    Grande-Digue 5-15 Km race interviews - #181

I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and interview some fine runners before and after a race. What better time to start than to head out to Grande-Digue for the annual 5-15 km runs and do some interviews? It is a well-run event, and it is a shame to hear this could be the last year for the run. In this episode, I take my new mic and chat with several different people to get their take on several things about the race. A different way of doing content, but I really enjoyed myself, and so did these runners. Windy and cool with some rain early, but a typical day for this time of year. Let us know what you think, folks, later.Motivate to Move Email:motivatetomove.podcast@gmail.comOur Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041607699495As always, give the gift of life and donate blood today.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/motivate-to-move--4528736/support.

In part two of our episode with Richard Faulkner, we discuss how Richard had full support from everyone in the school system and how his job helped pay to keep him in shape. Now that Richard is retired, he is still very active and lives a very active lifestyle—hiking, mountain biking, and paddling all over the world. Just because you're retired doesn't mean you can't stay active. We discuss large Alligators and snakes in Florida, how you need a healthy respect for Nature. Richard helped start the Gentlemen's League in Hillsborough and played in the league. Set up some ice time at the local arena for all kinds of activities for the classes. Badminton was a big part of our school PE classes, and Richard was front and centre, teaching us kids how to be active and have fun doing it. Don't forget to check out Baymount Outdoor Adventures. This week, we had a fantastic discussion with Richard Faulkner, whom I have wanted on the show for a long time. Retired teacher and business owner who lived in Hillsborough. This ended up being part one of a two-part episode. We discuss Baymount Outdoor Adventures and how that came about. Kayaking in the Bay of Fundy at Hopewell Rocks and the experience of the tour before and after High tide. Cave tours at White Rock, hiking, and much more. A fascinating story about the land where White Rock is now and how it came into the hands of Caledonia High School. That land was used to make a beautiful Orienteering map that has been used for years by Orienteers from all over the world. Most important is the teaching Richard did in Caledonia. Richard felt there should be an educational component to all the activities offered at the school, and he succeeded. We finish this episode off with a story about an activity that was created by a student at Caledonia. How it became so popular with everyone. There is so much in this episode, we hope you come back and listen to part 2 next week.Baymount Outdoor Adventures:https://www.baymountadventures.com/Motivate to Move email:motivatetomove.podcast@gmail.comMotivate to Move Facebook page, check us out.https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041607699495Remember to give the gift of life and donate blood today.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/motivate-to-move--4528736/support.

We have a great time when Alex Quinn sits down and chats with us. The subject matter can be tough to discuss but we feel this is a good place to discuss tough subjects and let everyone know you are not alone. This episode is brought up to help promote mental health awareness. We go back a little and Alex gives us some of his backstory. The 100-mile run Alex created and completed was around King Square in Saint John, helping to bring awareness to suicide prevention, and mental health awareness. A personal story for Alex and many people that we know and love.  Alex had a camera crew following him around for this epic journey and the movie they made is top-notch, titled, Running in Circles. A brilliant story and edited perfectly, I can't wait for our listeners to see this when it comes out of the film festivals and is available for public consumption, probably sometime this Summer. We cover many topics, far more than what I can mention here. We believe you will like this story and we are placing some very special links that Alex wants us to display at the bottom of this description. Diane lined up a fantastic guest for our episode this week, Joyce King from Lower Hainesville N.B. Many of you don't know that Joyce was a champion arm wrestler. Even crazier is the fact Joyce started at the late age of 30. Skip ahead 10 years and Joyce defeated a Russian rival super heavyweight to become the best female arm wrestler in the world. I was unaware of this, but Joyce competed with her right and left arm over her career. Joyce earned 18 national championships and 18 World Arm Wrestling Federation medals, she won 12 gold, four silver, and two bronze medals. Inducted into the Canadian Arm Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011. Inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, on October 15, 2021. Joyce the Catcher King was her nickname and for good reason. I don't want to spoil it here but you should listen to the episode and find out why the Catcher King is so appropriate. Tuesday is the day and for these two ladies, it is non-negotiable even with the busy lives they lead. We talk about the stress relief of getting out and running with the group. How the group started and if they run trails in the Winter or even in the dark. Of course, a trail-running podcast episode isn't complete without talking about Bacon.      Our very special guest tonight is Ian Loughead, senior conservator at an N.S. museum. Early on Ian was into team sports, Soccer, and especially Baseball. Later on in his 20s, Ian started cycling and doing road races, 70-90 km runs and he did this for 5-6 years. Of course, this led to Duathlons and finishing over 20 Triathlons. This has all led to Ian being involved in the Maritime Dog Harness Association and Harness Dog Sports. Canicross is a sport where a dog and a human run together. Your dog needs to be on their lead throughout the event and harness belts and bungee lines must be in use. A great way for people and dogs to get outdoors exercise and have some fun. We discuss Ian's charity race for Movember every year and how Ian only got serious about running in his 40s. See it's never too late. Lastly, we talk about how Ian is now into coaching runners and how much he enjoys helping others reach their goals.Motive to Move email, let us know who should be on the show:motivatetomove.podcast@gmail.comMotivate to move Facebook page, check us out:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041607699495As always please give the gift of life and donate blood today.

