"My big fear with all of this is the trickle down," Dr. Sasha Gollish joins us on the episode, to chat about her work in Gender Equity in sport, her time as a professional runner for team Canada, how she knew she was in perimenopause, and much more. Gollish ran at a younger age, but took some time off and worked as an engineer in Toronto before getting back to the sport at a high level. We talk about what it looked like to go back into competitive running, working with Oiselle and Asics, going to the World Marathon Championships in 2023 for Team Canada, and eventually navigating perimenopause. As a gender equity advocate, Gollish worked to bring awareness to the World Athletics decision to resume "sex testing" for athletes competing in the female category, so we discuss her thoughts and perspective on that, along with concerns about how it may impact athletes down the line. In the third installment of recordings from the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon stage: Women in the Marathon. This event was the second live discussion held by Canada Running Series to examine women's challenges in getting to the start line, this time focusing on the marathon. Moderated by Michelle Kay with Sasha Gollish and Melanie Murzeau, the panel was a beautiful cross-section of female runners: Gaby Alcala, Cory Freedman, Allison Hill, Nattalyee Randall and Lauren Roberts. These amazing humans have both experienced their own challenges in getting to the start line AND helped others overcome their obstacles, so the discussion was honest and open. Sasha Gollish is a 42-year old elite middle and long distance runner who holds the masters world record in the indoor mile (4:38.73) and also represented Team Canada in the marathon at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Sasha has been very open on social media about the challenging perimenopausal symptoms she's been navigating for the past several years and we just love her honesty & transparency on a subject matter that has historically been clouded in secrecy and shame. Seeing female athletes at the top of their game well into their 40s is a relatively new phenomenon and yet it's starting to happen across many disciplines. Always one to stand up for what she believes in, Sasha is now using her platform to change the narrative about this stage of life and show women that we can absolutely kick butt into midlife and beyond.Sponsor: Canadian Masters AthleticsWebsite: canadianmasters.caJoin the CMA Facebook Group: @cma.vca is the best place to continue the menopause conversation!Instagram: @canadianmastersathletics35Connect with Sasha:Instagram: @sgollishrunsWebsite: www.sashagollish.com Resources we discussed in this episode:Our previous Inspired Soles interview with SashaThe Light We Give by Simran Jeet SinghConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Email us with guest ideas: inspiredsolescast@gmail.comInspired Soles InstagramKim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's websiteWe love hearing from you! Special Guest: Sasha Gollish. Known for a diversified running career spanning from 800 meters to marathons, Sasha revealed the key components that fuel her running journey. Highlighting the integration of her athletic endeavors with a holistic lifestyle approach, Sasha emphasized on the significance of enjoying varied physical activities aside from running. Encouraging runners to engage in cross-training, strength training, and participate in activities like Nordic skiing, cycling, or using an elliptical, she advocated the idea of being a holistic athlete. Sasha also shared her experience on dealing with injuries. She reinforced the concept of appreciating changes and setbacks, and the role of embracing other activities as it contributes resilience towards injuries. This approach, she believes, prevents a 'running identity' crisis when injury prevents participation in the sport. The powerful blend of Sasha's disciplines, from her athletic determination to her academic contributions, reinforces the premise that a well-rounded lifestyle, combined with a love for running, fosters a more sustainable and fulfilling running journey.
A few years ago, elite Canadian runner Sasha Gollish started experiencing some symptoms that had her wondering what the hell was up with her body—crime scene (or as she called them firehose) periods, strange memory lapses, times in races when her legs were flailing and her muscles were not responding the way they typically would as she struggled to find her stride. She wondered if she was sick. As you likely guessed by now, she wasn't sick. She was in perimenopause. After suffering alone for a bit, Sasha decided to open up and share her experiences online, not only for her own mental health, but also so other women wouldn't feel alone or invisible in their own struggles. This week she talks all about how she is learning to make peace with and tame what she calls her hormonal perimonster.Along with being an elite runner, Sasha Gollish, PhD, 41, is also a high-performance coach, engineer, and researcher in the Mental Health and Physical Activity Research Centre at the University of Toronto where her work focuses on knowledge translation. She has a substantial resume of world and national records, including setting the world record in the women's 40+ indoor mile in 2022 and setting two Canadian Masters Indoor records earlier this year at the Hal Brown Invitational Indoor meet. Also, this year she competed in the marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, the half marathon at the inaugural World Road Running Champs in Riga, Latvia, and the World Mountain Running Champs in Innsbruck, Austria. Carrie chats with Dr. Sasha Gollish! The Canadian national champion and world record holder in the indoor masters mile talks about maintaining her fire as she gets older, how she is helping make roads safer for pedestrians as a civil engineer, the power of positivity, observing the changes that perimenopause and menopause bring to your body, and much more!
