core. Fascia. Emotions.  What? Yes, most exercise programs will focus on specific muscles or parts of the body, but when was the last time you walked into a gym to strengthen your fascia or train your emotions? The truth is that our bodies are complex organisms containing numerous systems (digestive, nervous, muscular) each one affected by exercise. Your fascia is the elastic tissue that surrounds every single muscle fiber; muscles generate force and fascia transmits that force through the body. If you are not doing the proper exercise or self-care techniques for your fascia, it WILL affect how you move and could be a potential cause of injury. When it comes to our emotions, there is a direct connection between how we feel and how we move; motion influence emotion and emotion influences motion. On this episode of All About Fitness, Rodney Corn, a co-founder of Feel Soma one of the smartest, most innovative fitness educators in the world who helped create the education programs for PTA Global and NASM shares his insights on fascia and emotions and how each can have a significant impact on how you move and feel both in and out of the gym. There are specific stages of motor learning for human development including rolling over, crawling, walking and climbing; movement is inherent in our nature, it is what our bodies are designed to do. Technology disrupts industries. Netflix eliminated Blockbuster - now instead of driving somewhere to argue about what to watch before falling asleep in front of the TV, we can do it from the comfort of our homes. From scheduling and paying for fitness classes via an app to fitness trackers and wearable technology that provide data on your exercise efforts to cardio equipment with integrated TVs to the social media platforms that allow you to take sweaty selfies after you’re done exercising, technology is indeed having an impact on how we exercise.  This is a first episode in a special series looking into how technology is hacking fitness. The series starts off with Bryan K. Group fitness classes are consistently one of the most popular programs or services offered by a health club or fitness studio. Exercising with other people creates a social environment that makes the process more enjoyable. Many people also enjoy group fitness because it is a chance to shut down the brain and let the body do the work while an instructor coaches the class through a workout. Body Pump. CX Works. Grit. Body Combat. All are group fitness classes designed by Les Mills. Working out in a group setting has come a long way since Jane Fonda pulled on some leg warmers and encouraged us to 'go for the burn!' While Ms. Fonda and the early pioneers of group fitness were responsible for creating their own dance-based workout programs, group fitness has evolved and now includes a variety of different formats for all levels of exercise experience. As the fitness industry has matured it is now possible to make a living as a full-time group fitness instructor In general, there are 2 different types of group fitness instructors: Freestyle instructors design their own workouts for the classes they teach Pre-choreographed instructors teach a workout designed by a third party. Les Mills is a chain of health clubs in New Zealand that has changed how the world does group fitness. Les Mills was the first club operator to realize there might be a market for formatted group fitness classes that provide a consistent, effective, safe and, most importantly, FUN workout experience. On this episode of All About Fitness, Bryce Hastings, the Science Director for Les Mills, pulls back the curtain and shares how Les Mills designs the workouts and conducts the research that makes thousands of people around the world get sweaty every day. Why do you exercise? What causes you to push yourself when you're already tired? How do you get motivated to achieve a challenging fitness goal? There are two primary types of motivation: intrinsic - working on a task for our own needs or interests and extrinsic - taking on a task to please or to meet the expectations of others; both types can be useful for giving you the ability to accomplish a daunting fitness goal. On AAF110 Hannah Eden, a popular fitness influencer on Instagram and a founder of the Pump Fit Club fitness studio in South Florida, shared how the loss of a close friend motivated her to join the fight to F*** cancer. When we spoke, Hannah was in the process of training for the Ring Road Race around Iceland to raise money in the memory of her friend, Jessica Boswell.   On this episode of All About Fitness, Hannah returns to talk about the experience and how she stay motivated to focus on her goal of completing the road even when her body was screaming at her to stop. In addition, Hannah updates us on what she is doing to help others become motivated to reach their goals. In professional sports the job of an athlete is to use his or her skills and abilities to help a team win games. The role of a coach is to teach players specific strategies and tactics of a sport, or a specific position in a sport, so they can out-perform their competition. The function of a strength and conditioning coach is to keep athletes fit, healthy and on the field (or court) so they can properly execute the plays as designed and instructed by the team coaches. Yes this may be biased, but it is my opinion that the strength and conditioning coach has one of the most important jobs on a team because helping athletes get in shape and stay injury-free has the greatest impact on whether or not a team is able to perform to the best of it's ability. On this episode of All About Fitness, Todd Wright, the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Philadelphia 76ers NBA team, shares how he helps his athletes get in top physical shape and prepare off the court to help the team beat the competition. Coach Wright's insights can help you to identify the most effective way to get in shape and stay game-ready for your favorite sport or recreational activity; if it's good enough to help one of Coach Wright's players, it's good enough to help you be your best! Note: NBA Star Kevin Durant credits Todd with having a significant impact on his playing career. Check out this video of Todd coaching his athletes through a complete dynamic warm-up - if it works for a NBA player, it can work for you!