The stories Nick shares are crazy and gut-wrenching. Nick left the Navy after eight years and was at the bottom, picked himself up, and got to work. In late 2021 Nick decided it was time to start trail running, getting out more into nature and seeing what he could accomplish. In 2022 Nick completed Capes 100 with five minutes to spare, amazing. People should listen to this episode, it shows how negatives can be turned into positives and reminds us to drop our fears and get out there and go for it. Don't forget about Nick's Chilly Challenge, at least 300 km running each month this Winter outdoors and for every 1000$ donated, he will plunge into the ocean for 1 minute. Cory is a goal setter and one of the main goals he is trying to promote is the idea of students spending at least one week of the school year camping, organized by students themselves, and that schools would collect camping gear from the community to reduce obstacles to youth enjoying nature. More kids spending more time outdoors and less time on their devices sounds like a wonderful idea here at Motivate to Move. This is just the beginning of what Cory is doing and working on. In this episode, you will hear many more ideas such as "Buddy Benches" and trail building. Cory has been offering art therapy workshops in schools since 1999, teaching life planning, hoop dance, beadwork, sewing, journal writing, talking circles, and much more. How about Cory's project of linking a trail from Saint John to Walton Glen Gorge, then on to Sussex? This all started 20 years ago to walk his dog, why not be productive while walking? For 7 months of the year, Rodney hauls either tailings or a sandstone base material into the Dobson trail. Making the trail better for more people to walk and hike. Recently Rodney has completed his initial goal but the job is never done, now Rodney has a few more ideas to make the Dobson Trail a better place for all. Tonight we have two amazing guests for you. Mark Hemmings and his daughter Aren, these two were recently part of the 24-hour run at Loonie Loops in late August. We met on the trial several times that day and chatted with each other. I was very surprised to find out this was a father and daughter-running duo. I was instantly impressed and thought that we had to get Mark and Aren on our show and here they are. Both signed up for the 24-hour run and as some of you know the conditions were not the best. That didn't deter either of them, they just kept at it. Listen to Aren talk about how this was her first podium finish and took first place. Great job Aren and an amazing story. Mark had an amazing day himself finishing with 26 laps for the run and his fastest lap was his final lap, amazing. Father and daughter were very determined and wouldn't stop in some of the worst conditions. What I like about this interview is the fact that both Aren and Mark loved their time on the trail at Loonie Loops and they can't wait to try again next year. Can't wait to see what next year brings. Follow Mark on Strava, he runs in so many interesting places:https://www.strava.com/athletes/32318210?fbclid=IwAR1nwPWC8MAx_E8aFSRfLx2lm5t0lHmCUT4MiPQgsT4xdawngC8e-_7kTgcYou can and should follow Mark on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/markhemmings/?fbclid=IwAR1qOD2I0GwOqTDIcccx6_HFXfvLSJf-Dhhln8z3tPAS3gDAzPk_Anl5OrYFollow Aren on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/arensophia/?fbclid=IwAR28j5OCseYRclfUP5G3vF4csiZnRfmrpI5tqSI-RFC2KpNwJttYULLMzbcMotivate to Move email, let us know who should be on our show:motivatetomove.podcast@gmail.comOur Facebook page, check us out:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041607699495As always, give the gift of life and donate blood today.