Last week, the Toronto Waterfront Marathon held a run and panel discussion to talk about the fact that last year only 28% of their marathon registrants were women. These conversations, along with some survey data they had collected ahead of the event were the beginning of a fire lit in panellist Sasha Gollish: elite runner and community superhero. I chatted with Sasha about the panel discussion, the research she is continuing to do to look at races around the world, and how we collect more data to move to action.
I am thrilled to share the recording of our first-ever live virtual community event, Running and Reading with Alison Mariella Désir. This conversation with elite Canadian runner, Sasha Gollish, was recorded one week before the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon, which she just completed in a personal best time of 2:31:40. This race also served as the Canadian Marathon Championships so Sasha's incredible performance landed her on the podium in 3rd place alongside Tokyo Olympians, Malindi Elmore and Dayna Pidhoresky. After turning 40 last December, Sasha kicked off her unbelievable record setting year by running a masters world record for the indoor mile (4:38.73). She then proceeded to run every single Canadian Championship race from the track, to the roads, to the trails, to running an all-out vertical kilometer. She'll conclude her season next month at the Canadian XC Championships in Ottawa. Sasha is so much more than a fast runner. As an engineer she has a special love for data so we open with a fascinating discussion about how to strike a healthy relationship with it. We talked about her active and loving upbringing and how that may be playing into what we're seeing from her today. We even touch on dealing with disappointment by changing the story we're telling ourselves. This is a wide-ranging and important conversation for runners of all ages and ability levels.Connect with Sasha:Instagram: @sgollishrunsFacebook (help fund her trip to the World Mountain Running Championships in Thailand!): @sasha.gollishConnect with Carolyn & Kim:Kim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's website (sign up for her free weekly newsletter on the homepage)We love hearing from you! You asked for it, you got it. The amazing Sasha Gollish was kind enough to turn the tables to act as host and ask me some of her questions and some contributed by our community. This week we chat with Sasha Gollish, one of Canada’s most decorated competitive runners. Sasha opens up about the impact her parents had on her childhood and ultimately her decision to quit her job to pursue a career as a professional runner. At an early age, Sasha grew up on a healthy diet of sports, which included field hockey, cross country running, nordic skiing, downhill skiing, swimming, water polo, and track and field. By the time she entered the University of Toronto, Sasha fell out of love with running and ultimately applied to the University of Western to pursue a degree in Engineering. Thankfully, Sasha would return to the sport and hasn’t looked back! We’ll also cover Sasha’s incredible running resume, which includes her dominating performance at the 2015 CIS Championships, her views on women in sports, and the truly inspiring work she’s doing in the community to uplift women. As an added bonus, we’ll also hear from Harper, Sasha’s adorable rescue pup! In this episode, we chat with Sasha Gollish on her experience at World's in Doha, her love of running and her tenets of living.
In this episode, we begin with a short Q&A with Valarie Neidig on her experience last year at Kara Goucher's Podium Retreat. As of the time of publishing this episode, there are still spots left for this year's retreat with Kara from October 18-20th. You can get more details and sign-up here: https://retreat.karagoucher.com/ I am told that you will not regret signing up if you can make it work for you! Then at 13:13 into the episode, we flip the script and bring on Sasha Gollish to interview me about my first 50-mile race on August 17th at the Squamish 50. We talk about my training and insecurities going into the race and then how the race itself went, plus bigger takeaways for the future. While I am generally not comfortable talking so much about my own pursuits, I do hope you find inspiration in my journey to completing this goal.
In this episode, we bring back elite runner and 2:32 marathoner Sasha Gollish (previously on episodes 118 and 131) to discuss her recent injuries (ankle and foot). She talks about staying focused and sane through injury while also maintaining fitness and preparing for a comeback. We discuss her cross training methods from the bike to the pool to the elliptical, including examples of workouts she did to provide intensity while staying off of her foot. Then, we talk how she is managing her return from injury to try to put herself in a good position for the NYC Marathon on November 3rd. Interestingly, her approach to her return is more gradual and deliberate than you might expect, and I believe there are many lessons to be learned from Sasha's methods for those facing an injury. Also, here is a link to Sasha's blog about her workouts while injured and coming back from injury: https://sashagollish.wordpress.com/2019/08/18/some-workouts-for-coming-back-from-injury/
In this episode, I bring back episode 118 Sasha Gollish (at her request) to talk about performance engineering. We talk about practical tips to improve performance in the areas of sleep, nutrition, habit tracking, goal setting and more. In particular, she coaches me up on sleep which is probably my biggest opportunity area. Sasha is an elite level athlete, 2:32 marathoner, and aspiring Olympian for Canada but believes like I do that we all have more in common than not. Follow her at @sgollishruns!
In this episode, I start with a few current event topics including results from the NYC Half Marathon and an update on the Olympic qualifying process from USATF (via www.letsrun.com). Then at 21 minutes in, I turn to an interview with Canadian elite athlete (and 2:32 marathoner) Sasha Gollish. She was in Austin for training to escape the cold winter of Toronto, so I got to join her for a few runs as well as get her in the podcast studio. After she listened to episode #110 (with Christie Aschwanden) and read the book Good to Go (on the science of recovery), Sasha invited me out for our first float pod experiences. We talk all about it to start the interview and then cover a range of topics from her approach to recovery to coaching to lessons from her engineering dissertation for running. Plus, we talk about her Oiselle partnership and everything they do to build community in our sport. You can follow Sasha's journey to make the Olympic Marathon team for Canada at www.sashagollish.com or via her instagram handle @sgollishruns.
This episode is all about girl power! We start by chatting with the new Canadian marathon record holder Rachel Cliff, who ran 2:26:56 in the Nagoya Women's Marathon 2 weeks ago. Cliff talks about breaking barriers, and the joy of running in a women's only race. Sasha Gollish and Jess O'Connell are athlete ambassadors for Fast and Female, a not-for-profit organization that strives to keep girls engaged in sport. Started in 2005 by Canadian nordic skier and Olympic Champion Chandra Crawford, Fast and Female connects national team athletes with girls aged 8 to 18. Girls drop out of sport at a rate 6 times that of their male peers, meaning that they miss out on the tremendous benefits that come from sport participation. Sasha, Jess and Chandra have not only enjoyed successful athletic careers but they also excel in their non-athletic pursuits. These women have learned the transformative power of sport firsthand, and are each on a mission to help spread the love and dominate the world!
On this week's episode, Canadian Running staff revisit the lingering question of gender equity in cross-country races in Canada. One year ago, this issue came to the foreground, particularly in the Canadian university scene, and currently there are still differences in distances between boys and girls, men and women, varying across provinces and federations. Several athletes and experts weigh in on the controversy, explore the reasons for the disparity, draw on personal experiences, and offer potential solutions to the on-going issue. We speak with Leslie Sexton, Victoria Coates, Sasha Gollish, Branna MacDougall, and Brogan MacDougall, along with science writer and contributing editor for Canadian Running Alex Hutchinson. Each voice thoughtfully examines the situation and it's clear that the conversation not only remains relevant but also needs to continue.
Cross country season is one of the best seasons. There is something to be said for races taking place on grueling landscapes, through scenic fall settings, watching as the spectators run from checkpoint to check point to jockey a better view at the runners as they pass by. Cross is a great place to test limits, give trial to new tactics, and perhaps make an error along the way as well. This week, we chat cross country, Sasha Gollish and Steve Boyd join me to debate whether the women’s race should be an equal distance to the mens race, but first Alex WIlkie talks about his season, running style, and Eastern Ontario dairy products.