How does a busy family keep active and have the time to go to the events they want to do? Just listen to this episode and find out. 2014 is when things took off for Erin. Now she has completed Marathons, Triathlons, and even an Ironman and we believe nothing can stop her. The next step is trail running and a probable return to Loonie Loops and a 50km trail run. Running inside or outside doesn't matter much to Erin, as long as she gets the training she needs. Great job Erin, keep up the excellent work. Bike bus and active transportation - With Shannon Emery and Michael Roy #139

Tonight we cut ties and explore something a little different for us at Motivate to Move, both Diane and I believe this to be a critical topic. Our two guests this evening have been working hard for a better connection of our active transportation routes in and around our Moncton area. Shannon Emery and Michael Roy are passionate about connecting these routes in a safer, more user-friendly way. Once these connections are made more people will use them, build it and they will come. This leads to the other topic of discussion this evening, bike bus. Shannon has been biking with her twins to school nearly every day, why you might ask? Biking in the mornings for kids used to be a mainstay but now it is considered by many to be unsafe, too many cars going too fast and roads not set up for kids to bike to school. Connecting the routes, making things safer by reducing speeds and education plus some much-needed exercise will go a long way. Some mornings Shannon and her friends have 30 kids biking with them with hopes that more parents will start a bike bus in other parts of the city. Now the city has a full-time active transportation coordinator and things are heating up, can't wait to see what happens next. This year Alex has struck gold again but instead of 100 km, it was 100 miles, an incredible achievement, way to go Alex. Why did Alex do such an incredible feat one might ask? Well, because Alex wanted to raise money to help save a life, suicide prevention. Never alone for any of his roughly 400 laps, Alex recalls how his event went, his training, his family support, and all the events he has completed leading up to this one. His coach and all the local support plus many trail runners and runners alike were there to cheer Alex on. A very inspirational and motivating story that you will not want to miss. Tonight we speak with Stefanie Condon-Oldreive. When her very healthy father passed away from pancreatic cancer, Stefanie was searching for answers. Little did she know there was very little information out there for pancreatic cancer and support for the disease was no better. Sometimes people were told to go home and get their affairs in order. this was unacceptable to Stefanie and she has created Craig's Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society and turned it into a national charity dedicated to both increasing survival and improving the quality of life for every Canadian diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. With partnerships and fundraising efforts over $2,000,000 has been raised. 100% of every dollar is donated back to all their programs for this disease. This leads us to the Kicking PancreAS 5km run/walk event, in a province near you. Diane and I are planning on joining for the virtual 5km this year, maybe you should. We discuss the training, the mental and physical stresses placed on the body, and the run itself. The highs and lows of such a grueling event can be overwhelming but Nick was up to the task. Doing much better than he even thought possible, Nick crushed the Capes 100 course. This is a very inspiring story and reminds us that the mind and body can do amazing things with the right mindset and proper training. I met on the course Jess Vickruck, we ran a few laps of the 10-lap race together and started chatting. This was the longest race she had ever attempted. We get to hear how Jess handled the event, the course at night, and what it is like running on trails in the dark. Jess tells us how she started running and what led her to choose the Dark 50 trail run. Jess had a couple of surprises at the end of her run, I will not share them here in the notes, but we believe you will love hearing about it. I want to add this was an event put on by Jos Eijkelestam, Dutch Viking Events. Benjamin Smith loves disc golf and is very passionate about the sport. He has been playing since 2003 and has designed and built over 44 disc golf courses, which is very impressive. Ben has developed a disc golf lesson plan that he taught over 20,000 people. Ben is working on disc golf to be recognized as a National Sporting Organization, more recognition for the sport he loves. Disc golf is popping up everywhere and still only 20% of Maritimers have even heard of it and that is what Ben is trying to change and getting as many people out there playing the sport as possible. We talk about Hurricane Fiona and how it devastated PEI and many courses around the Maritimes including his very own. The courses are slowly coming back and new ones are being proposed all the time. The sport is growing fast and there is no telling how far it can go. More sustainable than a golf course and using the land and its features to its advantage, the wave of the future is here and I can't wait to try it out.
